NFL Week 9 open thread

The real Super Bowl might happen today. The unbeaten Colts host the unbeaten Patriots, both coming off big wins last week (well, if you want to call the Pats’ satisfying 52-7 drubbing of the Redskins a big win). The rest of the schedule is anti-climactic by comparison to that game, but Philadelphia hosts the Boys, the Packers go to Kansas City, and there are a whole lot of other games that I can’t be forced to care about.

Prolly the same group that officiated that Colt/Steeler championship game. The Pitt.player had a completion, then he fumbled, then he recovered his own fumble, it was so obvious(and it was challenged and incessantly replayed, it was so obvious)… and I was rootin Colts. My brother swears he saw a Colt horseshoe tatoo on one of the officials. By the way, anybody remember that Indykickers name who missed the final kick in that steeler/colt champ game?
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 9:55 PM
Your an honest person.
The Kicker was Mike, “liquored up kicker” Vanderjack (sp). He went on to the Cowboys and was fired by the Tuna and is out of football.
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 9:57 PM
I’m NOT putting the Pats in as a lock for the AFC champ this year, but IF we face Indy again It wil probably be at home in bad weather. If so? Pats win.
Blitz
Yeah, but don’t expect to be saved by “the tuck rule” this time. The refs hate the Pats more than my Raiders. Brady effing fumbled. Never, ever, forget: that Super Bowl was tainted. No one in the Nation (Raider Nation, there are no other legitimate Sports Nations) will forget.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 9:58 PM
That one call on Hobbs I think was downright CRIMINAL
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:02 PM
the fact it bring you so much pain brings a massive smile to my face. You made my day!

Oh did Bill Plian get caught with his shorts down?

Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 9:58 PM
and yet? I’ve seen the SAME CALL a myriad of other times in more years than I’d care to admit. (I was THERE in 1972 52-0) GOD that was a cold day….So when you say”YOUR RAIDERS” I know you have a bias. I may be a Pats fan,but I also know what’s legal, illegal.cheating and “class?”….

TheBigOldDog
A tainted Super Bowl brings a smile to your face? Referees overstepping their bounds to guarantee a Pats win makes you happy? You know what will make me happy? A horrible season for Tom Brady next year, as I have him as starting QB in two fantasy leagues. Next year, though, I think I will add 5 bucks to KSK’s bounty on his knees.
It’s one thing to lose, it’s another to have a call purposely missed to allow the other team to win.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 10:09 PM
Awesome catch Big dog!!!
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:10 PM
Okay. Maybe we saw something different. The one I was watching didn’t specifically say Moss, or even the Pats, just that offensive pass interference would be called.

OK….SO…This shows class, sportsmanship and friendly rivalry?
OH!!!…a frackin’ RAIDERS fan….excusable, you don’t really learn those niceties in jail,do you?
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:12 PM
Hey what do you think of Randy Moss? Lost a step huh?
How’s that 4th round draft pick working out for you? Didn;t make the team huh? Gee, that’s a shame…
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:13 PM
Very possible Sue
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:14 PM
Now now Dog(may I call you dog?) we can’t tease the poor Raiders fan. It’s not his fault Belitnekoff,Stabler and Allen aren’t walkin’ through that door…..Also,since they JOBBED the Pats back in ‘78(BOGUS roughing the passer call) I kinda figure we OWE them one….
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:18 PM
I heard it and thought it was my TV and then I thought, for a second, it was a recording skipping. Then I thought, na, had to be my TV. Bwahahaha! Say goodbye to $500K and your first round draft pick Colts.
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:18 PM
and yet? I’ve seen the SAME CALL a myriad of other times in more years than I’d care to admit.
Blitz
When? Seriously. The “tuck rule”, indeed. Last season, the Chargers were called for an “illegal forward pass” that should have been ruled a fumble, and would have been anywhere else except that the Chargers were playing the Raiders.
That is the fate of your team. You the Pats will have to win every game from now until the end of time by destroying whomever they face. Not keeping it close, but beating the ever loving crap out of them so no one can have a doubt.
You think over 100 yards in penalties on crap interference calls is bad? Just you wait.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 10:19 PM
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 9:57 PM
Right that was him! Hey didn’t they always refer2 Vanderjack as “THE MOST ACCURATE KICKER ON THE PLANET” for the longest time? Constantly, everyFrickintime the guy took the field ad nausem. I think he once stated “I don’t have to practice, because I’m a natural athlete”. It was maybe during Cowboys training camp. Then he started missing kick after kick(after kick).
OMG… remember that KillerBettisFumble(very rare4him though)?
What a wildAss game that was(1 of my teams lost, but what a blast ending).
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 10:21 PM
Poor Raiders are so persecuted. Hey, wait until you see what they do to you when you play the Colts!
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:22 PM
OK…now you’re looking like a Jets fan…The “TUCK” rule is a media hyped explanation of a NON FORWARD PASS. It’s usually called on fumbles to explain why ITS NOT A FUMBLE…..how many games do you watch? Hell, how old are you? I’ve been around since Jim Nance….
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:23 PM
I thought the crowd noise sounded very strange — one minute they’re roaring and then suddenly barely a murmur. Odd.
D2Boston on November 4, 2007 at 10:24 PM
Actually he was, so long as the game wasn’t on the line.
He mouthed off about the Pats which lead Peyton to call him something like, “an idiotic, liquored up kicker.”
Then he missed a game tying FG against the Pats after making the $ sign to the Patriots sideline. It was the beginning of the end for him.
That game Colt/Steelers was one of the most dramatic games I can recall. The Refs did everything to hand that Game to the Colts. Then they fight it off, and you think they have it won and the Bus fumbles and Rothlesburger makes the TD saving shoestring tackle. The Vanderjerk missed the layup. It was beautiful!
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:26 PM
Big dog? Do you remember that ‘78 game? Or when Howie long (no idea how big he was on steroids) went after Patrick Sullivan? (I know him,as*hole)…and bit him?…THIS is what Krydor and Raider fans are nostalgic about….
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:27 PM
OK…back to the game….Dallas wins, but what do you think? QB,Coach or receiver corps is the Eagles problem?
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:29 PM
Packers and Cowboys alone atop a wide open NFC
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 10:37 PM
I think you have to add the Giants Ccube
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:38 PM
Yes I do. Like yesterday. I remember the blazers the Sullivan’s bought the team (it sticks in my head)…. Howie’s from Charlestown isn’t he?
The Sullivan’s era was a mess. The Patriots were such a train wreck for so many years it’s not funny. The Stadium was a dump (I can still see those nasty aluminum benches) and the team was always bad. Imagine a guy like John Hanna being stuck on that team for all those years?
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Did you SEE that???….No helmet,25 yards…that’s GUTS
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Just so you’re clear on this, Blitz: there is no “friendly rivalry” between the Raiders and anyone else.
A fumble is when a QB is holding the ball and it gets knocked out of his hand, like what happened that fateful day when the refs gave the Pats the win. There’s no one anyone but a diehard homer would even consider what happened an incomplete forward pass.
Just get used to crap calls deciding your games from here on out. That’s what I’m telling you, and you’d best believe it. Randy Moss called for interference? No WAY! Because it wasn’t. It doesn’t matter, because that is your fate.
Right now, and for the next 5 years, your team will be good enough to overcome it. Eventually, that powerhouse team will fade. The bad calls won’t stop, though. You’ll lose dozens of games because of phantom holds, imaginary false starts, invisible roughing calls and the like.
I’ve been a fan since the days of Tom Flores. So, since I was 10. I’m 37. So, 27 years. If you were to take a blood sample, it would be Silver and Black. Some might think that has something to do with exposure to Mercury and a pack a day habit, but I’m fairly certain it occurs because of my loyalty to my team.
You dudes never had glory until Bellichick showed up. There is no legacy of greatness. Let’s see how well you handle the transition from “spunky underdog” to “evil empire” to “the next St. Louis Rams”.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 10:40 PM
Why are the Boys running the score up on the poor iggels? Why is Romo still in the game? Why is he throwing to TO? Don’t they respect the game?
TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2007 at 10:43 PM
Ya, legacy. How’s that legacy working out for ya?
Manage the transition? Dude, don’t you follow the NFL? we have freakin’ Darth Vader for a head coach! Embrace the dark side!

Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:46 PM
The NFC will put the wild back in wildcard this season, its a wide open, almost anyteams conference, kind of year in the NFC. Damn I wish the Titans were in the NFC.
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 10:48 PM
Is pumping phake crowd noise against the rules? It’s gotta be right?
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 10:50 PM
Blitz: there is no “friendly rivalry” between the Raiders and anyone else.
See that’s YOUR problem….I know Raider fans are passionate and love their team (if possible) even more than their tatoos, but I was talking about fan to fan…..
37??……I sneer at 37. I was 37 when the Pats last went 1-15 (could be 2-14,memory ain’t what it used to be)….I was 8 when the Pats drafted Hannah I think, haven’t looked it up….I was IN THE STANDS when the Pats BLEW the “Draft Bowl” against the Colts….You know nothing of persecution dear Krydor, but you keep trying son,the Warden may show mercy and put you in the Library
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:53 PM
Manage the transition? Dude, don’t you follow the NFL? we have freakin’ Darth Vader for a head coach! Embrace the dark side!
TheBigOldDog
Yeah, and Shanahan has a SUPER SYSTEM. That system relied on John Elway and playing half the games a mile above sea level. Darth Vader’s system relies on Tom Brady and a defense that makes the Raider D look like children.
Take the highs while you can, because they will sustain you in the crappy times. Just think, your highs before this era were two Super Bowl losses. Now, it will probably be at least 4 wins.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 10:54 PM
Man those Philly stands are packed, maybe they can get Indy to email the Mp3 of crowd noise over, get the fans back in the game (so2speak).
christophercube on November 4, 2007 at 10:54 PM
OH GOOD ALLAH……Now the moron is blaming his teams deficiencies on ALTITUDE????

CHRIS AND DOG?
Can you folks give me a link?
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 10:57 PM
Blitz,
I concede that you are a grumpy old man who suffered through a crappy team that has been pathetic for most of your fandom. Do you want some kind of tasty treat?
Then again, the Patriots never had Norv Turner as a head coach. You have never suffered until Norv coaches your team.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 10:58 PM
Pats have been to 5 Super Bowls. I don’t know and am too lazy to look it up, but I suspect the Raiders have been to 6? Pats have won 3 (reread above) and I think the Raiders have won what? 2?…..So we’re pretty even Kraylor
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 11:01 PM
LOL!!!!….Krydor? We agree on THAT at least….although the Pats went through a horrible period of Sullivan cronies JUST before they sold out….it’s laughable, not tear inducing like Turner
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 11:03 PM
Krydor? The thing I was trying to point out (miserably) was that IT’S A GAME? and that your whining about something that happened years ago doesn’t really matter today. I was, by showing MY bad history, trying to make you take into account that, well….SH*T HAPPENS…..
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 11:05 PM
Three Super Bowls. Madden won one, Flores won two. Would have been more, had it not been for those damn Steelers in the 70’s and Chucky having our playbook.
Krydor on November 4, 2007 at 11:07 PM
NOW….can someone answer me? QB,coach or receiving corps for the Eagles??….This is a horrible team. Mcnab is a horrible QB with NO receivers….Andy Reid(poor guy) is being vilified….IF you were GM,what would you do?
Blitz on November 4, 2007 at 11:08 PM
Ok, 3 still,read my 11:05 post

Yeah, it’s a game. It’s a great channel for frustration and loose energy. I love it, but I cannot marry it because there are laws against human/sport marriages.

New England fans had an 86 year-long drought to regain Baseball glory, we will go on no matter what happens when Brady transfers or retires. New Englanders are used to roughing it out.
BKennedy on November 4, 2007 at 11:35 PM
Great game. Wish the Colts would have won, but I do believe they’ll get ‘em next time. I can’t stand that friggin Brady. Not saying all the calls were perfect, but he sure was a whining, crying, fit throwing, baby.

TheBigOldDog on November 5, 2007 at 12:10 AM
Oh please. When Brady starts throwing teammates under the bus to explain yet another disappointing playoff loss or lobbies the NFL for rule changes or yells in the Press box to “Break his F’in leg” when the backup QB is in the game for the opponent and your team is winning 40-21, then you’ll have a legitimate complaint.
When the Refs call one of the worst officiated games in recent NFL history, you can yell at the Refs.
TheBigOldDog on November 5, 2007 at 12:14 AM
Lousy officiating, too many penalties, outplayed on both sides of the ball for the first 3 quarters…great 4th quarter comeback by the Pats! The best team won!
miketheman on November 5, 2007 at 12:19 AM
Congratulations Patriots Fans!!!
Yeah, I was disappointed.
But my team lost to a great team.
Here are some key points:
1.) the Patriots defensive end Richard Seymour was a huge asset to the defense due to his pass rush. The Colts had Tony Ugoh sidelined for an injury, and Richard Seymour played an incredible pass rush game against an inexperienced substitute, causing big problems for Peyton Manning.
2.) the draw play was good for the Patriots, considering the Colts defense really shut down the Patriots run offense. But the draw play was used at critical moments, and it worked very well.
3.) Randy Moss is the central piece. He is very tall, and Brady is able to throw passes to him that only Moss can catch.
4.) Colts WR Marvin Harrison was a big loss, simply because rookie WR Gonzalez and Moorehead could not get the job done at all. Marvin may be shorter than Moss, but Marvin runs predictable, straight routes, and he is the prime “go-to-guy” for the Colts.
5.) The Patriots pass defense absolutely shut down Colts receiver Dallas Clark, who only caught 2 passes.
6.) Peyton Manning was pressured most of the game, with the Patriots only rushing 4 defensive guys. But Richard Seymour’s play-making abilities makes it seem like there were 11 guys rushing at once. Peyton Manning was out of sync.
The Colts lost to a great team.
Congratulations, Patriots.
GO COLTS!!

I looked it up in the record book, and there was no reference to it being tainted. While I was there, I noticed how the Raiders went to th SB the following year and got absolutely humiliated, losing 48-21 to the Bucs.
Then, the year after that, and the year after that, the Pats took home Lombardi trophies, again.
How is it that refs calling the game exactly as the rules are written is “overstepping their bounds”?
Pablo on November 5, 2007 at 5:09 AM
So the Pats win. Good for them. But Tom Brady is still a pig.

The Indianapolis Colts do not need to pipe any noise into the dome. The RCA dome is loud enough and small enough. I have been there a ton of times.
Regarding the myth of “piping noise,” here is what CBS News had to say about that unfounded rumor:
