CNN airs footage of home, safe house of artist marked for death by Al Qaeda

It’s all true. I have the clip, although for obvious reasons I’m not going to post it. They even kept the name of the town in which he lives onscreen for most of the segment so I can’t show you the bit with the nut in the burqa saying she wants to kill him. But here’s the strangest part, which isn’t clear from the Gates of Vienna post: Vilks is aware that they’re filming him in front of the two houses. It’s not some stock shot of the door and the light fixture; it’s him, entering the building, with the camera right in his face. Unless CNN led him to believe that they weren’t filming or weren’t going to use the footage, and there’s no reason to think that they did, it was all done with his willing participation. Which, given the bounty placed on his head by Al Qaeda in Iraq and the verdict of Swedish police that he’s not safe at home, makes him one recklessly special idiot.

Here’s my favorite part, though. I blacked out the square on the lower right to obscure the name of his town but the distortion in the image of Jesus on the left was done by CNN. It’s one of Vilks’s drawings showing Christ being serviced by a small boy as a commentary, presumably, on the pedophile priest scandal. CNN used it as an example of how he’s no stranger to risque religious works. Here’s the original.

vilks2.jpg

Question: Why show the drawing at all if you’re only going to white out most of it, thereby making it indecipherable? Answer: Because they had already shown one of Vilks’s drawings of Mohammed as a dog earlier in the segment to give the viewers some idea of what the current controversy is about — and, stupidly and predictably, they whited out most of that too, lest any Muslims be offended and respond in the familiar way. Here’s the original and here, pathetically, is the redacted CNN version:

vilks1.jpg

See what’s going on here? After the disgraceful western media blackout of the Danish cartoons, CNN obviously felt it had to make some gesture towards showing the viewers the offending work. But not only didn’t they have the balls to show the offending part, they were sufficiently worried about being accused of, ahem, “Islamophobia” for the part that they did show that they went ahead and put up the drawing of Christ — which has nothing to do with the threat to Vilks — just to prove that they’re equal opportunity offenders. Fantastically lame.

AllahPundit,
How about showing us the address and Google earth shot of Wolf Blitzer’s home?

He’s a peaceful man so I’m sure there would be no problems with that.

Mcguyver on October 13, 2007 at 3:37 PM

Why? Like I say, Vilks apparently agreed to all this. It’s his fault, not CNN’s.

Allahpundit on October 13, 2007 at 3:38 PM

They pulled a “geraldo”…

Yep… This…is CNN I’d like to know WHO at CNN was responsible for airing something like that.

JetBoy on October 13, 2007 at 3:39 PM

Isnt the first time. Here is a CNN report showing an Israeli Nuke facility.

Israeli Nukes

The best part is at the end when the reporter laments he cant show Dick Cheney’s house because its blocked. What that has to do with the story I dont know.

William Amos on October 13, 2007 at 3:41 PM

Vilks apparently agreed to all this.

Do you really think Vilks agreed to this? I mean really?

The only other thing it could be, is a stunt to steer everybody away from the real home.

Mcguyver on October 13, 2007 at 3:42 PM

Fantastically lame.

That’s an understatement.

Zorro on October 13, 2007 at 3:43 PM

Like I say… there should be no problem in exposing Wolf Blitzer’s home address.

I don’t see what the problem would be Allahpundit.

Mcguyver on October 13, 2007 at 3:47 PM

Why would Vilk let purposely agree to the location to his safe house? He probably just assumed that journalists would idiotically air the location of someone who’s in danger.

terryannonline on October 13, 2007 at 3:49 PM

Sorry I meant

would not

You think Vilks gave the Okey Dokey to expose the location of his safe house ?

Maxx on October 13, 2007 at 4:09 PM

i actually watched this report by accident the other night, just came across it while flipping thru the channels.
I was thinkin why in the world are they saying almost exactly where he lives, down to teh fact that he is 1 1/2 hour drive from teh women saying she would kill him if she had the chance?
they even showed the “secret” route he takes to a safe house he sleeps in at night WTF is wrong with these people?

trailortrash on October 13, 2007 at 4:13 PM

they even showed the car he drives, o yeah sorry for the teh’s old irc habit :) lol

trailortrash on October 13, 2007 at 4:15 PM

CNN itself is in downtown Atlanta. I suspect they have nothing to fear from the moslems anyways.

Far left liberals, socialists, and communists have control of our media, our elementary schools, Congress, and soon the Presidency … yet for some reason conservatives are still under the illusion that we can convince these fruitcakes to reverse course through dialog.

We whine and cry about political correctness gone mad, yet we’re the first to stomp our feet and yell foul when one of our own decides to stand up and fight back.

The explanation given is that we’re “better than them.”

Unfortunately, we’re losing every battle, and about to lose the war due to a lack of will.

Will somebody please grow some Malkins please?!

Vilks should get a platter ready if he wants to make like John the Baptist.

He may think this is some kind of political theater, as Theo Van Gogh in Holland did- until the last U.S. presidential election day, when he learned the hard way that his Muslim enemies were more serious than he was.

And ended up butchered on his own hometown street for his fatal naivete.

Idiot. He does not deserve bodyguards and safe houses if he’s going to endanger his life like this. Maybe Ayaan Hirsi Ali should get his bodyguards. At least she doesn’t have a death wish.

If I was to say much more than bad comedy, My rant would make Mcguyver’s comment look mellow. I will say that we on the right should have some civility but to think it is going to change the insane actions on the left is as foolish an argument as — ‘if the US shows our enemies that we don’t torture than they will treat our Troops with respect’ — it is past time we fight back against this one sided insanity! see I almost went off on a rant. sorry.

[Oh you're good]
Sometimes it’s the bad comedy that’s all I have left.
With whatever sanity there is left over, I can laugh, laugh till I cry.

The tactic of bringing ourselves down to the leftest level has always been discouraging, foolish and without any victories to speak of. The struggle of right and wrong as determined by by the lefts so called morality – anti-war & pro-life – is in its self contradictorily. We can’t expect our enemies to play by the rules.

Because there are no rules.

I wonder if AP gets paid either by the comment, word or views?

In this country, you gotta get the traffic first. Then when you get the traffic, you get the iPhone. Then when you get the iPhone, then you get the women.

Entelechy on October 13, 2007 at 7:52 PM

You got that wrong buddy. Their goal was to get him killed.

Because of his location, it is not that likely that a muslim offended by his m-dog “drawing” would kill him. Frankly the drawing itself is so lame, I am offended when the media refers to it as anything but chicken scratch (do muslims have something against chickens?)

Their goal was to get him killed by Christians. The other drawing is 50 times more offensive and he took the time to break out the water colors on that one.

Christians killing an artist. Now that is the story CNN wants.

Agrippa2k on October 13, 2007 at 7:56 PM

If I went on a rant, I’m not sure which would come first, black helicopters or me getting banned by AP ;:- ) especially since LSU just lost to KU in 3rd ot

Well, I know Turner is in bed with Terrorist sympathizers. Maybe this is his way in helping them actually complete the task they have been assigned to complete.

CNN is Al Jazeera lite. They think America and Christians are the enemy. They won’t be happy until all the jihadis prefer them over Al Jazeera. I wish they weren’t so insistent on helping the enemy.

The only other thing it could be, is a stunt to steer everybody away from the real home.

I did something like that after Hezbollah threatened me. I wrote that I lived in Achrafiyah, East Beirut, (where many foreigners live) when I actually lived on the other side of the city.

It appeared reckless that I did that, but I knew what I was doing.

Michael J. Totten on October 14, 2007 at 1:46 AM

Agrippa2k on October 13, 2007 at 7:56 PM

I refuse to click on the uncensored link for that pic but the description is enough. If he has to be offensive, I’d rather see Jesus depicted as a dog (man’s best friend ain’t so bad, eh?) than as this “artist” has depicted him.

Sad thing is, if Jesus were here, he’d forgive the “artist” and move on. Mo certainly wouldn’t. Sad times when this type of )”?# is considered “art.”
