I don’t see much diference between witchcraft and atheism. Both are basically anti-God, with a belief that man is the center of all things, or worse, man is nothing. Pretty pathetic way to go through life, I think.

This reminds me of some people I work with who would say that Christianity is “boobism” (Matt Taibbi’s word) but assign all sorts of significance to Chinese and Indian spirituality etc etc. Going to church makes you a radical and a fool; thinking the earth is speaking to you through the river and the wind is enlightened.

Oh well. Maybe I should move.

BillLalor on October 24, 2007 at 11:15 PM

So basically, it sounds like poeple just need a hug, but also a good spanking as a kid whenever they act up or throw a tantrum like a liberal when ever they don’t get their way. Only then will they see that there is more to life than them. Infact, if they were disciplined as children, they probably wouldn’t grow up to be liberals!

El Guapo on October 24, 2007 at 11:16 PM

I think Modernity has sought to remove mystery, enchantment, the divine, whatever you want to call it. And why? We pretend that Modern humanity has all the answers, but do we? I don’t think so – and many begin to realize that the myth of unfettered human progress through intelligence and scientific method that Modernity has promised has not come to the fruition that we had all hoped. Modernity, for many, has disappointed.

And we begin to remember that, yeah, there might be something out there bigger than us – I happen to believe it is God.

nailinmyeye on October 24, 2007 at 11:16 PM

AZCON on October 24, 2007 at 11:11 PM

I disagree.

Witchcraft believes in something bigger than one’s self. It could be a sort of power that exists in connection to all things, it is more likely something in relation to the earth and nature. But I think that the point is that there is something “enchanted,” “mysterious,”something that humans can’t explain, in all of it.

Atheism, and, it may not be all atheism, but much of it, still relies on Modern suppositions of progress, scientific rationality, and human reason. These things are not, in and of themselves “bad.” In fact, I think that they are all good, and if we didn’t have these things, life would pretty much suck (science has made my life much more comfortable than those, say, before the Enlightenment). I just think that these things in isolation do not account for all that there is.

“We need enchantment in our lives because our world has become disenchanted. We need faith that promises something bigger and better than what we have.”

Worry not. “I have a million ideas, but America can’t afford them all” – - Hillary Clinton

I could use a tiny bit of enchantment right now. Not even a half mile away from home about 150 homes burned yesterday, and tonight the winds are still, but shifting westward – the night is very critical. Area still evacuated. I’m still on a business trip, teaching and battling liberals who think “whites” and the “rich” are being treated well by the gov’t in Calif. It’s hard to concentrate, but work/live one must, and in miracles to believe one must too. This from a staunch realist.

Entelechy on October 24, 2007 at 11:36 PM

nailinmyeye so how do atheists explain the unexplainable?

El Guapo on October 24, 2007 at 11:37 PM

I don’t see much diference between witchcraft and atheism religion. Both are basically anti-God beliefs in invisible things, with a belief that man is the center of all things, or worse, man is nothing going to burn. Pretty pathetic way to go through life, I think.

Jaibones on October 24, 2007 at 11:38 PM

Leftists and liberals alike are attracted to witchcraft and similar animist-style beliefs because it fulfills the human desire for a belief in powerful forces to which one can seek guidance or help, but, unlike Christianity, and this is what they like so much, it seems to come without any morality, especially as it pertains to sexual matters. So, for a liberal, this is like the best of both worlds.

What they don’t understand, or won’t admit to themselves, is that this is merely the flip side of Christianity, the dark side.

jihadwatcher on October 24, 2007 at 11:39 PM

-Entelechy

I used to think that, until i grew up and paid attention in class and adopted a hard work ethic. That is typical hate mentality. Hate or despise those who have what you want but do not have. All the while forgetting that everyone in their family history started out poor at some point and had to work to build their wealth.

El Guapo on October 24, 2007 at 11:41 PM

We do need something bigger and better then ourselves to believe in, its food for the soul.

But if you, you know, are Christian or Jewish, your just an idiot. That’s not food for the soul that’s a racist, sexist, homophobic belief that inspires nazis. Wiccan is much better :-p

AZCON on October 24, 2007 at 11:52 PM

Yes, dear Kini. Thank you for your concern and your wishes from the other thread. Anything can happen still but it’s much worse for so many others. One very good first account item I can report is that some of my peers from the office in Carlsbad volunteered to help at the shelters and were turned away because so many other had saturated the system. They are now on a waiting list to be called later, if help is needed.

OT – it’s not witchcraft but a fact that nice people like you exist and are here on HA – how’s that for a good comeback? Best wishes to you, your lady and a good petting for the animals.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s secret MySpace entry:
*
Hi there fellow Islamic bloggers. My name is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and I am the great and fearless President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and soon to be the defacto President of Iraq too!

I was was born one of seven children to a humble blacksmith and when I was a child growing up I worked on a farm to earn extra money for my poor father and I got to know a lot of the farm animals very well. I was a real nature boy back then. I was a real animal lover. My favorites were the goats of course. I still have such fond memories of my boyhood.

Later I excelled as a student, earning my master’s degree and a Ph.D in civil engineering. I have only three wifes, but as the leader of such a great Islamic country and soon to be the dominate power in the Middle East I feel that it is time for me to take my fourth wife. If any nice Islamic ladies are reading this you should email me some time soon. You must be between the ages of 12 and 28 years old. If
you are under 12 that would be alright too but you must have a note from a male relative of course.

In addition to my important duties as the Great President of the Islamic Republic of Iran I am now working on my post graduate science project, which when completed in a very few years, I will test on Evil Israel and the Great Satin America.

Who I would like to meet … …
In addition to my fourth wife, and remember if you are under 12 years old, you must have a note from a male
relative, I would like to meet other dedicated members of the Great Religion of Slaughter Peace, Islam of course. We can all get together after work and spend time reading inspiring passages from the Koran and comparing notes on our mutual love of farm
animals. We can also go over a list of priority test sites for my developing science project. It will be a blast! It will make much bigger holes than the one in New York that they did not let me visit!!!

MB4 on October 25, 2007 at 12:25 AM

You really do have a lot of faith.

MB4

I just know what science cannot yet prove. Something or someone out there started this whole thing, and he/it in turn came from someone or something else, and so on, and so on. Because scientifically/theoretically speaking, nothing can never spawn something on its own. But eventually, you have to come to the true beginning. Maybe our universe is nothing than some kid’s science project shoved in a dark closet and forgotten about after his B+. Either way, there is still something or someone out there that started it all.

And we made that one ourselves, through science. Not mysticism.
