How much privacy can we expect from UstreamTV?
jaime on October 1, 2007 at 9:37 PM
I don’t see any labels on those bottles…..Would those happen to be adult beverages?
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 1, 2007 at 9:37 PM
What the h&ll…..when I posted a comment here, it reloaded ustream. And the frame looks as if Bryan is giving the finger!
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on October 1, 2007 at 9:39 PM
I tried both IE and Firefox and I get periodic pauses as the video stream runs and the chat room tries to log in about every 1/10th of a second but can’t get through.
CommentGuy on October 1, 2007 at 9:50 PM
Vid stream sux so bad for me that it is pretty much unwatchable. Guess it must be on my end since there are so many that don’t seem to be having a problem. I wish there was a help area for viewers, all I could find was for people wanting to set up a show.
TBinSTL on October 1, 2007 at 10:00 PM
I’m really disappointed that Michelle didn’t eat the whole bag of cheese puffs.
Ali-Bubba on October 1, 2007 at 10:01 PM
Awesome show, Bryan and Michelle!
Mindcrime on October 1, 2007 at 10:02 PM
I got a virtual kiss from Michelle! WOOOO HOOOOO! I’ll never wash my screen again!
Tony737 on October 1, 2007 at 10:02 PM
Wow, very nice. What type of registration was open? For Michelle’s other site?
Also, can someone explain how is it that some folks had their screen name printed while the rest of us has “ustream” to identify us?
Thanks.
The False Dervish on October 1, 2007 at 10:02 PM
Great show, if only Mindcrime could get off “heroes” and join us in Battlestar Galactica (remember Razor flashbacks starting this Friday about Adama in first Cylon War).
TheEJS on October 1, 2007 at 10:02 PM
That would have been so cool — spontaneous — just grab the bag and start stuffing those cheese puffs in! It would have made the HA highlight reel.
Maybe next time?
Ali-Bubba on October 1, 2007 at 10:03 PM
Very interesting!
This would make a great forum for a regular “defeat Hillary” nationwide news update and thoughts from the field.

THX MM and Bryan :)
trailortrash on October 1, 2007 at 10:04 PM
That was great!
I’d like to see interviews with Newt, Fred, GW, Tony Snow, Brit Hume, Doolittle Raiders…
Zorro on October 1, 2007 at 10:05 PM
To change your screen name, you had to type

Ali-Bubba on October 1, 2007 at 10:05 PM
I bet they’ll use the livestream for CPAC 08 and then for the GOP convention.
Ali-Bubba on October 1, 2007 at 10:06 PM
I don’t check out MM for a couple days, and she has open reg.
Typical me.
JetBoy on October 1, 2007 at 10:06 PM
Eeeewwww. Cream soda?
Do you REALLY expect the HotAir readership to forego NFL Monday Night Football in order to watch the two of you eat Cheetos and drink cream soda?

Michelle, I missed the name of the program you will appear on tomorrow, please repeat, I’ll set the DVR

Britney suicide-watch! This is the top story on CNN. They keep saying she’s hit bottom. Hardly. There’s always a deeper bottom. She’s gonna start digging.

I came in late on live. I could only get bit and pieces, always freezing. Now on rewind it works fine.

was anyone else not able to get the chat room on ustream tv web site??
Mojack420 on October 1, 2007 at 10:16 PM
I had to register with ustream.
oakpack on October 1, 2007 at 10:19 PM
I believe she will be on tomorrow at about 9:40 with Megan Kelly and Bill Hemmer on Fox.
When I was on, the system identified me simply as “ustreamer” (something like that). I registered so that my proper screen name would appear the next time.
The False Dervish on October 1, 2007 at 10:35 PM
Mine went for 26 seconds, and then to a black screen.
I don’t have a clue how or where to go in the chat room.
Hey,next time can we get an early warning radar as to when
it might be live, that would be super, other than that this
looks like more fun ahead.Hot Air,you Rock.
canopfor on October 1, 2007 at 10:36 PM
That is 9:40 AM, Zorro.
The False Dervish on October 1, 2007 at 10:36 PM
i still couldnt get to the chat room when i logged in almost forgot i had an account with them for a minute
Mojack420 on October 1, 2007 at 10:36 PM
Mojack, I dont know what to say. I am quite computer illiterate
Someone on the chat advised me to go to ustream.tv and get account from them by logging on, so that is what I did after this program was over.
The False Dervish on October 1, 2007 at 10:39 PM
That was great.
terryannonline on October 1, 2007 at 10:39 PM
Almost like being right there. Some viewer comments were clever. Looking forward to the next one. 9PM was a good time. Many thanks.

Time for me to turn in. Good night to my fellow commentors.
Ending Transmission.

A triple *snort* inducing comment… I’ll have to be more careful in the future with my commenting so as to avoid inflicting any *snort* induced trauma.
It’s more than a little, and I believe the technical term is freaky deaky, that AP is able to instantly come up with the source of a six day old comment.

I love the whole Wayne’s World vibe. Nice job.
Mojave Mark on October 1, 2007 at 11:42 PM
Can we get a notice about these live webcasts? I would like to catch them but can not sit in front of the browser clicking refresh on Hotair all the time. How about a news letter or google alert or something. I do not know, I just hate missing these things.
zerodamage on October 1, 2007 at 11:56 PM
Maybe post the HotAir Live! thread a half hour-hour before?
Bad Candy on October 1, 2007 at 11:58 PM
We’ll promote the next one. We’re just still working out the kinks on these first couple of shows.
Bryan on October 2, 2007 at 12:07 AM
I think y’all are on to a very good thing! Very nice!
Gatordoug on October 2, 2007 at 12:20 AM
I think it’ll be a good thing if you can get the bugs worked out.
Bad Candy on October 2, 2007 at 12:21 AM
I just worked a couple out, and had 20 viewers while working it out. It must have been a pretty disappointing show for them.
Bryan on October 2, 2007 at 12:23 AM
Hey, its a learning process, I’m sure they get that. Look at it this way, the fact you had people watching you fumble around trying to fix the system probably says something about fan loyalty…
Bad Candy on October 2, 2007 at 12:26 AM

MST3K Democrat debate. If you’re not going to do it, I would love to borrow the idea and use it for my “television production class”, final project.
Mojack420 on October 2, 2007 at 12:34 AM
Oooh, those were UTZ Cheese Balls! I prefer the Grandma Utz Old Fashioned Chips, myself.
The reason I was ragging on you to eat the whole thing was that I saw one of the other chatters say, “Hey, Michelle, see how many cheese curls you can fit in your mouth.” The visual comedy appeal was too much to resist.

Ali-Bubba on October 2, 2007 at 12:47 AM
Musically speaking.

Thanks for the clarification. I was worried for a minute ….
Ali-Bubba on October 2, 2007 at 1:08 AM
Hi guys,
I love the show, but please consider the folks in the Pacific Time zone when you plan your schedules. Maybe you can use several standard time slots to give everybody a chance.
Won’t be very convenient for you guys though…. oh well sometimes success is a pain….
Herikutsu on October 2, 2007 at 1:30 AM
Where are you going to publish the schedules of H/A Live!
georgej on October 2, 2007 at 6:27 AM
Just wanted to add 2 cents regarding the last comment about accommodating people in the Pacific time zone.
Don’t waste your time. I work for a nationwide company and for more than 2 years now I’ve been trying to placate people on the West Coast who bitch and moan about online meetings and conference calls based on East Coast time. Nothing I do ever makes them happy. They are more than happy to let me and my East Coast colleagues work through our lunch hour and stay late for them, but they’re never willing to come in early or work through their lunch hour to make these meetings.
“3PM Eastern is lunch time! Can’t you make it 4PM?” Um, sure. I’ll just tell the people who work until 4PM they have to stay late for you.
You’ll never make them happy.
Jaynie59 on October 2, 2007 at 6:47 AM
Awright. I know this is beta, but this hotair live ’stream of conscienceness’ stuff ain’t working. Might I recommend the ol’ script & edit production method of vents past?
I know. I know. Free show. Free advice. Ya get what ya pay for….
Thanks for playing.
locomotivebreath1901 on October 2, 2007 at 9:07 AM
what do you mean , how many of you east coasters would wake up at 330 am just to catch Michele on F&F? After watching red eye before going to bed.
The 6est/9pst is great
Mojack420 on October 2, 2007 at 9:46 AM
Missed it last night, but thanks for posting the video. It was great! The format has a relaxed, informal feel which is nice.
When you promote the next UStream session, to minimize trolls p’raps you could email registered Hotair & MM users a day in advance.
zb42 on October 2, 2007 at 9:54 AM
Michelle and Bryan:
So much better, Get Bryan more umbilical (Fireware) cord so both of you could be well centered. OK Bryan, how bout Near or Ginger Beer.
Also, when are you on the air officially. In Hawaii, where you are 6 hours behind us. But you are becoming more and more popular as I show the local Asian community that if they work hard and have their mind in the right place they to can make a difference.
Also, I am sure evolution will have you competing with ‘Red Eye’.

The hotair.com “bug” looks chunky. I think you need to learn a little more about the compression process and get the bug sized properly for the compressed video.
The Monster on October 2, 2007 at 2:53 PM
I have an email address. If you have constructive suggestions, send them in. If you just want to be a jerk from the peanut gallery, buzz off.
Bryan on October 2, 2007 at 2:56 PM
I did. It was on topic, didn’t use inappropriate language, or even comment on anyone’s sexual desirability.
There’s obviously something UStream is doing to your video to chunkify the bug, but their own logo in the top right corner looks just beautiful. They have the advantage of perfect knowledge of their own compression methods, while they apparently treat you like a mushroom.
I thought I was on hotair.com, not some left-wing echolocation chamber where any deviation from the Party Line gets bitchslapped instantly.
(I have an email address too, you know.)
The Monster on October 2, 2007 at 3:35 PM

Hey Bryan, if you like Relient K, have you heard their Christmas tunage from a few years ago? Great stuff, and getting to be that time again…
Where in Texas are you from btw?
Schweggie on October 2, 2007 at 5:16 PM
Monster,
Thank you for your suggestion.
Michelle on October 2, 2007 at 8:09 PM
I hate cheese puffs, but watching Michelle eat them almost makes me want to try them.
Lawrence on October 2, 2007 at 9:00 PM
Well, when you say “I think you need to learn a little more about the compression process” it comes off a little bit pushy and insulting. I’ve been compressing video for the web for quite a while going back to the years I worked for NASA, but ustream limits one’s options. It’s not as though I can tell it “Quicktime H.264 768k stereo 22kHz 24 fps” or what have you and get exactly what I want. You get a frame rate and a bit rate and that’s about it, the choices there are limited, and they compress their streams even more than YouTube compresses its movies. Quite a bit more, which accounts for the blockiness that you see all over the place in every stream. Ustream is evidently overlaying their own graphics downstream from the compression via the Flash player similarly to the way YouTube does (and if you notice, YouTube’s bugs look clean while the video they serve up looks like you’re viewing it through dirty cellophane half the time). Flash allows for that, and Flash is their platform, but it doesn’t help us get our bug to look better since we’re laying that in on the front end with our outgoing stream. Comparing our compressed bug to their pre-loaded bug isn’t really a fair comparison because they’re not being delivered in the same way. That’s not say that ours can’t look better. I’m sure it can with some tweaking in Photoshop.
Bryan on October 2, 2007 at 10:18 PM
I enjoyed the live streaming. Good job, you dorks. ;)
Metro on October 2, 2007 at 11:42 PM
I certainly didn’t intend it that way, but who am I to complain about having people misinterpret my intent — at least I don’t have Media Matters telling outright lies against me.
You had commented on how much you appreciated feedback, so I offered it. The chat room was closed by the time I saw this (Hint: Give us some advance warning so we know to tune in live).
Bryan, the stuff you’ve been producing on this site has been top-notch, particularly given the constraints YouTube etc. put on you. For an amateur like me to go into a detailed discussion of how rasterizing an image at one size, then resizing it as part of the compression process, causes blockiness, would have come off as arrogant as all hell. So I assumed you knew what I was getting at, that you’d only been playing with ustream for a short while and hadn’t figured out all the details yet.
Strangely, the moving flag didn’t seem to have the problem. Animated graphics usually get away with carrying a lot less information per frame than stills, so maybe they don’t need to be compressed so much.
Nor do the rotating ads in the LL corner of the tutorial their guru Chris Pirillo did. To my eye, it looks like he may have done some deliberate blur filtering to tone down contrast, making them a bit fuzzy. I think that’s a bit better than chunky, but he may have gone too far with it. There might be a happy medium in there somewhere.
The Monster on October 2, 2007 at 11:45 PM
Well I swore to myself that my last comment would actually be my last in this thread, but this one will really be my last. Because I’m going to get some sleep at some point.
Pirillo is making the best use of ustream’s tiny space and bandwidth limitations that I’ve seen. How he’s getting all those graphics up there and that they’re legible is nearly a miracle. Thanks for linking the tutorial–I hadn’t seen that. He’s making some hard points about Mac vs PC that we might find problematic since I have all PCs around here. The boss does have a Mac though. He just said in the tutorial that Windows users are “out of luck.” Sigh.
My bad for coming down on you. We get a lot of trolls and actual jerks who pop us for all kinds of things, and I mistook you for one of them. And I get a little twitchy when I’m publicly testing something like this and not getting the results that we want. It’s more than a tad embarrassing to look at what we’re putting out and knowing that it’s not up to par even though it’s an experiment for us. The clunky bug was one of about half a dozen things that need some work.
Bryan on October 3, 2007 at 1:22 AM
Our firewall reported USTREAM asking for all kinds of access protocols on a whole bunch of ports.
We’ve now blocked USTREAM altogether: it’s just not worth the risk.
I’ll settle for the herky-jerky version of the Michelle show.
