NYT: Fred a big fat flop on the campaign trail

posted at 1:23 pm on October 4, 2007 by Allahpundit

Yeah, yeah, it’s the Times, but look: is this guy actually asking people for pity applause?

Twenty-four minutes after he began speaking in a small restaurant the other day, Fred Thompson brought his remarks to a close with a nod of his head and an expression of thanks to Iowans for allowing him to “give my thoughts about some things.”

Then he stood face to a face with a silent audience.

“Can I have a round of applause?” Mr. Thompson said, drawing a rustle of clapping and some laughter.

“Well, I had to drag that out of you,” he said.

Excruciating. AmSpec editor Quin Hillyer isn’t real thrilled either with one of Fred’s recorded campaign phone messages: “[T]he overall effect was virtually an insult to my intelligence. A drunk Hollywood hack writing for a third-rate sitcom could have typed out those exact same words while in the midst of delirium tremens, as an intentional parody of what a hack conservative politician sounds like. Hacks know how to sound like hacks under almost any circumstance.” Too many platitudes, not enough policy meat on the bone — the same problem that marred his rebuttal to Hillary’s health care plan. Hillyer warns him to “stop coasting,” but maybe he’s not coasting. Maybe he’s just a lightweight. I guess we’ll see at the debate.

Further to that last point, here’s an amusing bit of animation from a lefty outfit called HeadAState. It’s the usual stuff but the punchline at the end is worth it.

Blowback

More likely Danny Bonaduce for tossing Jonny Fairplay over his shoulder. That or some poor grandmother who is just trying to raise her sons kids after he died in Iraq.

Unlike Fred, who always represented the rich and powerful, like asbestos manufacturers, etc. I always represent the little guy against the big guy.

Sure…What ever you say there bub. Excuse me if I require a willing suspension of disbelief in order to take anything you say seriously.

Jeez Louise, did I just tune in to the DKos?

Of COURSE you expect this kind of a hit from the NYT.

Gotta tell you, AP, I’m a little miffed with you right now. I provided you a link to a positive story on Fred and all the other candidates either yesterday or the day before in your tips email. You’d rather take the side of the liberal NYT than to defend a conservative. This blog is looking more and more and more like an anti-Fred hate site.

I’m always happy to debate someone on an issue. But when all the deck is stacked and all the cards are marked, what’s the point?

)))))))) PAGING THE FRED SHILLS: (((((((((((

Thanks for the laughs. I knew you wouldn’t fail me!

Now are you going to kick my ass for “I told ya so” when last night I screamed: “Nobody (saw this headline)?”

I know the truth hurts….awwww man it hurts!

That’s why NONE of you Fred shills have made any sense in the above comments…..

I merely read them to get my chuckles for the day.

ha ha he he ha ha!!!!!!!!

So go ahead, humor me and make complete fools of yourself…

Thanks.

Ummm, thats your department, but on the lighter side, you’re doing a heck of a job at it.

AP is the man! These Fred threads are not about Fred. They are about providing entertainment for we normal rational folks. Watching the depths these Fred groupies will go to justify everything Fred does (JUSTIFYING HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH TERRORISTS!!!!???) is so sickening that it is now hilarious.

Fred groupies = Hitler’s mom

Bwahaha. You, rational? That’s rich.

A lawyer shouldn’t judge the truth of his client’s case. He should just give his best effort on the client’s behalf.

Unless your joking, then well played.

Hey moron, he said nothing about the “truth”. He spoke to the difference between Fred ALWAYS going for the big bucks against conservative ideals, and his representation of the little guy.

You need to dig your head outta yer a$$, clean the $hit outta yer ears and TRY TO PAY ATTENTION.

Elections are won by the candidate that can sufficiently corral The Stupid Vote.

President Paul? Or would that be the “beyond stupid vote”?

BTW, I was Man of the Year also.

Funny, that’s what the ambulance chasing John Edwards says.

Silky, is that you?

Well what can I say, I do believe that an individual should be recognized when they bring a remarkable degree of excellence to their field… :p

doriangrey on October 5, 2007 at 1:19 AM

Now why are you folks being so hard on Freddy boy?

After all, he’s big and 6’6″ so he’s naturally slower and more lethargic cause he takes more energy to do things. Just like your favorite sports team most professional athletes Basketball point guards Multiple officers and enlistees of the US military tall people always are.

Oh well, I guess Hollowpoint is right. Its much better to be a folksy laughing stock than it is to “buy votes” with money you raised working hard on the campaign trail.
