Monday Night Football open thread: Colts at Jax

posted at 8:15 pm on October 22, 2007 by Bryan

If these teams are as good as their records, and at least the Colts probably are, then this game ought to be a great one. Peyton Manning & co take on the under-hyped 4-1 Jacksonville Jaguars. Says Yahoo:

The Jacksonville Jaguars may be the NFL’s best team that no one is talking about. Everyone will be if they win this week.

A four-game winning streak has failed to get the Jaguars mentioned among the league’s elite teams, but a victory over the unbeaten defending Super Bowl champions should do the trick. That’s the opportunity presented to the Jaguars, and it comes in front of a nationally televised audience, when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Monday night.

“We’ve been flying under the radar,” Jaguars quarterback David Garrard said. “Now we want a little bit of that national spotlight.”

This matchup is far tougher than anything Jacksonville (4-1) has faced – none of its victories have been against teams with winning records – and the Colts (5-0) are considered to be battling New England for the title as the NFL’s best team. The Jaguars might have to be put in that class Monday if they win to move into a tie with Indianapolis for the AFC South lead.

Like Michael Vick, I have no dog in this fight so I guess I’m hoping for a good game more than anything else. Kickoff is at 8:30 Eastern on ESPN. Have at it, Hot Air heads.

what’s the over under on brady’s TD count this year? I think he’s on a pace of 61 right?

lorien1973 on October 22, 2007 at 8:17 PM

Remember the good old days when there was a fine AFC team in Florida, but it played 300 miles SOUTH of Jacksonville?

radjah shelduck on October 22, 2007 at 8:25 PM

I want the Colts to win for two reasons: So that people can stop talking about how “no one is better than Tom Brady, no one, NO one, NO ONE!!” And, a loss for the Jags will improve the Texan’s record (just a wee bit) for the AFC South. I saw a sports guy who was comparing Tom Brady’s TDs to Mannings TDs for the year, showing how much more Brady had than Manning. ‘Course, he left out the fact that the Colts didn’t play last week, and he hadn’t played yet this week. Tom Brady had two weeks of play on Manning and the Press was all like, Brady this and Brady that, Brady, Brady Brady. I can’t stand the Pats can ya tell?

Indy representin’!!! Yeah, baby.

Who do you think Peyton Manning will make sit in the Portalet first?

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 22, 2007 at 8:26 PM

I think you are right, the NFL should take away a draft pick from the Raiders for screwing the rest of the league by trading Moss for basically nothing, to the Patriots of all teams.

Peyton is the MANning. Go Colts!

They’re not my favorite, but I can stand them. Now Chris Berman is another topic. He makes my skin crawl when I listen to him, especially his “whoop” and his references to rock music. He’s an a$$clown who is all “big noise” and no substance. I am rooting against the Eagles this year, only because Berman picked them to be in the SuperBowl. I think he was “juuuust a bit outsice on that one.”

Oh yeah, go Colts.

No, Olberdouche is on NBC’s broadcast, isn’t he? I always turn it off, so I can’t remember.

Olberman was on Sportscenter for years, he was great there. THEN, he left and his tin foil hat started to show.

Gatordoug on October 22, 2007 at 9:12 PM

Go Colts! I have been a Peyton Manning fan ever since he left the field at Commonwealth Stadium(after royally thumping my Kentucky Wildcats) on the last game of his Junior season with Tennessee. A newsie caught him and asked if he would enter the NFL draft. He told them that he went to Tennessee for an education and he would finish that before moving on. The man has CLASS and continues his first rate gentleman behavior to this very day.

Archie must just bust his buttons every time he witnesses his boys play.

He serves no purpose on there. It is frankly pretty stupid for NBC to put the guy on there at all, considering how many Conservatives are watching football.

Gatordoug on October 22, 2007 at 9:12 PM

I don’t think it works that way, G-Doug. Olberdouche has gone back and erased any record of a time when he could be considered other than a douche. If you were to go watch film of The Douche is his halcyon days at ESPN now — you would see only his doucheness, and no evidence of talent or intelligence would appear to you.

It’s weird that way.

Peyton Manning got his Superbowl Ring last year.

This, thankfully, has stopped the incessant “Peyton Manning is the Best Quarterback who never won a Super Bowl” talk from all the sports talking heads.

Now, since Peyton got his ring, he and the sports talking heads have no right to complain when Brady and the Patriots walk all over him this season.

BKennedy on October 22, 2007 at 10:38 PM

The Jags could have beaten Manning… they just needed to dress out as the FL Gators

G-doug,
Too bad the Bears lost the SB last year… I would have died laughing thinking about Manning 0-5 against UF while at UT and then losing to a UF QB in the SB. Oh well, I guess that college curse stuff can only go so far.

Weight of Glory,

Your Houston Texans are a lot better than their record suggests.

They have an up-and-coming quarterback. They are capable of putting up 29 points in a single quarter, like they did against Tennessee last week.

I just got off the phone with my dad. We both agreed that the AFC South is the toughest division. All the teams are playoff-caliber teams.

If Houston was in a different division, they would be an easy pick to make the playoffs.

Bears 268, Colts and Jags -12

Jaibones on October 22, 2007 at 8:58 PM

Jailbones,

Lovie Smith needs to play Devon Hester MORE on offense, instead of only using him on special teams.

ColtsFan on October 23, 2007 at 1:03 AM

The Jags are extremely well-coached.

Jack Del Rio is a passionate coach, who is intense, and is a great motivator. He wants to win, and he wants to win badly. He is great at creating complex defensive schemes against the Colts.

Jacksonville is not going away at all. They will continue
to remain one of the top 5-6 teams in the NFL. Their defense is suffocating, and very stingy.

Great game.

I love the Colts!!

ColtsFan on October 23, 2007 at 1:14 AM

I can’t imagine why ESPN picked Kornheiser over Wilbon. Wrong choice. But not as bad as NBC using Olbermook.

jaime on October 23, 2007 at 8:09 AM

ColtsFan on October 23, 2007 at 1:03 AM

You’re right, and he has spent the whole year trying to work him into the offense. You might (or not) have noticed that Hester caught the 81 yard touchdown pass to tie the game against Minnesota in the last minute two weeks ago, and he caught a 15 yarder in the winning 97 yard drive Sunday against Philly.

Also, Philly refused to kick or punt anywhere near him, and pooch-kicked to the 35 or 40 all day, giving the Bears an estimated additional 105 yards of field position. But he didn’t score, so I guess it worked.

Jaibones on October 23, 2007 at 9:54 AM

Also, sportswriters in Chicago are addressing the situation carefully, hinting of late that Hester’s ability to absorb the intricacies of the offensive scheme seem … limited.

On Sunday we blew a timeout because he lined up on the wrong end, and Muhammed couldn’t seem to convince him to go to the other side…
