I have to admit. When I read about what the CIA did in his country, I can understand the animosity. I absolutely disagree with how they manifest their anger though. I also wonder if they wouldn’t have hated us anyway.

Actually, Operation Ajax took place in the early 50’s. And you must be quite young to make a statement like that. 30 (or 50) years is not even enough time for a generation to pass. Circumstances from our youth prejuidice us and we grew up in the lap of luxury. Why is it not possible for them?

There is no way that you are going to convince me that the root cause of tension between Iran and the US is CIA actions back in the 1970s! Too much time has passed for that to be a valid perspective.

The CIA coup goes back even further, though I think you could find other cases of distrust and anger that go back at least as far (e.g., Cuban Americans with Castro, the Chinese with Japan’s aggression in the 1930’s, African-Americans with pre-civil rights racisim, American Conservatives with the New Deal or Great Society).

Not victimhood, but perspective. We need to keep perspective if we are going to fix this.

I agree completely. But perspective also requires context. Soviet agression hasn’t been an issue for almost 20 years, the pre-Islamic regime in Iran has been gone far longer than that. Compare that to Ahmadinejad’s recent statements, attitudes, and actions.

If the leader is acting without the support of the populace, then I would have fewer objections to assassination. The linked article makes me think an assassination would turn a lunatic into a martyr.

Much to dislike about Ahmadinejad, but if we were in a situation where a global power like Russia or China had funded a coup d’etat in the U.S. in the 1950’s and then had recently invaded Canada and Mexico, we would certainly be concerned.

Good analysis, dedalus. I’m more concerned about winning over the Iranian people than the current looney leader. I wonder how much of an obstacle is the failed coup and what hope we have of overcoming that. Even if we subscribed to their victimhood and paid the population off somehow, how determined are they in their hate of “the Great Satan”? In other words, in the big rage pie chart, what percentages are Coup, Jealousy, Religion, and Other?

Discouraging read. Not entirely sure why you sent me there. I meant to say that any prohibition against targeting our enemies’ leaders ought to be removed. If we can target Khadafi, and target bin Laden, I see no reason not to target Ahmadinejad and the mad mullahs before we sacrifice the lives of Americans by sending an army in. If they target our pols. in response, so be it.

Now see… I thought my statement was clear enough. I feel bad that they were used and abused to beat back Soviet aggression BUT their response is totally inappropriate. Not victimhood, but perspective. We need to keep perspective if we are going to fix this.

External military opposition to a pacified Iran cannot be as formidable. Who in the region philosophically supports them?

One consideration should be the reaction of Russia and China, could China dump the dollar and affect U.S. interest rates and the equity market?

The impact was a further coarsening of a German people who would allow their government to implement the Final Solution. The eventual blowback to the German leaders were war crime convictions and a stronger case for the formation of Israel.
