Survey USA: Fred crumbles in California?

posted at 6:35 pm on October 17, 2007 by Allahpundit

Sept. 10, a few days after Fred finally announced: Rudy 28, Fred 26. Five weeks later, on Oct. 15: Rudy 39, Fred 18. What went wrong? HuffPo thinks it knows:

“Last summer, Thompson gave a speech before the Orange County Lincoln Club, one of the more powerful GOP organizations in O.C. and everybody was there,” Los Angeles-based Republican strategist Allan Hoffenblum tells HuffPolitics. “He bombed and has not been able to recover. There is no there, there and the voters are beginning to realize this.”

He did bomb at the Lincoln Club, according to Bob Novak, but that was in May, four months before that September poll put him just a shade south of Rudy. Obviously something’s happened since then, but what? I’m guessing it’s a combination of him being a little more conservative than Californians would prefer plus disgruntlement at his failure to live up to the massive Reaganesque hype he encouraged by staying out of the race and above the fray for months to build his mystique. Whatever, though. All it means is that Fred probably won’t win a state he wasn’t much expected to win anyway. It just makes the south and evangelicals — among whom he leads Rudy by double digits (but just barely) — that much more important.

Speaking of Novak, he’s run the numbers and found that the four leading Democrats currently lead the GOP’s big four in cash on hand, $104 million to $35 million. No typo. 3 to 1. WaPo has a piece out today explaining why this is — namely, a lot of monied Bush supporters either don’t like the GOP field or, belatedly, don’t like Bush himself:

Scores of Bush Pioneers and Rangers are not working for any Republican candidate, citing discontent with the war in Iraq, anger at the performance of Republicans in Congress and a general lack of enthusiasm. More than two dozen have actually made contributions to Democrats.

Matt Fong, a former California state treasurer, 1998 U.S. Senate candidate and two-time Bush Pioneer, said that after months of disappointment in the Republican Party, he had hoped to be recharged by the new crop of presidential candidates.

“I have yet to get interested in any of them,” he said. “I’m just not happy with the direction of our party. I think we have a huge credibility problem, which I have not seen any of the candidates show the ability to rise above.”

Ah well, buck up. After all, how much worse can things get?

Oh, right:

rudy-3rd.jpg

Update: If you’re thinking that that poll result makes nominating Fred a no-brainer, think again.

100 per cent of California Republicans I’ve spoken with today support him.

Wrong and wrong (sorry). Most of California is VERY conservative, aside from the sliver of shame along the coast. I think it’s because we’re getting SO burned by the last actor-turned “conservative” we voted in. The Governator’s attempts at turning our state into a PC, socialist, trans-gender, bisexual annex of Mexico is what’s hurting Fred.

NTWR on October 17, 2007 at 6:45 PM

30% of “Born Again” would support Hillary? What in the world is up with that?

But, with 66% of “born agains” supporting either Hillary or Rudy in that poll, it may say more about the lack of influence of Dobson than anything else.

Anything you hear from California must be believed only if verified by proven sources outside the state.. It is the propaganda capital of the country and susceptible to Clinton manipulation of the truth. Clintons are compulsive liars and the epitome of evil. They will flourish in California.

After seeing that WSJ poll, how can anyone with a brain think that, if it’s a 2 man race, that Mitt is one of the 2.

It’s clearly Rudy vs. Fred! in the primary.

A vote for Mitt is a vote for a tall, pretty Perot.

omnipotent on October 17, 2007 at 6:54 PM

Well, that seals it, we should just give up. Close down all the blogs since all hope is lost.

Capitalist Infidel on October 17, 2007 at 6:54 PM

If Fred has only the support of the south and Evangelicals as per your observation above, then his chances of winning the nomination are are slim and his chances of winning the election even slimmer. If Fred is to make a showing he will have to court the rest of the west coast, polish his approach in California the northeast and sizable parts of the mid-west. Even though, as you say, these areas were not his territory anyway, he would still need the Republican vote in those heavily populated areas to win any election.

jeanie on October 17, 2007 at 6:56 PM

My only problem with Hillary as compared to the other candidates is that she will tax the crap out of everyone. At the same time, I may be unemployed at the time that she is in office so I might need her hand-outs.

That’s the problem with nominating someone who is not a social conservative. It isn’t that it’s SOO much of a problem with the individual candidates. But for the candidates that are NOT social conservatives, it’s just one more thing that they are ‘like Hillary’ about.

If you have someone who is anti abortion, anti gay marriage, anti gun control, anti illegal immigration – THEN you have a difference to choose from.

THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Rudy, Mitt, John, Fred are all too much like Hillary (even though they have an R next to their name). So why not vote for the experience in Hillary if you are going to get all the other negatives anyway?

Again, all black social conservative Christians will vote Democrat. That’s where those numbers come from.

I’m voting for Hillary because she promised to give me YOUR money. Woo-hoo!

(Just kidding, of course. I could never vote for Hillary, even if she promised me she’d give me Bill Gates’s entire income for the rest of my life.)

aero on October 17, 2007 at 6:56 PM

Right now for non pundits most candidates are just for name recognition.

Hillary has Britney Spears like name recognition. Fred and other candidates outside of Rudy have Borat type name recogniton

That is one way a conservative can beat Hillary. If he plays the spin game better and paints his own picture rather than having Hillary and the dems do it.

William Amos on October 17, 2007 at 6:58 PM

Californians aren’t stupid. They aren’t going to vote for a terrorist supporting lobbyist who authored CFR.

It’s just a matter of time before his facade is brought down for the rest of the country to see.

She promised ME YOUR money! WTF is going on here?

lorien1973 on October 17, 2007 at 7:08 PM

Whatever the difference between men and women in Iowa, Fred has narrowed the lead to 6 points- I wouldn’t have guessed that he would’ve narrowed the gap so quickly; Romney was over 30% not so long ago.

Rudy will probably take CA, but I’m guessing that Fred will take Texas as long as he continues to improve his speaking performances.

And it should be noted that statest that went red in 2004 get extra delegates, which benefits Thompson. Whether it’ll be enough remains to be seen.

lorien1973 on October 17, 2007 at 7:08 PM

Very simple – she will do, say or promise ANYTHING to anybody to get their vote.

OBX Pete on October 17, 2007 at 7:19 PM

Hmmmm let’s see, WHAT could account for Fred’s poll drop?

Could it be the non-stop Fred is stupid/lazy/boring/not motivated/certainly not up to MY standards/has no passion/can’t get it up(the polls of course)discourse coming at him FROM ALL SIDES????!! NAH that can’t be it- He*l we all know how fair and balanced the media is!

Could it be that both the LEFT AND RIGHT MSM have already decided that RINO Rudy just MUST be the nominee!
Because (DEMS) Hillary can beat him or (RINOs) because Rudy is open-borders? NAH that can’t be it.

Shoot, beats the he*l out a me!

Filtering: 2,100 California adults were interviewed 10/12/07 through 10/14/07. Of them, 1,755 were registered to vote in the state of California. Of them, 519 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the Republican Primary, 782 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the Democratic Primary, and were included in this survey.

Ya think this might have some bearing on the results???

mhgoldwing on October 17, 2007 at 7:25 PM

Little support for Republicans? Gee, I wonder why?
Bush’s Dept. of Justice goes to court last week to stop the execution of a Mexican ILLEGAL ALIEN that murdered two teenage girls in Texas, while he doesn’t lift a finger to free two Immigration officials, jailed (Ramos & Campeon, both Hispanics) for having the audacity to shoot a drug smuggler on the border.
Murderers, drug dealers, MS-13 gang members continue to cross our border with Mexico (6 years after 9-11).
Prosecution of a Politically Correct war in Iraq.
Pelosi goes to Syria, the demented midget (Kucinich) makes nice nice with ImaDinnahJacket in Iran, both conducting foreign policy (not their job, State Dept. of Aministration is charged with foreign policy). Not a peep from Bush or GOP.
Media and Dems giving aid and comfort (not to mention classified information) to our eneimies while we are at war. Again, silence.
Sandy Berger commits felonies stealing/destroying documents from the National Archives. Hello, Justice Dept., anyone there?
If the GOP can’t beat Libs/Dems, how can we expect them to beat Al Qaeda?
We are supposed to be amped about a bunch of spineless RINOs?

It seems to me that a lot of these polls are “adjusted” to dampen morale mong Republicans but I have zero proof so take it with a grain of salt.

aengus on October 17, 2007 at 7:33 PM

CA gives away its delegates in the craziest way possible, by congressional district. If you win a majority of the 3 republican votes in Pelosi’s district, you get one delegate. If you win a majority of the hundreds of thousands of republican votes in Hunter’s district you get one delegate. So, the candidates have been focusing their energy wooing the votes in deep blue districts like those belonging to Maxine Waters. Buying each republican in her district a steak dinner would be cheaper than a mailer in Hunter’s district, but both are worth the same number of delegates. Go figure.

San Diego Repbulicans or Redding? Marin County or Bakersfield? Might sound stupid but in California it makes a difference. That said….Fred is behind and needs to step it up. The most interesting figure I see in the ‘poll’ is the 38-33-29 split with the Independents. There are the people who will decide 08.

Hey, look, more doomsaying from AP.

The poll confirms HRC can’t break 50% in a general election, and would need a third-party candidate. Unless that conservative Christian is as rich as Perot, good luck getting on enough ballots to make a difference.

Countdown to AP conspiracizing a Dobson-Soros alliance starts now.

Karl on October 17, 2007 at 10:35 PM

If a third party is going to offer up someone they had better get busy with the petitions and familiarizing themselves with the rules of each state.
One of the HA readers may be an expert on how it works but from what little I read it appears it is very difficult to do. Perot had the advantage of being a billionaire and had the resources to do it.

Anyone have better insight into the process?

Believe it or not, as I bash Bush a lot, but in 2000 when they announced that Florida had gone for Gore (which if accurate would have meant that he won the election) and in 2004 when they announced that Kerry was, per exit polls which were suppose to be pretty accurate, was ahead in all battleground states save one, both times I almost went into Anaphylactic shock! I was very dpressed anyway to say the least.

So there is some advantage to not caring that much.

I need a hero

He’s gotta be strong

And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I’m holding out for a hero ’til the morning light
He’s gotta be sure
And it’s gotta be soon
And he’s gotta be larger than life

In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There’s someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder and rising with the heat
It’s gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet
