USS Porter sinks pirates off Somalia

posted at 5:36 pm on October 29, 2007 by Bryan

It’s the Barbary Pirates all over again, only this time we brought a little more firepower.

U.S. Navy warship fired on and sank two skiffs used by pirates Sunday to hijack a merchant vessel off the coast of Somalia, U.S. officials said Monday.

The USS Porter responded to a distress call from the merchant vessel carrying benzene, the officials said. Sunday’s shooting took place in international waters, they said.

At the request of Somalia’s government, a second U.S. warship, the destroyer USS Arleigh Burke, is now shadowing the merchant ship inside Somali waters, the officials said.

If these pirates keep acting up, we may have to send Steven Decatur after them.

They shot the skiffs while they were tied up to the merchant vessel carrying benzene!

Fifth in a long line of USS Porter’s.

2. WWI

Well done Navy. Well done indeed.

LOL…sorry #4 list above was a different Porter. Blame Texas public education.

that’s a skiff? That’s supposed to be a military vessel? I’ve built better looking and more effective vehicles with legos, and they probably could do more damage

Oh sweet. The U.S. Navy is now working for Somalia.

Soon, the left will be crying “disproportionate force” and side with the pirates. Naturally, the Lynn Stewarts of the world will be flocking to Somalia to prepare a suit against the US Navy.

Amazing what a 5″-54 Cal will do to rickety barges. Hope someone has some video of this one.

GO GET ‘EM SQUIDIES!

I can hear the lefties now: “That’s not fair, a battleship (showing their ignorance for all things military) vs. a tiny little boat! It’s overkill!”

And I second what Zach said about the once proud Royal Navy.

Tony737 on October 29, 2007 at 6:25 PM

Oops, Darwin, I didn’t mean to steal your point, sorry. Great minds and all that.

Tony737 on October 29, 2007 at 6:26 PM

shadowing the merchant ship

Is “shadowing” really the right term? Doesn’t that imply following without being detected by the followee?

I would think “escorting” would be more accurate, if less dramatic.

I think we need a ship called the U.S.S. Pope Urban II in time for the battle of Saudi Arabia and maybe at the rate things are going parts of Europe and Dearborne, MI.

And maybe a new stealth bomber or helicopter gunship called the Genghis Khan.

The Arleigh Burke is a first rate fightin’ vessel that you just dont want to tangle with if you are a benzene-seeking jihadi in a skiff. you just dont.

The AB is a single ship, but is also the name of a whole class of DDG’s that carry Costco-size cans of whup ass.

Mike D. on October 29, 2007 at 6:41 PM

Bryan, the History Channel did a great show on Decatur. I remember the name from history class in school, but then again I went to publik skool, so they didn’t get too in depth on him or the battles he fought.

Picture if you will a small speck on the horizon near a freighter, suddenly there is a loud explosion, smoke drift in front of the camera, has it clears you see a splash of sea water, you hear great boisterous cheers from near by, and you notice the speck is gone (fade to black).
How’s that?

Gwillie on October 29, 2007 at 7:37 PM

It’s about time! These thugs have been shooting at and hijacking ships there for years. Earlier this year they attacked a cruise liner. It takes the U.S. and their navy, as usual, to come to the rescue of the worlds’ shipping in international waters to save the day. Why not hire Blackwater to ride shotgun on ships and cruise liners and you wouldn’t need the U.S. Navy.

It would be the H.M.S. Neville Chamberlain, but, as soon as it was launched, it would run for enemy territory, shoot itself in the aft deck and immediately sink.

Timothy S. Carlson on October 29, 2007 at 7:40 PM

Thanks for the video, Bill. I can’t stand how people have forgotten about Afghanistan since we went into Iraq. Sorta like how we forgot about Korea after Vietnam. A movie version of “Lone Survivor” would make the battle of A-stan last through the ages the way 300 will for the Spartans.

Navy SeALs, Green Berets, Fleet Force Recon and A.F. Combat Controllers (who need to find a cool name) are the Spartan Hoplites of this war.

Tony737 on October 29, 2007 at 7:59 PM

What we really oughta do is bring back the Iowa Class Battleships and let lose with her 16 inch main guns. You wanna f*ck with America? Eat THIS! BOOOOM!

Nice work Gwillie, you paint quite a picture :-)

It would be the H.M.S. Neville Chamberlain, but, as soon as it was launched, it would run for enemy territory, shoot itself in the aft deck and immediately sink.

Although I have always despised Chamblerain I don’t think he is as bad as contemporary appeasers.

For one thing he was acting on the wishes of the British people and they disgraced themselves by voting out the Conservatives in 1945 to “punish” them for enacting a policy they demanded. Atlee went on to squander Britain’s Marshall Aid on a socialist welfare state.

For another thing he technically started WWII by declaring war on Germany (hows that for a warmonger?) after the invasion of Poland.

In my mind he was a foolish old man who deluded himself and others but not as bad as the appeasers of today who simply don’t register the September 11th attacks and other terrorist attacks as fundamental onslaughts against Western civillisation.

A:Five. Four in reverse and one forward in case they are attacked from behind.

Did someone mention the USS Jimmah?

If only our government would turn loose the available means of deterring enemies from contemplating future aggression against our lands, possessions, and allies. For the Dingy Harrys out there, we can very easily conquer anyone we choose to, if only we don’t concern ourselves with political correctness.

And to correct the recurring question of whether we can win in Iraq, we have already won in Iraq. We remain in occupation there waiting for the Iraqi people to decide that they really want to win, as well, by actually taking the final steps necessary to purge their soil of insurgents/terrorists and take care of themselves. Our only troubles come from trying to prove that we’re NIIIIICE. We don’t need to be nice, we liberated a country, and they aren’t doing enough to help us clean out the remaining evil element. Nice must come to an end.
