Video: Absurdist Red Sox celebration image of the day

At about halfway through. At a glance it looks like an anti-American rally in Riyadh that somehow merged with a Red Sox Series parade.

I … think this means I have to root for the Yankees now.

My rule on sports teams is this, Cardinals, Royals, Chiefs (once they fire Herman Edwards). Then all mid-west teams after that. Kinda like Howard Cosell’s rule about New York teams, only smart.

What exactly is written on that green sign with the sword on it?

JetBoy on October 31, 2007 at 8:53 AM

thats gotta be the straight up weirdest thing ive ever seen.

ernesto on October 31, 2007 at 8:55 AM

I like how it’s intercut with Papelbon holding his hand to his ear.

Hark, the call of the muezzin!

Allahpundit on October 31, 2007 at 8:56 AM

JetBoy on October 31, 2007 at 8:53 AM

thats the saudi flag.

zane on October 31, 2007 at 8:59 AM

Must be a straggler from the “Peace” rally last week.

reaganaut on October 31, 2007 at 9:00 AM

Papelbaum looks like he should be hangin’ with K-Fed. I hate pro athletes.

LtE126 on October 31, 2007 at 9:00 AM

When you live in MA, you don’t have anything else to be happy about except for the Sox and Patriots…

Give us a break, huh.

Jared_MA on October 31, 2007 at 9:01 AM

The sign said “Go Yankees!”

csdeven on October 31, 2007 at 9:01 AM

Don’t blame the Sox for that moonbat. It is MA, there’s bound to be a liberal crackpot lurking wherever there’s a gathering of people and camera crew.

Casey W. on October 31, 2007 at 9:01 AM

Also, the Drop Kick Murphy’s were playing on the same vehicle that Papelbaum (sp?) was on; that explains the goofy visual.. audio was needed.

Jared_MA on October 31, 2007 at 9:03 AM

No human should be named Coco Crisp. That should be the name of a cereal. In fact, it almost is the name of a cereal, Cocoa Crispies.

zane on October 31, 2007 at 8:59 AM

Thanks…I guess I shoulda known that was the Saudi flag (not enough coffee yet)

csdeven….haha, I can imagine a Yankees flag in that crowd would have meant jihad! (But you have to say it with a Bah-sahn accent)

The more I watch that footage, the stranger it looks.

JetBoy on October 31, 2007 at 9:07 AM

Strange, I didn’t realize Riyadh made it to the play offs this year.

or

“Ahmed, you idiot! The rally is next week.”

holy wtf?!!

jummy on October 31, 2007 at 9:14 AM

Just to point out that most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi, and two of the planes originated from Boston Logan.

Does anyone REALLY feel safer with the yahoos in DC in charge? I’m sure that guy was harmless. . . but did you see any American flags?

CoCo is a nickname his real first name is Covelli

F15Mech on October 31, 2007 at 9:20 AM

Looks like someone snuck in, knowing the media coverage that would be there… This is certainly not some widespread issue… That said, I hope he got his ass kicked right after that video was taken.

RightWinged on October 31, 2007 at 9:22 AM

Weird

Weird

Zetterson on October 31, 2007 at 9:27 AM

Even for a Boston fan.

Memnon on October 31, 2007 at 9:30 AM

Don’t forget we have one of the largest college populations in the world (MIT, Northeastern, Harvard, BC, BU, UMASS, Tufts, etc., etc.) Who do you think was at a Monday mid-day parade?

TheBigOldDog on October 31, 2007 at 9:31 AM

Did you notice that the reporter had the lizardoid skin? Seriously.

Made my day!

Subsunk out.

Subsunk on October 31, 2007 at 9:39 AM

Might he be staging for a protest background?

Watch for the new and improved protest image coming to a newspaper near you (crowd already provided).

Or it could be reworked for use overseas?

Just a thought.

Long live the Crimson Jihad! Epstein akbar!

Allah, I’m guessing it’s a longtime reader.

CoCo is a nickname his real first name is Covelli

And it is indeed related to the cereal.

Why do Red Soxs fans hate our freedom?

Why do Red Soxs fans hate our freedom?

BohicaTwentyTwo on October 31, 2007 at 9:46 AM

The is Red Sox Nation, brother. The sooner you get used to that, the easier it will be for you.

nailinmyeye on October 31, 2007 at 9:49 AM

At least we haven’t multi-cultied to the point of the announcer saying “And there’s Papelbon with his signature move and, hey, Allahu Akbar, guys!…”

eeyore on October 31, 2007 at 9:53 AM

There is no Arm but Wakefield, and Mirabelli is his Backstop.

cadetwithchips2 on October 31, 2007 at 9:58 AM

Death to the Great Satan, Red Sox Nation!!!

kcluva on October 31, 2007 at 10:01 AM

Hey! the Saudis are our friends! Just ask President Bush.
You know what I saw? Happy people enjoying a great event. I didn’t even see a Saudi flag. Sometimes you have to forget about politics and stop to smell the Papelbaums.
Yes, I’m laughing. Trickrtreat.

Doug on October 31, 2007 at 10:03 AM

That’s freakin’ weird with the Saudi flag, and I spent some time in Boston back when.

Attila (Pillage Idiot) on October 31, 2007 at 10:19 AM

Hey. Aren’t those Celtic colors? Maybe it says ‘Boston Celtics’ in arabic. They’re just trying to horn in on the action.

pistolero on October 31, 2007 at 11:09 AM

In Denver, you might get someone holding a “Christopher Columbus Sucks!” sign but not the Arabic one we just saw.

If only… *sniff*

CliffHanger on October 31, 2007 at 11:13 AM

Papelbaum looks like he should be hangin’ with K-Fed.

For those who aren’t getting the Papelbon bit, it started here. And yes, he’s been spending too much time with the Dropkick Murphys, pretty much the Red Sox’ de facto mascots. But he’s having fun and he’s still a lights out closer, now with a new ring on the way. As long as he doesn’t break anything, it’s all good.

Islamic declaration of faith and it reads, “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet”.
