Ayaan Hirsi Ali now accepting donations for security

This is where we get to see what you’re made of. The Dutch pulled the rug out from under her so she’s going to have to do this the old-fashioned way. Donation details follow from AEI.
Providing Financial Assistance for Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s Security Detail
Ayaan Hirsi Ali, former Dutch parliamentarian and an outspoken defender of women’s rights in Islamic societies, is at risk from a variety of extremist threats in both Europe and the United States. She has needed constant security protection since her life was originally threatened in 2002. Up until October 1, 2007, this protection was provided by the Dutch government.
Now a permanent resident of the United States and a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, Ms. Hirsi Ali must raise her own funds to finance her costly—but necessary—protection. In response to the numerous private citizens who have expressed interest in helping Ms. Hirsi Ali fund her security detail, the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust has been established.
The preferred and most immediate way to assist Ms. Hirsi Ali in the financing of her private security protection is through the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust. This private trust fund can accept non-tax deductible donations from within the United States and internationally, and is entirely dedicated to financing Ms. Hirsi Ali’s security.
Checks should be made payable to the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust and sent to:

I’m good for $50 and a box of ammo if she’ll tell us what she packs.
RedWinged Blackbird on October 26, 2007 at 9:09 PM
The best money I’ve spent this month. Someone needs to hook her up with PayPal.
deesine on October 26, 2007 at 9:10 PM
Really makes one want to puke when you hear Valerie Plame complain on TV on a publicity tour making money when you read about actual courageous women living in REAL fear like Ayaan Hirsi Ali, doesn’t it?
Topsecretk9 on October 26, 2007 at 9:13 PM
As my name suggests I’m Dutch, ashamed to be Dutch but dutch…
I’m of course in for at least $100.
I second “deesine” and confirm it would be much appreciated if the Ayaan Hirsi Ali Security Trust could set up a paypal account.
Flying Dutchman on October 26, 2007 at 9:24 PM
I hope this gets spread around, I posted it on my blog…not that I have a lot of readers, but I have a few who will post it too.
Bad Candy on October 26, 2007 at 9:47 PM
yes, paypal please.
CrimsonFisted on October 26, 2007 at 9:51 PM
While I oppose gun control, I resent the values of RedWinged Blackbird in talking about a “box of ammo”. Some people wish to spend their times in ways besides self-defense. And I think even RedWinged Blackbird would have to admit that it is more important that Ayaan Hirsi Ali is successful in her message than her ability to fight off Jihidis. In fact, it is most important that she prioritize her time to win the intellectual debate and leave the ammos and guns to men (and some small fraction of women) better able to cope with Jihidis.
O my sister Ayaan, my sister, my sister Ayaan! would God I had died for thee, O Ayaan, my sister, my sister! (An atheist’s appopriation of 2 Samuel 18:33–KJV)

Find a paper bag and breathe, he probably means for her security team or that it never hurts to carry your own in case all hell breaks loose, there’s nothing offensive there unless you’re looking for it. Relax.
Bad Candy on October 26, 2007 at 10:10 PM
She can’t do one without the other now, can she?
Buy Danish on October 26, 2007 at 10:13 PM
Best point made all day. Hypocrites Valerie Plame and her husband Joe Wilson are allowed to skate on lies and most probably have little in the way of security worries and Ayaan Hirsi Ali speaks only the truth and fears for her life every minute.
Speakup on October 26, 2007 at 10:26 PM
yeah who’s the marketing genius that didn’t set up a paypal account for her?
I did not know people still used tose so called cheques or chex.
I am not so good with anachronistic nomenclature.
TheSitRep on October 26, 2007 at 10:42 PM
Oh jeeez, get over yourself man.
Exactly. As if Plame was ever in danger from anyone or anything other than maybe breaking a nail.
infidel4life on October 26, 2007 at 10:44 PM
If they’d take AmEx I’d donate over the web right now. As it is I’ll put a check in the mail tomorrow. God bless her.
Thomas the Wraith on October 26, 2007 at 10:46 PM
I think I’ll spend the money on something useful like a vampire movie and lunch. I’m skeptical about the ” is at risk from a variety of extremist threats in … the United States.”
I can understand it in Europe, it’s full of liberal pussies who would rather cut their children’s throat before they harm a criminal, but plenty of people mock Islam in America without getting their melon chopped off.
Darth Executor on October 26, 2007 at 10:47 PM
I think RedWinged Blackbird was bringing levity to the situation.
I thought it was witty.
TheSitRep on October 26, 2007 at 10:47 PM
Besides, no one ever had too much ammo.
TheSitRep on October 26, 2007 at 10:48 PM

Excellissimo! $500(NZ) goes to lovely Ayaan.
FierceGuppy on October 26, 2007 at 11:48 PM
I, too, wish there was PayPal or at least an online direct credit card setup. Allah or Michelle, do you think you could ‘consult’ with her on setting up something like that tomorrow?
With PayPal, she could even set it up for accepting regular monthly donations automatically.
I’ll send a check if necessary, but I prefer to not write checks if not absolutely necessary.
LegendHasIt on October 26, 2007 at 11:52 PM
I’m on board with that Paypal thing, too. I’ll send a check if need be, but Paypal is preferable.

infidel4life on October 27, 2007 at 12:36 AM
Worst timing. If I hadn’t just spent two grand in the last two weeks getting my car repaired…
I’ll do something. Somehow.
MadisonConservative on October 27, 2007 at 1:07 AM
Same here, I’ll give some pretty fair amount monthly.
I don’t even have checks anymore, nor seen any, since… over 10 years… Only CC’s
Flying Dutchman on October 27, 2007 at 1:35 AM
I have seen a number of good comments from you but I think that you were a little too fast on the draw here. I think that RedWinged Blackbird was mostly being humorous and metaphorical with the box of ammo bit.

Indeed – send I will Saturday. Best cause this year. Also, e-mail all of same persuasion and explain who this lady is. Not everyone knows why this is so important.
Entelechy on October 27, 2007 at 2:16 AM
They’re after her here, they’re after her there
Those Islamos are after Ayaan everywhere
She tells it like it is about how Islam’s such a pest
And the Islamos almost go into mental arrest
She can’t count on the Dutch
They’re as useless as a rubber crutch
If those Islamos should do her bad
We will all feel so sad
So be a man
And give what you can

It’s late at night
So this is the best I can come up with try as I might

Do you have a link for that AEI announcement? I tried to find something on their (most boring evah!) website and came up empty. Are they trying to avoid publicity? Not exactly the recommended approach to raising money where I come from.
JM Hanes on October 27, 2007 at 4:31 AM
If she / they are to stupid to set up a paypal deal then maybe it aint worth saving her.
joke
TheSitRep on October 27, 2007 at 9:20 AM
They came for Ayaan Hirsi Ali, and I did nothing.
They came for … {you know the quote}
I am very glad to see folks stepping up to help.
Lawrence on October 27, 2007 at 9:53 AM
Allah, can Ayaan set up a Paypal account please?
I’ve got a Paypal account with money sitting in it and it’d be a lot easier for me to transfer to another Paypal account than for me to send the money to my personal account in France and then wire it to Ayaan’s US account. Not to mention the transaction fees involved.
Thanks.
Aylios on October 27, 2007 at 10:06 AM
So? They’ll have a hard time finding an American Muslim willing to go kill her. Terrorists excluded, obviously, but I doubt they’d blow their cover and possibly their whole cell’s cover just to kill one woman.
Darth Executor on October 27, 2007 at 10:32 AM
Infidel, good idea emailing…please keep us updated on what you hear. I really don’t want to do anything until they have a Paypal account.
No offense to Ayaan, who I admire beyond words, but I need a KNOWN and trusted third party to take my money. I can’t justify sending to an unfamiliar address.
tickleddragon on October 27, 2007 at 10:54 AM
Yeah, cuz they’d never think to send someone with no obvious connections over our highly secured borders, or through our airports on a traveler’s or student visa, or some random guy with a case of Sudden Jihad Syndrome comes along. Neeeever happen. Don’t be stupid.
Bad Candy on October 27, 2007 at 10:57 AM
Her security is so important. Unless of course it inconveniences me by my having to remove my fingers from the key board. hummmm……
scooter on October 27, 2007 at 11:09 AM
If she established a PayPal or secure website for CCs, I’ll donate as well. I hate writing checks.
I just did a quick scan and I didn’t see a URL that I can link to on my blog. If anyone knows it, can you please post it here?

Mooseman on October 27, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Oh, nonsense. First of all, no one has said they would only help if she used Paypal. Second, if a Paypal arrangement can be established, she can get a lot more money even faster. More money more quickly means security sooner. Get it?
Kensington on October 27, 2007 at 11:38 AM
if this is even legit (which I doubt), her security costs 3 million a year.
I recommend waiting for a while, or maybe donating to your local women’s shelter if you want to protect people. Or Humane shelter.

.
.
I don’t want to hear anymore complaints from any of you.
And for those who don’t think this is a worthy cause, Darth Executor et al, you are exposing yourself for the uneducated, uninformed, biased, liberals that you are.
So thanks for exposing yourself.
Don’t expect me or any thinking person to feed your trollish comments around these parts any longer.
You are full of it, and therefore worthless contributors.
Mcguyver on October 27, 2007 at 1:19 PM
Why not do all of that and also contribute to Ayaan?
Kensington on October 27, 2007 at 1:20 PM
Don’t be a jerk, scooter… Some of us are CAREFUL and suspicious of where we send our money. I just want a third party I recognize, have used in the past, and trust.
Sending money through the mail is risky, and not necessarily the brightest thing to do these days.
I love Ayaan, and I want to help…but this has nothing whatever to do with whether I remove my fingers from the keyboard or not…only with being smart with my money.
tickleddragon on October 27, 2007 at 1:28 PM
Clarke Howard would approve, I’m sure. ROFL.
tickleddragon on October 27, 2007 at 1:28 PM
Good research, Mcguyver! The only question I have now is, has anyone already set up a banner? Or do we all just set up our own? I don’t want to double up on someone else’s effort.

What happened to the email contact numbers that were in the original post?
JM Hanes on October 27, 2007 at 2:48 PM
Eh, out of an abundance of caution I removed them. AEI’s putting them out there but I think it’s a mistake.

I received an e-mail back from John Matteo. It read:

Thank you for your email, we have received several similar requests and first thing Monday morning we will check with the Bank to see what arrangements can be made.

I understand the caution. AHA (initials seem appropriate, don’t they?) now has the info posted on her (official?) blog, with the email addresses for inquiries, and a link to the home page of the law firm that is, one can only assume, charged with managing, as well as setting up, the trust, Jackson & Campbell.
While AHA has offices at AEI, it looks to me like the trust is not actually being officially sponsored by AEI, but is being set up by AHA privately. This is something that should probably be clarified. I don’t mean to imply that that’s necessarily a bad thing, and given how a lot of folks feel about AEI outside of conservative circles, some degree of separation may, in fact, be a good thing. Absent a recognized institutional sponsor, however, it will be important — for what will presumably be long term fund raising efforts — to establish the bona fides of this Trust in a more formal way.
At a minimum, AHA should be able to provide a clear, official, statement of purpose for the Trust and specific contact information for the Trustee who, in turn, should be able to provide legal assurances to contributors that the funds will be used for the stated purposes. Interestingly, a search for AHA on the Jackson & Campbell site, pulls up a single link to a PDF on What You Need To Know About Recent Changes To The Concept Of “Trust Income” Under State Law And The Code. A private trust is a differnt kind of legal entity (and of relevance here, notably less transparent) than a charitable foundation.
AHA is clearly responding to the expression of widespread interest in supporting her security needs, and I fully intend to lend a hand, but there’s potentially a lot of money involved here which means a potentially massive PR debacle if it’s handled in too casual a fashion. According to another email. in circulation, her office is also setting up a separate “public U.S. charity (501(c)(3)) that will support Muslim dissidents around the world.” Worthy causes both, but I do hope that Ms. Ali has contemplated the full burden of administration and accountability that such endeavors require!

I’ll wait before re-posting the comment that just went into the “awaiting moderation” bin, assuming it will eventually make an appearancehere, but I’d sure love to know what on earth in it could possibly have flagged the censor?

1) because I don’t trust the Ayaan fund
2) because I’m not made out of money

Does that Tax ID number really need to be after the address on the envelope?
Tanya on October 28, 2007 at 9:15 AM
Yeah, it happens so often anti-islamic speakers are practically growing in trees impaled on branches with their guts hanging out. The amount of paranoia about muslims hiding under every rock waiting for an infidel to open his mouth so they have an excuse to shove a scimitar down their thorat is starting to border on comedy.
Darth Executor on October 28, 2007 at 11:22 PM
Whether or not that were true, how does that remotely bear on this particular case here?
A case where, by all accounts, the number and severity of death threats do not rise and fall with the general level of “paranoia” or hysteria, real or imagined, but remain steady throughout?
