Anyone who gives my child something that objectionable (I don’t have one yet, so we’re speaking in the future) will see me turn into St. John the Evangelist and will receive quite the sermon. If my child wants something I wouldn’t want for him/her, feels deprived, and calls me a fascist, I’ll take some pride in knowing I’m doing my job right even as I dole out a grounding for the backtalk.

This is our culture dammit! And it’s not just TV! We have a right to watch a football game with our kids without having to tivo and censor it.

It is not “our” culture, unless you mean by that second-person possessive pronoun to include yourself among the morons who can’t stand to be in a room of their house without a TV on in the background.

The downward cultural pressure in TV is exerted chiefly by the mass audience that watches TV constantly. Constant TV watching destroys intellectual capacity, and a vicious cycle ensues.

Breaking children of TV addiction is the first step toward fixing that problem.

And it’s not all the parent’s fault!

How many hours a day are you watching TV? How many hours a day do your kids watch TV?

If you won’t turn the TV off, no matter how bad it gets, then you’re part of the problem, not part of the solution. Set a good example: Pick up a book and turn off the TV.

Of course, Pimpfants just seems wrong on so many levels. I mean, an assortment of tanks called Baby Beaters? A mini basketball uniform that has “Jr. Pimp Squad” emblazoned across the jersey? A t-shirt with “My Mom Is a MILF” imprinted on it? (Please don’t ask me to explain MILF.) Yet if this sounds like a fashion statement engineered by some urban rap artist, think again. The backers of the Portland, Ore.-based Pimpfants are three married white guys (two of them fathers of young kids themselves). One of the partners who preferred to remain anonymous (hey, wouldn’t you?) was only too happy to speak on the telephone Monday about the partners’ five-month-old company.

The first time my daughter complains about her clothes, we will be going to the goodwill store.

She’s in her late 20’s now and tells that story whenever she hears some weak parent whine about not being able to control what their kids wear. Good/strong/loving parents don’t need their kids to love them back. My philosophy was and still is: if your teenage kids don’t “hate” you at least once a week, you’re not doing your job. I always tried to “catch” my kids being good and loved them up for it. As long as they respect you when they’re young, they will love you later.

I hate to defend liberals, but I don’t think it’s liberalism as much as it’s ignorance and stupidity.

We fought and we fought over clothes, the meaning of modesty, and what it means to be classy…ect. I could tell you stories. At the time they are rebelling you feel you can hardly win, especially with all the culture acceptance of what they want. But I dug deep and kept at it. She didn’t like me very much during those years and that was hard, harder than I can say.

Thanks for saying that. There are so many tough instances in parenting when you have to dig deep and hang tough.

It’s important to talk about modesty and being classy. I never wanted my daughter to wear a bag, I wanted her to look great.
