DREAM Act: “Too close to call”

Here’s a DREAM Act report from Lou Dobbs’ show last night:

The Senate cloture vote will take place sometime this morning. I’m liveblogging over at home base.

Update (AP): What kind of numbers are we talking about here? 2 million people amnestied, potentially:

But even their own think tank disagrees — the Migration Policy Institute has estimated that 360,000 illegals would get amnesty right away, with another 715,000 benefiting in the future, for a total of over 1 million amnestied. Using a different data source, we looked at the same question and estimated that the total number of potential beneficiaries of the amnesty is 2.1 million.

Follow the link and note his point about the fraud potential here, too. Kaus puts it well:

Make-It-Across-the-Border-and-Your-Kids-Get-Green-Cards-Act … sorry, the “DREAM Act”: It appears to be headed for a vote next week. … Mark Krikorian has more. … To reiterate: The problem with this bill is not just that it’s apparently been drafted as a stealth mechanism to allow lots of illegal immigrants to claim they qualify and thereby achieve legal status, although it has. Even were it restricted to its core purpose–compassionate treatment for eager students brought into the country by their parents when they were young–it would inherently create an incentive for further illegal border crossing (namely by telling potential illegals to bring their kids across the border when they are young). … Now that the government is finally (seemingly, at least temporarily) trying to remove the “jobs magnet” for continuing illegal immigration, this is not the time to activate an alternative “kids magnet.”

Update: The one taste of sweetness in this bitter pill is that immigration is one of the few issues that point in the GOP’s favor right now among the public. If the Democrats are stupid enough to pass this, it could give conservatives some much-needed leverage next year.

First In? Here we go again. And the meaning of NO is NO!

Absolutely absurd…!

Make exceptions for the exceptional, but make enforcing the laws the USUAL. Dammit…!

In time, this will fail and the Dems will attack talk radio again.

I called Landrieu’s office and spoke to an aide. He said he does not know how she will vote, that she never discloses this before a vote. He then went on to say she usually votes against this type of Bill. Of course, I believed every word. I asked him to put me on the list opposing the “Dream Act”

Amnesty is going to pass. Washington has made up its mind. This will keep being reintroduced until it passes.

Farmer_Joe on October 24, 2007 at 10:23 AM

I think the two Dem Senators from New Jersey need to be reminded that 3 US citizen college students were killed by illegal aliens who are vicious gang members and may be elegible to be rewarded with this Dream Act.

Tanc is after Dick Durban

Lawmaker wanted raid of news conference Tue Oct 23, 6:38 PM ET

WASHINGTON – A Republican presidential candidate on Tuesday called for a federal immigration raid at a meeting in the U.S. Capitol hosted by the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat.

No one from Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed up despite GOP Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado’s call, Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin of Illinois said afterward.

“His hatred for people who are immigrants is boundless,” Durbin said.

Tancredo issued a news release saying he had called federal immigration officials to warn them that illegal immigrants might show up at Durbin’s meeting promoting the DREAM Act.

And while ‘we the people’ continue to accept the ridiculous proposition that these people are our ‘leaders’, we will continue to deservedly get the royal shaft.

I’m just speechless on this, I can’t believe they are doing this again. Senators… the People are watching what you do today and they will remember it on election day.

Maxx on October 24, 2007 at 10:31 AM

How will McCain vote?

JiangxiDad on October 24, 2007 at 10:46 AM

The way this bill has been bounced around in Congress; the Mexican government ( Or at least some of their citizens ) have bought off some of its’ members. Mexico has not taken care of its own country. Look at it’s economical system. Educational system leaves much to be desired. So sad. In essenses; the old Spanish Land Grant System is still lives in Mexico. The ‘haves’ continue to have and the ‘have nots’ continue to have not.

oldelpasoan on October 24, 2007 at 10:55 AM

These idiot politicians should worry about securing and protecting this nation and forget about pandering to the hordes of illegal trespassers. If they thwart the will of the people for too long they will soon lose their coveted places at the public feeding trough and be forced to seek gainful employment.

rplat on October 24, 2007 at 10:56 AM

Hutchinson’s lines have been busy all morning. I haven’t been able to get through. I sent an email, though. I certainly am glad that Cornyn will be voting against cloture.

I’m just speechless on this, I can’t believe they are doing this again. Senators… the People are watching what you do today and they will remember it on election day.

Maxx on October 24, 2007 at 10:31 AM

I don’t think people will remember. Stuff like this tends to get flushed down the memory hole.

pullingmyhairout on October 24, 2007 at 10:57 AM

They just don’t give up, do they?

Bad Candy on October 24, 2007 at 10:58 AM

I sent a fax to McCain (not that he’ll ever see it):

Today is the day we shall see if you, presidential candidate John McCain, truly have “learned your lesson” as you have been recently proclaiming.

VOTE NO ON THE DREAM ACT -S.2205, CLOTURE.

stenwin77 on October 24, 2007 at 11:00 AM

Since Hutchinson announced she won’t run again, I’ll bet you that she votes for it. At this point, she doesn’t have anything to lose.

pullingmyhairout on October 24, 2007 at 11:03 AM

I’m curious to know who they are going to pick up from the last round. McCain must have learned his lesson, so I’m guessing he’ll be a no this time.

Not much of a silver lining in this dark cloud, MM.

BTW, I’m a big fan (of small stature) of yours. You have a lot more class than “geraldo”. Keep up the great work.

Texas Nick 77 on October 24, 2007 at 11:19 AM

madmonkphotog,

They know all right. They just don’t care. Never make the mistake of thinking that just because they call themselves “Democrats” they actually believe in democracy and the democratic process.

The way that this seems to be going, the only lawmakers who will be out of a job will be those who don’t oppose this form of shamnesty.

Texas Nick 77 on October 24, 2007 at 11:23 AM

# Thus the total number of potential amnesty beneficiaries is 2.1 million (assuming no fraud). This does not include 1.4 million siblings and parents of qualifying illegals who may end up receiving a de facto amnesty.

# Prior legalization programs have been plagued by fraud. One-fourth (700,000) of those legalized in the 1986 amnesty are estimated to have done so fraudulently.

Exactly. Has anything run by the government not been plagued by fraud?

Katrina relief
Social Security
S-CHIP
Murtha’s earmarks
Rangel’s earmarks

The list is toooooooooooooo long………

The one taste of sweetness in this bitter pill is that immigration is one of the few issues that point in the GOP’s favor right now among the public.

Except that GOPers like Lindsey Graham may ruin this favor.

Bigfoot on October 24, 2007 at 11:44 AM

Harry Reid is now introducing the nightmare amnesty/reward bill.

If we can’t get 41 Senators to vote against cloture, I am going to scream. LOUDLY!

I have FAXed, emailed, called – I only wish 51% of the electorate was up to speed on this issue and participated as all of us do.

fred5678 on October 24, 2007 at 11:48 AM

Ok. Motion for cloture is now on the floor. Dingy Harry is currently blathering. How pathetic he is.

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 24, 2007 at 11:48 AM

Inhofe beating it right now.

Except that GOPers like Lindsey Graham may ruin this favor.

Bigfoot on October 24, 2007 at 11:44 AM

His office said they had no official position but believed he was voting against it. This was Tuesday.

Demint ofcourse is voting against it. I even told his office (Rick) that I felt stupid for calling to make sure.

I know that Turbin is pushing this Bill, but what Lobbying group is behind the push? Latino’s? Those BIG CORPORATE Farmers? Who is promising Turbin the BIG MONEY?

PappaMac on October 24, 2007 at 11:56 AM

Durbin calling Tommy T a bigot….

America is racist…blah, blah, blah

Dream act will get recruits for military…oookkkkk, and/or more people in college

We need “talent” from overseas

Wow, how boring

ugh! Turbin is making me nauseous!

Nyog_of_the_Bog on October 24, 2007 at 12:00 PM

Most Americans don’t know about this, it’s appears to me to be a stealth attempt by the left to garner the hispanic vote. Wait, just wait until the electorate wakes up and finds out what is happening, or has already happened.

Payback will be plentiful.

sunny on October 24, 2007 at 12:03 PM

And the hits just keep on coming! Get used to a different country, boys & girls. The U.S.A. will never be the same after bills(hits) like this. It’s a slow slide into the third world and worse – a much bigger separation of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. Democ-rats don’t care, and seem to want to, bring us down as a country. We’ve got to stop them next November – VOTE AGAINST THEM!

countywolf on October 24, 2007 at 12:07 PM

Vitter’s past heroics on this issue have played no small part in immunized him in Louisiana from his past brothel problems. As has been attributed to Lincoln about Grant: “I can’t spare this man. He fights!”

Fred: Democrats’ DREAM Act is a Nightmare

bnelson44 on October 24, 2007 at 12:14 PM

I hate Spector…If local and state gov want to legislate their own laws to help save themselves…Butt Out. The nerve of this government (some of them) to think they can control everyone’s community.

If states were allowed to settle this issue, the issue would be solved. Illegals would know where to go and where not to go. I’d be happy to deport to PA for ya.

Looks like cloture just failed. I think the vote was 52-44, they did not get the 60 votes needed to move the bill forward.

jaime on October 24, 2007 at 12:55 PM

Didnt the dems still need to over ride the veto in the house ?

William Amos on October 24, 2007 at 12:57 PM

Bad Candy on October 24, 2007 at 12:58 PM

Very, very cool. What’s the whining like?

Darksean on October 24, 2007 at 1:05 PM

FYI, the Wikipedia entry is biased pro-, and they seem to be looking for someone to provide balance and/or objectivity, so if anyone here cares enough to do so, that might be worthwhile.

calbear on October 24, 2007 at 1:06 PM

They didn’t take the bill through committee again, so they needed to get 60 votes on cloture to move it forward.

I wonder if the committee is full of anti-illegal immigration Senators and the Dems know it would never make it out of committee to the floor? It seems kind of stupid, if you have 52 votes, to bypass the committee.

Anyone know why they bypassed the committee for this bill?
