Breaking: The DREAM dies! Update: Roll added

posted at 1:02 pm on October 24, 2007 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

For now. Cloture fails, 52-44. Standby for the roll and reaction.

Update: I’m hoping to get some video up of Durbin but the Beauchamp news may have me sidetracked for awhile. Here’s the roll, though, as promised. Recall that the shamnesty cloture vote this summer failed with 53 votes, not 44, although it was more politically important for the participants to be seen on the right side in that one than it was here, which probably accounts for most of the difference.

Quick and easy scan of Democrats voting against: Baucus, Byrd, Conrad, Dorgan, Landrieu, Pryor, Tester, and good ol’ McCaskill, whose objections to amnesty evidently don’t end at labor concerns. Republicans voting for: Bennett, Coleman, Collins, our friend Larry Craig, Hagel, Hatch, Hutchison, Lott, Lugar, “Amnesty Mel” Martinez, Snowe, and Sam Brownback, who was free to show his true colors today sans 11th-hour switch.

Wow, I thought they were gonna sneak this one in.

Yes! There are at least 44 Senators who know better than to shoot themselves in the foot.

Bad news – it is not over, It never is with these weasels.

What’s Harry Reid going to say to the man-in-the-mirror tonight?

Any guesses?

Mcguyver on October 24, 2007 at 1:07 PM

We can enjoy this for now. But, if there is anything to be learned about the libs and dems, they don’t get it and they won’t stop. Until sensible immigration reform is passed, they will try to repackage amnesty again and again. After all, it’s for the (illegal immigrant) children…..

Meanwhile, Fred Thompson comes out against the DREAM amnesty.

It’s too bad he pretends to drive a red pick up truck and bobs his head when he talks. Otherwise, I’d really like to support him. /sarcasm.

Where was the Cape Cod Orca? He was registered on the Southwick vote as “Not Voting.” Is he in the Senate today? You would think he of all people would be lobbying/screaming/etc to get this one through.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 24, 2007 at 1:21 PM

Heads up, AP. Michelle should be in a good mood after a couple of hours with the cheap shamnesty victory wine.

Not entirely true, my friend. I’m in the middle of the fire zones and I managed to get VERY bent over Stark’s remarks….I managed 100% pissed-off-ed-ness over that….then I went back to fire-watching.

Kay Bailey just lost my one, lone, little vote. She’ll not miss it but she will the hundreds of people I intend to make it my personal vendetta to inform of her treason. It’s, I tell someone, they tell someone, and by the time she “finally” declares her candidacy for governor of the Great State of Texas there won’t be anyone at the polls voting for her. Word of mouth has put more than one restaurant out of business – should work against a turn coat senator as well. Dang, I’m flippin mad.

Anyone have a link to the actual vote?

Kay Bailey Hutchison lost another vote from me too for her future run for Governor of Texas. I knew she was more than squishy on immigration before, but she totally blew it today. Heaven knows we don’t need another “Bush Lite” governor.

McCain DOESN’T go on record.

Haahahahahaha.

JiangxiDad on October 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM

So it appears that the Dem’s strategy is to continue to bring this up and/or attach it to other legislation until they either 1) sneak it through, 2) exhaust the opposition, 3) embed it in some bill that 40 Senators can’t bring themselves to vote against or 4) failing any of the above, they whip up sympathetic constituencies (Latino, Asian, etc.) to a fever pitch to vote donk in 2008.

cool breeze on October 24, 2007 at 2:00 PM

fred5678 on October 24, 2007 at 1:06 PM

I agree wholeheartedly.

I have noticed other conservative websites around this time (as well as the June attempt at Sham-nesty) and they are busying writing posts, discussing abstract ideas like Social Security reform, school choice, etc.

But there comes a time when everyone needs to stop and just pick up the phone, and remind our elected officials of the Constitution.

I commend Hot Air for their strategy of “rallying the troops” and taking practical steps to defeat this monstrous bill.

I agree.

The word, “comprehensive” has been abused by both RHINOs and Democrats.

We already have laws against illegal imigration. We already have laws to build and fund the fence.

“Comprehensive” is just a code word for amnesty.

America may never ever in the future be invaded by a standing foreign army equipped with tanks, armored personnel carriers, etc.

But America is currently being invaded by tens of millions of people who are contributing, by their actions, to a culture of law-lessness and anarchy.

We as a country should never reward law-lessness with the gift of USA citizenship.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said the DREAM Act amounts to a ‘ratification of illegality’ and could provide an incentive for more illegal immigration. ”
Michelle Malkin website

Senator Jeff Sessions should run for President. He is a leader.

Everyone knows that amnesty is a big incentive for more and more illegal immigration. After all, there have been 7 amnesties given to illegal aliens since 1986. Why is Senator Sessions one of the few GOP senators courageous enough to point this documented fact out?

And I agree with others who have said this kind of thing will have an impact on her bid for TX governor. Both of my senators from Indiana favored this and voted for cloture???? I called those fools!

Aaaarrrghhh….

Start getting your resumes together, Hoosier Senators. You lost my vote.

I’m right there with ya, Black Adam. Bayh, I can understand… but Lugar? I’m about give him a stern rebuke and issue an important action alert to fellow hoosiers! :p

Pardon my ignorance of parliamentary procedure but I just spoke to Sen. Lott’s office to express my disappointment with his Yea vote on the Dream Act. She stated that he voted
for cloture not the Dream Act bill. Does this mean he voted to end the debate and move to vote on the actual bill in the future? Any help?
