The issue is neither the content of his speech, nor his right to say any damn thing he wants to. The issue is whether he should be given the privilege of using the university’s platform to say it.

They won’t, because the Klan (fortunately) is not a big enough deal anymore. Ahmadinejad, on the other hand, is. I’m a big fan of Bolton, and no real fan of Bollinger, but I think Bolton’s wrong here. Having a liberal University president as well known and highly regarded (in many circles)as Bollinger is call Ahmadinejad, among other things, vicious, uneducated, and a coward, in public, is an excellent thing. Bolton’s point of view is that of a diplomat, and he’s worried about legitimizing Ahmadinejad for the global audience. I think the more important audience here is domestic liberals, who are uncomfortable with the Bush administration, and with any tough talk concerning Iran. To hear that kind of speech from one of their own leading intellectual lights may help to legitimize a tough stance against Iran among such individuals. It’s a shame Ahmadinejad had to be here for such a speech to be made, but the result is something we should cheer, not disparage.
