Media Matters Hack: Tim Russert must be stopped!

posted at 5:53 pm on November 1, 2007 by Bryan

Date: October 30, 2007. Place: Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. Event: Democrat debate.

We all know what happened. Tim Russert asked a couple of tough questions of Hillary Clinton, one about whether she’d support releasing some HillaryCare-related documents and the other about whether she supports giving drivers licenses to illegal aliens. They were fair questions, but she whiffed both and the latter turned into a mini Waterloo. In case you want to revel in it again:

Media Matters, which denies carrying water for Hillary Clinton even while carrying a bunch of front-page items that carry water for Hillary Clinton, rides to the rescue in the pages of leftwing mag The American Prospect. Here’s the article, dated October 31 — the day after Hillary’s debacle. It’s written by Paul Waldman, described in the byline as “a senior fellow at Media Matters for America and the author of Being Right is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success.”

Waldman spends several fiskworthy paragraphs cherry picking at Russert, insisting that Russert’s blue collar act doesn’t make Waldman feel more represented (which probably says more about Waldman than Russert or anyone else) before finally getting to the coup de grace. Such as it is.

The two parties’ nominees will be decided three months from now, and we can be sure that in that time, at least one or two candidates will have their campaigns upended by the answer they gave to an absurd question, delivered by Tim Russert or someone like him, about what their favorite Bible verse is, or whom they want to win the Super Bowl, or what kind of beer they like. “Aha!” the reporters will shout, as though they actually unearthed something revealing on which the race for the presidency of the most powerful nation on earth should be decided. The one whose tiny little mind devised the question will be praised to the stars for his journalistic acumen.

And they’ll continue to wonder why so many Americans are so cynical about our electoral process.

Don’t you see, voter cynicism is all Russert’s fault! It’s not the lying politicians or their tendency to ignore the will of the voters on things like giving privileges to lawbreakers. It’s not their head-in-the-sand attitude on the war or their failure to rein in spending or just stop squabbling like 3-year-olds for five minutes. It’s all Tim Russert’s fault for asking “absurd” questions that get right to the heart of national security and the meaning of citizenship, that “upend” a candidate that, surprise!, helped found Waldman’s employer, Media Matters.

Thanks for clearing that up, Paul!

More: I find that if you’ve watched the above video 3 or 4 times and it starts to get old, adding a laugh track puts a little pop back into it. Comedy sound effects a la the Three Stooges work too. Tipster Edgar sends along a link to this video, which contains the quote that was the genesis of Russert’s question. Either Russert or his research staff is good — this clip puts a whole new face on “obscure.”

I neglected to mention in the main body of the post that this “attack Russert” strategy is coming straight from the Clinton campaign. Clinton’s grass roots supporters are particularly vexed at the though of their queen having to answer real questions for once.

I’m shocked, shocked I am that media Matters is trying to defend Hillary. I feel faint. I may have to lie down at the totally unexpected nature of this out of the blue, nobel defense of the Sainted Hillary….

/Okay, I have to stop before I throw up.

3. What’s your favorite beer?

Absurd??? Do you back drivers licenses for illegal aliens?

How could you ask such an absurd question as that!!!!!

Heh, Rusert a mean spirited conservative. The sad truth is that Russert is a pink panty wearing socialist lib who worked for Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

It’s to the point now that anyone to the right of Cindy Sheehan is labelled as a hard core right wing conspirator, and the MSM is in their pocket and plays right along.

Here’s to hoping the ‘silent’ majority does NOT stay home in the upcoming Most important of elections.

And Here’s to Hillary Clinton going down in flames. Hardcore flames.

I’ve just gotta repeat what I said in one of the earlier threads:

BONUS: Shouldn’t Russert be a hero to the left? I know, I know, the left has gone soooo far left, they think even leftist reporters are righties…. but Russert singlehandedly took down Scooter Libby (even though the entire investigation was bogus, and Russert had the same memory issues that got Libby convicted).

But seriously, the left is up in arms about Russert, but he should be their biggest hero. He was the driving force behind them being able to get some sort of conviction out of that whole sham investigation, which dragged on for years and portrayed the White House as “scandal” plagued. That sort of political gain for Dems was invaluable, and now they want him shot? WTF!? What do they want?

Poor Hill, two probing and spot-on appropriate questions and she tap dances, cries like a little girl and waits for Daddy Media Matters to come to her rescue.

Presidential material?

Not.

How many copies of Paul Waldmans’ book, “Being Right is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success” have been sold, compared to Tim Russerts’ book, “Wisdom of Our Fathers: Lessons and Letters from Daughters and Sons”?
Never mind, that was a blue collar question.

Buy Danish on November 1, 2007 at 6:59 PM

Too early, Hillary has been soft petaled her entire political career. She fell apart over a relatively soft question, that at this stage she could have said she was for some form of controlled licenses to illegal aliens, and not taken much damage. Her cries for everyone to be nice to her shouldn’t be wrung out until she gets the political nomination.

It pisses me off when her flaws get exposed so easily. I mean when the real race starts, and the republicans come out swinging, and even the liberal MSM will have to ask legitimate questions she will be demolished.

The right time to expose her is after she wins the nomination.

I have said before, and will repeat. I believe she will be demolished, and when she crashes and burns she will take the Democrat House, and Senate down with her.

Her entire political career is nothing more than a continuous smear campain.

Personally she is vapid, and deplorable, this is displayed every time she speaks un-rehersed.

When she goes against a candidate who actually believes in himself, and takes winning seriously, she will be shown for the fraud she is.

Haven’t Hillary’s stooges at Media Matters traced it back to Rush suggesting she be asked about the driver’s licenses for illegals on Tuesday’s show?

Russert has interviewed Rush before. The connection is obvious.

Can I make it any clearer?

Her implosion the past 48 hours is quite fascinating to watch.

The Clintons’ are piling on Russert because Chris Dodd kicked her you know what and she biffed it big time – you could see in her eyes when Dodd calls her flip flop out that she KNOWS she made a fatal mistake. You can see her saying to herself in her head “OH F#$#”

Bryan on November 1, 2007 at 6:48 PM

Good point. However what these sites say become “facts” in all manner of liberal circles, so I guess I’m assuming (perhaps prematurely and incorrectly) that Russert will be the liberal whipping boy of the week, and just find it rather humorous, considering his role in “Plamegate”.

Now that I think about it more, that is an interesting point – the far left isn’t all that thrilled with Hillary, so they may actually not jump on the “attack Russert” bandwagon, as it helped their guys (Obama and Edwards) gain a little ground.

Topsecretk9 on November 1, 2007 at 7:28 PM

Hillary Matters gets asked a couple of softball direct questions and blows her whole campaign to smitherines. It wasn’t ‘the six guys’ who were delivering the blows, it was herself doing the hitting. If your campaign wasn’t based on a room of glass mirrors, it wouldn’t be a problem.

If she can’t handle these questions, how is she ever going to handle the Mullahs. The 6 boys ganging up on the girl is just laughable.

Hillary Matters does not take criticism well. A quick review of the original Hillary-care debacle will show that. She only operates in sealed scripted environments.

What can you draw from that? She simply isn’t very bright.

tarpon on November 1, 2007 at 7:29 PM

I think Media Matters is actually doing us a favor by going back and recounting all this Hillary history for us.

I’d forgotten so many of these stories.

Buy Danish on November 1, 2007 at 7:31 PM

One other thing about those “Open letter” blogs – it’s interesting to note that right before Daou became Hillary’s blog boy he posted a big praise to the Chris Matthew’s “Open Letter” blog here and mentions Media Matters report.

Topsecretk9 on November 1, 2007 at 7:32 PM

What gall . . . doesn’t Russert know that her leftness, Hillary, must never be challenged or made to feel threatned. They’ll probably need to take Russert to the wood shed.

Great post, Bryan.

And that video really was entertaining.

The funny part was that it really wasn’t that hard of a question. She looked like a fish flopping around in a boat.

As for the debate … why is it that the odds of a Democrat winning his party’s nomination are always inversely proportional to how much I like them?

There are some decent candidates up there – and by decent, of course, I mean by Democrat standards.

I honestly can’t believe that when they’ve got Chris Dodd and Bill Richardson up there – both eminently better choices, enormously more qualified – and they’re going to pick Clinton, Edwards, or Obama. Aren’t they all one-term (or less) Senators?

How about a Tancredo versus Richardson race? Gingrich versus Dodd? Why do I have to get stuck with Rudy versus Hillary?

Democrats, I’m begging: don’t nominate that thing. If it’s because she’s a woman, find a better one. There are plenty of good female Democrats, more qualified than Hillary. Nominate one of them.

All she’s going to do is annoy me, disappoint you, get us all killed … and then go down in history forever as the first woman President.

Thank God there’s a black man running so that liberals can feel okay about not voting for a woman in the primaries. Obama really is a savior.

Professor Blather on November 1, 2007 at 8:44 PM

I wonder how much of Tims questioning had to do with the contrived Q&A he had to give her on his show in Sept? I am sure that her campaign had preconditions before she would agree to appear. Ya know, certain subjects were off topic etc. That was the week I quit watching his show, deciding he was a liberal tool.

But maybe he was forced into it by his bosses and by goodness he wasn’t going to be denied asking her tough questions? So, he took his shot here because Hillary could not restrict the line of questioning.

I’ve experienced that schandenfreude (or what ever it is) during my life, but watching that clip took me to new heights of giggling ecstasy.

Guess what HilClint and company are waiting on? Us. She needs to ‘gin up’ a base which is not even lukewarm towards her; I think she’s hoping to gain traction by enduring attacks from conservatives. So far the ‘Vast Right Wing Conspiracy’ has basically laughed at her.
Am I suggesting that she not be attacked? Not one bit! The Clintons track record is a ‘target rich environment’.
Just one example-remember the Whitewater records which went missing for over a year and a half which had been subpoenaed, and were found in a side room at the White House during their tenure?
We could ask Hillary to check all of her official residences for some of the papers which Russert asked her about in the Debate the other night. I would pay money to see her answer that question.
