My nephew graduates from boot camp at the end of the month..Marines. Hey Bryan, how come no story about the amount of black enlistee’s being down..the Boston Globe thought it was an issue yesterday? :) Pam on October 10, 2007 at 9:23 PM

They could have had one more recruit had they not required me to get my ulnar nerve transposed BEFORE acceptance. (Granted, I’d have never made it through Basic pre-op). Well, after school ends there is always next summer to be accepted.

Defense Department statistics show the number of young black enlistees has fallen by more than 58 percent since fiscal year 2000. "The main thing everyone has to realize is that an all-volunteer force is just that," said S. Douglas Smith, public affairs officer for the US Army Recruiting Command. "We try to make sure we communicate to every part of society and let them know what we have to offer. We try to be as open as we can about the risk of service and the benefits of service. After that, it's a matter of people choosing if they want to come in and serve."

My brother and four of his friends joined up for army infantry. They are no slacks either. My brother went in in January and was sent to Iraq on June 6th. He has already received the army commendation medal for valor. (Sorry I had to brag)Many people my age realize what this country is up against and good men are ready to fight. God bless them!

The military is doing this well at recruiting and retention, across the board, with two ongoing wars, the “General Betrayus” idiocy, a hostile press that treats military leadership like it’s either corrupt or stupid, and with miscreants like Jack Murtha and Ted Rall smearing the troops as war criminals.

Bryan, how dare you post this! We’re trying to raise a generation of people to hate the military and part of doing that is to make them believe that the enlisted are leaving in droves! We’ve been telling people that they’ve turned against the war, and these numbers will make us look like a-holes, so please stop spreading around these “facts” and “figures”.

Besides, we’ll just tell people that it’s because Bush’s economy sucks so bad they couldn’t get a job any other way (any of the 8.1 million created in the past 4 years). Oh wait, we botched the joke!

Hopefully we won’t see how the Democratic Communist Party turns the best military in the world into the new draft.

I recently attended a funeral for a Marine officer killed by a sniper in Iraq. There was a great story involved with this Marine’s death that will never appear in the media, but his father got up with tears and a chocked throat and told the story to those attending.

This country continues to produce heroes while the lunatics and traitors fill Congress.

Recruitment numbers are derived from Congressionally-set end strength numbers, so there’s no downward adjustment of goals to meet negative recruiting conditions.

The use of incentives, financial or otherwise, has always been in recruiters’ toolboxes. I would probably guess (totally uninformed guess, mind you) that there has lately been an increase in the use of those tools, but there’s nothing out of bounds about that.

Good for the Army. They have to recruit almost as many as the other 3 services combined. Just for the record Accessions are those that actually make it to Basic Training. I am not sure what the percentage is nowadays of those who enlist but never ship to basic for whatever reason is. It used to be around 10 – 15%.
