Muslim prisoners to sue Brits for offering them ham sandwiches during Ramadan
posted at 9:45 am on October 26, 2007 by Allahpundit
I expect the conservatism of doubt will be weighing in on this shortly to declare it the newest front in the battle against torture.
The mix-up was said to have happened after prisoners were given their special nightly menus and they saw that one of the options was a ‘boiled ham sandwich’. Any variant of pork is strictly forbidden according to Muslim teachings.
After complaining to wardens, the prisoners were told the menus were a mistake. Many ordered cheese sandwiches instead, but some claimed they were still delivered ham sandwiches and ended up eating them because they were so hungry.
It was reported that lawyers estimated each inmate could receive as much £10,000 compensation if the claim is proved. Tax payers will end up footing the bill.
However the the Ministry of Justice said that the menu had been incorrectly printed, but denied that any of the prisoners were forced to eat ham.
“It was a breach of my human rights,” declared one inmate. “I want compensation.” He’s not kidding: the claims, all told, are for £2 million. Obvious exit question: Prisoners go on hunger strikes all the time. If they had such a problem, why didn’t they just skip dinner for a night or throw out the ham and eat the bread?

I found it revolting.

Skip dinner? On a fast day?
That’s cold.

Because ham tastes good.

No, you don’t lose all your rights in prison.

Pffft. Criminals have more rights than you do.
MadisonConservative on October 26, 2007 at 9:57 AM
This is insane . . . they will blow themselves up for Allah but they lack the self control to wait for a sandwich other than ham.
rplat on October 26, 2007 at 9:59 AM
Oh poor babies, maybe they need a hug after the traumatic experience with the sandwich.
Tyrs Fury on October 26, 2007 at 10:00 AM
Yaaaaaaaaaaaay.
You think it’d be pretty easy to prove that the guards didn’t tie them down and shove the sandwich in the mouth. It sounds like they’re going to claim they were so hungry from fasting all day that they had to give into the guards “torture”.

Sorry, I can’t sympathize with the inmates. My religion forbids swallowing baloney.

Where’s PETA when you need them?
Seriously, if pork had been served to an abstaining Jew or alcohol had accidentally been served to a teetolalling Christian or something (random examples) why not just wait for it to be corrected? Fasting for a day does NOT kill you.
Because it’s another opportunity for the SUE INTO SHARIA game, that’s why.

Britain is so far off the common sense mark that what happens there is only instructive as a warning beacon from afar.
We should not be accommodating prisoners by diet in any way, just as we should not be catering to Muslim demands for special menus in the public schools. Just where is the so-called “wall between church and state” in this case?
I’ve got one word for the meat my prison would serve: Baloney.

The biggest problem with Western legal systems is that they seem to have lost the ability to apply that most fundamental of all legal tests, the “Laugh Test.”
If the prisoners were complaining that someone had sat on their chests and forced ham down their throats, they’d have a legitimate complaint. The fact that they saw ham on a menu (they get menus in prison?), or were given it by mistake and decided to eat it anyway because their impulse control was so poor (hey– maybe that’s how they got to prison in the first place!) is not a claim that should be taken seriously by anyone.
morganfrost on October 26, 2007 at 10:15 AM
Strange, I know plenty of muslims here that own delis and pizza joints. They seem to have no problem touching the ham when they’re making the phat coin.
So when I come in contact with a Democrat, can I scream that my human rights were dissed?
robblefarian on October 26, 2007 at 10:17 AM
I think all prisoners should lose their right to sue over such nonsense. “Do a crime, do the time.” And quityabirching.

The qoran allows the eating of harram foods when circumstances are extreme. It allows the raping of slaves and captives when wives are not readily available for sex. It allows lying whenever expedient. It allows theft when for the advancement of islam (i.e., when a moo-slum wants it). There is only only admonition that carries no exception: a moo-slum must severe the heads of infidels whenever given the opportunity. Failure to do so is certain damnation. Aloha Snackbar!

If I was the Warden and these Muslims won this lawsuit, I would take away everyone’s radios, photos, books, Korans, Bibles, TVs, etc. And then I would serve the most bland food that I could get away with legally. And ban smoking. I would remove all the perks that I could get away with.
I would let the inmates sit in empty cells for a month or so, letting them stew over it, knowing that it was their Muslim co-inmates who are to blame.
…okay, maybe not, but that’s my knee-jerk.
Dork B. on October 26, 2007 at 10:32 AM
That’s not a bad idea. Treat everyone 100% equally poorly. Of course then everyone might sue, so maybe it’s not a good idea.

AP if they would be true to the whole show and tell then the bread would be considered tainted also. But that is all this Ramadan is is show. Get up before dawn and have a good sized breakfast then fifteen minutes before sundown have fork and knives in hand. Why don’t they have this in June when the days are longer and really make a show of it.
mjkazee on October 26, 2007 at 11:01 AM
Yeah, I know. You would have to stay within legal limits to avoid just that. Provide just the services required by the State, and nothing more. Also, you would have an incredibly pissed-off inmate population looking to riot. If you couldn’t keep a lid on that, it would be a ridiculous idea. But they couldn’t riot if everyone’s put on lockdown after the first incident, right?
The main appeal for me would be the other inmates putting the fear of (a false) God into the Muslim troublemakers. Just a what-if scenario, more than likely not feasible in reality. Especially not in the UK.
Here’s another fun scenario that would never happen: Award the inmates their monetary compensation in cash. Make them keep it in their cells, or on their persons – that would be fun! Of course, my imagined Muslim victims would be of the Jihadist variety, not common criminals.

If they would only convert to the religion of Pork, there lives would improve a great deal. How can you go through life without enjoying the meat of the magical pig. From snout to tail, it never fails.
deadbackpacker on October 26, 2007 at 11:41 AM
The choice to eat or not eat was theirs, I dont care how hungry they were. And not eating for one day isn’t so bad, ask any GI or former GI if they missed any meals or if they cried to their mommies about it.
And are they or are they not the same pukin thugs that would cut off -our- heads given half a chance?
If they don’t like the food in prision, that’s just too damn bad. Like the first poster said, boo hoo hoo.

Oh, Allah. You can’t play to the liberal media nearly as easily if you throw out the offending meat. You have to eat it and then complain about religious persecution.

STFU and just eat the sandwich.
or better yet ask for a bbq pork sandwich now thats good eaten
Mojack420 on October 26, 2007 at 12:59 PM
It’s no less annoying when people use lame anecdotes to support what I believe than it is when they support that which I don’t.
Furthermore the blanket implication that muslims are somehow more materialistic than religious is just lame. This is the same religion that inspires people to leave behind all their worldly possessions by blowing themselves up.
I understand you’re annoyed. But emotionalism should not supplant rationalism.
The Race Card on October 26, 2007 at 1:01 PM
you don’t eat the bread because it still has a taint of pork on it – Jews are the same way with their cooking utensils, some of the strictest adherence to kashrut have separate sets of everything (pots, pans, dishes, utensils) for meat and milk products.
If you eat it, even after getting the ham sandwich, that’s ASSUMPTION OF THE RISK. Those muslim prisoners are proclaiming themselves to be so weak of spirit and faith that at their hungriest point, they still ate forbidden food. How pathetic
Defector01 on October 26, 2007 at 1:10 PM
A Muslim family I used to know wouldn’t eat durring the day(durring Ramadan) but would binge at night.

MirCat on October 26, 2007 at 1:33 PM
Ramadan says you can’t eat during the day BUT muslim scholars took that to mean you could before and after daytime so that’s what they do
Defector01 on October 26, 2007 at 1:46 PM
You lose a lot of rights in prison. Prison is punishment.
There have to be limits on physical accomodation of religions. They get their books, they get to pray. We do not supply special altars and chickens for voodoo sacrifice but you can pray to the voo-doo hoo-doo all you want.
I am sick of these people. They are criminals. Shut up and take your punishment. Atheist prisoners have valid reasons not to eat non organic food or preservatives. Should they be forced to eat chicken nuggets just because they do not believe in God?
Cruel and unusual punishment is sitting in the top floor of the WTC waiting for the flames to eat your behind. Cruel and unusual punishment is being forced to convert to islam or get your head chopped off. These islamist turkeys do not understand our American definition of cruel and unusual punishment.
If you want the wuss treatment get locked up in San Francisco and they will let you run the prison. Otherwise obey the law

I didn’t eat for 21 hours beginning Wed night and ending after 5 pm yesterday because of medical tests I had yesterday. Not.a.big.deal. I have been known to go for more than a day without eating because I get busy and forget or don’t get around to it.
These are a bunch of weak willed whine bags with nothing better to do than sit around and think of ways to be offended. Whether they are in jail or on the street, they will always be imprisoned by their religion and perpetual outrage.
