Video: Jerks of the year nominees
posted at 9:02 pm on November 3, 2007 by Michelle
Three British lowlifes with a video camera taunt and bully an elderly pedicab operator in Singapore (hat tip – USAT On Deadline), rip him off, and humiliate him by posting their craven antics on the Internet. The New Paper tracked down the pedicab driver, Mr Lee Shee Lam:
The good-natured man works every day from about 5pm to 3am, and sleeps the rest of the day.
On a good day, he earns about $30 but on most days, he pockets much less.
Asked if he has had a hard life, he said: ‘There is no need to bring it up to other people. As long as I know, that’s enough. ‘Whether I am happy or not, I have been doing this for 15 years.’
Mr Lee was born without a right ear, and other than rheumatism in his legs, he does not suffer from other illnesses.
He lives with his wife and grown-up daughter in a Sembawang flat. His son, who is in his 30s, is married and living on his own. Although his children give him money, he still needs to work. He bought the trishaw for over $300 when he was 52.
He said: ‘I had no choice. No one wants to employ you when you are old.’ Mr Lee was an odd-job labourer when he was younger, and proudly said: ‘I also worked in construction sites. I had a lot of strength back then.’
He reckons he has two or three more years left in him as a trishaw rider. He said: ‘You need a lot of strength and I think I won’t have enough strength by then.’
Singaporeans and YouTube users are disgusted. So should we all be.
***
The New Paper tracked down one of the jerks. First-class jerk all the way:
Responding to our queries, Mr Bo Davis, 26, said he did not feel they were being bullies at all.
‘I don’t abide bullying,’ he said.

I don’t need to watch the video to get the gist of the scenerio. The poor guy gets harrased and robbed but then refuses to complain. Apparently wisdom does come with age in his case. I always enjoy listening to or reading the translatons of most asian people. There is an honesty and innocence about them that has been lost here in the west. The guy is a good old soul.

Lowlife jerks.
I spent my 21st birthday in Singapore in 1967. A couple of us took a ride around in the trishaws. What a trip! There was a lot of competition between the drivers and we actually had a race of sorts through the streets. One of the drivers was an older gentleman who couldn’t have weighed over 100 pounds. This guy pedaled like mad for at least 20 minutes and at the end wasn’t even breathing very hard. We were both amazed and humbled by these guys not to mentioned impressed. After the ride we bought our drivers drinks (sodas, they declined beer) and chatted with them for a few minutes through some locals who spoke English. In the end we paid our fare and tipped the drivers what I’m pretty sure would have been about a weeks wages at that time. I remember that ride fondly and I will never forget that old guy’s face as he drank his soda. We all came away from that encounter with a new found respect for all those folks out there working to get by. Singapore was great and so were the people. This guy’s a trooper, ya gotta respect that. The jerks…I just wanna kick the crap out of em.

That makes me so sad. And mad.
Sue on November 3, 2007 at 11:24 PM
OK, first let me say that yes…those guys are a-holes. Absolutely.
BUT…from the way this is described above, I thought the guys beat the old man and took his wallet. What they did was bad, but in the end, they were just run-of-the-mill jerk tourists who smoked a little too much somethin-somethin, or pounded a few too many drinks.
This is certainly far from the most evil things people do to others out there. The ‘shaw driver even said he’d forgotten about the incident. Too much is being made out of this.
JetBoy on November 3, 2007 at 11:31 PM
I’ve done my fair share of bullying back in the day, but I always knew where to draw the line. This poor old man is just out trying to make a buck, and these jackasses are breaking his balls.

Send ‘em to Glasgow. Who knows? Maybe they’ll insult an airport worker while they’re there. Heh.
These boyos remind me of “A Clockwork Orange.” I’d sure like to see them with their faces down in the spaghetti.
smellthecoffee on November 3, 2007 at 11:53 PM
They should be brought back and made to pull the rickshaw for the old man’s income for a while. They’ll get theirs.
One of the oddest things I experienced in Singapore in 1996 was a very thin and old man pulling a jinrikisha loaded with a sturdy young Japanese executive, yammering incessantly on the phone. The juxtaposition of the very old and very new worlds was really sickening and forever memorable.
It’s so bitter to decide – I could never hop into one and let a frail older person pull me, to my supposed enjoyment; on the other hand, that’s his necessity to make a meager living.
Our world if full of miraculous and very strange things. Singapore is a wonderful place to visit. This old man symbolizes why.

Sad. My dad was a McAlpine Fusilier when he lived in London and most of my friends work in the construction industry. It’s very disheartening to see an old person treated this way.

67 years old is just around the corner for these three losers. I’d bet Mr. Lam works harder in one day than they do in a week combined. To his credit, he didn’t allow it to take over his life by being bitter. I bet those clowns don’t have the strength of character to shrug something like that off.
Wankers.

I wonder how fast one of these jerks would go while pulling the richsaw that far.

I think the larger message here is how proud we’ve become of our abusive and impolite culture, so much so we video tape it and broadcast it to the world to behold.
Incidentally, wouldn’t be nice it someone set a paypal like Save Toby for Mr Lee? Seems the earnings from even a months worth of publicity would cover his retirement and allow him not to work…if a rabbit can garners 20 or so grand, Mr Lee is a bit more deserving.

TBinSTL on November 4, 2007 at 2:46 AM
Typical cop-out statement, sounds like Jetboy is a 19 year old libtard! The world has become so immune to this type of sick and cruel behavior that some in our society just brushes this incident off, like Jetboy did! If this is what it means to be a secular progressive you can count me out!
Unfortunately this is what “civilization” is coming to and it’s sickening! The wastes of human flesh, festering buckets of pus scum bags that did this deserve to be cained for starters, then they should be “set about!”
These spineless and prickless a$$holes aren’t worthy to tie Lee’s shoes!!!
Karma in 3….2….1!
Liberty or Death on November 4, 2007 at 4:40 AM
You’re right and I don’t know that I agree with him completely, but I certainly support Mr Lee in the way he has handled it. It is a small thing in the larger scope of life. Letting it go does the greater good. It brings the civility to the world that those Brit wankers will probably never contribute to their community. And this kind of crap has been around since the beginning of time. Just as love, compassion, understanding and other admirable traits have been around, their opposites have been also. There must be opposition in all things, or else we don’t appreciate the good. If darkness didn’t exist, we would never appreciate the light.
Mr. Lee, the least of us all according to mans standards, is the greatest of us all according to which ever higher power or ideal you believe in.
I’d love to see Topsecretk9′s idea take off. If we can donate pints for the hero of Scotland, we certainly can donate some money to the hero of Singapore.
csdeven on November 4, 2007 at 8:22 AM
Wrong…I’m a bit older than 19, and I’m far from a “libtard”…
All I said was that yes…those guys are a-holes and jerks. And that there’s far worse stuff going on out in the world, and here at home, to truly be outraged about.
JetBoy on November 4, 2007 at 9:57 AM
If there is one thing i hate is seeing innocent people being humiliated.
What to do with these scumbags? Bring back corporal punishment i say.
madne0 on November 4, 2007 at 10:51 AM
This has been perhaps the only unfortunate result of the deregulation of airlines in the EU, and especially budget airfare competition in the UK. You see groups of similar British louts in cities on the Continent — especially places like Prague — practically every night. About three years ago, my brother and I witnessed a group of drunken British louts (young, but old enough to know better) make a huge scene by making fun of a beggar in the Old Town. My brother — who was with me on his first trip to Europe — and I were so appalled and embarrassed that we cancelled a stay in London that we had planned for the return trip.
SWLiP on November 4, 2007 at 11:40 AM
I knew a bunch of Brits when I was overseas, and I have several friends who spent significant time in England. We all agree that the older generation are far more “stereotypical” of the generalization many Yanks have that England is a place known for its civility and manners. The younger crowd, however…rude, self-absorbed (and America-hating). One woman I know who travels to the UK 3 times a year told me “If you hang out with the 50+ year old crowd, England can be terrific! But the younger crowd will never forgive you for being born an American. You have no idea how much they hate us.” I don’t blame anyone for their politics, but to listen to younger Brits today, you’d think we bombed them last week and they want our heads.
What in hell happened in the UK?
thejackal on November 4, 2007 at 11:47 AM
If possible, the men who hassled the driver should be forced to make up the trouble they caused by doing hard labor at the man’s property or something similar. I’m talking back-breaking work. They need to learn to respect elders, or at least think twice about doing it to the next guy.
I would recommend other, more effective punishment, but we’re supposed to be a civilized society.

That was so sad to watch. Able-bodied young men making fun of someone old enough to be their grandfather. Why weren’t they walking for crissakes? Very humiliating for that man. Those little pukes, I hope they live to be that age and find out personally what it’s like to be treated that way.

According to mans standards it isn’t a big deal. Survival of the fittest ya know. But for some people, including me, it is an issue of respecting the seemingly least among us. The weakest among us. That guy has no recourse against such behavior. I think it is immoral to humiliate anyone like that.
