A Marine Truther? Updated: “Johnny Wave”

posted at 4:55 pm on October 11, 2007 by Bryan

Does anyone have any idea who the gentleman on the left is?

img00082.jpg

Whoever he is, he was seen in Marine dress blues today, holding a “9-11 Truth Now” sign. Here’s all that we know so far.

I just got a call from my wife on her lunch break. Seems there was a group of Truthers at the Promonade in Santa Monica, CA and in their ranks was a Marine in full dress blues. She said, “I almost punched him in the face”. I love her.

Anyway, I told her to go back and get some pics with her cell phone. She was only able to get a couple before the guy left, receiving many thanks from his Twoofer pals.

img00080.jpg

img00081.jpg

If the gentleman is a real Marine (and I would be unsurprised to learn that he isn’t), I’m sure Jon “I am the troops” Solz will want to have a talk with him, since military members aren’t supposed to wear their military uniforms while engaging in political activity.

Update: Here’s a close-up of the Marine’s medals. The pics were taken with a cell camera, as mentioned above, so they’re low quality. Also as mentioned above, the guy was gone before more and better pics could be taken.

img00082cu.jpg

Here’s what looks to be the type of sign he was carrying.

911truthnow250×386.jpg

Update: I see some speculation about his shoes/boots in comments. Here’s a close-up, with the color goosed and contrast exaggerated so that you can see them a little better. It’s hard to tell, but they don’t look like cowboy boots to me.

img00080shoe.jpg

Update: I go off for a little while and you guys conduct an investigation. So the question now is, is our Marine Johnny Wave?

Update: A couple more photos to look at. Courtesy what must be a one-man outfit called Republicans for 9-11 Truth, here’s “Johnny Wave” out holding one of those signs again, probably in West Hollywood iirc from the last time I was there.

johnny_wave.jpg

And here is what might be the same gentleman’s publicity photo. If they’re the same guy, then “Johnny Wave” is actually an aspiring actor by the name of Zach. That doesn’t mean that he’s not a real Marine, since he might be, but if he is he ought not be out there wearing his uniform during protests.

zach-pubphoto.jpg

Here’s a close-up of Johnny Wave’s medals, for you Marines in the crowd. It’s not a great close-up, but it’s better than the first one.

johnny_wavemedals.jpg

Update: I was a bit skeptical, but it does look like Zach’s our guy. Here’s a cropped version of this shot, from a June 11 protest (they’re out protesting on the 11th of each month). Compare it to the publicity shot above.

If he is, whoopty doo. He’s the first one in 4 years. There aren’t likely to be many others.

If he isn’t, tell a group of real Marines. They’ll show him what it means to be a Marine.

Regardless, you don’t punch a Marine in the face. Not if you value your well-being.

Phony soldier? There I said it. Nah, nah, nah, nah__ nah, nah.

lets all calm down until we find out if he is a marine or not.
If he is phony, shame…and if he is a marine I guess he has earned the right to express himself…even if it is against regulations to do so in uniform.. He would be aware of the regs regrding this..

In the second photo, there is a sliver shot of his shoe. Call me crazy or uninformed; but, it seems to be a pointed toe shaped as opposed to the glossy round toe shoes. Is he a poser?

allie on October 11, 2007 at 5:08 PM

Couple of scenarios:

A) He’s a real Marine Twoofer, and the first seen since 9/11.
B) He’s a Troofer’s bud who was asked to do it to be, like, totally cool man!
C) He’s a Troofer who’s not actually a Marine but dressed up so their cause would gain credibility. (Would you put it past people who think Bush brought down the WTC?)

amerpundit on October 11, 2007 at 5:08 PM

I’m quite sure he’s not a Marine. I am concerned, though, how and where he got the uniform. The fact that he has been so well photographed means that he’s dead as far as impersonating a Marine. Figuratively, of course.

Any one notice the size of the arch of his foot in the second photo( one with bent leg)? Dress shoes have no arch height like that. Hard to tell but I am suspicious.

MNDavenotPC on October 11, 2007 at 5:15 PM

I would like to think this person just rented the Marine Dress Blues at a local shop and was doing this for effect.

However, if he turns out to be a real Marine, I do believe some addition time with GySgt. Hartman would be in order:

I’ll bet you have. I got in right before the cutoff for the Vietnam-era (by 1 day), so I never went there. Guarded a lot of the refugees at Camp Pendleton right after recruit training. Not a fun job.

God bless you for your service.

Brian on October 11, 2007 at 5:31 PM

When I was in boot camp, there was a platoon made up of recruits from Arkansas, and they all wore cowboy boots – but only in thier utilities. They did everything in those boots – it was supposed to be something “special” but we all thought it was just stupid and well, painful. It was supposed to have been part of a pilot program, but it didn’t go over very well.

An honorable job, nonetheless. I’ve noticed that those refugees (and their offspring) make some of the best Americans. They know what it’s like to live in a real hell-hole.

baldilocks on October 11, 2007 at 5:41 PM

You can buy used Marine Corps uniforms at most drycleaners outside of any military base. I would have loved to seen more detail on the blues to see if he had the right hardware. Everything was aligned correctly, so my thoughts are an EX Marine.

Mazztek on October 11, 2007 at 5:41 PM

This should not be jumped on right away and hard, even though my initial leaning is a poser.

Without better photos, ie someone there with a real camera or a newspaper cameraman it would be hard to nail down a faker like that unless you did facial comparisons to see if he shows up a the next go round in civilian clothes.

To me he looks real short to be a marine judging from the second photo. I know a few but they have to be tough as nails to get through basic pound for pound.

Hopefully someone who reads HA will have happened to be there with a digital camera and can send better shots.

Otherwise it is really a very hard issue to do an id with what we have.

If any of the local base marines look here I bet they will scan all their people to see if they have a close visual match.

“EX” is right. Wished I could make out his ribbons a bit better – I can’t make out a firewatch ribbon, and I’ll bet there’s one or two that either (1) don’t belong, or (2) are in the wrong order. Those “shoes” definitely don’t look regulation to me.

If this person actually IS a marine…which, I highly doubt….I imagine he is also a muslim. doh. lighten up and don’t attack me for this, please.

Also, these uniforms are available everywhere. Check your local salv. army, or ebay for that matter…

bridgetown on October 11, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Hmmmmm. The middle ribbon looks a bit like the Purple Heart. If that is the case, he should have at least a National Defense Service Medal, and Combat Ribbon. I can only see three ribbons and a qualification (?) badge. Seems funny to me though that IF it is a Purple Heart and he had been in combat, those are the only three ribbons/medals he had.

Of course this comes from a Soldier and in the Army we love our medals and ribbons a lot more than Marines do.

In any case, this Marine (if he is such) is an NCO (lance corporal) and a leader of troops. He DOES know better and should be stopped. Again, IF he really is a Marine.

When I call someone and Ex Marine, it is because he has done something DISLOYAL and to DISHONOR or DISGRACE his fellow Marines.

For instance, Murtha calling the Haditha Marines baby killers and murderers, without any semblance of a trial.

This POS? We in the Military know all about the terrorists. He knows better, chooses to smear.

thomashton on October 11, 2007 at 5:51 PM

Lance Corporal is not a NCO neither are the chevrons on that uniform. That is E4 Corporal 2 up one down and NCO. The medal on the left looks like bronze star without valor. It would be worn on the left of the purple heart. But in order for have a purple heart and a bronze star and whatever the lowest one (the one to the right of the Purple heart)is he would have more that 3 ribbons.

“Please see further updates on website at http://www.911truthla.net. The below text re “Johnny Wave” is from Katy Kurzman-Steele who participated in the May 11th action. Please note we are still gathering information on Mr. Wave and his background.

Friends,

There are many heroes in this movement. There are ones who put their relationships, jobs and reputations on the line. Ones who whistle-blow and face the wraths of their departments. And then there are ones who will lay their lives on the line for the service of our country, come home and put everything on the line again, facing dishonorable discharge to court-martial, for their country in a fight possibly more dangerous. This is a man of courage and honor.

I understand what it is to take an oath to defend the Constitution from all enemies both foreign and domestic, having taken the oath 3 times myself. Yet to see this man and to fathom the depth of his valor humbles me to the core.

Johnny will be present at our June 2nd meeting and will explain to our group his marine background and how he came to the 9/11Truth movement. Scott, Randy, Katy and others will discuss the May 11th action itself and plans for June and July ’11th’ actions. If he’s wearing a Purple Heart, that makes it more likely he’s a fraud. Every fake soldier, Marine, sailor or airman I can recall wore or claimed a Purple Heart.
Some people’s dishonor knows no bounds.
Unfortunately, I would not be surprised if he is real. Remember, TNR’s own Private Beauchamp is a real soldier-a POS, to be sure, but a real soldier nonetheless. You get enough apples together, eventually a bad one will turn up.
Just remember, whoever does the honors, you have to repeat “You can’t handle the truth!” when you administer the Code Red.

Sorry, but that is only 99.99% correct. A Marine is not always a Marine. John Murtha is a classic example. He dishonors the Marines and his country. He has no honor. Wearing of a uniform does not a Marine make nor does serving time in the Marine Corp, it is far more that that.

Trying to match up the ribbons he’s wearing – recognize the CAR, a Navy PUC, the NDSM, possibly a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, but there’s a couple I don’t recognize and can’t find images of – the one between his NDSM and PUC, and the other one on the opposite side (bottom row, middle) that I don’t recognize. Any ideas?

I do find it interesting he doesn’t have a Good Conduct Medal. Maybe he was one of those that made Cpl very early and hasn’t been in 3 yrs yet, or he’s a total screwball, or he’s a fake.

I don’t have a myspace account, but if you do, you can see what he has under pics. The video directly on his page also gives a better view, but still grainy.

And here is his myspace page.

Well, I don’t think my wife (yes it was my wife) was actually going to do any “punching” of anyone’s face, she was just really honked off. She did the right thing and called a real Marine.

Sadly, while I was making phone calls to some pals to get them to join me for a little *ahem* stroll down the Promenade, she sent the pics and informed me that the guy had left.

After my initial disgust and disappointment in this guy, I decided that (if he is a real Marine) all he deserves is just that. My disgust and disappointment. He’s earned the right to wear the uniform, I just don’t like the fact that he would use it in such a fashion.

If, in fact, he is pretending to be a Marine, then I’m sorry I couldn’t get up there to say “hello”.

TheEJS,

I will do that.

Regarding his ribbons…. I’ve been trying to I.D. his Marine Corps Good Conduct and Iraq Campaign as well as Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. It took me 4 1/2 years to make E-5 and I was in combat. This guy should have his Good Conduct after 3. Something really smells. He should have three rows and in order.

Agreed. There’s a couple ribbons I can’t make out, and I compared what I could see with Google images (they have added some new ones in the last 20 years…) and theres one next to his PUC that I can’t ID. And there’s no Good Conduct. But, he may not have 3 years in, either.

After Vietnam, it got a lot easier to make Sgt. I made Sgt in 3 1/2 years, SSgt in 6. I knew guys that were making Sgt in under 3. Lots of “meritorious” promotions going out to try and keep retention high. Again, that was 20 years ago, so I don’t know what it’s like now.

I’m being convinced that this may very well be Johnny Wave. If he is a Marine, he is misrepresenting his service at the least and trashing the uniform and our brothers at the worst. This is why people like ernesto and enrique and even Allahpundit cannot understand our anger or disgust over what we have defended and will defend; Things like our flag and yes MY uniform let alone the those offensive people I must call citizens.

Defin the best pic so far, trying to see if I can get it blown up without losing quality (what I get for not having my laptop with photoshop).

Good work with the research.

Agreed. Anyone that’s ever been thru USMC recruit training will tell you that’s one uniform you have to earn.

In the radio interview Johnny Wave says that the movie
Loose Changed helped change his mind.

Correction: According to this USMC regulation (pdf; page 78) a Marine might be able to wear cowboy boots with the uniform in question.

Bryan’s close-up, however, casts doubt on whether they’re cowboy boots.

I was awarded my set of dress blues right out of boot camp at MCRD San Diego in 1968. Promoted to Pfc. and was platoon 2071′s right guard on graduation. I worked hard to get them I can tell you.

Just looked at your reference, that reg only applies to combat boots worn with the utility uniform, not the dress uniform. Cowboy boots do not fall in that category.

Semper Fi!

I was in platoon 2066, MCRD, San Diego, 1975. You sure did earn those blues!
