Video: Jimmy Carter on his one mistake as president

From yesterday’s Situation Room, but better late than never. Yeah, can you believe it? He actually thinks he made a mistake during his presidency. Fortunately, he only made one. You’ll find the revelation at the very end of the clip. Before that comes slab after slab of juicy red meat, beginning with a valentine to his friends on the right and segueing effortlessly into an apologia with Iran replete with reference to the “protective devices” they may or may not be building. Question: If these devices are simply a “protective” defensive response to U.S. aggression, how come their nuclear program pre-dates 9/11 by years?

Pay attention too to his strategy for countering the Iranian threat. It consists of two stages: (1) in the near term, diplomacy, (2) in the longer term, as they near possible completion of a bomb, stronger diplomacy. I kid you not.

Jimmy Carter on his one mistake as president

What was that getting elected?

Britcop on October 11, 2007 at 9:22 PM

The stupidest man on earth!

Gatordoug on October 11, 2007 at 9:23 PM

I wish someone would just put him out to pasture. Preferably on a farm in Siberia.

Mindcrime on October 11, 2007 at 9:24 PM

That screencap reminds me of a character from The Dark Crystal for some reason.

“Hmmmmmmm!!!”

Dave Shay on October 11, 2007 at 9:24 PM

I’m not even going to watch. I will get so angry I won’t be able to sleep.

peacenprosperity on October 11, 2007 at 9:25 PM

You ought to throw O’Reilly talking points memo (from tonight) up as an update… He destroys Carter, and Blitzer for his weak interviewing skills.

RightWinged on October 11, 2007 at 9:26 PM

There was a day that I could speak the name of Jimmy Carter with a note of respect. That was long ago.

Please. This man, not entirely unlike Reagan, is slipping. He is not a young sprout anymore, and the wages of time are tolling.

It is one thing to talk about his political statements; it is entirely another to talk about them and deny that they are the product of a man who is no less human than the rest of us, and is quite probably under the influence of that unkind force we call time.

HE’S A BLITHERING OLD DODDARD. STOP TAKING HIM SERIOUSLY.

As civilized folk, it’s the least we owe any person of his age.

My grandmother always said that “People are all the same, no matter who you’re talking about.”

And I don’t take that silly old oatbasket any more seriously than Jimmy Carter!

Honestly. This is abuse of the senile.

thejackal on October 11, 2007 at 9:27 PM

“Diplomacy” is not a solution to anything. It is a means of finding what actions are necessary to take for a solution. Am I the only one one just wants to smack supposedly intelligent people who can not understand this?

Resolute on October 11, 2007 at 9:28 PM

Jimmy Carter on his one mistake as president

Nonsense. There were far more than just one.

If he’s ranking them, however, I would have to say that not listening to Tim the Enchanter has to be in the top three.

Harpazo on October 11, 2007 at 9:29 PM

emotional posts make bad spelling and grammar

Resolute on October 11, 2007 at 9:30 PM

Ahem. I should qualify that.

This man, not entirely unlike Reagan IN HIS LATER YEARS, is slipping.

Didn’t want anyone to think I was…I was…Oh, what was I talking about???

thejackal on October 11, 2007 at 9:30 PM

First off Jimma, Military option does not necessarily mean war!

Secondly Jimma, you want us to TALK to Iran because, well YOU talked to Iran. But Jimma, you talked and Iran seized Americans and held them hostage!

Third, Jimma, if Iran knows we will NEVER use force, then Jimma they will never change! We will talk, they will continue to pursue nukes, and they will continue to aid terrorists. And one day Jimma……….

Jimma, will you ever learn why peace through strength works, and peace through appeasement NEVER works?

Gatordoug on October 11, 2007 at 9:30 PM

Mr. Peanut,

Hening on October 11, 2007 at 9:38 PM

This man, not entirely unlike Reagan IN HIS LATER YEARS, is slipping.

At least the Great Reagan had people who loved him enough to get him off of the world stage when the time came. And, for the Great Reagan’s part, he still had enough marbles to listen.

baldilocks on October 11, 2007 at 9:43 PM

Ford’s pardon of Richard Nixon MADE Jimmuh POTUS.

After Carter was elected, the one mistake that he made was that….he served.

My collie says:

Well, of course he served. A Georgian would never admit that there is something to be learned from General Sherman, ya’ know.

CyberCipher on October 11, 2007 at 9:44 PM

I’d rather listen to a bag of Goobers decaying than to this self-defeating fluxhead.

Did the Saudis buy him down to his marrow, or what?

profitsbeard on October 11, 2007 at 9:59 PM

What kind of joke is this, asking Jimmy advice on how to handle Iran? Are they punking the country here? How could anyone seriously present Cater as an expert on what to do in Iran?

Jimmy Carter is an idiot. As a proud graduate of the Naval Academy, and the father of Naval Academy grad, I’m ashamed that this clown and loser is also a USNA grad.

Carter is a member of that group of elite idiots that believe in their own moral superiority, and of their false ability to convince an adversary to see things their way. They’ve never learned from history that diplomacy doesn’t work.

Jimmy Carter, moron.

Jimmy’s right. He did make 1 mistake during his presidency. It just lasted 4 years.

lorien1973 on October 11, 2007 at 10:36 PM

I might have been reelected president.

Those are powerful words, fortunately for us, and not for him.

He will never overcome what happened on one glorious night in Nov. of 1980. Nor will Rosalind. They’ve been the most bitter farts ever since. That will be their legacy.

Others–DON’T HURT ME!!

baldilocks on October 11, 2007 at 10:46 PM

He did make only one mistake during his presidency. It started on day 1 and ended 4 years later.

sMack on October 11, 2007 at 10:48 PM

Carter only got elected because of timing.

In retrospect giving Gerald Ford another four years would have been the better decision. Ford was a Republican who knew how to work in a bipartisan way because of all his years in the House. He could have united this nation but he was rejected by an anti-Republican offense in 1976 which brought forth morons like Jimmy Carter who had zero credentials when it came to national or international issues. Our nation has been paying the price ever since.

Some examples:

Middle East- Sure Carter gets credit for the Camp David accords. Bastard even got the international equivilent of the grammy for it. But…. Had Carter not allowed the deposed Shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment at the Mayo clinic, the whole reason for taking the American hostages wouldn’t have existed. I’m not suggesting that Iran would be a U.S. friend at this point but I am stating as fact that our involvement with Iraq/Iran tensions would have been far less had this idiot farmer from Georgia had the least understanding of international affairs.

Military- Our troops were demoralized and impotent at the end of four years of Carter’s bad stewardship. They were punished because Democrats hate the military and Carter had no understanding of the fact that an American fleet of the coast of a restive nation is far more potent a declaration of diplomacy than anything that comes out of the U.N. Personally, I joined the military soon enough to hear the tales of those who survived the Carter years. Carter treated our troops horribly- miserable pay with zero support from the civilians Carter appointed to the DOD. It is a true testament to our founding fathers that we didn’t see a military coup.

Domestic issues- Carter failed. Enough said. I hope we never return to the days where folks are bragging they locked into a 14% mortgage rate.

On the plus side, Ronald Reagan would never have been elected in 1980 had Jimmy Carter been such a dismal failure after the election of 1976. A competent anti-Watergate choice could well have led this nation down a far different path.

What? No, that’s crap, he doesn’t get to count his presidency as one mistake!

Bad Candy on October 11, 2007 at 10:53 PM

Kini on October 11, 2007 at 10:58 PM

Meh, He’s just co-posturing for the position of co-President emeritus/co-ambassador emeritus to everywhere (co-ing with Billy Jeff) in the Clinton II administration.

Lemme see:
- Double-digit inflation
- Double-digit unemployment
- Double-digit mortgage interest rates
- The overthrow of the Shah of Iran (beginning of modern Islamic terror)
- The Iran hostage crisis (first event in modern Islmaic terror)
- The botched rescue fiasco of said hostage crisis
- Treaty giving away the Panama Canal
- The Mariel Boatlift (Castro emptied his jails on us)

I’m sure there’s more, but that’s all that comes to mind now.

All in four years! What a dis-honorable legacy!

mojojojo on October 11, 2007 at 10:59 PM

… and never voted for another Dem in my life.

drunyan8315 on October 11, 2007 at 10:29 PM

I “sinned” many times before the year 2000 (some might argue that a vote for the Republican candidate in that year was a “sin” as well).

However, being black, I might be able to cop a plea in light of the fact that most black Americans have been loyal Democrat voters for some time.

Pay no attention to the fact that my parents converted to the Republican Party two elections before I did. ;-) I guess I realized well into my adulthood that my folks were smarter than I earlier thought they were.

The rest of my family had been JFK dems. He even turned the majority of them. So I do have to give credit where it’s due.

PowWow on October 11, 2007 at 11:44 PM

Jimmy Carter has supernatural powers that only the most rabid leftist would usually ascribe to George W. Bush. He single handedly turned Iran from a staunchly pro-US, Pro-Israel ally into our deadliest, craziest enemy. I bet he could summon hurricanes and collapse bridges merely by willing it.

Nosferightu on October 11, 2007 at 11:44 PM

I never thought I would see the day that an ex-president would make it his defining life’s mission to give aid and comfort to our enemies. He is a treasonous SOB.

I think something happened to Jimmuh about 1978 (possible stroke) that has progressed to this day. He has lost all touch with reality even if he ever had it. If you notice my screen name, I had to endure this man thirty years ago and here we are again; I can’t endure him any longer. Please, someone who cares about this man, get him some help.

Middle East- Sure Carter gets credit for the Camp David accords…

highhopes on October 11, 2007 at 10:49 PM

I disagree. He bribed the living hell out of both the Egyptians and the Israelis for their little photo-op at Camp David, to the tune of over $2bn/yr in foreign aid. And after the War of Attrition (1974?), Sadat was well and truly beaten by the Israelis, so he had no choice but to play statesman.

On top of the aid, the Egyptians got much of the Sinai back, along with all the oil wells the Israelis had drilled and put into production in the four years since the Yom Kippur War (1973).

Jimmah was a “legacy” whore who was in some ways more naive and worse than BillyJeff. The damage done by those two collectively to US prestige abroad is incalculable. Only Jimmah wrecked the domestic economy more than BillyJeff because of the internet “bubble” thingy.

Wanderlust on October 12, 2007 at 4:16 AM

I was thinking along those same lines.
444 days of “talking”. As opposed to Reagan’s approximately 444 seconds.
Which proves that talking only matters if one is saying the right thing.

Carter didn’t grasp that concept back then.

It still seems beyond his reach.

Run Jimmah! Run! It’s not too late…

zb42 on October 12, 2007 at 5:58 AM

I didn’t read through the whole thread, so I don’t know if anybody else has linked to everybody’s least favorite President’s remarks calling Cheney a chickenhawk. If someone else mentioned his stupid remarks, I apologize.

Sean M. on October 12, 2007 at 6:11 AM

Maybe this is why people associate a southern accent with stupidity. Fortunately, Jimmy isn’t representative of the whole south.

BeachBaby on October 12, 2007 at 6:13 AM

I don’t know if he actually believes that tripe, but if he does he is suffering from a psychological delusion brought on by the shock of the realization that he is the worst president in modern times. His money and stature insulate him from real life situations that would force him to seek professional help just to function in society.

right2bright on October 12, 2007 at 9:15 AM

Carter’s view is that the Iranians are totally reactionary. We talk with them, they’ll play nice. We talk tough and they’re forced to defend themselves.

Once again we see how racist liberals are, refusing to believe the Iranian leadership could actually have an independent agenda.

T J Green on October 12, 2007 at 9:17 AM

Gatordoug on October 12, 2007 at 9:24 AM

Why doesn’t someone ask Jimma why he didn’t “negotiate” with the killer rabbit, eh? He seemed to recognize the fact that talking wouldn’t help, when his own, umm… safety was involved. He’s really pathetic. Having been decidedly less educated about politics in my early years, I’m thankful that I am a few years too young to have ever voted for him. Because I was just stupid enough that I might have done so.

lan astaslem on October 12, 2007 at 9:29 AM

I hope this is not going to become a trend. By that I mean ex-presidents refusing to keep their hands out of the political pot. They could do a lot of harm since people in other countries may not understand that it’s all rhetoric with no real power behind it. Carter needs to go back to the farm and shut up.

jeanie on October 12, 2007 at 9:39 AM

thejackal on October 11, 2007 at 9:27 PM

You must have been non-existent or mentally incapacitated during the man’s presidency, then.

He and the Democrat Congress of the time nearly destroyed our economy. I experienced the destruction firsthand.

He made us look as weak as any Third World country by twiddling his thumbs while our citizens were rotting in Iran for a year and a half, stemming from a diplomatic situation that he himself caused.

He mumbled feeble condemnations at the Soviets while they invaded Afghanistan and pushed Communism forward in South America, while sitting on his hands.

There was talk among the (crypto-Marxist) pundits of the American presidency being too difficult for one person, and some advocated splitting the job up for several people. A politburo, if you will.

Thank God for Reagan.

Texas Nick 77 on October 12, 2007 at 10:41 AM

Sorrow is thy name, Jimmy Carter.

Weep that the hostage situation and the failed rescue attempt meant only one thing to that sorry excuse of a person, his loss of office.

Cringe at our lack of vision, revisiting the loss and the judgment on today’s person in office who is merely another form of the same globalist. Like the Star Trek Bork, globalist assimilation is inevitable according to themselves.

Which candidate eschews globalism with a practical strategy to protect our original Constitution: liberty and justice under the law?

Forgive the rant, but wasn’t GWBush the Governor of Texas 13 years ago during the trial of the murderous raping criminal and illegal scum from Mexico now legally condemned to death? With liberty and justice under the law, the sell-out Carter by any other name would be known as Bush.

The one good thing about Carter. When I walked into Barnes and Noble and saw his hatchet job on Israel book, I gnashed my teeth. Then I thought, “Pat Buchanan is going to agree with everything in this book, and it is going to just tear up his kishkes, agreeing with Carter.” Heh.

Question: How do you move a guy up on your “Please Hurry Up And Die” list when he’s already #1 on it?

I do hope he lives long enough to witness that the first strike of our coming attack on Iran is (hopefully) launched from the USS Carter, and to hear Dubya repeat that point just to rub that little wussy’s nose in it though.

When he said one more helicopter I literally and not figuratively rolled on the floor laughing. I thought he said that military is not an option and negotiations above all else until the comply? Yet he’d have used one more military helicopter for the well thought out rescue. heh!

I hope this is not going to become a trend. By that I mean ex-presidents refusing to keep their hands out of the political pot. They could do a lot of harm since people in other countries may not understand that it’s all rhetoric with no real power behind it. Carter needs to go back to the farm and shut up.

It seems like it’s becoming a trend among living Democratic ex-presidents.

On that note, imagine how much damage BillyJeff will do to US interests around the world in the years to come…

I hope you are right, Teddy. I prefer to just think of that boat by its designation SSN 23, third in the Seawolf class. Aside from its wussy nameplate, it’s got toys built into it that would make any submariner (aside from those who love boomers, that is) green with envy.

Now if only that boat becomes the “Shangri-La” (yes, WWII reference) that launches an attack on certain soft targets in Iran…

Liberals: gotta love ‘em!!!

Can’t distinguish genuine friends from genuine enemies.

Can’t distinguish real problems from imaginary ones.

Can’t distinguish failure from success.

Think that the looniest idea is the most brilliant ’cause nobody else is pushing it.

And think that continuing to lurch from disaster to disaster is a resume enhancement and shows they “really care”.
