Wayne State students and activists heckle Daniel Pipes

As if on cue from the discussion going on in the Tierney post, here’s a post about how Islam scholar Daniel Pipes was treated on the campus of Wayne State University Monday night. Prior to the speech, Pipes was defamed in flyers around campus as a racist.
There’s nothing about the WSU speech on his blog yet, but Anti-Racist blog captured video.
I’ll preface the video by noting that this isn’t the worst treatment of conservatives we’ve seen on university campuses. No pies were thrown and the stage wasn’t rushed, and Pipes finished his speech and the Q&A. But it is evident that some in the audience just couldn’t behave themselves, some insisted on being rude and drowning out his speech with noise, and one had to be escorted out. He’s the one responsible for the “Pipes is a racist” flyers, by the way.
Here’s that clip.
For the rest, head over to Anti-Racist blog.
This kind of thing never happens to, say, Michael Moore or other liberals when they speak on college campuses. I’m not saying that it should; it just shouldn’t happen to conservatives. But it does, and with increasing frequency it seems.

Looks like a lot of head coverings in the audience down front. Also a person with a covered head stood and then followed the disrupter out. Maybe things did not go as they hoped. There was applause when they were escorted out.

I like the fact that the audience clapped when the douche bag was escorted out. There is hope yet…

Okay, this is way off topic, but can I be the first to say, “James Oddo for President!” I was once a Fred supporter, but this guy has my vote now as a write-in. I’ve been waiting for this to happen for 5 years now.

Expose them, call them out, force university administrators to pay attention and be fair. Is that too much to ask?
Bryan on October 10, 2007 at 2:49 PM
Good piece by Michael Barone wondering why people would send their kids to these stupid, expensive colleges anymore. Good question.

Get pro-active. The moment an event is approved and booked, the Admin should be pushed to issue a statement regarding conduct, with notice that order will be enforced during the event.
If the Admin doesn’t cooperate, blast ‘em publicly.
T J Green on October 10, 2007 at 2:52 PM
public universities? if you’re a constituent, and you pay state taxes that fund that college, then you’ve got every right to call into question the behavior of the officials.
a private one? like GWU or columbia? i would say it IS too much to ask. i respect the independence of those schools, as well as liberty university’s. i would never “force” liberty university officials to pay attention and be fair. i’d continue to laugh at their backward ways, however.
and having seen the video of this wayne state thing…they got the idiot of the room promptly. what else would you want from them? i mean there wasnt even any real effort involved, he just heckled him. if i were dean, and this were brought to my desk, id laugh, and get back to my job.

WSU is a public university. So is Berkeley. So is SFSU. Etc etc etc. You don’t care that on so many campuses, so many leftists are trying to shut down conservatives?
Bringing Liberty into this, and your comments on previous posts, makes me suspect that you’re a lefty troll. I’d like to be proven wrong about that.

This is an excellent example of exactly how it should be handled. This guy may be a stereotypical anti-Zionist, but he made his objection then peacefully left when asked.

Ernesto, I am at a loss to understand your overall position. You acknowledge the thrust of the left’s actions and call it no big deal even though they would overwhelmingly say you are wrong. You point out that the large majority of students are are apathetic and ignore these goings-on, and do so in manner that leaves the impression you are ensconced in the middle of that group.
Yet your comments in this thread and the previous are in effect that the actions of the side which takes the left’s words and actions as seriously as they do and are not apathtic about their purposes, should somehow not respond or do anything about it.
You indicate you are a college student so it’s possible you are truly looking for firm up your understanding of the world, but the devil’s advocate tone of your arguments makes me think there some other motivation stirring you? If it is truly motivated by apathy and it’s cousin “I’m okay, your okay”, then why your obstinacy in arguing for apathy?

You are correct about the distance. Is there anyone else here that has been through Dearborn other than me and Debbie Schlussel?
swami on October 10, 2007 at 3:26 PM
actually, i’m surprised that you’ve waited this long to ask me that. im not offended at all, as I see the way my comments differ with so many in this community. however, our differences on the college issue really do mean little with regards to my views on less taxes, small government, and the free market.
i happen to laugh at liberty quite often, but thats only because i happen to disagree with the whole social conservative movement. i do think its stupid to keep women on a college campus in long skirts and other modest attire, but thats besides the point.
our disagreements, bryan, really do boil down to the college thing. you see a concerted nationwide attack on the conservative movement…and I see hippies and stoners who think that because they listen to rage against the machine they know what socialism is, let alone why they should love it so much.
happy?
ernesto on October 10, 2007 at 3:27 PM
It was handled well by security, but interrupting the event isn’t the right way to handle it on the part of the moonbat. He should have come up with a tough question for the Q&A session if he wanted to try to make a point.

Make rules. Something most kids in this generation never had and don’t seem to understand.
What happened to good manners?
Connie on October 10, 2007 at 3:35 PM
I believe that ernesto is just being a pimple. He is confusing liberty with license. Anarchy is confused with a viable social stucture. Not hard to do in today’s amoral, post-modern society. Per usual, I blame government schools.
But folks like ernie miss the bigger point; that of open forums and civil discourse. Guys like Daniel Pipes don’t simply pop out of the void and appear on campus. He was invited, and probably paid a fee. It is incumbent upon his host, the university, to provide a safe & orderly environment. Period.
locomotivebreath1901 on October 10, 2007 at 3:36 PM

The left is feeling energized right now — like the Visigoths at the gates of Rome. Just wait until it isn’t just a bunch of campus, play-pretend revolutionaries shouting down speakers and they actually have control of all three branches of government. Just something for the principled I-won’t-vote-for-Rudy faction to think about.
Nosferightu on October 10, 2007 at 3:44 PM
for the record, janos, i was referring to liberty university. since when did laughing at fundamentalists become misdirection and obfuscation?

My daughter is active with Stand With Us, one of the groups that brought Daniel Pipes to Wayne State. He also spoke at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. My daughter reports that there were about 125-150 people at Pipes’ WSU talk, about 80% hostile to Pipes. She described the Ann Arbor crowd as much larger, “hundreds”, and was 90% sympathetic to Pipes. One reason for the difference in the crowds is that UofM has a much larger Jewish student population.
I think the mere fact that Pipes was able to speak (he has been prevented from speaking at some campuses) at Wayne, before a mostly hostile crowd, and get his message across is a great success. The speech was covered in the Detroit Free Press, quoting Pipes’ comments about slavery and Islam, putting the Muslim apologists on the defensive.

Don’t know if any of them are here ,but the Republican candidates for President swung by Dearborn last night. The two mentions of Islamofascism couldn’t have warmed the local Muslims’ hearts much.
JiangxiDad on October 10, 2007 at 4:05 PM
They call Pipes a raaaaaacist because he speaks out against islamo-fascism, but who’s more racist than islamo-fascists? They ‘defend’ islamo-fascists, but who will defend these leftist morons when the islamo-fascists take over?
Tony737 on October 10, 2007 at 4:09 PM
The useful idiot from the video got me wondering how bad the anti-Iarael propaganda has gotten at some of these schools. It didn’t take me long to find this atrocity at HuffPo today from a George Washington professor (G.W. of all places!).
Sorry about the partial OT here, but this is surreal. I thought I was reading Der Sturmer. Or perhaps some bad satire, but I’m afraid it’s real.

Hi everyone! This is my first post.
I actually know quite a bit about this incident.
The guy getting kicked out in the video is Mike Staunch. Ironically enough he works at a Zionist owned bookstore near campus called Marwil bookstore. He shows up on campus just to harass students. He’s not even a student.
Before he got kicked out, Mike asked a question in the Q & A, or more accurately made a statement where he didn’t let Pipes respond for many minutes. Staunch called for Israel to be destroyed, defended Palestinian terrorism, and used the term apartheid a bunch of times during his diatribe.
The Dean of Students at Wayne State just stood there, and did nothing. It was a sickening scene, from what I hear.
Here is a good picture of Mike Staunch dressed in military fatigues and holding a fake gun on campus:

Here is a video of Mike, which was featured at LGF some months ago:

I see “concerned faculty” and university presidents throwing their own students under the bus in a race to be politically correct; see, e.g., Duke. I also see universities banning military recruiters while at the same time providing a forum for certain Iranian presidents.
Sadly, the hippies and stoners are in charge.

The nasty group at Wayne State doesn’t just hate Israel, it despises America. See this flyer of theirs passed out to college aged kids.

What I see around the country is the 60’s generation teaching our youth and destroying them at the same time. Most of those kids DON’T have the guts to stand up against what the professors are pushing and the professors know it. I hope and PRAY for this country that WE will begin to turn back to our founding fathers principles and belive that our country was blessed by God and that the so called progressives and liberals and all who hate this country are follwing them lock step to destruction. WE all need to speakout more and not let these types of incedents to keep happening. Whatever people want to think, this country has lost it’s way on the principles and laws by which it was founded and it is sick and disgusting. The next election cycle people who want our country back BEST speak up or they might be on the shortest end of the stick then they think they are already.

Some ‘people’ in the ’60s said they wanted to change the world. Well they are now today’s Washington pols. They’re changing the world alright – for the worse. The point about campus life now is well taken. It might be to late with these leftys, nay, bolsheviks who have utterly taken over 95% of the media and 90% of the colllege campuses. Our borders are open and will remain so. Who the hell knows who is in our wonderful country. On the 50th anniversary of Ayn Rands’ “Atlas Shrugged” I fear that may be what results from the bolsheviks slow takeover of our land. Righteous people will eventually congregate in lands or states that retain our former values rather than live under socialism or something worse. I’m not saying this will happen tomorrow but in the not to distant future. I pray to God I’m really wrong and righteous people will rise up and bring our country back to the greatness it was before Hillary and Willy.
