Colbert would be in violation of campaign finance laws if he actually was on the ballot come election time. Criminal, time in jail type of violation of campaign finance laws. He may be up for making a joke of things, but I don’t see him willing to go to jail for the joke.

I’m a libertarian/conservative, but I’d sign Colbert’s petition were I a citizen of SC. God forbid we should have fun with such a deathly boring process as a presidential primary. Come to think of it, this is evidence that Rush is, as usual, right: The Demos have no sense of humor.

I’m not sure it’s constitutional for party leaders to decide who can and can’t run for president. Can’t anyone over 35 who’s a natural-born citizen run? Or is that what the petition business is about? Still, the Constitution doesn’t say a person has to have a certain number of signatures to be able to run. Just that they have to be a natural-born citizen over 35. The Constitution does grant states the power to administer and oversee elections, though. I guess that’s why the states have given so much power to the parties’ leadership and why they have rules about petitions and fees to weed out unserious candidates. Still, it feels more than a little bit unconstitutional to me.

The reason he didnt try to get on the GOP ballot, he says, is because they charged too high a fee — $35k — vs the low fee of $5k to try to get onthe Dem ballot.

Honestly, I think he just punked the South Carolina Democratic party. He was leading official candidates in the polls, and they told him to shove off.

Now, it’s clearly evident that Colbert is a comedian. However, Kucinich, Biden, and Gravel are all bigger clowns, and they get the nod. How is that right?

I think this is what he hoped for. Now you know what intelligent people are going to say? The Dems have been had. They’ve been outed as a committee that doesn’t believe in the freedom of the average American, even with the proper support, to run for office. Old Boys Club.
