Video: It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
posted at 10:46 pm on October 5, 2007 by Allahpundit
When A-Rod is smelling
And Steinbrenner’s yelling
And Jeter’s in teeeeears
It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
I’m tempting fate by celebrating before the series is clinched but the big A’s getting all kinds of good vibrations about a glorious sweep — at Yankee Stadium — on Sunday. I may go out and buy a broom especially for the occasion. They haven’t had a donut hung on them in the postseason since 1980, when George Brett went upper deck on Goose Gossage in the Bronx to seal Game Three of the ALCS. Your plot lines for the weekend: Can the Tribe handle the pressure? Will the Rocket have one last big-game hurrah before he rides off into the sunset? Are we about to see A-Rod cement his reputation as the biggest choke artist in postseason history? 0-for-6 for the series thus far with three strikeouts tonight, including a huge whiff with a man on to end the ninth. That’s if you’re keeping score at home. Which I am.
I’m not saying that that plague of mini-locusts that descended in the eighth inning made me believe in God. But I’m not saying that it didn’t, either. Click the image to rejoice.

God I cannot stand the Yankees and their fans. It would actually have been good for the Yanks had they not made the playoffs because it might have convinced them to cut salary and go with young players instead of aging former NL retreads such as Bobby Abreu.

If you are a true Yankee Hater, you might want to check this site for official gear. They don’t have a lot of photos of their products though. I saw a hat at the Seahawks game. It looks like a Yankees hat, but the logo was a super imposed YH in the Yankee script.
If you don’t want to buy gear, a page at YH.com has some funny anti-Yankee photoshops. Warning: they are pretty crude with some f-bombs.

Pablo on October 6, 2007 at 12:55 AM
Please that is old news.
I will never understand why that happened. Bellicheck did not need to do that (and no one can show if he ever did it prior) or after the game when he got busted.
Feel free to use that as an excuse for why your team lost if it makes you feel better.
That was over a couple of weeks ago.
F15Mech on October 6, 2007 at 1:00 AM
Who are the Yankees?
Seriously, I laughed out loud when I heard these bums lost. Good riddance.
jaleach on October 6, 2007 at 1:13 AM
Oh please. Old news? How many seasons had Bellichick been stealing signs? How much easier do you think Brady had it when he knew defesive formations before the plays started? Since the NFL did the Patriots a favor by destroying their tapes, no one will know how much of an advantage the Pats had. It’s too easy to say that they are a good team and would have succeeded without the help. All we know is they were cheating during the same time that they were racking up wins. That is pretty incriminating.
BTW, the Patriots haven’t played the Seahawks recently, so I don’t have a personal beef about this.
Mallard T. Drake on October 6, 2007 at 1:15 AM
I don’t know about you anymore, Allah. You are one giant ball of confusion. Let’s look at the stats:

-You don’t like Giuliani.
-You hate the Yankees.
Next you’re going to tell me you don’t take the subway to work.
WHO THE HELL ARE YOU MAN!
Vincenzo on October 6, 2007 at 1:28 AM
Really? In that case show me what you know…
Show me all Pats tapes (home video and or tv)tapes that show that the Pats cheated in prior seasons.
Show me one tape that show the Pats cheating in the last couple of games.
If you can do that then I will look at your evidence.
If you can show me (or the NFL) that the Pats cheated before/after the time they got busted then go for it.
I am pretty sure all of the other teams the Pats have played have been working on this BTW.
Your lack of evidence does not help your claim. It actually does nothing to help you and helps the Pats.
F15Mech on October 6, 2007 at 1:28 AM
Holy s***, did anyone catch Manny’s walk off?! That was AWESOME! No love for the Red Sox, AP?

conservnut,
I’m a die hard Astros fan too but I don’t fault The Rocket or Andy Pettitte for bolting. The Astros organization isn’t committed to winning. As a matter of fact, it’s a complete joke. Any front office that would even contemplate a starting line-up consisting of Chris Burke (.229), Adam Everett (.232), and Brad Ausmus (.235) should resign itself to the Central Division cellar.
Until “Uncle Awshucks” McClane stops hiring bootlickers and gets some competent baseball people (and let’s them do their jobs), things probably won’t change much. The recent hiring of Ed Wade as General Manager doesn’t inspire much confidence either.
Mike Honcho on October 6, 2007 at 1:51 AM
Yep – I’ve got that hat.
nailinmyeye on October 6, 2007 at 2:07 AM
I guess you missed where I wrote:
The league is protecting the Pats and trying to avoid a big scandal during the season. What we know is that the Patriots were videotaping others teams signs for at least two seasons, in violation of league rules. They had thier linemen mic-ed to pick up signals at the line of scrimmage, against league rules. Plain and simple, they cheated. Now at the same time they were one of the winningest teams in the NFL. That is some strong circumstantial evidence.
Sure the Patriots are a good team. But who knows: one or two plays a game knowing where there will be a hole in the other team’s defensive secondary can be the difference to making them a consistently great team.
But, there is no denying they cheated. The NFL doesn’t take draft picks away from a team without cause.
Mallard T. Drake on October 6, 2007 at 2:22 AM
Awesome! I’ve seen my fill of the Indians getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Yankees. Maybe this year, maybe this year.

sabbott on October 6, 2007 at 5:13 AM
Tell me, oh Sunday-Night-Football Truther, if the Patriots were really cheating every game for the last two seasons, why oh why would it get brought up during the first game of the season with the Jets?
Even if they did know the plays, please explain to me how they keep Brady so well protected on nearly every play? Does Brady have a hologram projecter in that helmet so he can show a screen of the opponent’s exact play to every player?
And wouldn’t you think if the other teams caught on to the Patriots they would fake a play and choose another. Seriously MTD, thats some heavy Truthering going on there.
BKennedy on October 6, 2007 at 7:05 AM
That was the Drew Carey Show’s theme song. Which of course reminds me of a Drew Carey story at Fenway Park in Boston several years ago. Drew Carey in the stands watching his beloved Indians. Red Sox fans sitting behind him started singing “Cleveland Sucks…Cleveland Sucks” in tune of course to Carey’s show. Carey reacted badly and either began cursing them and taking a swing at someone. It wound up as footage on This Week in Baseball. No one was arrested or hurt.

JammieWearingFool on October 6, 2007 at 8:02 AM
Even though I’m a Red Sox fan and am thus biologically driven to despise the Evil Empire, I’d always had a lot of respect for A-Rod…until the 2004 ALCS when he hacked the ball out of the pitcher’s hand (Bronson Arroyo, I think) when he was about to be tagged out at first base.

Also A-Rod’s bush league call of “mine” in Toronto this year when he was heading to 3rd base on a 2 out pop up to the infield. What about his class wife wearing a “**** you” on the back of her shirt?

drjohn on October 6, 2007 at 9:41 AM
Come back down now . . . New England got caught. That’s all that happened. Isn’t it curious how little outrage was created among the other teams? Hmmmm. It’s like the performance enhancing drug investigations in MLB. Most of the outrage was not from the athletes. The “cheating” may be more widespread than we know, or what New England did, while on the surface was wrong, would have little impact on the other teams performances.

The only thing worse than a Noo Yawk Yankees fan is a Bahstan Red Sawks fan. God, how I hate both of those teams and the fact that ESPN spends 90% of their baseball coverage talking about them. If by some miracle they face each other in the ALCS I think I’ll root for nuclear war. It’s like choosing between Hillary or Bill as to which is the worst Clinton.
Frank Nitti on October 6, 2007 at 11:41 AM
As I have said in two comments now, the NFL destroyed the tapes so we won’t know to what extent the Pats were relying on stolen signals to use to their advantage. But their video cameraman was on the sidelines for at least two seasons. Some of the other teams knew what was going on. In Chicago, the Bears had the video guy removed from the field to protect their team.
Can you honestly say that the NFL reviewed the tapes and files and said ‘oh there’s nothing here; let’s take away their first round draft pick’? That is an unprecedented move for an “misdemeanor” offense.
So let’s say Brady’s in the huddle and he had information that the defense is planning a safety blitz. They call a play that has a receiver’s route in the area vacated by the safety. Brady doesn’t need a lot of time in the face of the blitz; his first read is to that location.
If this sign stealing practice goes on for a few seasons, Bellichick has a nice file of signs for each team. Going into the game, they already are at an advantage over the other team.
Nobody has explained why, if the Patriots are such a powerhouse of a team, Bellichick needed to employ such tactics. How much sense does it make to steal signs and then not use the information because ‘we’re so good, we don’t need it.’
Mallard T. Drake on October 6, 2007 at 12:04 PM
You may be right that the practice is more widespread than the NFL will let on. Perhaps the Patriots were just the most blatant abusers, so they took the fall. Since the NFL is sitting on the ‘investigation,’ we may never know.
The NFL is riding high right now. The last thing the owners want is a league-wide scandal that drives fans away. Since the owners share in TV and merchandise revenue, they don’t want any hint of funny business to stop the money stream.
Either the problem is league-wide and they are quashing it before it gets out of hand, or it is a few teams and the owners are handling it in-house and telling the Patriots to knock it off or else.

The Yaaaaankeeeees Looose
I,ve always been a Yankee hater since the days that they kept beating my Royals in the 70′s. My opinion is that Steinbrener has forever ruined baseball for the small market teams with his big money and I relish the thought that the more money he spends to win another title, the more the Yankees choke. Oh by the way, how many people (other than Yankee fans) actually watched that lame mini-series on ESPN about the 70′s Yankees?

nailinmyeye on October 6, 2007 at 1:11 PM
It’s unfortunate that so many knowledgeable and enthusiastic baseball fans think that there are teams in only three cities. I realize that NYC, Boston and Chicago are the traditional major markets in the United States, but I think the sports media pays way to much attention to the teams in these towns. It’s always about what the Yankees and Red Sox are doing with the leitmotif of the Cubs perennial fruitless quest for the golden ring. In those years when the Mets are competitive, like this year, there is more attention paid to them than equally or more successful teams in other cities.
If Cleveland goes on to win a third game against the Yankees, more attention will be paid by the national sports media to the failure of the Yankees in ’06 and ’07, than to the successes of the Tigers and Indians.
rokemronnie on October 6, 2007 at 1:18 PM
Though I do admit to a personal animus against the Yankees. In 1961, when I was a little boy discovering baseball, the Tigers won 101 games, normally enough to win a pennant in pre-playoff MLB. They had a pretty good team with Norm Cash winning the batting title, Hall of Famer Al Kaline, and lefty Frank Lary, who so mastered the Yankee’s powerful batting lineup that he was nicknamed The Yankee Killer. In head to head competition, I think the Yankees (with Maris, Mantle, Ford etc.) just slightly had the advantage 10-8. But New York won a remarkable 109 games that year, and the Tigers had to settle for second place.
So when the Yankees stumble in the post season, it’s just ducky with me. Last year was delicious.
rokemronnie on October 6, 2007 at 1:27 PM
Roughly three times a year I go to liberal Massachusetts for a weekend party. Coincidentally the Yankees are almost always playing the Red Sox that weekend. Not once did I hear any Yankees put down; they just cheered their team on. Even when the Red Sox won the World Series did they not rub it in.
Civility, what a concept.
Go Yankees!
hadsil on October 6, 2007 at 1:57 PM
The Indians have this series pretty much wrapped up…but then again, the Mets had the NL East wrapped up with 16 games to go.
All you Yankee haters might want to listen to the eternal wisdom of Winston Wolf before definitively burying them. Then again, this isn’t the first time the Empire has been left for dead this year.
P.S…. Red Sox swallow.
