Could Spitzer sink the unstoppable Democrats?

posted at 3:55 pm on October 22, 2007 by Bryan

I’m not going to come up with a bunch of contrived lines leading to a lame Titanic analogy, but here’s the iceberg: Elliot Spitzer’s support for drivers licenses for illegals. It’s illegal, it’s bad policy and it’s bad politics — Spitzer hits the trifecta! That said, I think the NY Post paints the problem that NY Gov Elliot Spitzer’s licence-for-illegal aliens plan has created for Democrats as probably larger than it is (my own disgust with Republicans who advocate similar things probably balancing my thinking here), but then again they may be on to something. I certainly hope they are.

A half-dozen senior Democrats told The Post that Spitzer’s licensing plan is producing what one called “a mass exodus” away from the party’s candidates that may lead to unexpected losses in November’s local elections.

They are also warning that growing voter unhappiness with Spitzer on the licensing and other issues – illustrated in several recent polls – could carry into next year and end the Democrats’ hope of winning control of the GOP-dominated state Senate.

“The driver’s-license issue is a killer for us in the suburbs,” a senior party strategist said.

They go on to say that Hillary herself may be forced to reject Spitzer’s plan, but I think they’re underestimating the Glacier’s ability to avoid this particular iceberg. She has managed to build a New England Patriot-sized lead in the anti-war party without apologizing for voting in favor of the Iraq war, after all, and she’s built that lead over at least one charismatic opponent without having any evident charisma of her own . Among the Democrats who have invested the past umpteen years defending all things Clinton, she could probably confess to eating live children and have an army of James Carvilles out defending her within a nanosecond. They won’t hold her to account for something the NY governor did. The press won’t make her answer for it in the general election, either. They won’t even make her answer for her own actions.

But this issue could do unto Spitzer what it helped do unto Gray Davis. The Republicans just need to hold fast and don’t throw the man a life saver.

It’s New York State. What lifesaver do you think the NYS State Republican Committee actually has?

The most visible state Republican is Joe Bruno (late of Spitzer’s investigation into helicopter rides on the state dime).

The party in NY is broken, and that’s how Pataki left it.

Regardless of which candidate it helps or hurts (I don’t live in NY thus and am not terribly concerned on who they elect governor), it’s good to see that significant percentages of Dems and Republicans are on the right side of this.

How Hillary will try to weasel out of taking a stand on immigration I don’t yet know. It’s no surprise that her website (yes, I went there, and yes, there’s a shower in my near future) doesn’t include a stance on immigration issues.

Did I feel the earth move? Was it an earthquake or possibly New Yawkers coming to their senses? I wonder who lives in the suburbs there that doesn’t like this real lame, stupid, illegal idea? Is this the begining of the end of ‘giving away the country to the illegals’? What great news Bryan! Excellent piece as always!

Don’t hold your breath. I live near Buffalo. The story is similar in most areas upstate. Here’s the situation: The egregiously high taxes have driven out the public sector. Buffalo is about half the size it was 50 years ago. The City and County gov’ts are, for the most part, staffed as if they still had that population. Local gov’t is a HUGE employer around here, and political patronage is rampant. The Dems have nothing to fear.

Spitzer could burn the American flag while wiping his backside with a Buffalo Bills’ flag on the 6 o’clock news (y’know, the one the old folks watch) and the Republicans would be to blame.

Titanic? Iceberg? Trifecta? These mixed metaphors have me baffled!

Here’s the problem facing us in 2008: we (bloggers and blog readers) are the only ones who care about things like this, or Hillary’s fundraising hanky-panky, or [insert pet peeve here].

Here’s hoping this story doesn’t get much play and the Dems don’t decide to react until late Nov 2008.

But didn’t she pick up charisma every time she had sex with Bill? Didn’t that transfer some from him to her? Oh that’s right, that’s not what’s transfered and a few dozen times over the decades and maybe once in the last ten years wouldn’t have transfered much anyway, so never mind.

Speaking of Titanic, imagine if you will Bill and Hill on that ship on that night. What says you to the chances that not only would Hillary rush to the lifeboats, but Bill, too? They would be the first off that sinking ship. I can’t see Bill going down with any ship. And Hillary? Their ethics, and character flaws would have it no other way. They are survive-at-any-cost people. Hillary would give an impromptu stump speach assailing the rich and then avail herself of the first lifeboat. Anchors Aweigh!

“The driver’s-license issue is a killer for us in the suburbs,” a senior party strategist said.

It’s too bad the suburbs won’t have much of an affect on the national race. It takes a lot of suburbs to make up for the big city votes.

The Dems have a strangelhold on NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, etc… and all those wonderful deceased voters, illegal voters, multiple voters, “undocumented voters”…

reaganaut on October 22, 2007 at 4:19 PM

Hillary [regarding Bill]: Do you know he only makes love to me 12 times a year?
Don Diego [acting as Hillary's therapist]: Well, once a month is not that bad.
Hillary: No, he makes love to me 12 times in one night and then, zip, nothing!

Yup…which is why the Dembots oppose any laws requiring positive ID at polling places.

He becomes the poster boy for Democrats supporting illegals. “Supporting illegal aliens is what Democrats do, that is who they are.” That should be part of every race nationwide. Democrats will do anything not to be tarred as the party of illegal aliens. So drive a wedge between their pro-illegal alien base and their pro-American base. politics. Force the issue at the national level. No Democrat will take the chance on seeming pro-illegal. No matter who gets elected Americans win.

Unfortunately, given the state of the GOP in the last couple years, that means you can pretty much count on the Republicans doing something to throw the man a life saver.

Theworldisnotenough on October 22, 2007 at 4:33 PM

I wouldn’t be too sure about that. There are enough Republicans who don’t seem to care.

flipflop on October 22, 2007 at 4:38 PM

there is no doubt that this bullsh!t hurts the democratic party in NY. NYC/Albany/Buffalo may be heavy democrat…but even NYC’s closest suburb (my home town…yonkers NY) is SUPER REPUBLICAN. all points north?? republican domination. wat little dem votes they could get there are put in definite jeopardy by this insane idea.

legal immigrants get SS numbers. granted they come with a warning to employers stating they must check alien records before employing them…but they still get the number. this crap really is JUST for illegals…which is ridiculous.

You know, i thought a guy as nasty and egotistical as spitzer could shake things up in the most undemocratic, dysfunctional statehouse in the union…but no…hes just an @ss

Not “drift” Dusty. Fact! The election is in early November (first Tuesday?). No benefit to us after election. Better late October — too late for them to do anything effective about it.

:)

leepro on October 22, 2007 at 5:12 PM

I read that some in the NY Legistlature are trying to pass a law requiring that SS cards also be required to get a Drivers liecence in NY. Thye point out Elito Spitzer wants to accept foreign passports therefor it should be OK to use official government documents

She’ll do what Bill always did. Triangulate. She’ll denounce Spitzer’s plan while simultaneously proposing an ID plan of her own that makes it “fair” for everyone.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 22, 2007 at 5:18 PM

Spitzer better pray that no drunken illegal runs over a kid in NY for the next year.
Having just escaped the rapidly regressing Bronx (thanks Mike!) for said suburbs, I believe it when people say they’ve had it. Some contractors up here are making no-illegals, all english speakers a selling point.

Iblis on October 22, 2007 at 6:24 PM

The GOP needs to kick the Bushes, Marinez’s and Grahams of the party to the curb, and make immigration the central issue of the 2008 elections. I believe they can win on that issue alone if they are on the right side of it.

voiceofreason on October 22, 2007 at 7:03 PM

After the I’m here, this is my country marches last year, I know a lot of registered Democrats who are now one issue voters and they’ve finally got it through their thick skulls that liberal lawmakers actually stay awake nights thinking of new ways to sell out to the illegal immigration lobby.

If the liberals like Spitzer would just be themselves and if we could just engineer a couple, hell no we won’t go marches a year from now, the election would be all Republican.
