Exit question: If the quote about gays was merely mistranslated, how come the line was conspicuously scrubbed entirely from the official Iranian English translation instead of simply being replaced with an accurate translation?

It’s bad when the right-wing becomes unfair this way, because it makes for much weaker arguments. The case that Kerry botched a joke seems quite strong to me. I would have read what Kerry said the way he claimed to have meant in the absence of a debate about it. So when you equate Kerry, the Iranian nutjob, you are actually giving the Iranian nutjob the wiggle room he wants and needs.

I again and again argue for the principle of charity in interpretation: give your opponents the benefit of the doubt so that when you condemn, your condemnations are persuasive. At some level, this just common sense.

I said “Well, here you are, having this conversation with me, and nobody has come to drag you away in chains. Nobody has taken away your freedom of speech to say what you’re sayin’ and you’ve lost no civil rights, BUT what civil rights will you have when the islamo-fascists take over?”
