Exit question: If the quote about gays was merely mistranslated, how come the line was conspicuously scrubbed entirely from the official Iranian English translation instead of simply being replaced with an accurate translation?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because the Mullahs and their midget-ity presidential crony, Amadinnerjacket, are a bunch of inveterate liars.

And not very good at it, either.

Another inconvenient public statement, another convenient “mistranslation” excuse after the fact.

Once again, our enemies channel the Democrats… He might as well have said “I botched a joke!”

RightWinged on October 10, 2007

It's bad when the right-wing becomes unfair this way, because it makes for much weaker arguments. The case that Kerry botched a joke seems quite strong to me. I would have read what Kerry said the way he claimed to have meant in the absence of a debate about it. So when you equate Kerry, the Iranian nutjob, you are actually giving the Iranian nutjob the wiggle room he wants and needs.

I again and again argue for the principle of charity in interpretation: give your opponents the benefit of the doubt so that when you condemn, your condemnations are persuasive. At some level, this just common sense.

A very liberal gay co-worker once told me that he's more afraid of Bush and the Patriot Act than he is of Islamo-fascists like Ahmajihadist and sharia law.

I said "Well, here you are, having this conversation with me, and nobody has come to drag you away in chains. Nobody has taken away your freedom of speech to say what you're sayin' and you've lost no civil rights, BUT what civil rights will you have when the islamo-fascists take over?"

His answer: "Yeah, well, uh, studder, stammer, um, but Bush is just like Hitler!"

What he was saying is that homosexuality in the US and homosexuality in Iran are issues which are as far apart from one another as two cultural universes possibly can be.

Indeed. In the US, anal penetration often results with an "Oh god!" In Iran, it's an "Oh Allah!"

He’s forever threading the needle between the psychopathic Islamist designs on Israel and the sort of squishy brotherhood nonsense that buys him legitimacy with the international community on which he depends.

Summed him up pretty well there.

This is a bit OT but I thought Vincente Fox would say there weren't any gays in Mexico right after he told O'Reilly the HS graduation rate is 94% last night.

...“wiped off the map,” a phrase his apologists insist he never used...

He didn't. He said, "wiped out," which is arguably worse. Might as well get the translations right if all alternative translations are equally bad.
