Video: Of course we’d invite Hitler to speak, says Columbia dean

posted at 6:47 pm on September 22, 2007 by Allahpundit

Webloggin’s also on this. I have it in my head somehow that Dwight Eisenhower, when offered the opportunity to personally accept the surrender of a German general, refused. So unspeakably loathsome did he find the Nazis that he wouldn’t dignify them with his presence, even at the moment of triumph. I can’t find an account of that online, though. Anyone able to help?

Apparently 60 Minutes is going to let Ahmadinejad speak directly to the American people, which won’t be the first time a broadcast news outfit has invited a pig to propagandize. In the meantime, as we await the arrival of the world’s foremost Holocaust denier, a few words to meditate on from a then-future, now former president of Columbia University:

The things I saw beggar description. While I was touring the camp I encountered three men who had been inmates and by one ruse or another had made their escape. I interviewed them through an interpreter. The visual evidence and the verbal testimony of starvation, cruelty and bestiality were so over powering as to leave me a bit sick. In one room, where were piled up twenty or thirty naked men, killed by starvation, George Patton would not even enter. He said he would get sick if he did so. I made the visit deliberately, in order to be in position to give first-hand evidence of these things if ever, in the future, there develops a tendency to charge these allegations merely to “propaganda.”

Note what Coatsworth says about there being no shortage of willing media outlets. Hard to argue with that.

Update: As it turns out, Columbia’s been Nazi-friendly for more than 70 years now. It’s part of the Ivy tradition of enlightenment.

Update: I guess this video was worth cutting, huh?

The link goes to my YouTube clip.

Update: Gaius e-mails with a link to the story of Ike and the German general.

The German government tried to surrender to the Western Allies only. On May 6 Colonel General Alfred Jodi was flown to SHAEF headquarters in Rheims, France, to negotiate a surrender. Eisenhower refused to negotiate a separate capitulation to the West, and he refused to deal with Jodi in person. To Eisenhower, Jodi was not really a soldier, and the German military was not worthy of the respect given to real soldiers, sailors, and airmen. He believed it was part of a gangster regime that stained the honor of soldiers. With little negotiating leverage, Jodi accepted Eisenhower’s terms on May 7. Officially, at midnight as May 8 began, Germany surrendered to the Western Allies and Russians alike. At the insistence of the Russians, however, a second surrender ceremony took place in Berlin later on the 8th.

Of course we’d invite Hitler a wolf to speak,

Apparently 60 Minutes is going to let Ahmadinejad speak.

Good. Now I know, what program not to watch.

Protests against his Columbia appearance are planned at the university and the United Nations by demonstrators angry at his questioning of the Holocaust and declarations that Israel will cease to exist.

Ha! …I forgot!

I had a dream last night where I was a part of the crowd at the university. And when he started to speak, I was the first one to turn my back to him and walk out.

In the dream, only about 40 – 50 people stayed behind to listen to and debate him.

That was one of the best dreams I’ve ever had!

Columbia University – Higher Learning through Moronic Stupidity.

Why when history repeats itself, it’s the intellectuals they first come for.

Hand him a shovel so that he may get a good head start in digging his grave.

I stopped watching 60 Minutes years ago when Andy Rooney’s dementia kicked in and the rest of the cast started drinking his kool-aid.

If he (Hitler) were willing to engage in a debate and a discussion to be challenged by Columbia students and faculty, we would certainly invite him.

There would be no debate or discussion.. they would be too busy licking his boots.

Universities are useless. Told my younger cousin to get a useful degree and get out. Don’t get wrapped up in the “modernism” or moral relativism that pervades all universities.

I got my degree and got out.

What’s more useless than Universities? University Professors. Completely incapable of living a normal life and having a useful job. Instead they become professors in a mistaken assumption that it makes them superior to everone else and can thus look down their noses at the “common folk”. This dean can kiss my, well, you know.

This is a little(no, a lot)off the subject, but it comes to mind. In this months Legion mag there was this quote from Nicolas Sarkozy, the French Prez “…When a young American soldier dies anywhere else in the world, I can’t help but think he has the same face as one who came to die in 1917 or 1944.” (2006) Pity many of our own do not share his depth of feeling.

O’Reilly featured this issue last night; he had on a young woman who supported Ahmedinijad’s presence, and a young man who was against it. The young man had served two tours of duty in Iraq, and stated that Iranian weapons were used to kill Americans.

The young woman later asked him, “So what are you afraid of?” in reference to Ahmedinijad visiting Columbia.

This former soldier had stared down death during his tours in Iraq, and she has the audacity to ask him what he was afraid of?

Idiot.

Just the opposite is true. The salient point is that if a right winger goes to a university, the students go crazy and riot. We’ve seen them get violent if even a conservative speaker tries to show up. If Hitler showed up, they would be almost as hysterical as if Jihadwatcher showed up. Almost.

The President of Iran, being a “visible minority” and a non-Christian, however, is considered a friend of the Left.

Big difference.

The difference being, that in 1933 Columbia would have also invited the equivalent of Jim Gilchrist and made sure he also had his say, respectfully.

Even the slightest bit if BS like trying to shout the speaker down or hold up banners, not to mention charge the stage would not have been tolerated.

The difference between then and now is the despicable amount of hate for any viewpoint not radical enough to be cool, trendy or anti establishment.

At that time America was anything but insecure because our sensitivity caused by the lack of tolerance for listening to all sides hadn’t been perpetrated upon College kids yet by radical faculty.

Ward Churchill might have been allowed to speak but he would never have found his way to a lectern that allowed him to indoctrinate…anybody.

The unconditional surrender of the German Third Reich was signed in the early morning hours of Monday, May 7, 1945 at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) at Reims in northeastern France. Present were representatives of the four Allied Powers—France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States—and the three Germany officers delegated by German President Karl Doenitz—Gen. Alfred Jodl, who had alone been authorized to sign the surrender document; Maj. Wilhelm Oxenius, an aide to Jodl; and Adm. Hans-Georg von Friedeburg, one of the German chief negotiators. Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, SHAEF chief of staff, led the Allied delegation as the representative of General Eisenhower, who had refused to meet with the Germans until the surrender had been accomplished

No, the Left only tolerates marxists, socialists, communists, feminists, muslims, africans, or any enemy of western, Christian civilization.

It just occurred to me that I would be more upset if Columbia had said they wouldn’t let Hitler come to campus.

I think if they said they wouldn’t invite Hitler then in some sense they would be saying that Ahmadinejabjab isn’t that bad, but Hitler is. At least this way I can hold onto the hope that somewhere in their heart of hearts these libs know that Ahmadinejad is actually dangerous.

Oh, what I wouldn’t give to sneak into the venue (Colombia or the UN)and raise the podium maybe 6 inches. Imagine his chagrin when he can’t even see over the lecturn. Maybe swap his chair on the stage with a high chair. If he has to come it should be an opportunity for ridicule as much as protest.

The Muslim said to the Indian, “How come there are so many more Muslims now than hundreds of years ago, and yet there are so many fewer Indians than hundreds of years ago?”

The Indian said, “Well”.

The Cowboy tilted up his hat, adjusted his tooth pick and said, “That’s cause we ain’t played Cowboys and Muslims yet.”

Might have already been said, but Hitler would NOT have been invited to Columbia University, since EISENHOWER himself was President of it in 1948.
IMHO. Hitler was dead by then, but still, would Eisenhower have been President of that school if they HAD invited Hitler?

So, that means that anyone who is an anti-semite will be welcome on campus, no matter how right wing they are? I think you misunderstand what makes the Left tick. If a Nazi group were to show up, you think they would be welcomed by these leftists? They love the islamists because the islamists are seen as the enemies of the Christian West, not because they are anti-semites. The Left loves anybody that is anti-establishment, anti-Western, anti-capitalist, anti-white, anti-Christian. Simply being anti-semite doesn’t cut it. You have to be anti those other things, too. If you are not, you are their sworn enemy.

Columbia University Dean John Coatsworth should be held up as the prime example of everything that is wrong with the educational system in this country today, and that includes giving a forum and a speaking platform to a man is supplying weapons that are being used to kill our members of the military in Iraq and who would love to see Israel turned into a smokey hole in the ground. There was a time that Columbia University stood for something, but under the “learned” leadership of Dean Coatsworth, it now seems the school will fall for anything. I would love to see every single student walk off the campus in protest over what is going to happen over there next week, but I suspect that thanks to Coatsworth and his teaching (brainwashing) staff, the majority of students there were long ago “indoctrinated” into the correct way of thinking at Columbia. This is a travesty with a capital T!

I love this. One of the best kept secrets of the Left has always been their closet admiration for the totally-misnamed “Right” totalitarians, since these are of course merely socialists of a different color. The Left adores total power and the Hitlers of the world fulfill that requirement for them. I’ve been waiting and waiting for the first signs of the Left being willing to admit it’s links with National Socialism (= socialist, rabidly anti-American, rabidly anti-”israel”) and at some point the commonalities must emerge into the open. Islamofascism (the Left’s little enablers) and Nazism have many obvious common traits, but we’re perhaps still some time away from the first Leftist leader (will it be Jesse Jackson? Kucinich?) coming out of the closet and stating publicly that “Yes, Hitler was right abot the Unted States, and yes, Hitler would have felt the same about the Jewish homeland, and yes, Hitler meant well by socializing Germany”. The Left’s lightbulb in their heads about who they really are will at some point have to be turned on.
