Video: Hey, maybe Rush is still on drugs, says Harkin Update: Harkin is a fake war hero himself
posted at 4:18 pm on October 1, 2007 by Allahpundit
Never have I been happier to send traffic to Think Progress, where they’ve momentarily suspended the Enlightened Finger-Wag of Shame to chortle at Tom Harkin getting very, very nasty on the Senate floor. Good stuff; bookmark it now because there’ll be plenty of nasty, personal digs taken by the GOP before this campaign is through (especially if Hillary’s the nominee) and you’ll want this at the ready the next time those very enlightened, very superior left-wing fingers start wagging. Click the image to watch.
Update (bp): Well, I’d forgotten about this — Tom Harkin is a bit of a phony hero himself.

Things are just gonna keep getting more hostile, aren’t they?

Gee, these personal attacks were a lot more civilized when they were waged via ads in the New York Times.

This is what you get with a democratic congress…whoever said, ‘the politics of personal destruction’.
Chudi on October 1, 2007 at 4:29 PM
The Dems are absolutely desperate to turn the whole “General Betray-Us” fiasco around. First, they (via the New American Gestapo, MoveOn.org) struck out at O’Reilly, and pretty much failed. Now they going after Rush, and will undoubtedly fail.
It’s really pathetic. It’s just a shame that liberals are too cowardly to acknowledge the truth.
Mindcrime on October 1, 2007 at 4:29 PM
Hey, maybe he is. But what’s Harkin’s excuse?
Incidentally, is there a point at which this sort of thing could legally become slander? Or are “lawmakers” free to say anything about anyone on the senate floor?

I guess these guys solved all of our nation’s problems the other day, huh?
Nothing else they had to deal with? No other pressing concerns?
Cause I have to think, why, this Congress wouldn’t seriously waste our time – it’s OURS, you know, as American taxpayers – by spending the day criticizing a political pundit, rather than getting on with the business of legislating the nation.
Vyce on October 1, 2007 at 4:36 PM
Rush has higher approval ratings than Harkin.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on October 1, 2007 at 4:37 PM
My thoughts, not exactly, but in paraphrase. What I thought was, “So much for doing the people’s business.”
Bigfoot on October 1, 2007 at 4:38 PM
Close. Politics of personal distraction. MoveOn’s ad really really hurt so, now, all the Soros employees in the Congress need to find a GOP equivilent to throw up the “everybody does it” defense- completely ignoring that defending a bad deed by pointing out other “bad deeds” is just plain stupid.
I don’t want to leave the impression that I think there is anything behind the attacks on Rush but what the strategy is. Harkin and the leftist loonies will just repeat the accusation over and over again. Just like liberals firmly believe that Kerry was somehow smeared by the SWIFT boaters. The reality, of course, is that they were giving a different version to Kerry’s carefully crafted stories.
highhopes on October 1, 2007 at 4:39 PM
Oh dear God, don’t spread the this thing.
Bad Candy on October 1, 2007 at 4:40 PM
The only problem with this is that leftists are immune to shame. Point out their inconsistency, and they’ll respond without irony that Rush deserved it, so it was okay.
Kensington on October 1, 2007 at 4:42 PM
So, let me get this straight –
According to Dems, debate on, and a resolution condemning the MoveOn Betray Us advert is a waste of time, and occasion for Leftwing media morons to ambush Republican congresswomen with idiotic, wrong, war death trivia.
However, Limbaugh says something that is actually correct, it gets taken completely out of context, and the best thing our Congress can think of to do with its time is to debate the issue and demand apologies.
What the hell is wrong with these guys?
nailinmyeye on October 1, 2007 at 4:42 PM
Ironically, if Federal Judge Collyer’s interpretation of that clause in actions she took only last week — deciding that Murtha must testify in the libel case against him — the precedent would be established for Rush to go after Harkin.
Collyer basically drew a separation between this clause protecting legislators from criminal prosecution and not protecting them from civil actions. At least that’s how it seems to me.
chrisro on October 1, 2007 at 4:43 PM
It would be nice if they bothered to get their facts straight before they started the character assassination routine.
This is what you get with Democrats in power. Do they ever do anything constructive for the country? Anything at all? With the Democratic Congress approval rating at 11%, why do Dems think they are going to win big in 2008? This is an expamle of governing a nation?

“…if Federal Judge[...]last week holds up — deciding that…”
chrisro on October 1, 2007 at 4:44 PM
One of the scary things which hit me last week…
ALL of the Democrat Candidates for President are or have been in Congress.
ALL of their “solutions” to our internal problems HAVE to start in the legislature… Border enforcement (oversite and money), Tax policy (congress), Schools (funding and rules), Energy (Pres. can’t do a dam thing)…
Sooo… they’ve been in the position to address these problems for YEARS… and have not… and now want an office where they don’t have the Legal Ability to address these problems….
Color me confused.
Romeo13 on October 1, 2007 at 4:44 PM
Investigations, non-binding resolutions, investigations, non-binding resolutions, investigations….
In some cases I’d be mad when government officals get paid for doing nothing. As far as Congress goes, keep it up, the more time they spend on this crap, the less time they spend reaching into my wallet with new legislation.
Oh, and in case they didn’t notice, this just drops the approval ratings for Congress even lower. Single digits, anyone?
On a side note, the Democrats have basically rendered themselves useless, and incapable of engaging in adult debates.

Limbaugh did offer an apology today, but not for himself — rather for Media Matters, an organization that circulated his remarks about “phony soldiers” last week.
“I want to apologize to all of the members of the United States Military, both in uniform and out, active duty and retired, for Media Matters for America,” Limbaugh said today. “They will not apologize to you, and they will not apologize to me. I want to apologize to you on behalf of them. As all of you military personnel know, I, since (the) beginning of time and since the beginning of this program, certainly 19 years ago, have been one of the most ardent, loyal, in-awe supporters of any and all who wear the uniform — including those who disagree with the mission.”

KelliD on October 1, 2007 at 5:08 PM

I think that’s right. Media Matters knows that anyone who looks into its charges will know that they are bogus. But that’s almost beside the point. Their objective (i.e., the Clintons’ objective) is to arm fellow-liberal mainstream media outlets with excuses to ignore Limbaugh (“He insulted the troops!”) and O’Reilly (“He’s a racist!”) as the election approaches. It’s all about putting Bill Clinton back in the White House.
CommentGuy on October 1, 2007 at 5:11 PM
They keep making Rush and O’Reilly’s shows “must listen/watch” entertainment. Maybe tomorrow Rush will say tell Harkin to “Step off the Senate Floor and say that, tough guy”
NellE on October 1, 2007 at 5:11 PM
In an ideal world, the public would be educated that these phony anti-American soldiers exist and it will end up biting the Dems in the butt. I am sure Rush can achieve this.
It has been hard on Rush running defense for a liberal Republican president these last 7 years. We should have been on offense as in 1993-1994.
Valiant on October 1, 2007 at 5:13 PM

IT’S NOT A “SMEAR” — it’s better understood as “battlespace preparation.” And the target is the traditional media; the intent is to limit the ability of people like Limbaugh or O’Reilly to drive stories in the mainstream news as we get closer to the election. Expect more of this, with more targets.

Via Radio Equalizer
With congressional Democrats poised to introduce an anti-Rush resolution on Capitol Hill tomorrow, wouldn’t they do well to first take a look at the real story? Otherwise, they may end up with egg on their collective faces.
And given this new information, how will the Soros- funded Media Matters crowd keep this faux controversy alive?
Concerned that the clip in question might soon disappear from ABC’s website, your Radio Equalizer placed it on YouTube yesterday as a precaution:

From Rush Transcript on his website
They’re a Hillary Clinton front group. They will continue to be used as an accredited source by the Drive-By Media, despite the fact that they have now been demonstrated to make things up, take things out of context, and embarrass those who report what they say. They will continue to be a source, because this is the ’08 playbook that we saw break down last week, and the Democrats may still introduce their resolution in the House castigating me. I don’t know. The House doesn’t go into session ’til two o’clock. We’ll have to wait and see. I don’t know if they will do that or not. If they do it, it is just an effort to try to portray themselves as pro-military because they know they have to because they know the impression they have accurately created is that they’re not pro-military, from Jack Murtha to Harry Reid claiming defeat, to John Kerry’s lifetime of criticism of the soldiers. So they’re going to try to deflect the criticism away from their pet organization, MoveOn.org, whose “Betray Us” ad backfired totally on them. It was a Wellstone moment for them, as this will be. But since you will never get an apology from Jack Murtha for mischaracterizing you as murderers, since you’ll never get an apology from John Kerry, since you won’t get an apology from Media Matters for America or anybody that works there, to all of you in the US Military, I want to apologize to you for them for the, again, firestorm over something that did not happen regarding your valor and your commitment to freedom and democracy last week on this program. I really regret that it happened, and I apologize to you on their behalf since they won’t.

Mr Harkin lies about his service, going from a pilot who flew F-4′s and such in Vietnam then when challenged, admitting after several lies that he was only a Vietnam era vet. How dare he judge anyone, that piece of dirt. I am insulting my education and my class of character when I say that I am seeing an insurrection to take over this country as a viable alternative. I know Thomas Jefferson and James Madison would approve.

How does one respond. It’s getting to the point that, well, why even bother twisting a statement someone said,, why not just completely make up false news. It’s all about the same.
Of course,, this is really about shutting up the people. This is really about getting control of talk radio and eventually the internet. They’re throwing a few matches out in the forest and seeing if it catches fire. That is what this is about. I wrote this earlier but, I will repeat it.
The Dems fear and hate talk radio and the blogs,, but should another Reagan like leader ever emerge while talk radio and the internet is still vibrant, it would spell doom for them for years to come. It would be their “perfect storm.” They would long for the days of Bush, and even long for the days of Reagan. Reagan accomplished so much without talk radio or the internet. But, another Reagan like leader WITH talk radio and the internet? Reagan accomplished so much on his own,, but would he have gotten away with a Sandra Day O’Connor appointment had talk radio and the blogs been around?? I doubt it very much. The world has not seen what a true conservative leader may accomplish while in tune and in check with the voice of the American people, which talk radio and the internet provides.

This man is one of my senators. When my husband deployed and I sent the necessary paperwork to a major corporation to request the Service members civil relief act be used on my husbands account.
The company responded that it wasn’t an “option”.
After 2 months of sending the company copies of the law and speaking to numerous customer service reps and supervisors, I still got nowhere.
I finally sent a copy of the correspondence to both of my senators as well as my congressman to see if they could assist me.
I received immediate replies from our Congressman (Steve King)and our other Senator(Chuck Grassley). I received nothing from Harkins’ office.
My Congressman had the problem taken care of within days.
Now I don’t know if they have some sort division of labor when it comes to these sorts of things, but even so, I find it odd that I received no response whatsoever from Harkins office.

Call me crazy, but I got thinking ever since the third party
thread.
To me everything was civil, but when Bill Clinton was doing that interview on fox he became a un-hinged Moonbat, another words hey Lib’s see what I got away with, now step up to the plate.
We wonder why Christians in the Republican party are upset,
well the media has been doing hit piece after hit piece.
We had that story with MKH,we had Mitt and the Mormon hit pieces. Then CNN does a hit piece on ya you guessed it all
religions are bad, extreme Muslims, and surprise Christians
to the right are Duh,just as bad, maybe even worse.
(But thats a lie,we know better).
Now they move in on Rush Limbaugh,Ummm I wonder why,Oh ya
everyday he points out what the left are up to,and Hillarys scandals. The shoe is going to drop soon, they go after one more Republican and mark my words they certaintly will, because they can,t help it,you will see clearly the
media in colusion(meaning there in bed with the DNC)with the Clinton war machine.
It is really no surprise,at least to the Republican stratagists, you would think that after four years of the LIBERAL MEDIA hammering away at Republicans were in this boat now. Were all starting to argue!

This is a show for the “base” and to stroke Soros.
Fortunatly (for us), it is going to backfire. Not only will it not help the Democrat’s popularity, but it will INCREASE Limbaugh’s ratings, raise his advertising rates, and reack even MORE Americans than the 20 million or so he reaches weekly. Plus, Hannity, Levin, and some others talk radio hosts are running with this, Levin says he’s going to Nevada to work for Reid’s opposition. Harken had better be thinking of retiring, because he’s embarrased himself with other Iowans.
And it will increase donations to the Republicans.
The apology to the troops on behalf of Media Matters by Limbaugh was a “masterstroke” of genius. The troops AND their families have their perceptions that the Democrat machine hates them reinforced. Limbaugh reinforces the perception that it is he and the Republicans that appreciate their sacrifie.
