NFL week 8 open thread

posted at 12:11 pm on October 28, 2007 by Bryan

Here’s the schedule. It’s a slack week for me since the Cowboys have a bye. Undefeated Indy goes to Carolina (where the 4-2 Panthers have suffered both of their losses), the Skins go to unbeaten New England, and the Vikings just might be good enough to do serious damage to the struggling Eagles. Will the Rams or the Dolphins pick up their first win of the season? Both are at home, and both will probably lose, though St. Louis probably has a slightly better chance to pick up a win.

Update: Heh.

I’m rooting for my Rams to go 0-16. 8 different offensive lines for each 8 games. Miami can’t hang with us! That #1 draft pick is ours!

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 28, 2007 at 12:16 PM

Miami’s at home. In London.

Their fans requested they stay there.

Giants 38-10 in that one.

JammieWearingFool on October 28, 2007 at 12:18 PM

A weekend with out the Cowboys playing doesn’t really seem like a football weekend.

Spirit of 1776 on October 28, 2007 at 12:27 PM

Giants win in Londonistan, convert to islam, return and behead the Cowboys for being NFL infidels.

darwin on October 28, 2007 at 12:28 PM

The Steelers play the Cincinnatti Cupcakes, so I’m not worried.

jaime on October 28, 2007 at 12:28 PM

Chicago native and die-hard Bears fan here. I live in the Detroit area and like to listen to sports talk radio at work during the week. I am SO sick of hearing how the Lions are good and the Bears suck. If the Lions are sooo good, then how come they put up 3 points through 3 QTRs on a Bears defense with HALF its starters in street clothes a couple weeks ago? Oh sure they put up an NFL record 34 points in the 4th QTR, but only 20 of those came against the Bears defense – which was probably dead tired by then. Especially after Brian Griese kept turning the ball over at the goal line and costing the Bears points the entire freaking game.

The Lions are such frauds, yet they prance around like they deserve some respect. Please. They beat a lousy Oakland team. Then had Minnesota hand the game to them in Week 2 when they had 5 turnovers and their (MIN) kicker doinked a FG that would have won the game. Then they go to Philly and get exposed as the frauds that they are. Then, of course the infamous Bears game. Then they go to Washington and get exposed as frauds again. And then they beat an average Tampa Bay team which fumbled twice, once at the freaking goal line, practically handing the darn game to the Lions to win. And they only won by 7.

Yeah, the Lions are for real. Please.

I am hoping the Bears put a serious beatdown on these frauds and shut them the hell up. It will be a great week for me listening to local talk radio as they rip the Lions as frauds finally too. :)

Go Bears!

A weekend with out the Cowboys playing doesn’t really seem like a football weekendis a major victory in the War on Terror.

Spirit of 1776 on October 28, 2007 at 12:27 PM

Fixed, sir.

In the meantime, the Patriots have some spare video equipment available. Deep discounts available for teams with fewer than 4 wins.

(Being from Massachusetts rarely affords a proud moment, but another World Series and a 19-0 Super Bowl run might make it all worth while, yes?)

A weekend without the Cowboys is a welcome respite from the canonizing of Tony Romo and his overrated team.

I be quick about it…Go Bears!

(Being from Massachusetts rarely affords a proud moment, but another World Series and a 19-0 Super Bowl run might make it all worth while, yes?)

I think the Patriots are going to slip up somewhere along the way. Not because they are not good enough to go undefeated, but simply because it takes a lot of good bounces to all go your way in order to win every game. During the Rockies playoff run of 21 wins out of 22 games, they had some luck and good bounces go their way.

Plus, I am going to have to root against them, just because the 1985 Bears stumbled along the way (to the Dolphins of all teams).

What I will be rooting for is a 1-loss Patriots team meeting the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl in a rematch of SBXX. Yeah, long-shot I know (for the Bears), but who knows.

Absolutely no mention of the Chargers returning to Qualcomm. From Stadium to refugee center caring for 10,000 plus back to a stadium in 7 days. Thanks for noticing Bryan.

Theworldisnotenough on October 28, 2007 at 12:59 PM

Hey, easy on the Browns! Dont be so quick to just hand the Rams a W! We are sporting a top 10 offense. Our D still stinks a bit, but we are one game away from winning more than all of last season. A+ for ‘progress’. And we are 2-1 in against the AFC North, division wins are big.

He probably figured, like most, that everything has been said; 10 times or more, multiplied by the number of pundits, writers, sportscasters, politicians, regular joes, bloggers etc… who have weighed in on SD. Really?

I am sure that no one is slighting the Chargers or SD. Take it easy.

In terms of football; its not too exciting. Houston isnt in the Chargers division, SD had been stinking it up this season; its kind of a weak week all the way around in terms of matchups. The best game is probably Cincy and Pittsburgh or Monday’s match up, Denver and Green Bay.

OSUBuciz1 on October 28, 2007 at 1:11 PM

My respect for Londoners just grew immensely. FOX is starting their coverage by showing the beginning of the Giants-Miami game and showed the singing of the National Anthem of the USA and God Save the Queen by Paul Potts (of Britain’s Got Talent fame). They politely cheered at the end the National Anthem and then they all stood up and sang along with God Save the Queen. That was quite the scene. I don’t remember the last time I heard a stadium crowd sing along – and be audible – with the National Anthem. Or God Bless America at baseball games.

Very inspirational. Kudos to the Londoners. And a great choice with Paul Potts as well.

Steelers take the lead on a 42 yard catch by Ward.

Zorro on October 28, 2007 at 1:31 PM

uh oh….St.Louis takes a 7-0 lead and is driving again. I’m listening because naturally the game has been blacked-out. But it definitely appears that in the stare down with Miami for the number one pick, the Rams may be blinking first. Uh oh…Rams have scored another touch down. How strange…They’ve just matched their season total up till today! (I think)……well, all is not yet lost…Hope springs eternal…anything can happen….stiff upper lip…It ain’t over till its over.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 28, 2007 at 1:32 PM

Here’s a factoid I first heard on local sports talk radio this week. Both Tom Brady and Payton Manning have beaten 30 of the 32 NFL teams. Since both have only played for their respective teams, there is only one team left for each of QB left to beat. Tom Brady has not beaten Washington, and Manning has not beaten Carolina. Guess who’s playing who this week: Patriots vs. Redskins; Colts vs. Panthers. (/cue the Twilight Zone music.) A nice preamble to the possible 8-0 showdown next week.

The Packers play the Chiefs next week. A GB victory means Favre would also reach the 31 team goal.

Mallard T. Drake on October 28, 2007 at 1:35 PM

My Broncos don’t play until Monday, and my adopted Texans don’t play until 3:00, so I’m stuck watching a bunch of tennis and soccer fans watch an NFL game. when they did a crowd shot, I even saw a guy wearing an FSU jersey. Shoot you can’t find anyone in Tallahassee that will even wear one of those.

Weight of Glory on October 28, 2007 at 1:37 PM

Londoners don’t seem to understand that you are supposed to get nuts at an NFL game. They sound like a very “polite” crowd, only responding to the results of a play. Sounds like more Giant fans than Dolphin fans.

I just came to the computer to make that exact point. I know it’s probably too much to expect them to paint their bodies, but man, it is almost dead silent there. In fact it is so quiet, you can almost hear Eli’s inferiority complex. Hee, hee.

Weight of Glory on October 28, 2007 at 1:49 PM

Have to give a shout out to my Oregon Ducks. They stared down the Trojans and climbed another step in the rankings. They are now #4 in the AP poll. The BCS isn’t out yet.

Next week: the ASU Sun Devils in Autzen Stadium. A win by the Ducks puts them in the drivers seat for the Pac-10 title and a BCS bowl appearance.

How about those UCLA Bruins: got worked by Washington State. hahahahahaha. Since Karl Dorrell has been coach, the Bruins have been a road favorite 19 times. All 19 times the Bruins have failed to cover the spread AND have lost the game! The streak remains intact.

But, listening to the NY media, he should have been there already, several times. He is the product of over hype because he plays in New York and has a “name.”

Off topic: I have never watched “House” on Fox, but from the previews, it looks like an incredibly lame and “trying to hard to be hip” show.

Mallard T. Drake on October 28, 2007 at 2:37 PM

Mallard, there aren’t too many sportswriters around here who’ve picked the Giants to reach the Super Bowl. He’s definitely not his brother and maybe was a reach as a No. 1 overall pick, but he does have talent and has made strides.

He’s light years ahead of where he was as a rookie on a bad team. If they stay healthy, they have as good a shot as anyone in the NFC this year.

JammieWearingFool on October 28, 2007 at 2:38 PM

Damn! Am I the only ‘Skins fan up and about today?

I know the Patriots are undefeated but strange things sometimes happen in the NFL. Maybe Joe Gibbs can do one of his ‘drop to the knees and say a little prayer’ things and bring home a win. I’m definitely not holding my breath tho’.

In TV talk, the National Anthem means “time for a commercial.” At Seahawks games, they have a giant flag spread out across the field from about the 20 yard line to the 20 yard line. I bet no one outside of Seattle has ever seen it. For any Queensryche fans, the lead singer sang the anthem before the New Orleans game.

Mallard T. Drake on October 28, 2007 at 3:01 PM

I agree…..it’s time to start showing the anthem again. Maybe Obama can practice putting his hand over his heart.

It’s only halftime and I have to leave, but I am going out on a limb here. Granted this is a pretty short limb. Brady is going to beat his 31st different NFL team and the 8-0 showdown will happen next week between Colts and Pats.

Colts will be home team, and they will probably have to give 3 points to the Pats.

alilianstrom on October 28, 2007 at 4:07 PM

Ugh, now I have to listen to all the praise for the Lions this week, because they beat the Chicago Bears on the road. The problem is this: the Bears suck this year. So the Lions STILL have not beaten anyone good. Plus, look at the 1st half: The Bears dropped 2 INTs on the first drive, doinked a 40 yard FG, gave up a 40+ yard pass interference penalty on 3rd and long to keep a Lions drive going that was going nowhere and then threw an INT in the end zone. With all that, the Lions were up 13-0. Yeah, big bad*sses they are!

The so-called vaunted Lions offense is doing nothing. Putting up 16 points and not getting much of anything going consistently from week-to-week is not the sign of a great team. And if Griese would stop trying to prentend he has a great arm and just sticks to within his game instead of throwing INTs in the end zone, the Lions wouldn’t look so good with those 4INTs. All Griese had to do was get the Bears in position for a FG and then get the onside kick back. They had to score twice either way. The guy threw twice into double coverage in the end zone and both times had it picked. Just throw the damn ball away and live for another play. Sheesh. He’s playing just as bad as Grossman. If this is what he is going to do, then just put Grossman in and see what he can do. The Bears season is lost now.

I still say the Lions are frauds. They have played a cakewalk schedule so far. But what I learned today is that the Bears defense is horrrrrrible. How the heck did this defense go from dominating the first two weeks against San Diego and Kansas City to allowing teams to gash them for 20-30-40-50 yard plays, mutiple times, every freaking week?!? And then on top of that, the offense turns the ball over 2-3 times per week, putting the crappy defense on the field for 2/3 of the game. UGH

Still, it sucks living in the Detroit area when the Lions are 5-2 and the Bears are 3-5. Really sucks. Especially when the Lions are still frauds. I will say they are better than the Bears, but still… FRAUDS!

Of course, that’s not what they will be saying here in Detroit. UGH

So… when are the Bulls gonna trade for Kobe so I can start rooting for the Bulls. Sad that football season is already over in Chicago. :( Gonna be a long two weeks with the bye this week.

Michael in MI on October 28, 2007 at 6:06 PM

Ok….31-0 this is getting ridiculous

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:08 PM

I really think that after letting the Dolphins put up 28 on them last week, the defense decided to shut down the next poor bastard that came along…has to be the explanation, because the Skins are better than this.

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:13 PM

HOLY…..(sorry Allah)….Colvin runs back an INT. OK,there goes MY pick vs. the spread…

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:15 PM

I’m well aware that being a Pats fan here is somewhat, shall we say? Frowned upon, but I was THERE in 1972 when the Dolphins beat us 55-0…I’ve followed them since ’70. So I’d like to think that it’s ok to gloat a bit…

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:18 PM

So what is the point really in watching a New England Patriots football game? I mean, as I recall, Dallas was in it for the first quarter -well, the Rams are usually in the game in the first quarter. And to think that Miami gave them trouble last week. They (the patriots) must have been sleep walking. Today, playing against the Redskins, they seemed to have rolled out of bed. But This is getting ridiculous. I mean, you’d think they were the Red Sox and it was the O4 World Series!

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 28, 2007 at 6:24 PM

The point? I guess the point is to see some seriously good football blayed both offensively and defensively…same reason the Colts game was on here today. The outcomes were assured, yes but really? How can you NOT admire greatness?

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:33 PM

38-0 in the 4th and the Brady Bunch is still in the game?

Is it just me or do you think Belechik might be running up the score all the time to compensate for something?

Kowboy on October 28, 2007 at 6:36 PM

Kowboy? he does it because he CAN…fear the hoodie

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:37 PM

Was just being smart aleky Blitz. Just my way of saying the Patriots belong in a different league only, there isn’t one for them to go to! And the Colts are a great team, compared to every one else but I’m not optimistic about a close contest being fought next week. The O4 Red Sox reference was my way of giving kudos to the Boston Area from a St. Louis guy.

That’s cool Nyog. and yeah,GOD help the Colts…but there is still one team I don’t want to play…Pittsburgh. The Pats, regardless of won/loss records recently, are in Mannings head so deep that Eli and Archie have nightmares.

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:37 PM

52 zip….wow…I have no words, but there IS this whole “Chesire Cat” smile thing going on…..

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:57 PM

the Redskins are a GOOD team!!!….for this to happen is inconceivable

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 6:57 PM

You may have missed it,but the Pats punter? has only punted 17 times this season…I forget his name, Chris something or other? but that’s an indication of just how dominant the Pats are. You can say they haven’t played anybody, but you’d be fooling yourself. The ‘boys went down easy, the Chargers stunk up the joint, Cleveland ain’t a BAD team and the Skins? got skinned

CRAP………CRAP CRAP CRAP

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:02 PM

I predict the Pats will put over 50 points on the Redskins before they finally score on NEs third string D. Also, that the Seahawks won’t lose :-) Pretty amazing, I know.

Ordinary1 on October 28, 2007 at 7:03 PM

Put Brady back in….this is getting serious

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:03 PM

LOL Ordinary…you have a firm grasp of the obvious!!

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:04 PM

Still two minutes left. Maybe the second string can score again! I was the only person I remember pulling for the Patriots against the Bears back in 1984. I still like ‘em.

Ordinary1 on October 28, 2007 at 7:07 PM

or was it ’85?

Ordinary1 on October 28, 2007 at 7:07 PM

85 Ordinary…and if Tony”I break if I’m looked at” Eason didn’t start that game???….Steve Grogan could have kept it close. NOT a win,but close

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:30 PM

so the Pats are up 38-0 in the 4th quarter, facing with a 4th and short from inside the 20.

instead of kicking a field goal to show the world they have SOME class, and that their organization is not a bunch of pantloads, the Rats convert the 1st down then score a TD for no observable reason other than to run up the score.

what a bunch of classless choadsacks, led by the Head Choadsack Homeless shelter-looking cheating piece of dirt clownboy Belichick. I hope Indy beats them like a red-headed stepchild wearing a dirty blanket riding atop a rented mule.

sorry to go all Unabomber, but to me Belichick may as well be Slobodan Milosevic and Idi Amin and Ted Bundy rolled into one dirt-ridden sleeveless hoodie.

Mike D. on October 28, 2007 at 7:30 PM

Although we DID lose our starting Tight end in the first quarter….it’s been so long I forget his name now,but without him? The Pats were sunk anyway….whatever, the DID “Squish the Fish” that year, ending an almost SOX like jinx in Miami

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:34 PM

Mike D.? Tell us how you REALLY feel!!!…..Chill son, have a beer or beverage or ingestible of your choice…Yes the Pats are running up scores. That’s a GIVEN ok??….thing is,It’s a game that’s played TO score points…what are the Pats supposed to do?? Take a knee EVERY DOWN after the first half??….Hell no.The Pats are dending a ,essage to the league…The annoncers touched on it a little today, and it’s all about this…WE DIDN’T NEED TO CHEAT…..God help the Jets, I expect a 100 on THEIR asses….

Blitz on October 28, 2007 at 7:39 PM

And I believe that that last post puts me into contention for TYPOIST of the year……
