NFL: Cowboys 25, Bills 24

posted at 12:08 am on October 9, 2007 by Bryan

Stunning. The league’s best offense went up against the league’s worst defense and got owned by that defense for most of the game. Tony Romo hurls 5 INTs and coughs up a fumble. The Bills turned two of his INTs into instant TDs. And Bills rookie QB Trent Edwards played a solid game throughout while “the next Brett Favre” looked more like the present Rex Grossman.

But at the end with the Cowboys trailing 24-22 with 18 seconds to go, it came down to an onside kick, a recovery by the Boys, two quick completions by Romo and eventually a 53-yard field goal by rookie kicker Nick Folk. Or, actually, two 53-yarders, one that counted and one that didn’t thanks to a timely timeout by the Bills.

The Cowboys shouldn’t have won this game. But they did, lifting them to 5-0. Good teams win big, and sometimes good teams win ugly, but the bottom line is that they win. The Cowboys square off against one of the league’s other two undefeated teams, the New England Patriots, at Texas Stadium on Sunday. It’ll be a wild one.

I’m a Cowboys fan who lives in New England. Next week is going to be ugly.

i hate the cowboys :(

they really need to work on that timeout rule though. it’s totally not fair a team can call a timeout that close to a snap.

Go Cowboys! You dodged a bullet this week. Don’t bring that mess next week because New England won’t be as easy to overcome.

Ugly….ugly….ugly…

5-0 BABY!

Limerick on October 9, 2007 at 12:14 AM

Letting a team with no timeouts run two plays to the sideline to set up a FG with 0:02 on the clock is flat out retarded. It’s like the Bills purposefully want to make their fans miserable. Next week, they should forgo playing the actual game in favor of just kicking each of their fans in the crotch and sending them home.

That was a wierd wild ugly game. But they didn’t cover the spread and that makes me happy.

Actually, next week is a bye week for the Bills, so we’ll have extra time to savor the misery.

Sooooooo lucky.

Oh well, I get my satisfaction knowing that when the Cowboys will get their butts kicked by the Patriots. The first team they play that has a WINNING record, unlike a certain other team.

Ian…….whatcha been smokin?

Limerick on October 9, 2007 at 12:20 AM

It was exciting, but I have to admit they didn’t deserve it. It was the perfect equation of a top-ranked team rolling into the home town of an underdog with nothing but glory to gain. This early in the season, the underdog almost always wins that match. And the Cowboys played just like a team with their mind on next week’s game. Romo sucked, with the noteable exception that he never caved in and gave up despite his disappointing performance.

The books might say 5-0, but in my mind I’d call it more like 4.5-0.

Blacklake on October 9, 2007 at 12:20 AM

Was horrible. But a win is a win, I suppose.

Asher on October 9, 2007 at 12:21 AM

Football? All I know is the MLB ratings are about to dive… Yankees are done (which I’m sure made Allah’s night), therefore there won’t be a Sox/Yanks matchup for the American League title. Admittedly, Red Sox nation will keep the numbers respectable, but tons more would have been watching the drama if it were Sox/Yanks. And I differ from my fellow Sox fans… They didn’t want to have to face the Yankees. I think that’s a b**ch way of thinking… not to mention, it’s much more exciting to watch that match up, as we’ll likely just mow through the Cleveland Native Americans now.

RightWinged on October 9, 2007 at 12:23 AM

Come on …… no touches by the offense……Romo had a Twilight Zone night…..they shouldn’t have won….refs called a lousy game…..but it is 5-0. Bring on Bradyovich and the Union boys from MA………The South Will Rise Again!

Limerick on October 9, 2007 at 12:23 AM

I knew the Cowboys wouldn’t have their best game tonight.
What was GREAT about it (beside the fact they are now 5-0), was something that should worry all other teams that have to play them this year…. They NEVER gave up! Even when things looked their bleakest, whether it was T-Ro’s ints. or missing the 2 pt. conversion, someone else stood up and made a big play (Sam Hurd getting his hands on the on-side kick).

Great Coaching, Great Players, Great Fans!
My ‘Boys made me sick tonight, but proud. Very proud!

SouthernPride on October 9, 2007 at 12:23 AM

Oh, one other point in the Cowboys’ favor: Their win is certainly sweetened by the fact that ESPN’s commentators were all-but salivating Bills fans. When the Bills had the ball, they were gushing about how great the Bills were. When Dallas had the ball, they were rambling on about how great Bills fans are, injured Bills players in recovery, or pretty much anything they could think of other than the fact that the Cowboys were playing a football game. It was like watching CBS cover a presidential election. A last-minute win like that is about as satisfying as flipping them the bird.

Blacklake on October 9, 2007 at 12:26 AM

….refs called a lousy game…
Limerick on October 9, 2007 at 12:23 AM

Good point. The refs were like Bills fans, too.

Blacklake on October 9, 2007 at 12:27 AM

You know, I have not seen a game that ugly from the cowboys that turned into a win since the “Cardiac Kids” and Rodger Dodger in the late 60′s and early 70′s. I was a youngster then and those guys almost gave me a heart attack. I don’t think my 50 year old heart can stand too many more of these. But still, ugly game, great win.

I am however not feeling real warm and fuzzy about the pats next weekend. If we play like that against them, they score 60 points.

Oh well, HOW BOUT THEM COWBOYS!!!

An amazing comeback…reminds me of the Bears-Cardinals last year. Good teams somehow get the W.

Spirit of 1776 on October 9, 2007 at 12:33 AM

southernpride is right, they never gave up, and that is something else that ties them to those great team of the 60s and 70′s. I even felt that way, with less than a minute down by 8 I said “we can win this thing”.

conservnut on October 9, 2007 at 12:34 AM

All those picks and yet the boy had the gumption to go out there that test his skills some more. The Bills choked. I hope John Kerry and Teddyquiddic watched every frakking minute of it.

“Cardiac Kids” and Rodger Dodger in the late 60’s and early 70’s

The only Cowboy game my Dad ever took me to was in 1979 against thr Redskins(Roger’s last year I believe). The Cowboys came back scored two touchdowns within the last two and a half minutes. My Dad and my friend’s Dad asked us if we wanted to go ahead and leave to beat traffic when the Cowboys were down 34-21 with 5 minutes left. My Friend Mike Geeslin(now insurance commisioner of Texas) and I said we wanted to stay. Then the miracle happened! Being a little kid I believed until the end today I really thought it was over!

I believe I read defensive end Harvey Martin tossed a funeral wreath into the Redskin’s locker room moments after the final gun. Redskins got knocked out of playoffs. You know Theisman was bitching!

Next The dreaded Brady!

Everyone is bashing Jaws here! He is great! The other two, especially Kornheiser are awful! I think ESPN is trying to get Kornheiser to be another Cosell, why I cannot say, seeing as how Howard Cosell was a sheer beating to listen to. But, this IS ESPN.

Gatordoug on October 9, 2007 at 1:05 AM

Shite! The last time I checked on the game there was about 3:35 left in the fourth, I had that quesy feeling that things could change but, C’MON, FIVE interceptions and you win??? What kinda world is that?

I am not sold on the Cowboys yet. Sure it is great to be 5-0, but c’mon. The 5 teams which they have beaten have a combined record of 6-19. Only the Giants have a winning record at 3-2. Let’s see how they do against the Patriots before anointing the Boys the next NFC dynasty. (Since the Seahawks were embarrassed yesterday, thats all the further I’ll take it tonight.)

Having lived in Texas for 30 years and being a dyed in the wool Cowboys fan an ugly win is still a win, but I believe I was close to cardiac arrest the last 18 seconds.

Of course, to Dallas fans, ugly was the name of the game during the Staubach era.

In the owner’s suites, Jerry Jones was having conniption fits until the field goal kicker made not one but two field goals and winning the game.

One can only imagine what their fight back to Dallas will be like.

pocomoco on October 9, 2007 at 1:37 AM

The Patriots have beaten:

Jets 1-4
Chargers 2-3
Bills 1-4
Bengals 1-3
Browns 2-3

The Cowboys have beaten:

New York G 3-1
Miami 0-5
Chicago 2-3
St. Louis 0-5
Buffulo 1-4

The Cowboys have beaten 1 team with a winning record, the Patriots have beaten ZERO teams with a winning record.

The Patriots play in the weakest division in the NFL.

New England 5-0
Buffulo 1-4
NY Jets 1-4
Miami 0-5

Like I said 2 years ago, the Seahawks got to the Superbowl because they played in the NFL’s weakest division that year. That will probably be the case with New England if they go to the Superbowl this year. (So far, AFC South is the strongest division based on wins/losses). In the 2005 season, all the action was in the AFC playoffs.

jaime on October 9, 2007 at 2:17 AM

The Cowboys have beaten 1 team with a winning record, the Patriots have beaten ZERO teams with a winning record.

The Chargers had a winning record when they played them. And don’t forget that the strength of schedule is calculated, and it’s done based on last year’s finish. The higher the finish, the stronger the schedule. The Pats finished 2nd in the AFC.

Pablo on October 9, 2007 at 5:25 AM

And don’t forget that the strength of schedule is calculated, and it’s done based on last year’s finish.

Only two games each year are based on the prior year’s performance, and it’s always done division-to-division. For example, the AFC East’s two games this year are against the AFC West and the AFC South. Since New England won their division last year, they have to play last year’s winner from the AFC West and AFC South this year. (San Diego and Indianapolis). The Jets finished 2nd in the AFC East last year, so they have to play last year’s second place teams from the AFC West and AFC South. (Tennessee and Kansas City). Other than that, New England and NY Jets play all the same teams.

It’ll be a wild one.

Patriots 34, Cowboys 14

Tony Romo played like Sonny Bono last night.

The most overrated QB in the league.

JammieWearingFool on October 9, 2007 at 7:46 AM

The Onside kick is the cheesiest way to win a game. what a stupid friggin rule. My hat’s off to the Bills for playing their hearts out last night and ruling the game, only to lose it because of a stupid play.

Cowboys just suck.

Theologian on October 9, 2007 at 8:13 AM

Romo overrated? Hmmmm….

Four games with over 300 yds. passing.
Until last night, 151% passing rating.
Until last night, only 3 ints.
His team is undefeated.
Yep, the dude’s overrated.

So the kid had a bad game last night, until it counted most.
Besides, with all those interceptions last night, in our book he’s in good company as far as the team record. He joins 2 other “overrated” Cowboy QB’s by the names of Staubach & Aikman.

Jealousy is so ugly.

SouthernPride on October 9, 2007 at 8:44 AM

I hate the Cowboys, but it seems they are inevitable to be the losing Super Bowl representative from the NFC.

Brady should eat up that secondary next week.

awake on October 9, 2007 at 8:47 AM

To all you Boys haters:

Y’all are just jealous because you’ve never been able to say you root for a team so good THEY can’t even beat themselves.

HAH!

This was Dallas’ gut check. Every team has one or two every year. It shows you the mettle of a team. I think the Boys did a damn good job of showing everyone just how much they have.

Another example of the closeness of this team is how everyone rallied around Romo and went over to encourage him when he went and sat alone on the bench. They believed in him no matter how bad it got.

Next week is the true test. As a faithful fan for over 40 years I’m feeling good about it. I don’t think they’re going to play that badly two weeks in a row.

Kowboy on October 9, 2007 at 9:06 AM

The Bears beat the Packers, so nothing else mattered in the football world; I went to bed in the third quarter. The Cowboys are playing great, but this was a little closer to their level, as time will show.

I’m a Cowboys fan who lives in New England. Next week is going to be ugly.

You’re right, the Pats are several dimensions better than those Cowgirls on the sidelines with the pom-poms. Not in looks though. If they watched tonight’s game they’re probably wishing they were playing them next week instead. ANY team that can win in spite of 6 turnovers would scare me.

Kowboy on October 9, 2007 at 9:46 AM

Sue on October 9, 2007 at 9:43 AM

He’s done that throughout his career. He usually makes up for it though. I admit I wasn’t thrilled when they signed him (The star thing don’t you know) But he’s really turned into a team player the past couple of years. He’s not the “ME ME ME” guy he used to be. He rallied behind Romo instead of yelling and screaming like he used to. I have to admit I’ve gained quite a bit of respect for him this year.

Kowboy on October 9, 2007 at 9:49 AM

Sue on October 9, 2007 at 9:40 AM

Exactly. After this ugly game and thinking about it today, I thought we rallied well under the circumstances. Granted the last 30 seconds were sureal, but thats the NFL for you. I mean come on, 5 INT with two touchdowns off them and a fumble? A kick off return touchdown? On offside kick and two 52 yard field goals back to back (granted one didn’t count)? This game had everything in it and everthing was thrown at the Boys and yet they STILL won! Football Gods loved the Boys yesterday. Thats all I can say.

Romo never gave up. I don’t know how the hell he handled the pressure, but he did it. He’s got balls of steel. As soon as he can afford it he better take the whole team out to Texas de Brazil for saving his ass.

FireFly on October 9, 2007 at 10:08 AM

How ’bout them Cowboys! It’s incredible they pulled this off!

CP on October 9, 2007 at 10:11 AM

Good teams win when the opportunities to win present themselves. Dallas is a good team, capitalized on the opportunity to win, and executed. They deserved to win, the four INTs notwithstanding (Romo, OTOH, deserved to lose that game). Even though the Bills played a great game, they weren’t quite good enough to completely hold back a better team. It may be a failure to win on the Bills part, but on the whole they certainly outplayed the Cowboys. Case in point, the Monday Night game in 2003 between the Colts and Buccaneers. Colts were outplayed for much of the game, and were down 18 points with just under 4:00 to go. Usually that spells defeat, but the Colts found a way to come back and tie the game, then win in OT.

Buffalo should have nothing to be ashamed of, they played their Super Bowl in front of the whole country, and came oh-so close. Anyway, can’t wait for my Colts to play NE in November! They have to come here now, instead of us going to them.

Even though the Bills played a great game,
No they didn’t. Dallas played a horrible game. The offense scored 3 points. Take away all the Dallas mistakes and Buffalo has 3 points. 10 if you give them the runback touchdown.

Sure the Dallas offense played badly. But when the Bills defense had the opportunities served up to them, they capitalized on them, just like the Cowboys did when they recovered the onside kick. Really what lost the game for the Bills was the last series their offense ran, which left Dallas time to march down the field and score. All it would have taken then was a first down to help them run the clock down.

geekrunner on October 9, 2007 at 10:58 AM

Really what lost the game was their offense produced 3 points.

Sue on October 9, 2007 at 11:01 AM

I’ve e-mailed Kerry and Teddyquiddic to ask for their over-under on Sunday’s game.

Limerick on October 9, 2007 at 11:03 AM

Objectively, conservatives should be for Dallas. Dallas is from a politically conservative state, which means that when Dallas wins, a higher proportions of conservative voters than liberal ones are made happy. The Patriots and the Bills are from overwhelmingly liberal states. That means that when they win, a higher proportion of liberal voters are made happy.

Do you really want liberal voters to be happy? Why not go vote for Hillary? I daresay rooting against Dallas is little different. (Maybe we could get Minneapolis to change the name of their franchise from “Vikings” to “Jihadis,” so all the Cowboys haters could start appeasing a new demographic!)

Blacklake on October 9, 2007 at 11:19 AM

Shocked indeed. I stopped watching after the near back-to-back interceptions that left the ball in Buffalo’s hands lat in Q 4.

I’ve always liked the Pokes, since so many of my liberal friends in the DC area are rabid Washington fans. If the Cowboys beat New England, DC is going to become unhinged with loathing.

Haha – it’s not his job to get hit, that why we have Benjamin Watson. He’s in another league right now.

It’s too bad the Cowboys are coming off a tough game and a short week, I wanted them at full strength when we dismantle them.

The outcome isn’t that surprising, I mean the Bills are in the AFC and the Cowboys are still in the NFC, right?

here’s another interesting little fact for you poor Bills fans. this is the second time this season that Buffalo has led throughout the entire 60 mins. of a game and lost.

Objectively, conservatives should be for Dallas. Dallas is from a politically conservative state, which means that when Dallas wins, a higher proportions of conservative voters than liberal ones are made happy. The Patriots and the Bills are from overwhelmingly liberal states. That means that when they win, a higher proportion of liberal voters are made happy…

Excellent observation Blacklake!

Our 2 greatest QBs (Staubach & Aikman) are both Conservatives. Wonder if T-Ro is? hmmmm….
I’ll give him a buzz and ask ;)

By the second half on Sunday, the stands in Texas will look like the stands did in Denver this past Sunday. MT

Pats are favored by 4 1/2 this morning. The odds will be even on Sunday.

Oh…and Wade…..5-0 or 0-5 Texas stadium is always packed.

I have never been able to stomach Dallas!! I thought the reason why there is no roof over the stadiun is so they can fit all the egos from Dallas when they take the field. My favorite team is anyone playing against Dallas!! Actually’

We have isolated the liberals to city of Dallas (139/236). But since the boys actually play in Irving (45/236), I’ll give you that one.

I grew up in Irving, we held our HS Graduation at a then-new Texas Stadium and I HATE the Cowboys. I am with ChrisIansNana…GO PACKERS!!!

Maybe at kickoff time. What will it look like after the spanking the Pats give them in the first half? Oh, and full of what?
