Video: Tony Romo’s crazy play Updated

posted at 11:10 am on October 1, 2007 by Bryan
Share on Facebook | regular view

I’m mainly posting this for the Cowboy haters in the crowd.

It was the second quarter Sunday, Cowboys and Rams tied 7-7, Dallas had the ball at about midfield on 3rd and 3. Center Andre Gurode deep snapped the ball several feet over the head of Dallas QB Tony Romo. And Romo turned what should have been a disastrous play into a first down. He went on to finish the drive with a 15-yard run up the middle to score. The Romo Miracle is the third play in the NFL’s highlight reel. Click on the image to head over to see it.

Update: There’s a request down in comments to post Favre’s 421st TD pass. Eh. It’s a great record, and I admire Favre, but it’s not that exciting a play. I’d much rather post video of the Eagles looking terrible and getting thrashed by the Giants on national TV. 12 sacks? Seriously? I can’t get enough of that.

4-0 baby and looking strong. The true test comes vs. New England in two weeks.

He’s definitely a freak of nature.

Sandlot ball…..that’s our QB!

The Rams have some serious problems. A game between them and Oakland would be a gas.

He sure does seem to have issues with handling snaps.
Good recovery, though.

Big S on October 1, 2007 at 11:19 AM

I don’t think you can put the problem with that snap on Romo. It flew out of there like a backwards punt.

In the long run it’s stuff like that can kill you. On the other hand, with that game Dallas really cleaned up its act in terms of penalties, which is something else that can really kill you. Now if they can get the intensity going about 15 to 20 minutes sooner, they might really have something.

Blacklake on October 1, 2007 at 11:34 AM

Looking good boys, offense and defense. The only worry I have about them this year is special teams. They seem to be lacking a bit there.

Oh and New England…..you are toast!

conservnut on October 1, 2007 at 11:34 AM

Bingo…key is to score early on the boys. Put em behind and it will shake em up.

They have struggled in the first half in every game. But the thing that impresses me is that they make adjustments and dominate. That says a lot for the coaching staff. Especially Jason Garrett

I know, I’m just saying that as an excuse to link the photos. I’m a New England fan, and I gotta take advantage of every opportunity to talk smack that I can in anticipation of the big showdown in a couple of weeks. Lord knows we’ve taken plenty of abuse from opposing fans this year.

Look, I am guilty of probably paying way too much attention
to the AFC for a couple of reasons…

But I thought St. Louis Rams were known only for their offense.

The Rams the best defense??? I was surprised to hear that.

I thought Vikings had the best defense in the NFC?

I’m on your side Sue!

It didn’t help the Giants. It didn’t help the Dolphins. It didn’t help the Bears.

Unless I’m misunderstanding totally what your point was, the Boys haven’t let much get them off balance.

Okay. Your team definitely has a lot of weapons, though I do think “T.O.” is over-rated. The other wide receiver for the Cowboys is a first-rate, classic professional act.

Oh, I agree entirely. I lived there (Canada) for a while, and like them and their country quite a bit. However, they always felt like hey had to one-up the Americans any time they could, even if it required digging up some obscure fact from the history books, just to prove how awesomely awesome Canada is. Texans are pretty much the same way.

Romo is a gifted player, but I still pull for whoever is playing the Cowboys. The fact that the team is owned by a complete rectal orifice is merely an additional reason to despise them.

Watching that play, I was cursing Romo, sure he was going to fumble it, or take a much bigger loss than I had to. I was screaming at him to just fall on the ball already.

And then when it was over, my better half turned to me and asked a question that summed it up well: “Where’d they find a white quarterback who could run like that?”

I told her to go Google Michael Irvin before she got in trouble. Then I laughed for a while, since its a damn good question.

Professor Blather on October 1, 2007 at 1:07 PM

frankj on October 1, 2007 at 12:37 PM

Exactly. Success breeds resentment and jealousy.

Ironically, this is exactly why some people hate the United States of America.

Nobody hates the Cleveland Browns.

Nobody hates Switzerland.

For the same exact reason.

No offense, haters. We both know I’m right.

Professor Blather on October 1, 2007 at 1:10 PM

The Canadian-Texan analogy doesn’t work. Here’s why:

1) Canada’s pride comes from the smug satisfaction they can criticize everything their superpowerful southern neighbor (or “neighbour”) does on the world stage without fear of military invasion from the target of their criticism or any of their neighbour’s enemies
2) Canada never fought for independence from Britain–British Parliament just forgot about them starting in 1847 and then noticed Canada showed up as a separate country in the League of Nations charter… oh, and by “independent” I mean that the King/Queen of England is still Canada’s constitutional monarch
3) When Canadians lose some sort of competition, they immediately blame their loss on someone else (for example, the Russian contingent of the Olympic skating judges) and rally around their losers and weep over their Canadianess

Contrast this with Texans:

1) Texan pride comes from an inherent love of their land and confidence in their friends and family
2) Texans fought and won two wars against Mexico (one for independence and one for the USA)
3) When Dallas screws themselves just before the playoffs, Texans will turn their backs on them because they hate losers

As you can see, there’s a big difference.

ScottMcC on October 1, 2007 at 1:12 PM

The closest parallel to Texans, in my experience, is Canadians. You guys boast about your state in exactly the same way as they do about their country.

Were you serious or was that satire?

I’m assuming you were joking – since I can’t think of any two cultures more dissimilar than Canada and Texas.

Texas brag about their guns, their women, their football, the Alama, bullriding, cheerleaders, and tequila.

Canada brags about …??? Socialized medicine? Round bacon? Cold women?

You gotta be kidding. Seriously. Dumbest. Comment. Ever.

No offense.

Bob’s Kid on October 1, 2007 at 11:44 AM

I’m hurtin’ a little from Saturday. Oregon played well for 3 and 3/4 quarters and then started spitting up the ball. The tipped pass interception with a couple of minutes left was the killer. If Dixon completes that pass to Stewart, the Ducks win that game. But they didn’t and Cal jumps to #3 in the polls. Oregon only dropped a few slots, so it wasn’t too bad.

USC looked horrible against Washington. Too bad Washington sucks, because USC was there to be had by a halfway decent team. The Trojans are still #1 in one of the polls. That has to be because the voters on the east coast didn’t stay up to watch the game. Still, four Pac-10 teams in the top 20! Best conference this season.

Personally, I do not understand “TO’s” behavior either.

I am not opposed to “celebrating” or anything like that. Chad Johnson of the Bengals “celebrates” and I have no problem with that at all.

But with TO, it is kinda different.

His behavior strikes me as just “odd” and very “UN Cowboys like,” considering the professionalism of former Cowboy stars of the past.

In Indianapolis, we see the miraculous abilities of wide receivers Marvin Harrison (future Hall of Famer) and Reggie Wayne every single Sunday. And this has been going on for years and years. Not to mention Dallas Clark the tight end. And these classy, professional, unselfish athletes conduct their business properly every single Sunday. No whining to the media, no grumbling in the lookrooms, just professionalism. It is a fact that the excellent blocking abilities of Wayne, Harrison, and Clark just do not get reported often by the media. These three players simply do their “miracles” every single Sunday, and they walk off the field as if nothing happened. It is just “business as usual” for the Colts.
These Colts players do not whine, they do not complain about each other, and there is no jealously or strife between them. They simply do their jobs in a professional manner (just like the Cowboys in the past) every single Sunday.

So when I see T.O.’s behavior, I think, “our guys do miracles EVERY Sunday for the past couple of years. Who
does T.O. think he really is?”

T.O. had a great game against the Bears. Good. I am happy for him. But the Colts players have been having great games for the last couple of years. And they do not have the crazy antics of TO to go along with those great games.

They just do their business properly and walk off the field.

I am not a Cowboys fan.

I just miss the professionalism of the old Cowboys.

Just remembering the last two times the Seahawks played and beat the Cowboys brings a bigger smile. First time Seahawks got the late game interception and FG to win. And Romo still hasn’t gotten into the end zone to try and win the second game. No Seattle hasn’t won a Superbowl (don’t get me started on their one appearance and getting screwed over), but then the Cowboys haven’t been able to beat Seahawks lately.

Even if you don’t think the pass itself was that amazing, consider the year that Favre’s having. Youngest team in the NFL. Worst rushing offense in the NFL. No superstar receivers. 4-0.

Mallard T. Drake on October 1, 2007 at 1:34 PM

Stats-driven computer simulations of a Seahawks v. Cowboys matchup with both team rosters at 100% healthy have the Cowboys winning an average of 2 out of 3 games. If you have Madden ‘08 for PC or Xbox (which uses all current NLF stats and is incredibly accurate) you can easily replicate that outcome.

ScottMcC on October 1, 2007 at 2:15 PM

Whatever. You know what’s great about the NFL? They play the games on the field and not on the computer. Saying the Cowboys would beat the Seahawks because of stats, is like say Hillary will beat whomever because of polls. But hey, maybe there will be a playoff match-up in January. If the Cowboys come back to Seahawks stadium, they will be walking into the lions den (not Detroit). They won’t be able to handle the Hawks and the intensity of the 12th Man. (To you Texans, we know that A&M had the 12th Man first. Deal with it.)

I watched Bullet Bobby Hayes, Walt Garrison Rayfield Wright, Mel Renfro, Charlie Waters, Randy White. I cried when Green Bay beat us in the Ice Bowl. I did the same when the Baltimore Colts came back and beat us in our first Super Bowl appearance. I watched Troy Aikman lose 15 games and cheered like a banshee when we beat Washington for the only win that season. It will take more than a Terrell Owens to stop the blue and silver blood that flows in my veins.

Romo may not be Staubach, but Staubach wasn’t Staubach his first season either. And Aikman wasn’t Aikman in 1989. Give him some time. Let’s see if he is the real deal. So far, I’m impressed.

4-0 baby and looking strong. The true test comes vs. New England in two weeks.

The real test will be if Dallas can find all the equipment and personnel New England will use to steal their plays.

Remember…It ain’t braggin’ if it’s true.

There ya go provin’ my point again! Sometimes I think the lone star is nothing more than a badly drawn maple leaf.

Just kidding…sorta.

I dare you to say that in Texas.

Awww…I’m just messing around. I just didn’t know Texans were so sensitive.

LOL….sensitive enough to take a big chunk of Mexico and not give it back.

I know you’re just kidding, but it would still be funny to see. But comparing us to Canadians? Fightin’ words! But not as bad as bringing up Mexico.

Naw, they wanted to give it to us. We just had to help them understand that.

Heck, I’d like to see what the reaction would be too. I imagine one of those bar scenes where the music screeches to a halt and a bunch of dudes glare at me asking “What’d you say, boy?” Remember, you might think “don’t mess with Texas” sounds cool, but the rest of the country pretty much takes it as a dare.

No Seattle hasn’t won a Superbowl (don’t get me started on their one appearance and getting screwed over)

Mallard T. Drake on October 1, 2007 at 1:34 PM

LOL! As if they were the better team.
