Musharraf declares emergency rule in Pakistan; Update: Chief justice arrested; Update: Pakistan considers shari’a in tribal area? Update: Troops deployed to Bhutto’s house
posted at 10:23 am on November 3, 2007 by Allahpundit
The Pakistani leader, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, declared a state of emergency about 6 p.m. local time today, Pakistani television reported.
All members of the Supreme Court will be required to sign a new provisional constitutional order mandating the state of emergency. It is widely believed that any judge failing to do so will be dismissed.
The declaration came days before the Supreme Court was expected to rule on the constitutionality of General Musharraf’s re-election as president last month and of his ability to serve as both the country’s president and military leader…
A Pakistani intelligence official said that a list had been prepared of prominent Pakistani journalists and opposition politicians who would be detained.
The Beeb claims that police have surrounded the Supreme Court building and that independent media is off the air. Read through the Times piece and you’ll see that the pretext being used is the jihadi offensive in the tribal areas. Needless to say, the real reason is Musharraf’s fear that the Court is going to bounce him as president. Condi Rice and Adm. Fallon warned him yesterday not to do it. You see what we get for our money.
We didn’t blog much about it but the biggest blow to Musharraf’s authority this year didn’t come from the Taliban, it came from his political standoff with the country’s chief justice, whom he dismissed on an apparently trumped-up corruption charge in an earlier bid to intimidate the Court — and saw it blow up in his face when mass protests were held and the Court reinstated the chief justice. I thought between that, the return of Benazir Bhutto from exile, and the disaffection within the Pakistani army at the campaign against the Taliban that Musharraf would have to keep his nose clean from now on. Instead he’s doubled down. And since he’s relying entirely now on the military for his authority, he’ll have to address that disaffection by scaling back the campaign in the tribal areas. Which means we might as well finally turn off the tap of that military funding that’s brought us jack squat for the past 4-5 years.
Your obvious exit question: What now?
Update: Yup, it’s a coup.
The chief justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, was removed from his job and placed under house arrest. Musharraf had suspended the judge earlier this year, but he was later reinstated.
“This is a very fateful day for the country. Pakistan is in deep, deep crisis,” said Aitzaz Ahsan, Chaudhry’s attorney. “It is one man against the nation.” Ahsan said that he expected to be arrested later Saturday night…
The declaration is expected to bring on a wave of extremist attacks that have roiled the country in recent months, with increasingly large swaths of territory falling under the sway of insurgents.
Update: Eight justices of the Pakistani Supreme Court have declared the emergency order illegal and ordered the government not to comply with it.
Update: Via Weasel Zippers, that sure didn’t take long. War is over, if you want it…
Pakistan is considering enforcement of Islamic laws in Pakistan’s north-western Swat valley to meet the demands of pro-Taliban militants who briefly seized and then released around 100 security personnel after nine days’ fierce fighting that left more than 200 people dead. “The government is considering the implementation of Sharia law in the view of the demands of the local people,” said Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai, governor of the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) in which the valley is situated…
Earlier, the rebels surrounded and disarmed 48 paramilitary soldiers on Thursday, who were released again Friday.
“We did not want to fight these Muslim brothers (militants) who are striving for the enforcement of Islamic sharia (law),” a captive told reporters before the release.
Update: High drama in Karachi. Bhutto’s just arrived, having flown back from Dubai. Minor problem, though:
Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was sitting on a plane at Karachi airport Saturday following a decision by the government to impose a state of emergency, her spokesman said, as paramilitary troops started deploying in front of her house.
«She is waiting to see if she is going to be arrested or deported,» Wajid Hasan said after speaking to the former Pakistani prime minister by telephone from London.

Key question to consider.
Is it better to have a dictator who will fight against the Jihadists?
Or a Jihadist controlled Nuclear state?
I’m now convinced that you can have NO free elections in an conservative Islamic country. According to the dictates of Islam, they will HAVE to vote for whoever will install Sharia law… with all that it entails. Turkey is going through this now…
Any election in Pakistan would be rife with fraud.. on both sides, and the side that cheated more would win (just like Mushy’s last election)…
So, now you have to decide… Dictator? of Jihadist State?
Democracy is a wonderful thing… if you have an educated independent electorate… if not? you get things like has happened in South Africa… where a once propserous nation has devolved.

Good news! Civil unrest and a possible revolution in a country with nuclear weapons. And it’s even better when you consider that Al Queda could easily end up with the nuclear weapons.
It should be most interesting to see how the left gives all the blame to Bush and none to Musharraf. Actually, it won’t be, since the left gives no moral responsibility at all to someone with non-white skin, the US obviously manipulated him into a coup.

Now we know who has the power to change the country’s direction.
Al Quada and the Taliban fear Benazir Bhutto more because she has the right message and the people are more willing to listen to her.
As I recall Gen. Pervez Musharraf was really touted as an interim leader until Pakistan could hold honest and open elections. Masharraf’s worst nightmare was Ms. Bhutto ability to return from exile.
A similar condition is taking place in Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi represents the future for the Burma (the true name of the country).
If Aung San Suu Kyi and Ms. Bhutto can bring their country’s closer together diplomatically and heal the wounds with India they can produce a positive force to contain Iran, Afghanistan and other Islamic Fundamentalists.

The fundamentalist Muslims will stop at nothing to acquire nukes. The demon moon god, allah, compels them to kill as many people as they can and what better way than a thermonuclear device.
This is a prelude to Iran. Iran has got a bunch of 12ers now in charge and they want to create as much world chaos as possible to usher in the 12th Madi. There’s going to be a LOT of dead people, almost all Muslim, before this is over.

You got to wonder what India is thinking now. As much as the jihadist hate us, they hate India just as much, if not more due to them being neighbors and past histories. They almost had a nuclear war in 1998-1999. It would seem that our natural ally in the region is India, and not Pakistan.
reppac122 on November 3, 2007 at 11:13 AM
Really, Allah. If you believe that a pro-American regime in a country with an anti-American population is “jack squat,” then your idealism is bordering on delusion.
Continue to support the regime privately and speak platitudes about democracy publicly. My guess is that this move was taken with the blessing of the U.S. government. Musharaff has to know that we wouldn’t risk the loss of an important ally in the region, thus giving him a huge bargaining chip to be able to consolidate power in his country and still be viewed as legitimate by the international community.

Seems to be a back story that is not being talked about…
There has been a lot of violence recently with the taking over of Police stations, and beheadings…
IF Mushy knew the court was going to throw out his Presidentail election, right BEFORE his term ended, it would throw the country into chaos.
The only folks who win in Chaos is the Jihadists.
This is purely about internal Politics… Washington is NOT driving this show… but looking on from the sideline…

Romeo 13 is right. Would Chile be better off if Pinochet had been deposed and a leftist government elected in it’s place? Would it have been better to let Russia own Spain instead of having Franco take control? Sometimes a strong dictator is necessary to prevent the worse alternative. Pakistan should give it’s radical provinces independence so we could go in a clean house, but barring that this might be the best thing that could have happened. Right now Pakistan can’t handle democracy. If they didn’t have nuclear weapons it wouldn’t matter, but you can’t let the radicals gain power. Democracy in Pakistan would put us closer to nuclear war than any other time in the last 40 years.

Musharraf was never a friend to America. He just wanted our money and our weapons. He was always in the pocket of the jihadis. We need to declare them public enemy #1 and clean that rat trap up. Most of the jihadis are from Pakistan. They arrest a lot but it’s like throwing a towel in the ocean and saying you are drying it – look how wet the towel is. And we say ‘oh yeah, the towel is the best tool to dry the ocean’.
We should turn off any money and any intelligence that we give them. If they want to shoot at our aircraft flying over their country to Afghanistan, prepare to be taken out ‘death from above’.
ThackerAgency on November 3, 2007 at 5:16 PM

We didn’t ‘let them get nukes’. We didn’t ‘let India get nukes’. The reason our relationship with India was strained was because they violated the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. We didn’t attack them directly because they were not a threat to our immediate interests.
I don’t know where you get the idea that we ‘let them get nukes’. Remember AQ Khan? Did we let him give out nuclear knowledge and technology? I think we consider him public enemy number 1 and Pakistan celebrates him as their hero.
