Video: The very important, not-at-all gratuitous “hot Israel” controversy

posted at 6:52 pm on October 23, 2007 by Allahpundit

I followed this at the Corner last week with half interest, enough to know they were talking about Israeli women in bikinis but not enough to care what the political ramifications of that might be. Here’s the whole thing nutshelled by David Harsanyi. In essence, some guy thinks Israel pitching the lusciousness of its women as a reason to visit is further evidence that it should enjoy no divinely ordained status in the eyes of Christians. Michael Potemra and Ramesh Ponnuru at the Corner disagree and agree, respectively. One of the many virtues of atheism is that I don’t have to care in the slightest and can simply enjoy the ads for what they are: among the most scintillatingly compelling tourist pitches you’ll ever see. “Israel: You’ll Risk It For This.”

The first clip is Sky News’s report on the Israeli T&A PR offensive, the second is the infamous “Holy Land” ad (which wasn’t produced by the Israeli government and has been around for upwards of a year, I believe). The language is a tad garlicky so take care.

Why does some ugly women have to come along and try to castrate men?
Trying to make sense out of why beautiful, sexy women should not be used to promote something means that women has nothing to promote.

RedWinged Blackbird on October 23, 2007 at 7:02 PM

From what I’ve read so far, moreso those who don’t tend to view the state of Israel as fulfillment of prophecy, and latch onto this as proof. This could include conservative Christians, but as yet, I’ve only heard liberal ones and Catholics use this. I’m sure I’ll be proved wrong in the thread, though.

What the [blank] ever. The Christian guys I know have no problem appreciating pretty women–within limits, of course.

Man, that brings back some memories. I was fortunate enough to spend some time in Haifa during my time in the Corps. Beautiful women carrying automatic weapons.

Social policy aside, the young lady who appears in both clips is breathtaking. Language is inappropriate, but probably isn’t any worse than my typical HotAir comment on terrorists.

Jaibones on October 23, 2007 at 7:10 PM

That was awesome. I’d like to know what percentage of Israeli women actually look like that, but the fact that almost all of them have served in the military already makes me loosen my tie.

BTW, I’ve never heard any pastor–and I’ve listened to a lot of them–tell Christian women that they shouldn’t wear bikinis at the beach or by a swimming pool due to morality reasons. Now the question as to whether some of us should eschew wearing them for aesthetic reasons is another matter, but I’ve heard no pastor address that subject either. :-)

Interesting irony too. This comes out almost 180 degrees from the imagery of women in the ME – ie the veil. I think this is more than meets the eye, I think it is for a deeper culture statement.

I think Mr Potemra has a mistaken view of Israel’s current position vis-a-vis (well, la-de-freakin’-da) Christian doctrine. While their reconstitution as a nation was foretold in Scripture, there is no special spiritual status yet.

Honestly, this has got to be at the top of the contrived controversies. And what is it with the Brits pronouncing controversy con-traw-ver-see? Anyway, what I like about the Israeli babes is that they have a beautiful tomboy image to them. Most of them have served in the defense forces, so they know how to handle a machine gun. How hot is that?

There are lots of countries in the world you can visit and see lots of beautiful women… without worrying about being blown-up by an incoming missile. For Christians that know why it’s important to support Israel, this stupidity on the Israeli government’s part won’t make a difference. But they would do a lot more good for tourism by advertising the Holy Land aspect of the country.

Let’s see, smokin hot girls in bikinis versus burqas.
No wonder why the Arabs are so pissed off.

And no conversion required!!!

Kini on October 23, 2007 at 8:33 PM

Hey I don’t want to dampen the fun on this thread but the only way Israel can improve its image is by directly and forcefully confronting and dismantling the lies of Arab propaganda. No amount of Nobel prize winning scientists or hot Israeli beach girls will change the mind of anyone who views the Israeli position as fundamentally unjust.

The British Mandate for Palestine gives Israel the legal right to Gaza and the West Bank, a fact I stumbled on only very recently and almost by accident. Why can’t the Israel promote that? There are plenty of jihadis who would like to roger Israeli women and wouldn’t feel at all conflicted about it. In fact that seems to me a significant motivation for the “liberation” of the country by sexually frustrated Palestinian men.

That said I enjoyed these ads on a uh personal level.

I’ve been trying to get people to go to Israel ever since I went. It’s scary, when you see the garbage that the media present (and believe it). It’s a fun, fun place and much like L.A. or any other place, just learn the places to avoid (hello, Palestinian controlled areas) and it’s all good.

Speaking of iphone, AP has been carefully avoiding posting the latest iphone story – that 18% of all iphones sold have not been activated – presumably because of the proprietary and lousy AT&T service agreement. 250,000 people bought the damn gadgets without thinking about that.

I see where Mark Shea (the man who first criticized the ads) and Ramesh are coming from. I think there is a tendency among certain conservatives to take Israel’s side no matter what. I think this is foolish. Now obviously I’m going to give Israel the benefit of the doubt, but of course that doesn’t mean Israel has carte blanche to do whatever it wants. I think Christians (mostly Evangelicals) who think that Israel is the fufillment of some sort of Biblical prophecy are bat-$hit crazy. Israel is not free to do whatever it wants without criticism (in this case create some moderately impious ads–although it wasn’t the gov’t per se). If this ad came from some Leftist firm or was any way associated with liberals, my suspicion is that many of you would be singing quite different tunes. It should also be noted that many people in Israel have criticized the add as being offensive to women.

Uhhh…for those brothers who insist they can scoop fire into their laps and not get burned, may I remind you of the “I made a vow with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl” bit embedded in the OT?

Nope, didn’t watch the video, lest you snark.

Also also, Evangelicals are not so hot for Israel simply because of some quaint uninformed notions about them being the chosen nation. It’s more a reaction to the realities of the prophesies in Revelation: whether or not it’s the current political incarnation of Israel, there will come a war at some point in which Israel stands surrounded by her enemies, and wins.

We’d rather choose the winning side, given the hat tip on the outcome.

WillBarrett on October 23, 2007 at 9:25 PM

RIIGGHHTT. Because Israel is constantly NOT being criticized for being too “mean” to her neighbours. Or for giving away Gaza for no reason. Or for blowing up the Hezb’allah parts of Lebanon. Or for assassinating Rantisi. Or for the fake genocide in Jenin. Or for allegedly killing Al-Dura or for blowing up some beach in Gaza (even though they did neither). And ‘conservatives’ are constantly just saying, “Oh, well, they are allowed to do whatever they want, they are Jews after all.” Now, I have got to say that mayhaps Israel does get some lattitude from certain people, but after so many years of being portrayed as heartless bastards by the media, perhaps it’s time that someone be nice to them. Israel certainly has never had “carte blanche”, that’s why every little thing gets investigated there – from massacres that never happened, to alleged prejudice against anyone. Or photos from Lebanon of Beirut being blown to shreds – oh wait, those were fake.
And I didn’t know I was bat$hit crazy, I just thought I was eccentric. Good to know, good to know. For the record I support Israel because it’s the right thing to do and because I’ve figured all that out, by, oh, I don’t know, thinking for myself.

In conclusion, I think this ad is funny. I’m a woman. I’m not offended. I think it’s cute. The Israeli government is slowly realizing that their citizens are GORGEOUS and are using that to attract the younger or the not religious to their country. And to that I say, Mazel Tov. Gotta use what you got. Doesn’t Texas use the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to attract tourists? Or Hooters restaurants? Or Florida with spring break? I don’t hear anyone complaining about those. Why shouldn’t Israel use what they got?

“A small minority of Christian extremists.” — RedWinged Blackbird on October 23, 2007 at 7:02 PM

Christian-bashing is the last ditch effort of the lost and profane. Tiresome, give it a rest already.

I’d venture to guess that ALL Christians in your view and those who share it are “extremists.”

I didn’t view the videos, since the introduction seems to well suggest it’s quasi-porn (that is, women mostly naked cavorting for sensual appeal to sell some product), but, how Christians can be denigrated because they may disagree with this is beyond me.

There’s nothing wrong with respecting chastity and not being promiscuous. A woman cavorting nearly nude isn’t likely to be discouraging sexual overtures, in other words, and most adults can well understand that. Or a male, for that matter, depending on the target audience.

It’s a case of gratuitous advertising. And Israel is not (at all) immune from the sexual predatory appeal factor both among Israelis and Jews elsewhere. I’m not sure I find it very appealing nor inducement to go visit.

I had the most amazing two weeks of my life in Israel…it was definitely worth saving up for an entire year! I swam in the Mediterranean, the Dead Sea, the Galilee, snorkeled in the Red Sea… I mean…the country is seriously sooo tiny but it has a lot of character. One second you’re in a modern trendy city like Tel Aviv, then you’re in the hills of the ancient Jerusalem, then you’re in the desert (which is actually really beautiful), then you’re in a tropical climate like in the Galilee…It’s pretty much fantastic.

emmaline1138 on October 24, 2007 at 5:24 AM

Why is it immoral for woman to were skimpy bathing suits? Wasn’t God somewhat upset that Adam and Eve covered themselves? Did he then say something along the lines like, “you covered yourself so from this point on I’ll be offended if you don’t”?

For another, less cheezy portrait of the Girls of the IDF, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMe1HfPNq7Y (which was briefly displayed in the first video).

My favorite photo is the last one at 3 min 22 sec into the video. It’s also the very last that thing a Hezbollah fighter will see if he attracts her attention.

Lebanon was like that…, before the USA pulled out and allowed the 80% Christian majority to be ran off and replaced by the present 80% Muslim majority, thanks to the Syrian-backed and Iranian-packed HezbuAllah… Beirut used to be like Haifa, but those days are gone forever.

It’s so nice to see our guys being allowed to finish a job. I envy those guys who got to serve in the Afghan AND Iraqi theaters… I’ll burst with joy when they get to add Iran to their ribbon bars and fight alongside those Partisans who are just dying to join our guys against the mulahs and their thug gangs operating in the hoods of Persia.

By freedom, I mean “skimpy bikinis and cleavage”.

Bar Rafaeli, the SI swimsuit rookie of the year and first rookie to make the cover of the SI swimsuit issue, is from Tel Aviv. And she is not even the prettiest lady you will see on the beaches of Tel Aviv. Halle is hot enough but she is not in the same league as Bar. Bar is in Giselle Bunchen territory. The Arabs and their left wing sympathizers can take credit for such beauties as Suha Arafat, Hannah Ashrawi and Rose O’Donnell. We have Bar and Giselle.

Larraby on October 24, 2007 at 10:35 AM

Looks like I’m pretty much alone in these comments, but anyway, here goes:

This topic is a lot heavier than the comments would suggest. You may have thought that the women were “dang soooper HAWT”, but there are people who find this kind of thing short-sighted and infantile. I know, “lighten up, Dave!“. Well, this is a serious topic. Firstly, this whole “OMG, XYZ country’s women are the HOTTEST EVAR” thing is so incredibly idiotic. Let me assure you, I have visited a great many countries, and there are smokin’ hot women everywhere. Secondly, this sex-based advertising has a short shelf life, and will backfire big time. It is important that people know that the ad posted here (the particularly bawdy and vulgar one) was NOT made by the Israeli government.

I know, I know… lighten up. Well, an important religious concept is that of “kadosh”, being separate from animals. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach has written a lot in this vein about how to increase the potency of sexuality.

dave_lantos on October 24, 2007 at 11:26 AM

I know, I know… lighten up. Well, an important religious concept is that of “kadosh”, being separate from animals. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach has written a lot in this vein about how to increase the potency of sexuality.

So all our civilizations, technologies and societies. Taking care of the sick, the injured and the oppressed. Not relieving ourselves in public or mating with anything, alive, dead, animate or inanimate counts for naught. What really distinguishes us from animals is killing them, removing the skin from their dead bodies and wearing it. That makes us human. Cool.

Be thankful the men are straight. I bet everyone of the single ones here would not be looking to have a fling, but would be happily married to them.

What is the one girl doing with her boots in the air and her rifle in one hand? Qualifying marksmanship while doing one-handed cart-wheels?

Didn’t care for the language, but yes, the girls are hot.
Whether one believes that the Jews are God’s Chosen People or not, the fact that that is the only country in the ME wear hot babes are allowed to wear bikinis instead of being forced to hide in burqas is reason enough to support Israel.

On another note: Neitzsche said “That which does not kill you makes you stronger.” So, given all that the Jews and especially Israeli Jews have been through, why aren’t they all born with red and yellow “S”‘s tattooed to their chests?
