Matthews: I totally pwn3d Jon Stewart! Also, Cheney is a criminal

posted at 5:48 pm on October 5, 2007 by Allahpundit

If sputtering after being insulted for five minutes constitutes pwnage these days, then touche. Even more annoying than Matthews is the opportunity this gave all the Stewart fanboys to scoff theatrically and remind us what a rhetorical gladiator their man is. “Remember the time he went off on Tucker Carlson? Brilliant!” Yeah, what was brilliant about that was his point that shows like Crossfire reduce political debate to a cheap game of jousting soundbites and partisan point-scoring. Which, more often than not, is exactly what the interview segment on Stewart’s own show amounts to, and even more so on Colbert’s. Brilliant.

As for the rest of it, the funniest thing about it is that the left has convinced itself, quite seriously, that Chris Matthews is a conservative.

In front of an audience that included such notables as Alan Greenspan, Rep. Patrick Kennedy and Sen. Ted Kennedy, Matthews began his remarks by declaring that he wanted to “make some news” and he certainly didn’t disappoint. After praising the drafters of the First Amendment for allowing him to make a living, he outlined what he said was the fundamental difference between the Bush and Clinton administrations.

The Clinton camp, he said, never put pressure on his bosses to silence him.

“Not so this crowd,” he added, explaining that Bush White House officials — especially those from Vice President Cheney’s office — called MSNBC brass to complain about the content of his show and attempted to influence its editorial content. “They will not silence me!” Matthews declared.

“They’ve finally been caught in their criminality,” Matthews continued, although he did not specify the exact criminal behavior to which he referred. He then drew an obvious Bush-Nixon parallel by saying, “Spiro Agnew was not an American hero.”

If it were anyone else I’d blame the booze, but this sounds just like him, doesn’t it? Apparently he mumbled something else about it on Hardball this afternoon but the transcript’s not available yet. Exit question: What a pair of champs those Clintons are, never trying to silence anyone, huh?

Didn’t Matthews work for Carter at one time? That’s about as far from conservative as you can get.

Yeah. And the movie “The Path to 9/11″ too.

Exemplary, really.

“They will not silence me!” Matthews declared.

That’s right, Chris, they won’t.

They will just let the lousy ratings that shows like yours and Obie get on MSNBC do it for them.

We must be watching different shows. The Matthews interview was unusual because Stewart’s style is usually not in-your-face. To compare his interview style to Novak, Press, Hannity, Bechel, et al. seems at odds with the all-to-many episodes of Crossfire and TDS I’ve seen. Perhaps there is a bit of Kinsley in Stewart, but I don’t think that is what you were going for.

The Matthews interview was unusual because Stewart’s style is usually not in-your-face.

The point isn’t that he’s “in your face,” the point is that every time there’s a conservative on the audience waits with bated breath for the one-liners that are going to humiliate his opponent. They’re not even there to laugh; they’re there to applaud the smiting of the right-wing dragon, however politely it’s done. It’s bloodsport, the same type of crap that Crossfire trafficked in.

So if Chrissy Matthews speaks on a television show that nobody watches, does he make a sound?

Hollowpoint on October 5, 2007 at 6:19 PM

Matthews has a lot of empty space between his ears. Pathetic to think his “how to live life” book uses Mr. Bill’s magic fornication tricks for inspiration.

I have to say, the WH has done a pretty crappy job silencing Matthews. He spits all kinds of wild man Bush hate on a second by second basis. And the bit about winning the Daily Show debate — he sounds about as delusional as Dan Rather.

Allah, you should put up an edited clip of him grimacing to someone on set during the Laura Ingraham interview…it’s priceless.

Allahpundit on October 5, 2007 at 6:55 PM

Why would the Republican candidates attend a debate moderated by this delusional Ahole.

Mathews in a nutshell, from his book as reviewed by Jon Stewart — lie, cheat, steal, and lie some more to win. Also life’s rule for the Hillary ‘Matters’ Clinton crime family.

tarpon on October 5, 2007 at 7:10 PM

Jon Stewart, you bad ole puddy tat.

ZK on October 5, 2007 at 7:15 PM

Matthews considers phone calls complaining about his programming as an attempt to “silence” him? How can anyone so thin skinned even have a career as a journalist? Arent they supposed to ask tough questions that might ruffle some feathers? That is his job and he is saying he cant do it. It never even occurs to him that not recieving complaints from the Clinton White House might mean he was not adequetly doing his job asking tough questions.

Resolute on October 5, 2007 at 7:22 PM

It’s bloodsport, the same type of crap that Crossfire trafficked in.

I haven’t really thought about Stewart’s studio audience, though I do drive by them waiting in line on 11th Avenue from time-to-time. They are young New Yorkers who can get away from work in the afternoon, and their politics are undoubtedly hostile to Conservatives.

I’d point out interviews with Mike Huckabee, Andy Card, George Tenet, Lt. John Nagel, Michael Barrone, Lt. Col. Kevin Robbins. Stewart often expresses skepticism and usually employs sarcasm; however, the Crossfire-style trafficked more in the realm of condemnation. Even guests who Stewart gives a hard time to, like Stephen Hayes, he ultimately treats with a large measure of good will.

dedalus on October 5, 2007 at 7:26 PM

Matthews needs to lay off the shrooms. He’s paranoid.

I could never get through more than 5 minutes of Stewert’s show, and ditto for Bill Maher. I get disgusted pretty quickly with Liberal condescension. I did enjoy watching the Rosie Posts here though. Rosie always delivers Pathetic Gold.

Matthews is still smoking dope! Listen to his stupid laugh and look at his beady eyes. How anyone takes him seriously is beyond me. He talks over people and is the WORST interviewer ever. More curious is that the Republicans are letting him moderate their next Debate. Can you imagine the questions??

WOW!

iam7545 on October 5, 2007 at 9:50 PM

Matthews is so clueless and insecure he’s to stupid to accept the slamming that Stewart gave him.

The only reason Matthews got anywhere is because Stewart felt sorry for him (or guilty).
Stewart nailed Chris in every area that Chris so richly deserves.

Matthews is a Kindergartener and Stewart is a post grad.

Chris should be grateful for the free education.

As for the rest of it, the funniest thing about it is that the left has convinced itself, quite seriously, that Chris Matthews is a conservative.

Chris did write Kennedy and Nixon which was an excellent book, very empathetic to Nixon, and critical of the far left, so perhaps that has something to do with it. Too bad that Matthews has caught Bush-Cheney Derangement Syndrome.

Also, the irony of him complaining to an audience of Dems about attempts to silence corporate media hosts the same week that Harry Reid and 40 other Senators tried to get Clear Channel to silence Rush, not to mention ongoing attempts to shut him down at Armed Forces Radio cannot be overstated.

On another note, Media Matters is asking the Stalinist parrots to take action against Chris Matthews because he and others are extolling Mitt’s “well-sculpted” handsomeness.

Contact Chris Matthews and MSNBC and squawk about this outrage!

“They will not silence me!” Matthews declared.”

Psst Chrisy, nobody has to silence you, because nobody listens. Your audience and ratings, along with Keith Olbermann are in the bottom of the barrel. Liberal A$$HOLES like you have a neat way of silencing themselves. One has to wonder why MSNBC wastes good cash on such louses!

byteshredder on October 6, 2007 at 12:46 PM

Although Matthews latest antics will probably be overcome by events (possibly by 4:30 Eastern time today – new break in the OJ case)…

Every time some kerfuffle surrounding this clown comes up, I really, really wish someone would finally produce a copy of NBC/MSNBC cutting to Matthews immediately following Gore’s concession speech, with him sitting there, tears streaming down his face, blubbering like a little kid.

Never been able to take the guy seriously since then. Probably evoke a few compassionate head tilts from the usual suspects, still, a very illuminating bit of footage…(no I don’t have it, can’t find it, but I did see it happen live)
