New Rush smear spotted!

posted at 8:17 pm on October 4, 2007 by Allahpundit

I’m going to give you the quote, then I’m going to let you guess what the smear is. Ready?

VoteVets.org has — they describe themselves as an organization comprised of veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns who oppose current policy in Iraq. They’ve put together a TV ad that takes aim at me. This ad’s going to run on Fox News, on CNN, it’s going to run on WMAL radio in Washington, $60,000 ad buy that’s going to run, I think, on our local West Palm Beach station down here. And there’s a man identified as Brian McCoff — McGough — it’s M-C-G-O-U-G-H, I’m not sure how he pronounces it, McGo, McGuff — I haven’t watched the ad.

He discusses his service in Iraq, the wounds he suffered there, and he says to me in this ad, “Until you have the guts to call me a ‘phony soldier’ to my face, stop telling lies about my service.” You know, this is such a blatant use of a valiant combat veteran, lying to him about what I said, then strapping those lies to his belt, sending him out via the media in a TV ad to walk into as many people as he can walk into.

This man will always be a hero to this country with everyone. Whoever pumped him full of these lies about what I said and embarrassed him with this ad has betrayed him. They’re not hurting me, they’re betraying this soldier. Now, unless he actually believes what he’s saying, in which case it’s just so unfortunate and sad when the truth of what I said is right out there to be learned.

Think hard, and try to block out that part where he calls McGough a hero. Okay? Now — click!

Update: Both Reid and Mrs. Silky, who always seems to be tasked with the bad cop role, are calling for more pressure on Clear Channel and its advertisers. I don’t think this is about Limbaugh at all for the Democrats; maybe it is for Media Matters, but if the party wants to deal with Rush they’ll likely be in a position to do so in 2009 vis-a-vis the Fairness Doctrine. What this is really about is earning points for defending the troops ahead of trying to pull the rug out from under them when the big push for withdrawal finally comes.

I saw the McGough’s response to Rush’s quote a few days ago, I knew this was gonna gain traction from the same retards that were pushing the first one.

Nonsense…what else is new…

Chudi on October 4, 2007 at 8:25 PM

This drives me nuts. Rush says something that offends democrats, nothing new. Democrats complain about Rush, nothing new. Instead, this time the right blogosphere goes into DefCon 2? Why?

That said, Rush didn’t do himself any favors with this quote. If the whole point of the soldier’s ad was to say “invite me on your show and say it to my face” then Rush is hurting his own cause by trying to dismiss the soldier as “the left confused him and turned him into a suicide bomber of propaganda.”

This isn’t going away, as much as I’d like it to.

All I can say is Thank God that Congress, the Democrat Presidential Candidates, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, mulitple advocacy groups, veteran groups, and lobbyists and working hard and spending millions of dollars to get to the bottom of the biggest problem to hit Americans in well, forever: Rush Limbaugh soundbytes.

Finally we are seeing progress in America.

e-pirate, that isn’t the “whole point” the ad had nothing to do with a veteran trying to get Rush to explain anything to him, face to face or any other way.

Anyone who has been paying attention to the news out of Iraq for the last couple of weeks knows exactly why the liberal/socialist/democrat/Soro’s funded groups are doing this.

Why? because the news out of Iraq is KILLING them. They tried to surrender in order to win the white House in 08 and now we have for all intent and purposes won against the insurgents. The only thing they have left is to smear those who supported the American victory.

It all a big smoke and mirrors distraction to keep people from noticing that the insurgents in Iraq have more or less surrendered or been defeated.

Tell Congress to get off their High Horses, and go after Soros, and the rest of the lunatics. — I’m going to Jamaica. :) (See you all in a couple of weeks)

The guy is mad because Rush made him look stupid. I’ll withhold my own judgement about whether he is or not.

I just think it’s a joke that the Left is now trying to “Defend the Military” when they have done NOTHING to support them….

Now the second leading Democrat presidential candidate won’t even wear an American flag pin.

Rush has and will continue to support the troops far more than the Left….No contest…….!

Nelsa on October 4, 2007 at 8:38 PM

Honestly, Limbaugh should have invited the guy onto his show and then told him, “If you believe that Media Matters told you about what I said, then you’re a fucking tool. A fucking tool who served his country honorably, but a fucking tool nonetheless.”

Nelsa on October 4, 2007 at 8:38 PM

Which is as i said exactly why they are attacking him. the left pinned their hopes for 08 on a US defeat in Iraq, any hope of a US defeat is now gone. The only thing left for them to do is strike out viciously against those who defied them and cheered the US on to victory.

The truth is, the left knows what an American victory in Iraq means, it means that Bush was right and they were wrong. By Nov. 08 that fact is going to be so forward in the public mind and their brutal attempts at causing an American surrender so obvious they will pay a enormous price at the polls.

Limbaugh has tons of money and frequent flyer miles and affiliates in every city. He ought to get off his cushy seat, fly to DC with mic in hand, and have live on-air confrontations with the staff at Media Matters. Hell, while he’s in DC he might as well go to Sen. Reid’s office while he’s in town and get some sound bites from that encounter, too.

Don’t take this crap sitting down. Everyone bitches about Media Matters spending all of this George Soros money to get the Clinton’s elected… well, you’ve got plenty of money, Limbaugh. Why don’t you spend a little of it in the fight against Media Matters?

The issue is not necessarily about Media Matters, but that major news networks and, most alarming (but not surprising) Democratic congressmen and Senators are using Media Matters as a valid source of information.

Rush doesn’t need to take the fight to them. They are doing fine on their own, giving themselves black eyes and soon will be kicking themselves in the asses.

Swiftboat Vets for Rush

Phony Soldiers and Phony Senators
by John E. O’Neill
Posted: 10/04/2007

Recently, at least 41 Democratic Senators, joined by a howling mob including George Soros’ Media Matters, sought to silence Rush Limbaugh because of his reference to “phony” anti war soldiers. Limbaugh’s comments, taken in context, referred to Jesse Macbeth, a confessed and convicted phony, whose faked but graphic war crimes confessions received far wider media notice than his later confession. He had been discharged in boot camp after 40 days of service.

Topsecretk9 on October 4, 2007 at 9:28 PM

I think this is more serious than most of the folks in this thread let on. What they’re trying to do is establish a basis for some future action, which might mean creating a new Fairness Doctrine which would effectively stifle non-compliant speech. If the dems take over the White House as well as both sides of Congress, we could be seeing the end to free speech, among other minor rights.

stonemeister on October 4, 2007 at 9:29 PM

I read this diary over on dkos a day or two ago, and it was painfully sad. I don’t even like Rush that much, but I’m with him 100% here. He supports the military and America no questions asked, every second of the day. The tactics being used by the far left right now are shameful.

BadgerHawk on October 4, 2007 at 9:32 PM

Hmm, ScottMcC might be on to something. Limbaugh should pull a Scientology (vs. Cult Awareness Network) on Media Matters: sue ‘em ’til they’re broke and then buy ‘em out.

Hmm, one problem…Soros $ > Limbaugh $

I just wrote Harry Reid a nasty e-mail in which I called him un-American and a worthless tool of Soros.

This whole thing is just to get the pressure off about the Move On ad a few weeks ago. Of course they would love to bring down Rush in the process. But they have been trying that for years and couldn’t do it. Even the Cinton machine could not pull that off, so I doubt Reid stands a chance in hell.

FBI investigators are currently probing one Katie Barge for illegally obtaining a credit report on Maryland’s Republican Lieutenant Governor Michael S. Steele. Barge undertook the project on behalf of Senator Schumer’s Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC). She was formerly research director of David Brock’s Media Matters for America (MMFA), a Democrat smear machine…When Schumer’s DSCC hired Katie Barge in February 2005, she had already served as research director for David Brock’s Media Matters and as opposition researcher for Senator John Edwards’ abortive presidential campaign.

“It seems that Ms. Barge got hired by the DSCC for exactly the purpose for which she got suspended,” notes Edward Morrissey on his Captain’s Quarters blog.

One CLinton was Enough!

johnnyU on October 4, 2007 at 10:45 PM

Here’s a simple fix. Rush invites McGough onto his show, face to face. He plays the tape clearly showing that he wasn’t impugning anyone’s honor except the fake soldier Jesse Macbeth. He plays Harried Reid’s smear for McGough. Then he asks him if he still feels that Limbaugh was talking about the troops.

Actually, the more of a dust-up this becomes, the better. Let the rest of the country see the Left’s obvious insanity over a small issue like this. Trust them with more power, with the White House? As Al Borland used to say, “I don’t think so, Tim.”

I don’t bother to tune into any MSM news broadcasts, but wonder if they’ve mentioned anything about the huge turnaround resulting from the surge.

Are they reporting anything? I know that’s a foolish question, since facts are like kryptonite to the MSM.

I agree that this is all meant to be a distraction, but I think it’s not necessarily about (or not just about) Iraq. I think that Hillary is trying to do damage control regarding “Runaround Hsu”. The best defense is a good offense, so they have gone on the best offensive they can manufacture (via Media Matters, which Hillary “helped start”). It doesn’t matter that it’s a phony controversy. What matters is that it distracts Rush, other commentators, us, and media cycles away from Hsu. Instead of Hillary’s camp having to defend her, she’s got us having to defend Rush.

I suggest we stop discussing the phony controversy and put the focus back where it belongs…on the Clinton crime family.

Yes, that is also a very large part of it. Not to mention that she has the Peter Paul campaign Finance Fraud situation threatening to blow up in her face. I would really damage her if Norman Hsu and Peter Paul were to receive the MSM attention they rightly deserve at the same time.

History was made in Paul v Clinton when this smoking gun video of Hillary Clinton’s phone call to Peter Paul on July 17, 2000 was introduced June 21, 2007 as evidence of Hillary’s illegal conduct, for review by the California Appelate Court of Hillary’s entitlement to First Amendment protection for her illegal fundraising solicitations in 2000.

Sen. Clinton’s illegal actions, as captured on this video, violated the following US Statutes:

2 U.S.C. Sec 441a (a)(7)(B)(I) provides:

Expenditures made by any person in cooperation, consultation, or concert, with, or at the request or suggestion of, a candidate, his authorized political committees, or their agents, shall be considered to be a contribution to such candidate. (Therefore Peter Paul’s expenditures cannot be deemed to be a “soft money” contribution)

(f) No candidate shall knowingly accept any contribution in violation of the provisions of this section…

(a)(1)(A) No person shall make contributions… to any candidate with respect to any election for Federal office which, in the aggregate, exceed $2,000.

2 U.S.C. Sec 437g(d)(1)(A)(I) provides:

Any person who knowingly and willfully commits a violation of any provision of this act which involves the making, receiving, or reporting of any contribution, donation, or expenditure (I) aggregating $25,000 or more during a calendar year shall be fined under Title 18, or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both…

doriangrey on October 5, 2007 at 12:28 AM

Where’s the outrage at his phrase “drive-by media.” That phrase is a take off on the drive by shootings that gangs perform. Essentially, he is calling the media “bangers.” Where’s the outrage and indignation?

There is none because the media itself can’t complain; it would be unseemly for them to. Nobody else will come to their defense because most everyone recognizes that the MSM is shallow and dumb and hurts people more than they help. It sucks to be a MSM journalist these days.

Mallard T. Drake on October 5, 2007 at 1:05 AM

The liberals think that the masses are real idiots. What’s most insulting is that they think that all the Soldiers are dolts and don’t realize their shenanigans.

2008 will be a very interesting year, not the way they think.

Rush should go to Iraq and address the Soldiers and really expose these rats for what they are.

I strapped on my waders and crept into the cesspool that is “media(doesntreally)matters” comments section on Rush’s suicide bomber metaphor brouhaha.

We know what Rush meant when he used that metaphor. Find a willing veteran, that has animosity towards the war, and exploit him for your political purposes. In this case, he was EXPLOITED by sending him out to continue to spew (explode) more of the lies about what Rush (didn’t) mean(t) with the phony soldier comment.

Here is my metaphor:

The continued alMedia terrorist attacks (lies)directed at Rush have continued to encourage more jihadis (braindead liberals)to join alMedia.

The new recruits continue to kill innocent civilians (conscious humans) with their exploding belts of lies.

But now the tide is turning; as the once neutral citizens (the sane) are now seeing alMedia for what they really are (terrorists), and have begun listening to Rush in an effort to destroy alMedia with the truth.

exsanguine on October 5, 2007 at 8:57 AM

I’ve seen this ad on Fox, which reveals two points to me:

1. Fox has greater tolerance than other media outlets, like NBC, which won’t run certain ads.

2. The left will go to any length to exploit whomever it can for its benefit.

How dare you accuse that veteran of walking around, threating people with a gun!!!!

We know what Rush meant when he used that metaphor.

Again I’m reminded of Orwell. Media Matters also knows what he meant, obviously, but they’ll still play dumb, ’cause they count on the public at large being too ignorant to understand metaphor (hey, they went to public school!).

“It’s a beautiful thing, the destruction of words.”

I didn’t see that coming at all.

It doesn’t surprise me that the dolts at Media Matters don’t know what a metaphor is. Look how ignorant the average Columbia University student is nowadays – and that’s an Ivy League school.

I can’t help but wonder – if one were to say that David Brock is slowly committing career suicide, would Media Matters understand that that was a metaphor or would his co-workers become alarmed, have him hospitalized, and put under suicide watch?

That being said, those “pull the trigger” comments on the JAWA Report were probably meant as metaphors also, although with raging Moonbats one can’t be certain.

Great reminder about Katie Barge. I’d love to have some new comments from Michael Steele referencing her connection to the Media Matters slime machine.

Wow. Check this out, from the Discover the Networks page on Tom Harkin, who smeared Rush on the Senate Floor the other day.

We were reminded last week that he had lied about having flown combat sorties in Vietnam, and I knew that he and John Kerry had gone to Nicaragua to cozy up with Daniel Ortega, but how about this?:

As a staff aide to the House Select Committee on United States Involvement in Southeast Asia Harkin accompanied a fact-finding mission to South Vietnam in 1970. As part of this mission, during a 30-minute visit to Con Son Prison he snapped photographs of Communist prisoners in “tiger cages.”

When the mission returned, Harkin declared that these photographs were “too important” to be turned over to Congress and to the committee that employed him, paid for his travel and provided him official U.S. Government access to the prison. Harkin instead sold the photos, some to anti-American foreign outlets, and others to Life Magazine for $10,000. (Harkin used the money to pay off his debts for his 1972 law degree from Catholic University.)

The “tiger cages” story in Life and throughout the anti-war press turned Harkin into an instant star of the left, including the establishment U.S. media. Harkin gave an interview to the Daily World, official newspaper of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), in which he made sweeping attacks on the treatment of prisoners throughout South Vietnam. His statements, based on 30 minutes spent walking through one prison, were used in Communist propaganda worldwide against the South Vietnamese government and the United States.

If the Dems, the left wing “think tanks” and MSM can make a nine day circus out of obviously “out of context” statements god help us. Rush said nothing offensive and the transcripts are out there to prove it and it still keeps going.

If the Dems keep this up their “cinch” in 2008 may become the Republican “blowout” in 2008. Maybe we can get rid of Harry Reid and some of his ilk in the process. Anyway, welcome to Fred Thompson, the next President of the United States.
