God Bless his family and friends. Rest in peace, Lt. Murphy, an American hero.

Thanks for posting this, AP. Busy all afternoon and unfortunately could not see it live.

The contrast between this man and the Hollywood movie poseurs is stunning. Reality and truth vs fantasyland fiction. Grotesque.

I’d highly recommend Marcus Luttrell’s book, Lone Survivor, which describes the mission in which Lt. Murphy gave his life in the defense of his country.
Rest in Peace, Lieutenant. America is in your debt.

You guys are just being jingoistic. The real Patriots are those dissenting and protesting. With puppets and paper mache. And Code Pink. And… And…
Man, I don’t know how the leftards do it. It violates the laws of physics that their heads don’t implode from the cognitive dissonance.
You can tell a lot about people by whom they venerate. Our “friends” on the left are, um, lacking.
trubble on October 22, 2007 at 3:52 PM
Thank you doesn’t seem enough. I am truely grateful. Godspeed, Lt. Murphy.

Two contrasting articles from the New York Times.
Lt. Michael P. Murphy:
A Protector as a Child, Honored as a Hero
lt. Cmdr. Matthew Diaz:
Naming Names at Gitmo
BohicaTwentyTwo on October 22, 2007 at 3:55 PM
Want to know what’s ironic? A movie based on the events that lead to Lt. Murphy’s death would be a blockbuster.
But Hollywood would never give it the time of day….

On the right, we see this man as a hero. On the left, they see Jake Gyllanhaal as a hero. The libs live in a fantasy world, protected by REAL men like Micheal Murphy, yet they despise his kind as warmongers.
Unamused, right on my friend, Lone Survivor would be a HUGE hit. And if the lefty hollyweird producers would READ it, they could see how not ALL muslims are evil, the ones who helped Luttrell were certainly NOT terrorists, right? That way they could say they made a movie about good muslims AND brave American SEaLs, everybody wins.

Wow.

Great piece about a true American hero. May he rest in peace. He is a true inspiration to all. Finally, George does something truly worthwhile for the nation.
countywolf on October 22, 2007 at 4:16 PM
What a pity it is to lose such a fine man to such a pack of rabid dogs. God Speed Mr. Murphy.
On the film idea, Bryan Preston, you should take this on.
In your spare time, of course. wink. wink. But it would be an outstanding project.

Blessed be his memory. And may his memory be eternal.

Has the New York Times acknowledged Murphy yet?
georgej on October 22, 2007 at 4:19 PM
AMERICAN HERO.
This family embodies what we should hold dear and celebrate in this country… not the tabloid-infested crap so many people dine on these days.
God Bless Mikey and his family.
D2Boston on October 22, 2007 at 4:19 PM
D2, good point, and Luttrell’s family also embodies what we should hold dear. His friends and relatives and people he didn’t even know spent several days at his parents’ house waiting for news about Marcus. His twin brother insisted he was still alive. Great book.

Freedom breeds men like Lt. Michael Murphy, with character and bravery. I hope we’ve enough men and women like him to save this country and the world.

OT: I just found out my friend got hit by an IED in Iraq. He’s enlisted Army, and had only been in theater about a few weeks. The only thing the Army has said is that he has severe lacerations. If you all could pray for him and his wife, I would greatly appreciate it.

I can’t imagine the emotions that are going to plague Luttrell for the rest of his life, being the only survivor out of 20. Ditto Tony and unamused, Lone Survivor would make an incredible film.
I have to give CNN some credit for their coverage of this today. I switched over once this morning and once just now and they were running this story each time. It’s a shame so many other news outfits didn’t see this as newsworthy.

Consider it done, PRCal. Godspeed your friend safely home.
For Lt. Murphy, what can you say? Sometimes words just can’t convey the feeling of sadness for his death and gratitude and deep appreciation for men like him.

Some days, especially when I’m reading stories about leftists throwing bricks at people, or opposing the notion of islamo-fascism as “racist”, the MSM reporting as fact things that I know aren’t true, or yet another “isolated incident” of homicide that the authorities are just SURE has nothing to do with the religion of the killer…. I get depressed.
Hell, I’ve had to just flat stop reading sites like LGF for a week or two at a time, because there’s there’s too much negative news (not that I’m blaming Charles; he’s just reporting the facts, and the facts are pretty damned negative most of the time).
Then a story like this comes along, and I know that as long as this country is capable of producing men like Lt. Murphy, no one can defeat us.
The Monster on October 22, 2007 at 8:00 PM
Saw that. I know there are going to be, and have likely already been, people that write his sacrifice off as an attempt at “self preservation” … but this goes worlds beyond it. Look up the meaning of the word brave in the dictionary and you’ll find Murphy’s picture.
He is a hero who I have no doubt is with God in Heaven now.

Thanks AP. I needed to see that.
kahall on October 22, 2007 at 9:27 PM
My friend’s ok! My other friend spoke to him earlier. I guess the IED blew up slightly to the side of their humvee, rolling it and knocking them unconscious. When they came to, they were under attack by Iraqis. They returned fire, the Iraqis ran away, and no one got shot. My friend just has a bump on his head. The Army was being very vague when they contacted his wife earlier.
PRCalDude on October 22, 2007 at 9:46 PM
As I understand the situation, the true tragedy here is that those SEALs made a decision based on their fear that the media and the hardcore leftists in the Senate would prosecute them for war crimes if they protected their mission by the killing of those herders who accidentally discovered them.
Our misguided Democrat Party and others of their political ilk, including the Drive by Media must be made to understand the difference between actual war crimes like murder, and when our guys and girls must kill in order to accomplish their mission and to defend our nation.
R.I.P., Lt. Murphy.
As a member of the USAF Auxiliary, in MY household, we salute you.

Lt Murphy’s story should be told by someone who doesn’t need to make millions of dollars. A simple direct story of an American hero. No reason to add to the story. No CG, no contrived love triangle. No BS.
God speed to Lt. Michael Murphy and blessings of thoughts of happy memories for his family.

Eternal Father, Strong to save….
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who biddest the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!
O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy Word,
Who walked on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

I heard that from Marcus Luttrell himself in an interview. My copy of his book is on the way…This should be the scandal of the decade.

After watching this again, I noticed a lot of cameras clicking as Dubya handed over the plaque. I fully expect to see this on the front page of the NYT tomorrow, above the fold.

Professor Blather on October 23, 2007 at 12:20 PM
We don’t deserve men as dedicated and brave as Lt. Murphy.
I finished Lone Survivor a couple of weeks ago. It’s truly a must read.
Though this mission lost 20 great men, there is no reason to believe our leaders learned the lessons that should have been learned. We continue to fight a political war. Lt. Murphy and his men were completely aware of the idiotic limitations that had been imposed but still had the confidence that they would perservere. Fear of being accused of war crimes is causing our leadership — the POTUS and our generals on down — to subject our troops to unreasonable risks while giving the enemy a false sense of their ability. By this, I mean that were we to allow our men to use the full extent of their fighting skill and ability the enemy would not stand a chance.
The encounter with the “goatherders” was not unfortunate; it was inevitable. Those mountains are a war zone. We have all the evidence we could need that those living there are either the enemy or enemy smpathizers. When the encounters allow capture and release when danger has passed, fine. However, in circumstances such as those encountered by Lt. Murphy and his 3 teammembers, there would be no practical means of capture. Elimination of the risk must be the standing order in that situation or the mission should be no-go. For me, the two missing buildings in the New York landscape dictate the former.
