Video: Jim Ogonowski’s unusual new ad

He’s running in the special election next Tuesday for the open seat in Massachusetts’s Fifth District that was vacated when Marty Meehan resigned. His opponent is Paul Tsongas’s widow, who has a huge advantage in name recognition — although maybe not for long once this starts airing. The ad itself is weak on substance but that’s less important with a week to go than simply raising public awareness that this guy’s in the race. Which this does. In spades.
I’ve heard some grumbling today about Hillary using 9/11 workers in her new health-care ad and how that conflicts with previous rhetoric about exploiting that day for political gain. That only applies in a general sense, though; if you’ve got a personal connection to the attack and it bears on your character and leadership ability, it’s perfectly fair to mention it. Lord knows, Rudy wouldn’t have a campaign without it. Same goes for this guy.
Incidentally, he’s pro-choice and thinks the war was a mistake. Still more conservative than Mrs. Tsongas, though, I’m sure. Exit question curiosity: John Ogonowski was the pilot on American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to crash into the Towers. The photo here shows United Flight 175. Er, why?

Reprehensible.

Geez – I live in Massachusetts, although not Meehan’s district, but I’ve never heard Jim Ogonowski’s name mentioned in connection with this race. It has been all Nikki Tsongas — all of the local Dem glitterati have come out to support her.

Don’t worry, D2Boston. There are plenty of ‘Ogonowski for Congress’ lawn signs out here. Mrs fluffy and I will do our part next Tuesday.

btw, o/t… but why has Michelle not been on the Factor lately, and in her place we’ve seen Monica Crowley? I like Crowley, but I’m just curious what happened to to “Monday’s with Kirsten and Michelle”?

It’s a good fit with his other commercials.

I didn’t think Paul Tsongas was qualified to be a Senator and his wife is definitely not qualified to be a congress critter. She is doing the same thing anyone with the name “Kennedy” does around here. Uses her locally famous name in the hopes of winning an election.
Our tool of a Governor didn’t invite Ogonowski for the 6th anniversary of 9-11, and he claims it was an “oversight” but Tsongas was invited. Hmmmm. The event was for family members of those lost on 9-11.
I’m stuck living in Tierney’s district and the foolish voters here didn’t elect a retired Navy pilot in November.

The only footage of Flight 11 crashing is owned by the Naudet brothers. Maybe they wouldn’t sell it for a political ad?
SWLiP on October 8, 2007 at 10:19 PM
Is it possible that the footage for Flight 11 is not as good, as the one for Flight 175 was filmed live?
I worked with Tom McGuinness’ wife for 10 years in S. Calif., in a field totally unrelated to her current activities. They’d moved back to Boston, their home state, the year before that fateful day. His throat was cut while he went out to help the attendants who were first attacked. Before AA he was a Navy pilot.

“stepped up to the bat?”
I think America is completely confused about our idioms. It’s stepped up to the plate, of course. At work I’ve heard:
“That’s the straw in the camel’s back”
“They expect us to jump through buildings”
and my favorite:
“That’s all a bridge under troubled waters”

Maybe with American Airlines flight 11’s
prior impact footage was just to emotional,
so they used United Airlines 175 instead?
canopfor on October 8, 2007 at 10:27 PM
I didn’t want to link but googling for “footage of flight 11″ brings up nothing but trutherism.
Entelechy on October 8, 2007 at 10:29 PM
I think that a more likely explanation is that the shot of Flight 175 is just more iconic — you have the plane and the towers in one composition.

Tsongas is running on name recognition and little else. In the primary her challengers complained of national money corrupting what should be a local race.

I’m not sure why he picked the other flight, maybe the maker of the ad decided that on some sort of visual or…for lack of a better word, artistic reasons? I’m not sure how smart it was to do this, I guess it will stir up things and get some publicity.
The curiousity is killing me, I gotta know too.

way ot: what’s with the pron ads in the sidebar?
at malkins too, is PJM getting desperate for ads?

EXIT QUESTION: I think SWLiP got it right – there’s almost no footage of AA 11 going into WTC 1. But the images of UA 175 zeroing in on Tower 2 are seared into our memories, instant recognition.
pavruch on October 8, 2007 at 11:20 PM
AP-
The only image of flight 11 hitting the first tower is at an oblique, low angle (I think from the French documentary on NYC firefighters which was being shot that day), so this image is more “understandable”, and was one shown live on 9/11, while the flight 11 footage didn’t appear until later.
“…he thinks the war was a mistake.”
What a daring and original thinker.

Allah,
No where in your narrative or in the YouTube clip tells us of a party affiliation, Democrat or Republican. Some people, myself included, would like this information.
At least, Allah, please don’t be like the Associated Press.

Mooseman — I recall hearing about the oversight by that darling Deval Patrick… not inviting Ogonowski, but inviting Nikki Tsongas. Perhaps it was really because Ogonowski would have dropped him when he uttered his now infamous “9-11 represented a failure for humans to understand one another” pronouncement. What a tool…

“That’s dumber than a screen door on a battleship!”
“I bet that idea will go over like Led Zepplin.”
“He pulled a complete 360 on me!”
fusionaddict on October 9, 2007 at 2:51 AM
But they’d sell it to the Twoofers??
Viper1 on October 9, 2007 at 6:27 AM
In other news, the Yankees(blek!!) lost!!!
Viper1 on October 9, 2007 at 6:28 AM
Tsongas is a Dem. Ogonowski is a Republican.
davod on October 9, 2007 at 6:42 AM
Gross; what does his supporting his sister-in-law have to do with anything?
As for Tsongas and her ilk, the recent pattern of electing the brainless, talentless wives of former politicians, often to their deceased or jailed or impeached husband’s former position is a third-world sort of political move.
Welcome to the tin pot electorates of Missouri, New York, and Massachussetts.

You’ve probably been infected with adware (Zango most likely). It substitutes regular ads with racy ones.
I had the same problem the other day, I kept seeing Shakira’s (admittedly nice) bikinied bottom and some sweaty movie scene. I followed the instructions on this page and got rid of it. Hope this helps.
angryoldfatman on October 9, 2007 at 9:35 AM
I won’t bet against you on that one. Even Tommy Taxes was upset over that one. It is sickening that the voters of this state elected a motivational speaker as Governor. No details on anything. I was NH and VT this weekend, and NH is looking better and better. Can we do a recall election on this tool?
