Video: Bush rips the Democrats over MoveOn’s “disgusting” Petraeus ad

Chris Cillizza at WaPo calls it a “huge boon” for MoveOn. Sure, just like it’s a huge boon for Republicans trying to motivate a dispirited base. Everyone wins when the hard left attacks. Rudy’s begging them to hit him again, in fact; it’s the easiest way to prove his conservative bona fides to primary voters.
NBC says Cornyn’s senate resolution condemning MoveOn — by name — will get a vote today. I’m not sure if that’s good politics or bad politics. It ostensibly forces Democrats to choose between MoveOn and Petraeus but that lets Hillary and the others who haven’t spoken up about it quietly get their opposition to it on record so that they can point back to it later when they’re criticized for not having condemned it. Bush is simply wrong, too, when he suggests that the Democrats are acting mainly out of fear of MoveOn’s fundraising power. That’s part of it but don’t forget the all-important quote from that mystery senator in Politico. They’re playing good cop/bad cop here, which is infinitely more disgusting and less excusable than cowardice.

This is when the President can act like a leader. He’s not running again, his numbers are in the sinker so let ‘er rip. The idea that most Americans are not behind the war on terror is false.

someone else giving moveon the attention it so desperately desires.
every time you mention moveon.org you bring their domain name out there, which just makes them more memorable and more important. better to ignore them.
lorien1973 on September 20, 2007 at 12:54 PM
Shows how stupid MoveOn is.
amerpundit on September 20, 2007 at 12:55 PM
Couldn’t agree more.
He is an salty politician in his own right. I think he knows, but I don’t think he wants to go further than that.
Spirit of 1776 on September 20, 2007 at 12:57 PM
Nice gesture, George. Now why don’t you take that kind of attitude with that Iranian pile of slime?
MadisonConservative on September 20, 2007 at 12:59 PM
Second Madison, you’re the F’ing President of The United States. If Ahmadenijad sets foot at Ground Zero it will be your responsibility.

“He’s not running again, his numbers are in the sinker so let ‘er rip.”
I like. Grip it and rip it. This is what we need from him, and the fact that he rarely does this kind of stuff is my biggest problem with him.
This is one of the best things I’ve ever heard come out of his mouth.
LtE126 on September 20, 2007 at 1:08 PM
Thank you, Mr. President!
CP on September 20, 2007 at 1:13 PM
Absolutely incorrect. Moveon.org attracts mostly the hardcore moonbats, and they represent a small minority even if it doesn’t seem so here on the Internet. Your average blue collar democrat wants nothing to do with these bastards; plenty of them either served in the military or are close to someone who is.
The Dems will have two choices- condemn the tactics of moveon.org and piss off their leftist base, or fail to do so and alienate independents and moderate Democrat voters. Either way, we win.

I love how the article says that Bush lashed out at MoveOn when as though it happened in a vacuum when in reality, he responded (quite well I might add) when ASKED A QUESTION at a press conference. The tone of the article is that Bush resurrected a dead issue because he’s just so very stupid. Annoying…
acleaver on September 20, 2007 at 1:17 PM
Part of the problem with DC these days is the “good or bad politics” question is the only one that matters. The simple fact of the matter is that MoveOn SHOULD be condemned by name because that is the right thing to do- politics be damned!
highhopes on September 20, 2007 at 1:18 PM
Really? I disagree. Congress’s approval is almost in negative numbers and Bush is not quite a lame duck just yet. When asked his opinion about the add, what did you expect him to say? Oh, that’s harsh? Wish they could worded it different? MoveOn has two fingers up the lefts nose and they’re dragging them around. Since when has any politician, right or left, been not motivative by the fear of money?

In a related note in the Democrats “owning defeat”, as Rush says, the Senate voted recently on cloture to reinstate habeas corpus to detainees. It failed but it is almost down party lines.
Betray us indeed.

By the way, the bill was introduced originally by that right wing extremist Arlen Specter.
Weebork on September 20, 2007 at 1:29 PM
MoveOn is cutting new clips right now. The President should not have said “MoveOn.org” in any of his statements.
MoveOn will now likely raise around one million dollars from this one statement from the President alone.
gabriel sutherland on September 20, 2007 at 1:29 PM
The right thing would be to call out these traitors and deal with them.
jdawg on September 20, 2007 at 1:33 PM
MoveOn has responded, and their response seems…familiar:
It’s “worked” for them so far.
Slublog on September 20, 2007 at 1:43 PM
It passed: 72-25
IrishEi on September 20, 2007 at 1:44 PM
Hillary voted AGAINST Cornyn’s resolution! Moron.
IrishEi on September 20, 2007 at 1:45 PM
When it comes to liberals, the best thing for conservatives to do is let them talk, then spread what they said. Why chase after them with a noose when they often provide their own rope?
BKennedy on September 20, 2007 at 1:46 PM
The very best part of this was when Cornyn presented the amendment on the Senate floor. He was brilliant! Not only did he stage it during the Transportation Bill the evening of the Petraeus’ testimony to the Senate Committees on 9/11 but he had boo coo graphics. Then he spent several minutes during his speech outlining the daily morning meetings that the reps of the Democratic Party leadership spend in ’strategy sessions’ with reps of the various moonbattery PACs including MoveOn making it a point that never had he ever heard of the such a thing in all his time in the Senate and questioning if the decision making of the Democratic Leadership in the House and Senate was being directed by Soros! Cornyn tore the Ds and new one! Then it was McConnell’s turn!
Did my heart good to watch it!!
Did Bush say anything about MoveOn’s fundraising being the reason the Ds are afraid of them? I didn’t hear that. But Bush is correct that Ds are too afraid to disown MoveOn which is really ironic since this is the alligator they’ve been feeding that can now devour them!

The war is on.
Entelechy on September 20, 2007 at 1:52 PM
Here’s the roll call.
DKos and DU are livid. LOL
Guess Hillary didn’t get the memo.
IrishEi on September 20, 2007 at 1:52 PM
Allah’s all over this on a new post…
IrishEi on September 20, 2007 at 1:55 PM
Obama and Biden, not voting. Heh.
Entelechy on September 20, 2007 at 1:55 PM
Look who missed the vote.
gabriel sutherland on September 20, 2007 at 1:57 PM
We need to confront MoveOn as directly, relentlessly and dramatically as possible, mainly to educate swing voters as to what the Democrat Party has become. MoveOn is a perfect example, and their smear ads are a perfect platform, of the ugliness that is the new left.
petefrt on September 20, 2007 at 2:02 PM
Just more rope with which to hang themselves.
Hollowpoint on September 20, 2007 at 2:06 PM
Time to sic the IRS and FBI on moveon.
I have zero doubt that they have dirty money, have given dirty money to Democrats, and are in violation of a whole bunch of tax laws.
Hopefully, we’ll get to see Eli doing the “perp walk” as they drag his leftist ass to jail.
Most hopefully, he’ll resist arrest.
georgej on September 20, 2007 at 2:07 PM
Democrats won in 2006 not because of MoveOn, but because of swing vote Catholics and the fiscal conservatives that typically vote for Republicans but stayed home on election day.
There’s little need to target MoveOn directly. You have to go to the source of their funding. We saw with the 527s that they all have a sunset policy. The groups change. The funds remains the same.
gabriel sutherland on September 20, 2007 at 2:58 PM
It’s good to see that G-Dub has still got a little fight left in him.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 20, 2007 at 3:23 PM
President Bush needs to find his inner President Bush, the one who led us fearlessly after 9/11. He needs to just stop the half-baked “sorry deal” kind of talk and speak plainly and truthfully about who the Democrats are and what they are doing: giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The same congressional “patriots” on the Left who didn’t disparage the MoveOn ad also went to Syria recently to confer with terrorist leaders. This is war, and pretending the Democrats are on our side is perhaps the most dangerous thing we can do. I fail to see how W continuing playing Mr. Nice Guy with MoveOn’s puppets helps advance the war. A few semi-harsh words now and then is too little too late. The Dems are on their way to the White House, the Islamists are cheering them on, and no one in the administration seems to want to hurt their traitorous little feelings, or at least not too badly.
