Salman Rushdie and Sam Harris on “the first refugee from Western Europe since the Holocaust”

posted at 3:04 pm on October 9, 2007 by Allahpundit

Linked earlier in Headlines but a tribute this stirring warrants a spot on the front page. Harris is, at the moment, probably America’s best known native-born atheist; the other guy, among his many distinctions, was the recipient last year of a personal apology from Hirsi Ali for ever having wanted to burn his book.

Hirsi Ali may be the first refugee from Western Europe since the Holocaust. As such, she is a unique and indispensable witness to both the strength and weakness of the West: to the splendor of open society and to the boundless energy of its antagonists. She knows the challenges we face in our struggle to contain the misogyny and religious fanaticism of the Muslim world, and she lives with the consequences of our failure each day. There is no one in a better position to remind us that tolerance of intolerance is cowardice.

Having recapitulated the Enlightenment for herself in a few short years, Hirsi Ali has surveyed every inch of the path leading out of the moral and intellectual wasteland that is traditional Islam. She has written two luminous books describing her journey, the most recent of which, “Infidel,” has been an international bestseller for months. It is difficult to exaggerate her courage. As Christopher Caldwell wrote in the New York Times, “Voltaire did not risk, with his every utterance, making a billion enemies who recognized his face and could, via the Internet, share information instantaneously with people who aspired to assassinate him.”…

There is not a person alive more deserving of the freedoms of speech and conscience we take for granted in the West, nor is there anyone making a more courageous effort to defend them.

Follow the link and note their argument about broken promises. The Dutch government, to its eternal credit, helped create Hirsi Ali. Now, by its abdication of responsibility for her welfare, it’s running the risk of destroying her.

during the holocaust the entire state machinery of germany was used in order to slaughter millions of people. I agree that Hirsi Ali needs protection, but i dont buy the comparison.

Is this any different than our own political leaders opening the borders to terrorists in the name of amnesty ?

Its our security they willingly throw away

zane, there are now several nations around the world dedicated to AHA and all of our destruction.Just because their success ratio is not as good at this point as the Germans does not mean it a threat to the free world as a whole.

The jihadis are working on it, they might not have the capacity to engage in that kind of savagery yet, but they’re working on it, and we better be ready to stop them.

It’s stated that she is the first refugee since the holocaust, he really isn’t comparing anything to the holocaust at all.

If the Muslims catch her she’s just as dead as any Jew the National Socialists were after.

The comparison wasn’t made, but I believe it could be valid, anyway. A holocaust begins with the first murder. The death of Van Gogh and Fortyn and now perhaps Hirsi Ali are just steps to the muslims exerting more control and committing more murder. Groups will be targeted next. How safe are Jews and Gays Europe these days? Better off than in 1942, but certainly in their most precarious position since 1945.

I agree Reaganaut, the article doesn’t compare anything to the Holocaust.

I’m especially glad it’s in the LA Times. Maybe the seriousness of this problem will start dawning on some of its readers.

The article isn’t comparing her situation to the holocaust. It is merely saying that there probably has not been one from western Europe since then.

As for the Dutch…so much for courage.

I hate Allah’s infidel-killing peeps. Makes me wanna punch him in the head. Not you, AP, Him.

It is not just her that is being threatened guys.

Ultimately, it is all of us. There is only one way to protect us and that is to expel all Muslims. Their very religion is unconstitutional in that it is absolute in its refusal to be governed by the constitution.

They do not believe in freedom of religion and for us to pretend that we can live with them and protect their religious freedom (which demands they kill us) is folly.

It isn’t a comparsion, it’s just a notice for those who need to be told that war may be coming to Europe once again. Whether or not millions are to be slaughtured may depend on what is happening now, just as the inter-war years led to WWII.

Not to make a comparison, or anything. . . call it an analogy, if you will.

I’m getting that St. Louis feeling. Not that St. Louis, THIS St. Louis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_St._Louis

Governments don’t like people such as Hirsi Ali. They can’t be controlled or owned by anyone else. Therefore I am not shocked that our government is behaving in such a shameful manner towards her. Surely there is a member of Congress willing to write legislation on her behalf. Surely Secret Service protection would be better spent on her than Jimmah and Mr. Hillary.

All I can say is god bless Hirsi Ali and keep her safe from harm.

Today in one of the danish newspapers (24 Timer/24 Hours) I read that the head of the Islamic Religion Society (sorry, poor translation) refused to be in an article because the head of the Jewish Religion Society would also be interviewed. How stupid, how childish, we say but it shows his mentality. Underneath the childishness is a full grown “man” intent on wiping out one group of people just because of their religious beliefs and willing to state it publicly. These same people would think nothing of killing Ali and all the other brave souls who are speaking out to the public about this sociopathic belief system.

Thank you for being here, Hirsi Ali.

The refugees fleeing the short-sighted and superstitious Nazis (Fermi, Einstein, Szilard, etc., etc.) helped us ultimately defeat the Reich.

As Hirsi Ali and others driven out by this new Islamo-Reich (Caliphate Dream) will aid us in its defeat.

Lunatic regimes always drive out their best so that they will look better with no serious comparisons left.

Let the fools give us their brightest, strongest, and most deteremined to resist.

We gain.

They lose.

(Muslims never heard of Br’er Rabbit, I guess.)
