NY Gov Spitzer to hold secret selective press conference today

Yes, you read that right — a secret selective press conference. It makes as much logical sense as giving lawbreakers legal documents. Supposing they stuck to the schedule, it’s going on right now.
Eliot Spitzer, who has been getting mauled from all sides for his compromise plan on providing driver’s licenses to immigrants, is trying to sell it to reporters from independent and ethnic newspapers at an invitation-only press availability today.
A source said it’s happening today at 2 p.m.
Spitzer’s spokeswoman Christine Anderson said it was invitation only, and declined to specify where it’s happening.
UPDATE: A Spitzer aide called to object to the characterization of the event as a “secret press conference.” It is a sit-down with the Independent Press Association, a group that says it “works to promote and support independent publications committed to social justice and a free press.”
Nothing to see here, folks…

First rule of holes, governor…

Okay, so object to the words “Secret press conference”. I’ll just call it a “Selective press conference”. Think they’ll like that better?

Man did anyone else go to that “independant” news site ?

Once I see “committed to social justice,” I know that this super-duper secret presser isn’t for political “independents”…
Wineaholic on November 2, 2007 at 2:16 PM
You mean the “independent” news org. whose sub-heading is “the best of New York’s ethnic and immigrant press”? Yeah. “Independent”.
amerpundit on November 2, 2007 at 2:17 PM
Is Spitzer here legally?
Can we deport him anyway?
Rosetta on November 2, 2007 at 2:17 PM
I heard somewhere a few days ago that if you get a DL in NY, you also automatically get registered as a voter. I have no idea if this is true.
Any NY’ers here that can verify or deny?
swami on November 2, 2007 at 2:18 PM
Actually, when I was a governor’s press secretary I frequently criticized the press for their love of the word “secret.” Anything the press didn’t find out about in advance was labeled “secret,” even if it had been on a calendar that was public and 140 legislators also knew it. A closed meeting was also frequently labeled a “secret meeting” simply because the press was kept out. My argument that “It’s not a secret meeting, you just aren’t allowed in” didn’t wash with them. Jerks.

I know that some Court Clerks and the Republican party are asking that Social Security cards now be used for voter ID at the polls.
I think eliot is more upset with the Illegals protesting him than his fellow americans so he is trying to mend bridges with them
William Amos on November 2, 2007 at 2:21 PM
Hmm, maybe. I grew up in NY a about 10 years ago, so things might have changed or my memory might be fuzzy, but I never remember filling out a voter registration. Yet, I did have a DL, and I was on the registered voting rolls. So yeah, maybe… that would be interesting.

A meeting yes. A press conference umm thats a bit different

Governor Spitzer’s appeal is becoming more…selective.

Does this remind anyone else of the DHS “press conference” of a few days ago?

I’m not one to point out a person’s God-given flaws, but man–that dude has some seriously large ears.

Spitzer is Rove’s puppet. Only logical explanation.
No sane Democrat would think that struggling in a tar pit would get you out of this mess.
Think extinct dinosaurs.
PS: Karl – GREAT timing with Spitzer’s original pronouncement and Russert’s questioning!!

This seems more like a consortium of criminals conspiring behind closed doors on how to break the law and go unpunished. Is it a coinkydink this is happening in the State of New York. A move like this could have a duel effect. One to bolster Hitlery in the minds of the soon to be voter illegals. Second it could spill over and taint Rudy in the minds of uninformed voters. Like the Mexican picante salsa commercial cowboy says NEW YORK CITY?!!!

From the Independent Press Assoc. link above:
“create a culture” – a culture of … corruption??
The three tier license plan is pissing off EVERYBODY. I love it! What a great way to demonstrate the absurdity of lax immigration enforcement, amnesty, sanctuary cities, and all the other crap Kennedy, Bush, La Raza, et al, have been spooning out as “comprehensive reform”.
fred5678 on November 2, 2007 at 2:57 PM
Wasn’t Spitzer the NY State AG?
You’d think he’d know better.
mojo on November 2, 2007 at 2:58 PM
New York has a motor voter law, which enables anyone signing up for a drivers license to register to vote.
lawhawk on November 2, 2007 at 2:58 PM
Well spotted, but didn’t you get the memo?
Before reading every MSM article on “immigration reform”, you have to use global spell check (grep for Linux users) to change ‘immigrant’, ‘migrant’, ‘national’, ‘undocumented’, etc., to ‘illegal alien.’
fred5678 on November 2, 2007 at 3:07 PM
All states are required to allow motorists who are applying for DL to register to vote.
It’s the 1993 Federal Motor Voter Act.
Not just New York

FEMA’s faux press-conference was stupid, Venezuela’s radio and press conferences are surreal and this it Spitzer’s media fiasco.
And this says it all about the media - even by Harvard.
Entelechy on November 2, 2007 at 3:26 PM
As a NY’er, I object to you kowtowing to Spitzer’s press hack’s objection to characterizing it as secret. At the very minimum, it’s a selective press conference in a classified location.
I want to know how big a carbon spewing limo he’s using to hold the conference and how fast he’s speeding to stay ahead of the political paparazzi following him, so fix the header!!!!!
Oh yeah, and do it for the children!!! :)

The Dems are determined to get their illegal immigrant voter block no matter what. Folks in NY need to stop this.
dogsoldier on November 2, 2007 at 3:49 PM
Precisely. This IDs for illegals scheme is a counter to the voter ID laws requiring voters to show positive ID at polling places. The Dembots have consistently opposed those laws.
The whole thing is an organized attempt to commit mass voter fraud.
flipflop on November 2, 2007 at 4:00 PM
Lou Dobbs called Spitzer “lower than a toad’s belly” for his decision to give licenses to illegal aliens.
Spitzer relied on the usual shibboleth when he called Dobbs a “racist” for his illegal alien stand.
The truth is that these lawbreakers are criminals several times over in almost every instance. The first crime is criminal trespass followed (and sometimes concurrent with) document forgery. One crime for each document forged. After that the crimes diminish in percentage but increase alarmingly in degree and include robbery, burglary, rape, murder and other acts of violence and anarchy. The reward for all of this? You committed multiple crimes and are awarded for it.
The Democrats wink at all this because they know that legalization will lead to a huge underclass (soon to be joined by millions of friends and relatives) of welfare chiseling Democratic voters. What they don’t realize is that as the population quality declines we will, in fact, become a poverty-dominated third world country.
MaiDee on November 2, 2007 at 4:45 PM
Wow.
Do you think maybe he’s hired some FEMA people to help him plan press conferences?
darkpixel on November 2, 2007 at 4:56 PM
Selective press conference? Maybe he will run Homeland Security in under President Glacier.
clghitis on November 2, 2007 at 5:02 PM
New York, like California, is now off limits to me.
Jerks.
madmonkphotog on November 2, 2007 at 9:26 PM
And in New York, if the Democrats can’t get Amnesty, they will just get driver’s licenses which will lead to voter registrations, which will acomplish the same thing. Unlike Houston, which has a great Republican Tax-Assessor Collector who is looking for this type of fraudulent voter registration, I doubt New York will bother to try to sort out illegals from their voting rolls.
