Major scoop: Wii light saber to debut in the UK this month

posted at 8:50 am on October 16, 2007 by Bryan

October 26, 2007. Mark that date in history. The world will change forever.

British fans of Nintendo Wii and Star Wars will get a first glimpse of the console’s upcoming Light Sabre peripheral at a gaming festival being held later this month.

LucasArts will be exhibiting the peripheral alongside its forthcoming Wii title Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, at the GameCity festival, due to be held between 24 and 28 October. Unfortunately, gamers will only be able to get in touch with their Jedi sides and use the Light Sabre on one day: 26 October.

The WiiSaber is still expected to storm the galaxy next spring.

This is great news. Let’s all just try to remember not to chuck the Wiimote into the TV attempting the lightsaber boomerang move.

And Bryan, I

This will surely cause the early demise of knic-knacs and bric-a-brac in homes around the globe…not to mention a lamp or two.

*gets his Jedi holocron out and starts meditating*

Now…how do we get the Force Time Acceleration going…

MadisonConservative on October 16, 2007 at 9:05 AM

Huh. This might actually get me to think strongly about getting one of those WII things.

By next summer, I will have my large-screen TV, too. Double hm.

See? I’m so out of gaming I didn’t even call it Wii.

Meryl Yourish on October 16, 2007 at 9:16 AM

We may need to approve S-CHIP after all. Otherwise who’s going to ensure that all those lopped off arms get reattached?!

And Hollywood wept…

Slublog on October 16, 2007 at 9:23 AM

You fanbois trip me out. You guys realize that its not going to be that good, right?

We need a new X-wing vs TIE fighter.

And Hollywood wept…

Considering the number of Police Academy films, Hollywood has long ago run out of tears! The only regrettable thing is that, just when you think the crap has reached a new low, Hollywood lowers the bar even more!

Wow, how many expensive lcds and plasmas are going to get hacked into bits on Christmas morning…

Mr. Bingley on October 16, 2007 at 9:28 AM

I think this is cool, but come ON…I’m so tired of “Lego” Star Wars. Why not re-do Shadows of the Empire with this feature instead?

otcconan on October 16, 2007 at 9:32 AM

Should have launched it in New Zealand, the Force is strong with them:

20 percent of New Zealanders responded “Jedi Knight” to the religion question of their year 2000 national census

I’ve never played the Wii before but the Star Wars geek in me really wants to try this!!!

Yakko77 on October 16, 2007 at 9:38 AM

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no substitute for a good blaster at your side…

And the clouds in the heavens parted, and lo, a multitude of angels were there, singing Hosannah in the Highest!

I am *so* all over this! I cannot wait to get it! And to think, I just bought my sons a Wii the other day for Christmas…

I don’t care if they do another Star Wars Lego game, as we enjoyed the first two a LOT. But I do wish they would put out more of these where we could duel more.

I wonder if it will look like an actual lightsaber hilt? I’ll have to get several. I might even have to buy another Wii so we can battle each other.

jedijson on October 16, 2007 at 9:56 AM

I bought Wii solely due to the rumor that this would become a reality, all under the pretense of a Christmas present for the kids, of course.

All my childhood dreams are about to be realized

Wii are ready to use the force

Ochlan on October 16, 2007 at 10:19 AM

It’s not as clumsy or random as a blaster…

juanito on October 16, 2007 at 10:21 AM

I don’t get it. A light saber is a self-terminating laser, a heretofore physical impossibility. How does wii create this without resorting to the vinyl plastic tube over a flashlight that I already had in 1978?

Ha! My girlfriend mentioned in passing one day that she thought the Wii looked like a lot of fun, so I bought it for ‘her’ for her birthday, a month ahead of time.

BadgerHawk on October 16, 2007 at 11:25 AM

And I’m with jihadwatcher that I don’t really get how they’re going to make this work and work in a cool manner, but as AP would say – “I want to believe“.

It’s…umm…on the TV, not in the room, created by the Wii-mote.

Maybe I don’t get what you’re after here. My only problem with it is how they’re going to deal with a lightsaber being parried by an in-game item such as another lightsaber, yet the guy behind the controller keeps following through on his swing because there’s nothing physically there to stop him from doing so.

James on October 16, 2007 at 2:03 PM

I’ll wait till they come out with a new Leisure Suit Larry and the controller is a metal detector and you scan endless babe airline passengers.
