NYT: Fred a big fat flop on the campaign trail

posted at 1:23 pm on October 4, 2007 by Allahpundit

Yeah, yeah, it’s the Times, but look: is this guy actually asking people for pity applause?

Twenty-four minutes after he began speaking in a small restaurant the other day, Fred Thompson brought his remarks to a close with a nod of his head and an expression of thanks to Iowans for allowing him to “give my thoughts about some things.”

Then he stood face to a face with a silent audience.

“Can I have a round of applause?” Mr. Thompson said, drawing a rustle of clapping and some laughter.

“Well, I had to drag that out of you,” he said.

Excruciating. AmSpec editor Quin Hillyer isn’t real thrilled either with one of Fred’s recorded campaign phone messages: “[T]he overall effect was virtually an insult to my intelligence. A drunk Hollywood hack writing for a third-rate sitcom could have typed out those exact same words while in the midst of delirium tremens, as an intentional parody of what a hack conservative politician sounds like. Hacks know how to sound like hacks under almost any circumstance.” Too many platitudes, not enough policy meat on the bone — the same problem that marred his rebuttal to Hillary’s health care plan. Hillyer warns him to “stop coasting,” but maybe he’s not coasting. Maybe he’s just a lightweight. I guess we’ll see at the debate.

Further to that last point, here’s an amusing bit of animation from a lefty outfit called HeadAState. It’s the usual stuff but the punchline at the end is worth it.

Blowback

I had high hopes for Fred, but I will NOT vote for anyone I think won’t be able to win against the left in 2008, as there’s far too much at stake.

Old man Fred, that old man Fred,
He dont say nothin, but he must know somethin
That old man Fred, he just keeps shufflin along.

He dont excite the spectators,
And we all know he dont speak like Reagan.
And them that bore em, may soon be forgotten,
Old man Fred, he just keeps shufflin along, oh yes he does.

The other candidates all sweatin and toilin,
Their bodies all achin and rackin, now listen!
Lift that bar, youd better, tote that campaignin,
And if ya are too lazy,
Youll land in hades.

That, that god-darn old Fred, he just keeps shufflin along.
Keeps on shufflin along.

AmSpec editor Quin Hillyer isn’t real thrilled either with one of Fred’s recorded campaign phone messages: “A drunk Hollywood hack writing for a third-rate sitcom could have typed out those exact same words while in the midst of delirium tremens…”

And, exactly which part of that sentence couldn’t have been typed by a syphilitic homosexual mass-murdering pedophile?

Liberal elites anyone from the east coast love making the southern = stupid connection. Meanwhile American voters have voted for southern or western candidates in the last 6 out of 8 elections.

Geez, AP! You are always slamming FRED! You never attack Rudy. I used to respect you, I even named my child after you. But after this…well…this just crosses the line. Have you no soul? Have you no heart? (this is for those Rudy fans who were complaining earlier this week)

Weight of Glory on October 4, 2007 at 1:44 PM

Just who does Fred have for advisors?

He really needs to step it up. Like I said before, he had tons more energy well before he entered the race officially. I’d like to see him in a debate, at least.

Then, we’ll see the real Fred Thompson emerge…

JetBoy on October 4, 2007 at 1:45 PM

There is a laziness of intellect apparent with Mr. Thompson that is becoming hard to overlook. Too much poon tang will bring a man down, you know…And I should know.

bosteed on October 4, 2007 at 1:45 PM

That Quin Hollyer piece says at one point to Thompson, after listening to his vapid, pre-recorded phone message, “Do you really the ordinary American voter is that stupid?”

Well, obviously. Elections are won by the candidate that can sufficiently corral The Stupid Vote. Am I the only one that’s noticed this? That’s the biggest downfall of representative democracy – the vote of the biggest dumbass in the country counts exactly as much as yours.

I can’t imagine anyone losing an election if he/she has decent name recognition and successfully panders to idiots. Isn’t that Hillary’s strategy? She goes out there and almost says she’s going to pull out of Iraq, and a bunch of morons think she actually said she will pull out of Iraq so they’ll vote for her. Same thing with her health care promises – she obviously isn’t trying to appeal to voters that have a working knowledge of economics and markets. And I’m sure she’ll win handily by appealing to The Stupid Vote. If I was a campaign manager, winning The Stupid Vote would be my only goal.

Sure, it would be nice if voters cast their ballots based on a thorough understanding of issues and policies, but that’ll never happen. Can’t we just be honest and admit elections are mostly about fooling dumbasses into voting for the person you want them to vote for?

Critics, before Thompson enters race: “Fred seems lazy and doesn’t have much fire in the belly, isn’t ready for primetime, etc etc”

Turns out, Fred really is lazy, lacks fire in the belly, isn’t ready for prime time, etc.

If Rudy wins the nomination, the election is lost- either the social cons that got George “Jesus is my co-pilot” Bush elected will run a third party candidate or enough of them just won’t be motivated to vote.

Hollowpoint on October 4, 2007 at 2:30 PM

Yes. It. Did.

A little over three years after Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, Fred D. Thompson provided advice to a colleague about one of his law firm’s new clients: The man representing the two Libyan intelligence officials charged in the terrorist bombing.

The colleague, John Culver, a partner at the Washington firm of Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn began advising the two suspects’ Libyan lawyer in February 1992. Mr. Thompson, according to a memorandum from that era written by his secretary, held “discussions with Culver re: Libya” that same month.

At the time, Libya was facing international outrage for refusing to comply with a United Nations demand that the two suspects be extradited to the West for trial in the 1988 bombing, which killed 270 people. Revelations that American firms were representing Libyan interests provoked a furor among the Pan Am victims’ families. Some law firms refused to represent the country or the suspects, while others withdrew.

The involvement of Mr. Thompson, who worked part-time for Arent Fox as a lawyer and lobbyist from 1991 until shortly before his election to the Senate in 1994, never became public. But Arent Fox’s chairman, Marc L. Fleischaker, confirmed that Mr. Thompson, who is now seeking the Republican presidential nomination, briefly provided Mr. Culver with advice about the suspects’ case, billing the firm for 3.3 hours of his time.

The firm was hired to provide guidance on the tense questions surrounding where the two men should be tried, Mr. Fleischaker said, and Mr. Thompson’s background as a former prosecutor, as well as his government relations experience — he had close ties to senior officials in the first Bush administration — “gave him insight on jurisdictional issues such as that.”
*************
In 1992, Libya was among those countries the United States listed as state sponsors of terrorism for acts that included the 1989 bombing of a French airliner and the 1986 bombing of a Berlin disco that killed two American soldiers.

Arent Fox, in papers it was required to file with the federal government, reported that from February 1992 to August 1993, it provided advice on American and international law to Ibrahim Legwell, the Libyan lawyer appointed by the Libyan Bar Association to represent the two intelligence officials charged with the Flight 103 bombing. Arent Fox received $833,960 in fees and expenses for its work on the case.

Mr. Legwell, reached in Tripoli, said his main goal was to see that his clients were tried in Libya or in a neutral country. He said Arent Fox “contributed a lot” to the defense effort. Mr. Legwell said he had no record of ever speaking with Mr. Thompson but noted: “I remember that this name was mentioned.”

“Some law firms refused to represent the country or the suspects, while others withdrew.” This is the money quote. All jokes aside, there are some people (i.e., terrorists) that even a lawyer won’t help, unless of course your Fred Thompson — he’ll do anything for the $825 in legal fees he charged these terrorists, and don’t forget he must have shared in the $800,000 charged by his partner at Arent Fox.

Well considering the Libyan terrorists (to the best of my knowledge) haven’t even served time for it, any trial was neither here nor there. And I REALLY doubt that they would have ever had a trial in Libya considering who’s in charge there.

Trials against terrorists in absentia is something akin to having a billion dollar judgement against Iran for terrorism. It’s rather pointless and proves nothing but that the Western world has far too many lawyers than is good for it.

Again, I find all this hand wringing far too early. Regular folks don’t even vote in the primaries so neither here nor there. The Dems keep shooting themselves in the foot like with General Betray-Us and SCHIP and they’ll only have themselves to blame. A few more “Bush is like Hitler” phrases and the regular folk in fly over country will definitely say “Anyone but them.”

There was a trial. In a Scottish court located on Dutch territory. (Sorry Fred) And one of his clients was convicted of 270 murders.

The trial was delayed by 11 years, because of Fred’s advice on how these terrorist can avoid justice. The US and Great Britian eventually had to get the UN to impose sanctions on Libya to force Libya to allow these terrorists to be tried in a Scottish court.

mcgilvra on October 4, 2007 at 5:13 PM

This is how I would have written Fred’s script had I been his dramatist back then:

CULVER: Hey Freddie, I got this great new case. They gave me a $500,000 retainer. Our firm is going to make a killing!

FREDDIE: Well, as my pappy used to say — THAT DOG WILL HUNT!!! Tell me more, son. How can I hitch my wagon to this star.

CULVER: We are representing those two Libyans “intellegence officers” that blew up Pan Am Flight 103. The Brits want them tried in Scottland. Our job is to prevent that from happening.

(Here comes the alternate endings)

ENDING ONE:

FREDDIE: Culver, son. Get out of my office right now. I need to dictate my resignation letter from Arent Fox.

ENDING TWO:

FREDDIE: Well, Culver. Like my pappy used to say, money is as good as cash. Give me a couple of hours and I’ll have a complete strategy worked out for you so that those two terrorists never see the inside of a Scottish courtroom.

Fred, like alot of other lawyers could have selected option one, but sadly, he elected option two.

Put up or shut up.. I’ve seen this from you for months and months. Rumor has it that you are an attorney. Well, you don’t have a free pass on this garbage you throw around.

Fred, like alot of other lawyers could have selected option one, but sadly, he elected option two.

tommylotto on October 4, 2007 at 5:21 PM

Option 2? That’s your speculation/daydream.

News2Use on October 4, 2007 at 5:28 PM

Truth hurts, huh?

The fact is, he charged the client/terrorists for 3.3 hours of his time for his advice!!! If he was working to get the terrorists convicted, then it would have been blatantly unethical to charge them for that service wouldn’t it? The advice must have been to help the defense — by definition. It doesn’t take 3.3 hours to tell a terrorist to get out of your office.

His firm was paid over $800,000 to help fight extradition. It worked. For 11 years and only after a UN security counsel resolution and international sanctions, were the good guys able to force a trial.

I am horrified by this. I cannot imagine anything more damning for a candidate than to have helped a terrorist avoid justice. I cannot believe that anyone would even consider Fred a serious candidate as long as this was out there. Those of you who poo poo this are delusional. HE HELPED TERRORISTS!!!!

doriangrey on October 4, 2007 at 6:13 PM

AP is the man! These Fred threads are not about Fred. They are about providing entertainment for we normal rational folks. Watching the depths these Fred groupies will go to justify everything Fred does (JUSTIFYING HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH TERRORISTS!!!!???) is so sickening that it is now hilarious.

Fred groupies = Hitler’s mom

Truth hurts, huh?
tommylotto on October 4, 2007 at 5:54 PM

You’ve made it quite clear that you wouldn’t acknowledge the truth if it stabbed you in the eye.

Lybian subjects involved in an act of terrorism over Scotland on an American airline. Yeah, I can’t imagine there would be any jurisdictional issues there.

You demonstrated yourself that Fred wasn’t part of the team defending the terrorists and didn’t defend them- a member of his firm needed input on a subject Fred had knowledge in, and he gave it.

But by your typically dishonest characterization, Rudy voluntarily assocates with known drug smugglers, pedophiles, mobsters, dictators, Islamicists and white collar criminals.

Being that tommylotto is a lawyer and knowing his stance on other lawyers actions one can only surmise that tommy truly is the scum of the earth, since he obviously only represents people whose actions he supports. I would sure love to see who tommy has represented.

doriangrey on October 4, 2007 at 6:44 PM

The fact is, he charged the client/terrorists for 3.3 hours of his time for his advice!!!

tommylotto on October 4, 2007 at 5:54 PM

What if he advised them to go f*ck themselves?

Ever think of that?

He is also a national freakin’ hero, Time Magazine’s Man of the Year and Knighted by the Queen of England. So, I suggest that you refer to him as “Sir Rudy.”

Is Fred a knight?

tommylotto on October 4, 2007 at 6:51 PM

Rudy also has his hands into the NAFTA superhighway.

So by tommyBoy’s logic, RUDY IS AGAINST THE USA REMAINING A SOVEREIGN NATION!!!

No but Paul McCartney, Bono, Sting, Roger Moore, etc.

What’s your point?

D’oh, I forgot, your M.O. is all about misdirection.

I think tommyBoy is an illusionist (maybe MindFreak) not a lawyer.

How long did it take you to write that? It would have taken Fred even less time to say it. Yet he billed 3.3 hours. You do the math. Not to mention that his firm certainly did not tell them to go f themselves. $800,000 is a lot of attorney time. No, Arent Fox clearly helped obstruct justice in this case by preventing Libyan terrorist from going to trial. What exactly Fred charged them 3.3 hours for is not perfectly clear, but we know it wasn’t just to blow them off.

You do mean an honorary knighthood, since as a lawyer I would expect you of all people to know that…..wait for it…wait for it…its illegal for an American citizen to accept a knighthood. So based on Article I: Section 9, Paragraph 8 of the Constitution:

No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State.

Your boy Rudy would be looking not at a possible run for the white house but a lengthy stay in a federal prison.

doriangrey on October 4, 2007 at 7:10 PM

His title was not granted by the US and he was not a representative of the US at the time he accepted the honor, so try again.

It just goes to show the huge acheivement gap between Rudy and Fred. I would really be kinda embarassed to match my credentials with Rudy if I were Fred.
