Comedy gold: Colmes accuses Coulter of anti-semitism

posted at 10:10 pm on October 30, 2007 by Allahpundit

Actually, that’s not quite true. He accused her of using classic anti-semitic language, which is his weaselly way of accusing her without technically accusing her.

She … does not care for the insinuation.

That comes in the last minute of the clip. The previous four are spent debating whether it’s politically correct for Christians to be Christian.

This does Jewish people a great dis-service. By wheeling out the “antisemite” card to someone who patently ISN’T antisemitic, they make Jews look like whining liberals. They also undermine complaints against genuine antisemites.

Absolutely true. To defend liberalism and get a democrat elected at all costs, Colmes plays the faux-religious card. Not gonna work. That he tries it calls into question his true religious feelings. Truly appalling. But I doubt any religious person of any persuasion buys his argument.

JiangxiDad on October 31, 2007 at 8:11 AM

This was Colmes at his specious worst. Colmes is an empty twit.

petefrt on October 31, 2007 at 8:11 AM

Should be:
But I doubt any religious Jew buys his argument.

JiangxiDad on October 31, 2007 at 8:14 AM

Ok, why in hell is FNC starting to piss off people like Ann and Michelle? This is a bad trend.

kevcad on October 30, 2007 at 10:49 PM

You know, I’m not so sure this is a bad trend. For one, it’s not all of FNC, it’s a few people on FNC. And folks like Michelle and Ann are perfectly capable of defending themselves with a strong case and logical argument, which is a good thing when it’s televised and lots of people can see it.

Ann Coulter for President!!!!

trainwife1962 on October 31, 2007 at 8:25 AM

I can’t believe this faux controversy is still going on. I’m not a Rabbi, but Ann can count me as one of many religious Jews that is not offended by her remarks, and appreciative of her long-standing support of Jews and Israel. Apparently her real mistake was not advocating conversion or death, beheading, bombing pizza parlors, and wiping Israel off the map. Then she might have gotten an invitation to speak at Columbia.

Sheesh!

ncc770 on October 31, 2007 at 8:26 AM

Anti-Christians are the new anti-semites.

This from and agnostic, btw.

N. O'Brain on October 31, 2007 at 8:36 AM

OK, Christians and Jews differ on religious matters. Christians believe that Jesus was the messiah and God. Jews don’t.

Christians believe that their religion is superior. If they didn’t, they could convert and become Jews. We Jews believe that our religion is superior. If we didn’t, we could convert and become Christians.

I do think Ann could have phrased her original remarks in a more sensitive way, but, even so, I can hardly fault her for believing that her religion is the best one, as long as she doesn’t try to force it on me.

In return, I’ll agree not to force mine on her (or anybody else). That way, we can all get along fine, and even have some interesting chats on theology once in a while, without the need for any stonings or beheadings.

morganfrost on October 31, 2007 at 8:47 AM

I don’t mind a sharp-tongued, mini-dressed woman representing my political views, but she’s not the best ambassador for my religious beliefs.

This was hilarious, because Coulter wouldn’t even have nuked him if he’d just dropped it earlier… but he kept pushing just a little bit more.. .and a little bit more, until Coulter was like “f*** it, you wanna do this?” Colmes clearly didn’t want to do it, and he looked like a stammering idiot when she unloaded on him.

RightWinged on October 31, 2007 at 9:30 AM

As stated on another board (yes, there are other boards!), the Great Crime here is that a Jew was offended.

Like so much harassment or hate crime legislation, it’s not what you said or did, it’s the fact that someone’s feelings were hurt. Like poor Alan’s… sniff.

Diversity and tolerance compel us to respect others’ beliefs, unless they’re conservatives.

Ann invited whatzizname (the other dude I can’t be bothered to look up) to church, and within minutes he’s equated her with “Let’s nuke Israel” Ahmadinejad. Let’s beat up on Ann Coulter and invite Ahmadinejad to speak at Columbia.

Love that woman.

First off that stupid jambroni Colmes needs to know you can be a Jew and not be a Semite.
As a matter of fact you can be a Semite and be Muslim in fact that is what Arabs are.

So know this
Arabs are Semites
Hebrews are Semites

The religion of Judaism can be practiced by any race.

All religions are inherehently anti-other-religeon
Even sub sects with in a religion are anti other sub sects.
Examples of this are as follows
Wahabi, Sunni, Shiite, Sufi, Ahmadiyya are sub sects of islam and they all think the other are on the wrong path.

Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism, Reform Judaism, Reconstructionist Judaism, Humanistic Judaism, and that freakish sh*t that Madonna does are all variants of Judaism. Each sect thinks they have the answer.

Roman catholic, Greek orthodox, Russian Orthodox Serbian orthodox etc.
Are all sects of the Christian faith and all think the others are doing it wrong

Don’t even get me started on the Protestant sects of Christianity.. while they all believe in 6lb. 8 oz baby Jesus they all think each other is going to hell if they don’t change their ways.

So Ann is just practicing her own religion’s brand of bigotry that is intrinsic in all religions.

TheSitRep on October 31, 2007 at 9:45 AM

Coulter is priceless. When was she on that clown’s show? Two weeks ago? We’re still talking about it…I need her to do my business marketing for me.

Jaibones on October 31, 2007 at 9:56 AM

Alan Colmes is such a hack. His arguments are always so cliched and easily dismissed, it’s pathetic. Here he’s just repeating the unspoken line of thinking that if someone who’s not a Jew forms a sentence with the word “Jews” in it, then they must be an anti-Semite. Also, a point about religious doctrine is taken as a sweeping indictment of the entire people group and that’s absurd. But, Colmes is just interested in the surface-level quip rather than getting to the actual issue.

CP on October 31, 2007 at 10:00 AM

She’s not a founder of this country or even a current elected official. What the founders gave us, and liberals are trying to take away, was the freedom for anyone to speak their mind.

Her right to speak her mind is protected by the Constitution as is the right to disagree with the content of her speech.

My point is that her vision of for America in response to Deutsch’s question, which was essentially “In the Ann Coulter’s prescription what would be different in the fabric of this country?” is quite different than the principles that the country was founded on. Some Jewish people are not OK with what she said. If she were Catholic and said that her dream for America was to see the Protestants reunited with the one true church so that America could be a Catholic nation, would we all feel the same?

dedalus on October 31, 2007 at 10:01 AM

Yeah, he’s terrible. He plays the role of “The Washington Generals” to Hannity’s “Harlem Globetrotters” every night, essentially making Sean look better in comparison to his lackluster intellect and mediocre TV skills.

dedalus on October 31, 2007 at 10:07 AM

Did you noticed how self satisfied Colmes was when Ann became offended? If he didn’t appreciate being offended, how did offending her become ‘right’?
I never knew he was Jewish until this interview.
What a putz.

If she were Catholic and said that her dream for America was to see the Protestants reunited with the one true church so that America could be a Catholic nation, would we all feel the same?

I would have no problem with this because there’s nothing wrong with a Catholic wishing the whole world were Catholic. I expect that of a Catholic. Or a Jew. Or a Muslim, for that matter. The only reason such notions get dicey with the Muslims is because they want to force it at the point of a sword.

Holy Crap, Alan! You take offense at Ann believing her holy texts. Which, carried to their conclusion regarding Jews, would, what? Change the Sabbath by a day? Allow you to eat pork, shellfish and cheeseburgers? The methods and doctrine of your worship would change, but the net effect on the daily lives of religious Jews would be nominal.

Counter that with, say, faithful Muslims who carry the premises within their holy text with regard to Jews to their conclusion. Rocks and trees screaming out for your murder, and 100 million sword wielding Muslims who are more than willing to oblige.

As a Mormon, I am neither Jew or Christian(tm), but I know which I find more offensive.

AprilOrit on October 31, 2007 at 2:42 PM

There are so many quotations from the New Testament concerning this matter. It’s, almost, like you don’t know where to begin.

But, suffice it to say that, if Ann Coulter would simply bring her Bible to her voluminous apperances on television, she could simply read the following [on-air]:

Acts 3:19 – Repent ye therefore, and be CONVERTED

Acts 28:27 – For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be CONVERTED, and I should heal them.

I’m beginning to think that Ann Coulter desires these accusations, so that the [inevitable] resulting firestorm will help sell her book.

A mere, citation of the above Scripture would put an end to the matter of what Christians “believe,” concerning their prayers for the salvation of the Jews. I don’t think that Ann Coulter wants an end to it.

Shy Guy on October 31, 2007 at 11:28 AM

I’m not sure how you make that leap. I did not suggest that religion can’t be criticized; you’re reading way too much into my comment. Colmes wasn’t engaged in criticism of Christianity. He had a prepared “gothcha” quote, with which he was trying to silence Coulter. The man obviously knows next to nothing about Christianity, so he’s quite out of line to dictate to Coulter what she does or doesn’t believe (or ought to).

Concerning Muslims, I don’t go for those who try to define what Muslims do or do not believe, such as the basic meaning of the word “Islam.” Does it mean peace or submission? I’ll give Muslims the benefit of the doubt that it means peace to them, provided their actions match their words. For many Muslims, though, the word means submission–at all costs, as evidenced by their violent actions.

Headline: Colmes accuses Coulter of anti-semitism
First line: Actually, that’s not quite true.

The real comedy gold here is the way Alan Colmes is suddenly Jewish and cares about faith. I can’t tell you how many interviews the man has done where the guest makes comments about the Jews (not Israelis) and Colmes doesn’t speak up on behalf of Jews. But… Ann Coulter appears and the man mentions his Jewish heritage? Give me a break!

No wonder Fox News built the show around Hannity and Colmes slot was initially listed as LNL (liberal named later).

twice thesitrep said:

The religion of Judaism can be practiced by any race.

Firstly,

Even though Arabs are semites, “Antisemitism” does not refer to hatred of anyone other than Jews. Even if this goes against an erroneous literal interpretation!

Yes – sometimes literal interpretations ARE wrong. “White people” are not literally white. A white American who was born and raised in Johannesburg is not an “African American”. A “black” guy (who is, of course, not literally black) can be an African American even if he has no ancestry from Africa.

Sorry to be touchy on this subject, but anti-semites use the “Arabs are semites too” argument to distract any discussion about their antisemitism.

Secondly,

Yes – the religion of Judaism can be practiced by any race, but it’s worth clarifying that Jewish ethnicity is not just a question of religion.

A Jew could practice any religion and still identify as a Jew. Jewish ethnic culture is seen in language, clothing, mannerisms, often in facial features, meals, music and humour. There is even a “Jewish” marker in the DNA. All these (and many more) aspects are Jewish without a contingent relationship to the religion of Judaism.

Of course many disagree with the notion that Jews are a race. Some prefer “ethnicity” or even “nation”. The nearest analogy I’ve found is, paradoxically, the Arabs.

The Arabs, like the Jews, can be a variety of races and nationalities. Arabs have their own culture. Arabs are strongly linked to a religion, but conversion to a different religion would not alter the fact that they are Arabs.

uptight on October 31, 2007 at 8:54 PM

Go Ann. Alan doesn’t know the Bible from the dictionary. There are no greater supporters of Israel than evangelical Christians.

Mojave Mark on October 31, 2007 at 8:55 PM

There is one major difference between Arabs and Jews: a convert to Judaism is referred to as a Jew, but you can’t convert to being an Arab!

This all makes me conclude that, as Jews, we are the members of a tribe – rather than a race or religion.

Also, the distinction between the Jewish people and their religion, means that someone could grievously denigrate the doctrines of Judaism without being an antisemite. Just as my views about Islam, don’t make me a Muslim-hater.

uptight on October 31, 2007 at 8:59 PM

From one religious Jew to another: word. I’ve seen this a million times in my interactions with liberal, irreligious Jews. If you’re Orthodox, you can offend by simply pointing out the obvious–like say, that egg matza isn’t kosher for a seder. Then you get, “Well in my Judaism, yada yada. . .” Now you’re attacking “their” Judaism (to each his own, apparently) even though it says right on the box of egg matza that it’s not for use at a seder except by those who can’t tolerate regular matza (the elderly, the ill, etc). Just read the box moron, and then go bitch at the Manischewitz Corp about “your” Judaism. This is the same crap here. And now, to dust off my #1 favorite New Testament quote, taking liberties for context, “Colmes see religion–but he sees religion as trees walking.” Heh.

I normally despise everything Colmes says and does and love Coulter for embarrassing “progressives” so deftly.

It’s a shame that Colmes only touched on the core of the dispute and allowed himself to have to face and indignant and offended person instead of one who did say something quite arrogant and odious.

Ann’s claim: Christians are “perfected Jews”.

1. Does this mean that regular Jews are flawed, imperfect, and inferior?

Ann’s new claim: “Christianity is the ‘fast track’”

2. Does this mean that Jews are stupid for “doing it the hard way”?

3. Are Christians inherently lazier than Jews?

Loundry on November 1, 2007 at 11:22 AM

The more I think about what Ann Coulter said in this interview, the more I realize that she and everyone else who is praising her in this thread is hitting Jesus Christ in the face with a diarrhea pie while he’s dying on the cross.

Colmes challenged Ann with the words of Christ, saying that those who kept the Law of Moses would be rewarded for it in heaven.

At that moment, Ann could have said, “Jesus also said, ‘No one comes to the father except through me.’ If you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, then you will not go to heaven.”

Did she say that? No.

According to Ann, Jesus Christ is NOT REQUIRED for salvation. Keeping the old law is sufficient.
