I know the history of the “Sonderkommandos” (from “The Scourge of the Swastika“, etc.) who “volunteered”, in order to save themselves for a little while longer, to do the most horrific work forced on them by the Nazi maniacs.

And that at Birkenau they heroically revolted.

But your point is well taken.
They are not forced into their demented positions, and they are not even saving themselves.

They merely prove that irrationally adhering to any rule tends toward madness.

Ultra-Orthodox Sonderkommandos.

This isn’t fair to the Sonderkommandos, who were forced into service by the Nazis. The Sonderkommandos had the job of clearing the bodies out of the gas chambers and going through their remains for gold teeth and through their effects for other valuables.

At one death camp, the Sonderkommandos sabotaged the crematorium.

While the Sonderkommandos lived in a morally problematic situation (hence the title of the movie The Grey Zone), they were not kapos and were not really collaborators.

Sorry that my contempt for them was not clearer. They deserve to be excluded from every communal role and function possible.

It kind of reminds me of that “faith” joke (I’m paraphrasing here, and I know I’m wrong, but you’ll get the idea):
