Vatican to Islamic scholars: So, you wanna talk, huh?

Then let’s talk about why it’s illegal to build churches in most Islamic countries.

The top Vatican official for Islam has praised a novel Muslim call for dialogue but said real theological debate with them was difficult as they saw the Koran as the literal word of God and would not discuss it in depth.

Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, in an interview on Friday with the French Catholic daily La Croix, also said Christians would have to discuss curbs on building churches in the Islamic world in the dialogue advocated by 138 Muslim scholars in the appeal.

His interview, coming after mostly positive comments by other Catholic Islam experts, signaled the world’s largest Christian church wanted a serious dialogue with Muslims that did not avoid some fundamental issues dividing the religions.

“Muslims do not accept that one can discuss the Koran in depth, because they say it was written by dictation from God,” Tauran said. “With such an absolute interpretation, it is difficult to discuss the contents of faith.”

The fact that Muslims can build mosques in Europe while many Islamic states limit or ban church building cannot be ignored, he said. “In a dialogue among believers, it is fundamental to say what is good for one is good for the other,” he said.

While we’re at it, let’s talk about Saudi Arabia pouring petrodollars into Wahhabist mosques and madrassahs all over the world, and let’s talk about that whole Iran being a world without gays thing. Let’s talk about the Saudis’ ridiculous attempt to mau-mau Europe over Muslims’ freedom of religion there.

Yeah, let’s talk. But prepared to do some listening for a change.

Hey a positive Catholic story!!! There truly IS a God!

Hah! Someone is a real good chess player at the Vatican.

Maybe those in need of church space in the Muslim world ought to consider using the empty churches of Europe. Israel rescues its Jews stranded in Muslim lands.

JiangxiDad on October 19, 2007 at 3:01 PM

I can only hope they might answer a question or two, BUT….
Would a muslim really do this? Honestly? Doesn’t the Koran allow for outright lies and deception when ‘talking’ to an infidel?

Yesss! Papa Benny has a spine! I love that man.

Oh come on, we all know that when a Muslim says lets talk what he is really saying is, you submit or we’ll kill you.

doriangrey on October 19, 2007 at 3:06 PM

“…do some listening for a change.”

I wish they would, but they won’t They see themselves as far superior to us infidels. Why should they listen to us? They think God has chosen them to rule the world and ya can’t talk somebody out of a conviction like that. As if they’re gonna say “Yeah, you’re right, God is wrong. We can live together as equals.” Ain’t gonna happen.

I’m glad that something positive has come out of the Catholic Church, but let us not forget that the Catholic Church has been a consistent enabler of Islamic evil for the last fifty years or so. For instance, Europe’s insane immigration policy come straight from the moral pronouncements of the Catholic Church. For another instance, the Catholic Church has often take the side of the Palestinians.

Europe’s insane immigration policy come straight from the moral pronouncements of the Catholic Church.

Fallaci’s works point to alliances between The Arab League. And that makes much more sense also considering the number of near empty churches throughout Europe.

This is one hell of a Pope! (no pun intended…well, okay, a little.) *sheepish grin*

Keep it up, Benny…don’t let ‘em slip away from these little fracases.

Huh. I think I like this Catholic present.

Yeah…they wanna talk alright…to discuss their terms of our surrender.

While I appreciate this story from the Vatican, it wasn’t from the Pope. I especially appreciate that it promotes Christianity and attacks a religion that is oppressing Christianity. All in all a good thing and high time.

but let us not forget that the Catholic Church has been a consistent enabler of Islamic evil for the last fifty years or so.

And my personal favorite the Pope APOLOGIZING for the Crusades (Christians around the world will never live long enough to stop hearing that one from muslims). There is nothing to apologize for in a defensive war.

More recently, the Pope praying in a mosque in Turkey probably wasn’t the best idea. . . unless you consider the ‘tit for tat’ of muslims wanting to turn an ancient Catholic Cathedral into a mosque in Spain a ‘good thing’.

I appreciate the sentiment of this story. I hope the Vatican continues to focus its condemnation on NON-CHRISTIAN entities that are oppressing Christians and they’ll get no complaints from this Protestant Christian.

Cheesy PR response: We can’t build churches without nuclear energy.

Get ready for it.

gabriel sutherland on October 19, 2007 at 3:22 PM

well what are the options? We cant effect the way things happen in Islamic systems, only they can do that. We do have power to change our systems. Lets remember we do not live in a Christian Theocracy therefore we have freedom of religion, so our option is to crack down on said freedom in order to mirror Islamic treatment of Christianity, by stopping mosque building in the West. Is that something people would agree on?

This is utter nonsense. with no shred of evidence. The Catholic Church does not control or dictated the immigration policy of any Country in the Last 50yrs. Heck the Vatican could not even so much as muster enough support to Kill a referendum on that made abortion more readily available in Italy. That the Catholic Church is concerned about Palestinians (esp Christians there) is not something to loathe, if i may say so. The fact that these people are trodden down is reason enough. You can be Pro-israel as it were,(or at least recognize their right to defend themselves from terrorist) and at the same time be concerened about those Palestinians who have not part in these horrible acts. To be totally one sided on the issue strikes me as foolish….

mainmann on October 19, 2007 at 3:25 PM

Benedict has been one to get the faithful in line. It’s the same tone JPII took towards the end of his Pontificate.

Remember, both of them lived through the Nazi persecutions, and JPII did a tremendous amount of healing, effectively reconciling the Church with Jews around the world. He even extended his hand towards Islam, which got him shot. But he showed off Catholicism when he went to prison and forgave his would-be assassin.

Benedict is simply following Papa’s footprints, but now with an invigorated line. He knows how hard it is to be Pope, and he knows he’s old, so he’s doing everything he can in the meantime.

Benedict is a scholar, as well. Don’t think he’s going to cosy up to the Wahabbists.

Eurabia, Conspiracy or Policy?

Europe’s insane immigration policy come straight from the moral pronouncements of the Catholic Church.

Illegal immigrant Muslims in Europe get sanctuary in church, and church promotes teaching of Koran.

The Pope is not amused.

JiangxiDad on October 19, 2007 at 3:34 PM

Maybe the Pope should, first, have a “dialogue” with those of the Protestant faith – yes, let’s have a dialogue about how the Protestant faith is “defective.”

Upon the resolution of same; yes, by all means, have your dialogue with Muslims.

Can you imagine the world forcing Muslim clerics to apologize for their jihad and asking for reparations?

(neither can I, but it’s a fun thought)

Connie on October 19, 2007 at 4:07 PM

One thousand years ago, Europe and the Church (when it was truly catholic) had some real issues. Even back then, the pope had more brains than Islam and the loonies therein. Islam is a cult. People can call it a “world religion”, but everything about it screams cult. Hells’ Angels could come up with a better religion. At least their women are dressed better in leather and tats.

There wasn’t then, and there isn’t now any room for dialog. Christians can work together (unless you are Der Neue Popen), Christians and Jews can work together. Islam works with no one!!! (much like Der Popenfueher)

Hening on October 19, 2007 at 4:08 PM

What the Pope should do at any meeting with muslims is to simply read from the Koran and Hadiths.

Right there into the faces of the deeply offended concession-demanding Islamic clerics.

Read one sick passage after another for, oh, about a half hour, and then simply walk out.

“In a dialogue among believers, it is fundamental to say what is good for one is good for the other,”

Unfortunately this rational belief is the complete antitheses of the Muslim belief.

A Muslim may share his Koran with a kuffar if one is hopeful that by reading it, they will be guided to Islam, however under no circumstances is a Muslim to accept a bible from a kuffar as it may influence his beliefs.

Ask the Imam.

LifeTrek on October 19, 2007 at 5:29 PM

The only dialogue I want with the Muslim world is at the tip of an ICBM (oops, don’t want to get banned) Pork BBQ .

The History of Jihad is mass murder and genocide that makes Stalin look good all because the Koran calls for mass murder. No matter how many Muslims exist, they can not deny that the doctrine for killing

He’s got the better hat, and the better head under it.

Call this late gnostic heresy (Islam) what it is, Il Papa, and ask them to return to the fold.

They have strayed because of a “prophet” whose example is unsavory and unsaintly.

Forgive them, and invite them to become followers of a Prophet of Peace, and not one of unholy violence.

In our Maronite Catholic Mass, you hear the word “Allah” a lot. It means God in Aramaic and Arabic (some of the Mass is said in Aramaic, the language of Christ). There were Catholics churches 700 years before the mo showed up.

As for the letter from the muslims, Bryan had a word for it… what was it??? Oh yes, chutzpah!

Zorro on October 19, 2007 at 8:06 PM

For instance, Europe’s insane immigration policy come straight from the moral pronouncements of the Catholic Church.

The open borders policy of Europe was enabled by the secular radicals of the EU who want to leave out any reference to God in their Constitution and create a secular paradise on earth. They get awfully snotty when the Catholic Church makes any suggestions. Immigration is a way for them to import outside voters who follow the line as long as they are bribed with government largess.

As for the Palestinians, you’ll recall that up to a few years ago 25% of their population was made up of Christians. They has dwindled due to the rise of Islam. Consequently the Catholic church is increasingly challenging Islam.

“…do some listening for a change.”

What I would do is simply write out a long letter detailing every thing that is wrong with Islam and send it the Ayatollahs in Iran whilst publishing it publicly for all to see.

aengus on October 20, 2007 at 9:52 AM

You all just don’t understand Islam or Muslims as it boils down to the same thing for them, you are all filthy Infidels that MUST submit willingly to them and their cult of Satanism, Islam or DIE.

Get with the program already as all they want to discuss is your surrender or how you want to die.
