“Amnesty Mel” Martinez to step down as RNC chairman

Sometime early next year, ostensibly so that he can pass the baton to whoever ends up as the GOP nominee but probably because his position on the issue for which he’s most famous doesn’t exactly set the grassroots scurrying for their checkbooks. His approval rating in Florida, incidentally, went from 50% in January down the toilet to 38% in July. I wonder why.
Exit question: Replacements? Hotline says SC GOP chair Katon Dawson is angling for the job but South Carolina’s already as red as they come. The party needs a capable manager with enough personal appeal to fundraise effectively and who hails from the midwest or northeast to add a little national flavor to the GOP’s image. I know just the guy — but unfortunately he’s otherwise occupied at the moment.
Since we can’t get him, how about Jim Brossard?

RNC hasn’t had a leader for years now; why start now?

Seconded!

Welcome, Tony Snow!!!
see-dubya on October 3, 2007 at 6:09 PM
How about Jackie Mason.
Limerick on October 3, 2007 at 6:11 PM
My other suggestion: Peter Robinson. Smart guy, eminently likeable, media savvy, and there’s a Reagan connection. NY born, California resident.
see-dubya on October 3, 2007 at 6:12 PM
Good riddance… homie
SilverStar830 on October 3, 2007 at 6:13 PM
I second jackie mason.
lorien1973 on October 3, 2007 at 6:13 PM
The Party could use some
Steele
juanito on October 3, 2007 at 6:13 PM
I won’t even consider giving them a dime as long as Amnesty Mel is associated with the RNC, and I’ve written that in big black marker on the last couple of surveys they sent me. Perhaps I wasn’t alone. And they better not just replace him with another amnesty shill, or it won’t change a damn thing.
ReubenJCogburn on October 3, 2007 at 6:13 PM
Steele—good one.
see-dubya on October 3, 2007 at 6:14 PM
Blood-n-guts hizself…..Zell Miller.
Limerick on October 3, 2007 at 6:15 PM
Adios Mel!
Michael Steele would be good, I actually agree with Allah, Romney would be very good…he’s excellent at raising money.
Bad Candy on October 3, 2007 at 6:15 PM
Steele. Romney, Newt. Lot’s of options.
The Apologist on October 3, 2007 at 6:18 PM
Capital idea! Let’s!
SilverStar830 on October 3, 2007 at 6:19 PM
Newt
baldilocks on October 3, 2007 at 6:20 PM
Ooo – Zell Miller. Liberal heads would explode.
Or Ann Coulter. How about Rush? Or Tancredo!
Bye bye Mel – don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.
Timothy S. Carlson on October 3, 2007 at 6:20 PM
I’ll second Michael Steele.
Dusty on October 3, 2007 at 6:23 PM
How about Michael Steele?

Newt, with Steele as a second choice.

liquidflorian on October 3, 2007 at 6:25 PM
Whoa! Did I get beat on the Steele vote!
CrimsonFisted on October 3, 2007 at 6:26 PM
Steele or J.C. Watts.
Good riddance Mel.
infidel4life on October 3, 2007 at 6:27 PM
I forgot all about him until you reminded me that we had a chairman of the RNC….
Pam on October 3, 2007 at 6:28 PM
Whoa, Hank III is awesome and thanks for the heads up on Rebel Meets Rebel!
NTWR on October 3, 2007 at 6:29 PM
Newt!
DANEgerus on October 3, 2007 at 6:30 PM
Or let’s get really crazy and nominate someone who believes in a smaller federal government.
billy on October 3, 2007 at 6:30 PM
Good f’ing riddance.
Rather than fall over ourselves trying to get another RINO from the East Coast, perhaps an actual conservative from a conservative state is what we need.
Now we can just hope that Cole follows suit and resigns from the RNCC.
Hollowpoint on October 3, 2007 at 6:32 PM

Wade on October 3, 2007 at 6:40 PM
Early next year is too late. Now…or at the latest 8pm Eastern.
Limerick on October 3, 2007 at 6:41 PM
” Sometime early next year…”
Not soon enough. How about sometime in the next millisecond?
Kalifornia Kafir on October 3, 2007 at 6:43 PM
Yes, you win the prize…he is a very determined man. Steele would be a choice as well…he needs to be used soon or will be marginalized.
tomas on October 3, 2007 at 6:44 PM
I heart Huckabee. I’d like to see him picked as Veep though, too.
In regards to fund raising, I expect that most of the upcoming donations to the RNC will be because of the efforts of one person above all others – and she ain’t no ways tired.
Can I get an A-man?
Dork B. on October 3, 2007 at 6:47 PM
Another call for Steele.
rplat on October 3, 2007 at 6:51 PM
Steele or Watts.

+1,000,001 for Steele!
RushBaby on October 3, 2007 at 6:53 PM
And she’s multi-lingual :)
How are you RushBaby? I envy you for meeting Jeri :)

Steele or Newt. We should save Levin for AG. Because we are going to win in 08.
Its gotta be someone who isn’t afraid of a tough fight.
Iblis on October 3, 2007 at 7:07 PM
Now that I think about it, Mitt will be availiable after February 5th, and so will Rudy.

The better for some discipline, and You Know What I Mean™!
Yeah, and if Steele got the RNC chair, I can visualize going into the poorhouse!
RushBaby on October 3, 2007 at 7:19 PM
Mel Martinez “ran as a conservative” and just like Graham-Amnesty and others, “legislated like a liberal.”
I hope a real conservative is able to beat Mel in the next GOP primaries.
I have a gut feeling that this petition among others probably shorted his term as RNC Chairman.
Michael Steele would be excellent. J.C. Watts is very good too.
This conservative African-American leader would also be excellent as RNC Chairman.
ColtsFan on October 3, 2007 at 7:25 PM
Do you really want to see him do his ‘Republican Boy’ and get completely naked, as he has threatened to do, on Election night?
Helloyawl on October 3, 2007 at 7:36 PM
Darn right, it should have been his job in the first place.
You want to compete nationally? Get Steele, put him on the fundraising trail and stand back.
He took a beating in Maryland, they elected O’Mailey and for thier trouble the have the honor of giving illegals in-state tuition, yay! I think voters can count that as a lesson learned. I’m pretty sure the “comprehensive” Democrats have lost a great many voters in swing states.
Theworldisnotenough on October 3, 2007 at 7:40 PM
At the risk of appearing a mega-sycophant, why not Michelle? I would recommend Allah, but that might necessitate him revealing his secret identity.

An opportunity! To find a good fund raiser, someone who can bring the Party together again. Pie in the sky? I sincerely hope it’s not.
jeanie on October 3, 2007 at 7:46 PM
About time. He should have never been there in the first place. Take your shamnesty and shove it Mel.
WisCon on October 3, 2007 at 7:49 PM
I heard him say he was leaving after the 2008 elections. Are you sure it’s “early next year”?
Kevin M on October 3, 2007 at 7:50 PM
Yes. There is a God.
Lawrence on October 3, 2007 at 8:31 PM
I like Newt too, but he has a lot of baggage, unfortunately. He is a great idea man, though, which is one reason he’s hard not to listen to.
Ooo, how about Karl Rove!
pencilnub on October 3, 2007 at 8:52 PM
Adios, muchacho. Don’t the let door hit you in the culo on the way out.
Now for humor……what about Ted Nugent or Smeats? We could Smeats a green card, right?
Seriously, what about Mike Pence?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 3, 2007 at 8:59 PM
Jeff Sessions
Mojack420 on October 3, 2007 at 9:00 PM
You definitely weren’t alone.
In case anyone from the RNC is reading this, I cast another vote for Michael Steele.
Personally, I’d also like Rick Santorum, but I’ve heard too much bitterness from moderate friends in PA when they talk about the guy. And, as good as Newt, Tom Delay, or any other of the old guard have been, it’s time for new blood. Michael Steele is just the guy for that.
Anton on October 3, 2007 at 9:05 PM
Steele would be good. I also like Herman Cain…

1. Jim DeMint
2. Michael Savage
3. Jeff Sessions
4. Vernon Robinson
5. Dennis Miller
SouthernGent on October 3, 2007 at 10:14 PM
IIRC there was much discussion of Michael Steele in the comments here before Jorge’s amigo Mel got the job before. I also recall a lot of people realizing that Steele’s long term prospects would be brighter if he didn’t take the position. He’d make a great VP for Fred Thompson.
bdfaith on October 3, 2007 at 10:55 PM
My choice would be Steele
tarpon on October 3, 2007 at 10:56 PM
To Mel Martinez: Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.
To Michael Steele: You’ve got my vote.
flutejpl on October 3, 2007 at 11:12 PM
That would be a great choice, as would be Michael Steele, or someone else that can get the base excited.
This is good news (Martinez impending resignation), as it provides an indication that somebody in the RNC might actually be listening.
thirteen28 on October 3, 2007 at 11:12 PM
I love it, but won’t it be a little … uncomfortable having the head of the RNC with more brainpower than all of the candidates, combined?
Jaibones on October 3, 2007 at 11:55 PM
Anne Coulter would kick ass and take names. The libs would lose what few brain cells they have remaining.
dogsoldier on October 4, 2007 at 6:58 AM
The damage has already been done. It’s over. The Dems will rule because of their complete lack of morals. Makes perfect sense, no?
Griz on October 4, 2007 at 7:51 AM
I’m no electoral expert, but Florida seems like a 50/50 state, and he has the Cuban immigrants locked up by race. No way can you beat him in a GOP primary, imo.
Jaibones on October 4, 2007 at 8:07 AM
This is probably wrong, but my emotional maturity level requires that I do a victory dance over this RINO POS who is the very face of what went wrong in 2006. So, here goes:
Ha! You effing douchebag open borders nitwit! You one term wonder, you boneheaded, racist, illegal-alien-hugging bozo! Ho, ho, go back to Florida and enjoy your retirement in Boca Raton! You stink, mister! You’re a putz! We’ve got Jim Webb signing letters lying about Rush Limbaugh and embarrassing everyone in his entire family history because of losers like you! (OK, that one I’ll give you.) You combover-looking NAU-loving Roverman! Just … just … go away!
Aahhh…

Karl Rove (just to watch the usual suspects implode!!)

Thank you Lord for coaxing this loser out of an important GOP post.
Here’s the short list of replacements:
Laura Ingraham (she would kick butt)
MM (takes no prisoners)
Karl Rove (wouldn’t this just drive NOBALLS AT HARDBALL crazy?)
Scooter Libby (heart attacks all around at MSPDQSOOLNBC)

What took so long? This guy is an amnesty stooge and open borders loser. We need someone with (Michael) Steele in his (her) spine.
Captain America on October 4, 2007 at 8:09 PM
I thought we were angling for Steele from the get-go. I look at this as merely a Market correction. It needed to happen.
