Outrage: Ahmadinejad to visit Ground Zero? Update: Despite NYPD rejection, visit may still be on
posted at 3:21 pm on September 19, 2007 by Allahpundit
If it happens, if this Holocaust-denying terrorist filthbag is allowed to use the remains of the Trade Center for a photo op, the rage on the right will burn so white hot that even the anti-amnesty activism this summer will pale by comparison. It’s not clear from the Sun’s article whose responsibility it is for approving the visit, although the NYPD and Secret Service would both be involved in the security detail. As I recall, the last time he visited New York his visa only allowed him to travel within a radius of a few blocks between the UN and his hotel. And of course the U.S. could deny him a visa to enter the country at all if it so chose. So in some sense, at least, it’s up to State to okay this.
The Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has requested to visit ground zero during his visit to New York next week, police commissioner Raymond Kelly said today.
The Iranian mission to the U.N. made the request to the New York City police department and the Secret Service, who will jointly oversee security during the president’s two-day visit. Mr. Ahmadinejad is scheduled to arrive September 24 to speak to the U.N. General Assembly as the Security Council decides whether to increase sanctions against Iran for its uranium enrichment program.
Mr. Kelly said the NYPD and Secret Service were in discussions with the Iranian mission about the logistics for the possible visit, and whether it will take place at all. He said Mr. Ahmadinejad would not be allowed to descend into the pit for safety reasons related to ongoing construction there.
Not to go all nutrootsy here, but there are one or two influential people who allegedly read this site so let me issue a formal warning to them on behalf of myself and, I suspect, most of our readers: if Bush and Rice let him go down there, especially in the wake of Petraeus and Crocker reporting the threat Iran poses to American soldiers in Iraq, you have no idea how grave the political fallout will be. Consider this an alert from the grassroots early warning system. You ignored the warning we gave you this summer about the amnesty bill. For your sake, don’t ignore this one.
Update: Here’s Bloomberg’s contact information:
PHONE 311 (or 212-NEW-YORK outside NYC)
http://www.nyc.gov/html/mail/html/mayor.html
And here’s State’s:
202-647-4000
TTY:1-800-877-8339
Update: Mitt is the first to pounce.
“Ahmadinejad’s shockingly audacious request should be met with a vehement no. It’s inconceivable that any consideration would be given to the idea of entertaining the leader of a state sponsor of terror at Ground Zero. This would deeply offend the sensibilities of Americans from all corners of our nation. Instead of entertaining Ahmadinejad, we should be indicting him.”
Update: Says the Times, “It was unclear whether the police, the Secret Service or another agency would have final authority on the request. Mr. Kelly said the issue raised by the Iranian Mission had more to do with the logistics of dealing with a large security detail that would be expected to accompany Mr. Ahmadinejad than with his right, like any foreign visitor, to travel freely in the city.” Except that he’s not just “any foreign visitor,” is he? If they can’t restrict his movement then the solution is simple: cancel his visa. Case closed.
Update: Looks like police commissioner Ray Kelly had himself a change of heart. Standby for details.
Update: They’re dancing away from the cliff:
An advance team for the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asked earlier this month that he be allowed to lay a wreath at the World Trade Center site during the opening of the United Nations General Assembly next week, but the request was denied, New York City police officials said today.
The request, which was made at a meeting that included the Secret Service and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was denied for reasons of security and safety, police officials said, adding that Mr. Ahmadinejad’s aides had asked that he be allowed into the pit, where construction is taking place.
Earlier today, Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly had said that Iranian officials had made a “formal request” that Mr. Ahmadinejad be permitted to visit ground zero and that the department, in coordination with the Secret Service, was discussing the matter with officials of the Iranian Mission to the United Nations…
A short while later, around 4:15 p.m., the Police Department’s spokesman, Paul J. Browne, said that Mr. Kelly had misspoke and that police commanders had already decided that a visit to ground zero by Mr. Ahmadinejad was not feasible.
Update: Way to show leadership, George.
President Bush, moving quickly to respond to news that the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has asked to visit ground zero, had a spokesman issue a statement aimed at Mayor Bloomberg that said – in so many words — deal with it.
“This is a matter for the City of New York resolve,” a spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, Gordon Johndroe, said. He added pointedly: “It seems odd that the president of a country that is a state sponsor of terror would visit ground zero.”
Here’s the inevitable condemnation from Giuliani. If this thing does happen, expect Rudy to milk it even more fervently than he did the “Betray Us” incident. He’ll be down there with an army — almost literally — of protesters.
Update: The university that houses the most notorious Middle Eastern Studies department in the country, which gave Iran’s ambassador to the UN a platform last year to dismiss accusations of Iranian terrorism as Fox News propaganda, which capitulated to fear for Walid Shoebat’s safety by closing his appearance on campus to the public, and which counts among its former presidents Dwight Eisenhower, who famously visited Nazi concentration camps himself so that he could personally bear witness to what happened there, is now set to host the world’s most famous Holocaust denier on Monday. Perfect.
Incidentally, will the public be barred from Ahmadinejad’s speech like they were barred from Shoebat’s? If not, why not?
Update: MM says this travesty may happen yet, as the Secret Service will provide security even if the NYPD doesn’t. Fine. That puts the ball back in the feds’ court, and they’re much more pressurable than NYC is. See how the RNC does next year in fundraising, boys. I’ll run the photo of Ahmadinejad at Ground Zero every time I write about the election. And again, I won’t be the only one.

More and more I see signs that many who live in America do not believe Americans own this nation. They act as if America is owned by the world community, and the American citizens should have no say over who does or does not enter our shores.
Substitute ‘Hitler’ for ‘Ahmadinejad’ in the above quote.
Since when do we the American citizens have to give a pass into our nation to a monster who has already declared that Israel must be erased. The shoe bomber only wanted to kill a few hundred. The 911 bombers only wanted to kill a few thousand. Had we known of their intentions in advance, as we do with Mr. Ahmadinejad, would Mr Kelly state they had the right of any foreign traveler to travel freely in our cities?
I need to see this Bill of Rights for foreigners. These &^%$#’s do not even pay taxes. I understand ‘No taxation without representation’. Where the heck did rights get bestowed upon those who do not pay our taxes, do not elect our representatives, and who serve the interests of foreign potentates?
Does this potentate swami have a right to come and dance upon the melted flesh, bone shards, and dessicated molecules of several thousand cremated Americans. Let me go to the site and I will single handedly fight with him, hand to hand, to keep him from desecrating this grave.
What in God’s name has happened to our so-called leaders? They have lost sight of America and bow down to the Devil himself!

Hehe. America is a decent country. It makes mistakes, like all the others, but it’s the greatest country in history because it corrects its own mistakes.
If Ahmadinejad or some other creep were, inconceivably, be able to do something like this, it would be a turning point in American history, the lowest of lows – which could only precede a reawakening of the moral, conservative majority.

Great! So now everyone in the country can write their own local pols. How do the people of Louisiana and Idaho and Missouri and Pennsylvania feel about Bloomberg allowing the head of a terrorist country to wander where he wants in NYC and go to Ground Zero if he wants, after all the money the country spends securing NYC from terrorists and the US paying for the security.
If Bloomberg allows this, better yet, if Bloomberg doesn’t bar it, then tell your congressmen and senators to cut all funding to NYC for security. Not one red cent. They want to cater to Admidinejad’s whim, let them live with and pay for their security.
Dusty on September 19, 2007 at 11:28 PM
Allah,
You’re really off base here.
This has nothing to do with the Republicans. Bloomberg is so far to the Left he isn’t even a RINO. He only ran as a Republican because there was an opening in the ticket.
Bush really has nothing to do with this. Amadinijead is coming to the U.N. It is up to Bloomberg to stop him from visiting Ground Zero, the same way Guiliani stopped Arafat from running around like NYC was his personal playground.
Bloomberg should also refuse police protection for him to get him to Columbia. The Secret Service alone is not nearly enough security detail. Without the NYC police he can’t travel anywhere except from the airport to the U.N. and back.

Well, I’m glad to see everyone here is of one mind.
Might I present an opposing view? Kinda late in the thread.
Actually, I’m a bit conflicted. Forced to make the decision, I would simply say, “given his previous hostile remarks to western civilization, a visit of this type would not be appropriate”. Then add that his visit is obviously intended to be provocative, and many Americans would not want to see him posturing for the cameras. Of course security would be difficult if not impossible, and simply refuse to permit the event.
Now for the opposing view:
Let him do it. Let him make his speeches, let the world see it. Make an appropriate response, AFTER he says whatever he says.
Those of you ‘hot heads’ who want to take ‘direct action’, I can sympathize, being hot tempered myself, but remember some Archduke Ferdinand? Consult a historical reference of your choice, and if that is really what you want, be careful, you might get it.
But, I am conflicted, either politely reject the visit, or politely let it go on, and rebut his remarks as appropriate.
You see, I’m not impressed by photo ops, or symbolism, or anniversaries, or ceremony, or flag waving, or speechifieing, or marches with brass bands, or public posturing. Although some speechifieing can be pretty inspiring, the cynic in me always wonders what the speaker is trying to get from me.
Those of you who believe the best way to respond to my remarks is an ad hominem attack on me, by all means, indulge yourself. It will tell us more about yourself, then it will discredit my position. If you think I might be a liberal troll, then you haven’t been reading my other comments.
If Ahmadinjad is trying to be provocative, and you find yourself being provoked, then you are giving him what he wants.
I don’t like the idea of Ahmajinedad visiting ground zero, but I like even less the individual who gets all full of himself and starts making threats, over a fracking politician and a fracking photo op.

Flashback.
I quote this in full because it’s important to see how the various parties reacted, including President Clinton and the Times.
In 1995, Giuliani made national headlines by ordering PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat ejected from a Lincoln Center concert held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. While Giuliani called Arafat an uninvited guest, Arafat said he did hold a ticket to the invitation-only concert, which was the largest such gathering of world leaders ever held.[68] “Maybe we should wake people up to the way this terrorist is being romanticized”, Giuliani said, and noted that Arafat’s Palestinianian Liberation Organization had been linked to the murder of American civilians and diplomatic personnel. President Clinton protested the ejection[69] and a senior administration official called it “an embarrassment to everyone associated with diplomacy” and a setback in the Middle East peace process Clinton was trying to help broker, for which Arafat was a necessary component.[70] The New York Times criticized the move, saying that Arafat had met with Jewish leaders earlier that day and held a Nobel Peace Prize: “It is fortunate that New York City does not need a foreign policy, because Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who evicted Yasir Arafat from a city-sponsored concert for United Nations dignitaries on Monday night, clearly lacks the diplomatic touch… The proper role of New York, as the UN’s home city, is to play gracious host to all of the 140 or so world leaders present for the organization’s gala 50th birthday celebrations… In fact, he has needlessly embarrassed the city at a moment when New York’s hospitality should be allowed to shine.”[71]
Giuliani’s two preceding mayors, David Dinkins and Ed Koch, held a joint press conference in which they denounced Giuliani’s actions. Koch said, “Mayor Giuliani has behavioral problems dealing with other people.”[70] Dr. Lawrence Rubin, executive vice chairman of the National Jewish Community Relations Council, said that Giuliani’s actions were solely for political reasons and did not help the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations; he pointed out that Israel regularly met with the Palestinian leader in peace negotiations.[68]

There are two different issues here – coming to the U.N. and going to Ground Zero.
It is not up to President Bush to keep him from going to Ground Zero. That falls under Mayor Bloomberg’s purview, and possibly the Governor of New York who could (like Mitt Romney did as Governor of Massachusetts with the former Iranian Prez) refuse any State patrol escorts, and the like – if they are even being used in this case.
I suppose one could argue that he should not have been given a visa to go to the U.N. in the first place, but remember that historically people like Khrushchev, Chavez, et cetera have all come to the U.N.

Does the federal government grant the visas to the visiting delegates to the U.N. ?
Do these visas limit the length of stay and the extent of travel permitted?
Can the federal government revoke these visas?
If the answer to these questions is yes then I would say it is up to President Bush.

(New York – WABC, September 19, 2007) - Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad requested to visit Ground Zero during an upcoming trip to New York. That request was rejected Wednesday. But a source tells Eyewitness News that the decision may not stop him.
A law enforcement source says the Iranian mission to the United Nations has informed the Secret Service that the Iranian president intends to visit Ground Zero Monday at 10 a.m.
The source says regardless of the NYPD’s rejection of the request for a Ground Zero tour, Iran’s president and his entourage will be accompanied by a Secret Service protective detail, a detail provided to all heads of state when they visit the United States.
If this is what the MM is reporting, then it’s probably a smokescreen, so excpect him to be there a lot earlier or a lot later – to try to avoid "protesters". Well, I think there will probably be a few people waiting for him regardless, to give him a warm, friendly New York welcome, as only native New Yorkers can.
NeoConSnakePlissken on September 20, 2007 at 10:13 AM
You’re actually right, coldshot & BuyDanish, it’s not actually the President’s job to limit the visits. It’s actually Bloomberg’s job to limit Ahmadinejad’s visit rights to anything.
Something akin to when Arafat came to speak at the UN and Guiliani forbade him from going anywhere else but the UN general area.
I doubt that Bloomberg would ever do that though.

This post is not aimed at you BD, just a rant on my part…
I am just angry the President did not come out and personaly say something about that SOB’s idea rather than delegate the statement to someone else and basicaly say it’s a NY state problem. The President could have scored some much needed symbolic leadership points by standing up and delivering a good line or two about it himself. It would have been a much needed rallying cry, even if it was only for a brief moment.
If some say he is just being “Presidential”, sorry I don’t buy it, no leaders pulled their punches when talking about Hitler or Tojo during WWII.

I will buy Danish but I will not buy the line that Bush cannot speak up about this. Tell me again what Bush said about Abadaba’s threat to erase Israel, soon?
Is Ahmadinejad doing the job other muslims won’t do?
or don’t do?
or can’t do?
I have to go check that RNC stuff about illegals again to get the syntax right

Here you go again ignoring reality and making up your own alternative version.
We are the host country to the U.N. and as such we are obligated to let him visit there. In order for him to get to the U.N. he will need to “step out of his room”. If you want to start WW4 over this by “beating up” the head of State to another Country, include me out.
Romney is correct that he should be indicted for Genocide, and Hening’s suggestion that he should be arrested for the Iranian hostage crisis also has merit.
These are appropriate responses; yours is loony.

What John Bolton says is correct, but I still don’t see what Bush can do to stop him from going to Ground Zero and Bolton offers no suggestions.
The Secret Service is required to protect him, but I very much doubt that there are not going to be enough of them to provide a safe ride to Ground Zero. As a former New Yorker, I have seen what kind of police protection is mobilized in situations like this and it is massive – well beyond a few SS agents.
If I were Bloomberg, I’d order my police force to form a protective ring around Ground Zero to create a barrier to his access and let that be the photo op Ahmadinijead brings back to Iran.

Rockhauler,
It’s more about not giving AhmTheDeanOfJihad the photo-op. If he gets it, it’ll play very well for him back in Iran and elsewhere. Him being denied such access by an “infidel” country will make him look small and ineffectual. That’s how it is viewed over there. Common sense plays no part.

If Bolton is correct, and I presume he is:
Why can’t his drivers be big burly NYPD/Secret Service who will simply refuse to drive him to Ground Zero?
I like the idea of a wall of police, but I think they should just surround AhmTheDeanOfJihad (I like that, Woody) and refuse to let him go anywhere except from airport to hotel to UN.

Here’s how we should deal with this.
The minute he trys to go to Columbia or Ground Zero, he has violated our laws. He should be immediately arrested, handcuffed, and have a bag placed over his face (as he did to our diplomats). Then they can drag his leisure suit butt to JFK for immediate deportation.
georgej on September 20, 2007 at 2:30 PM
So does this guy have Diplo-immunity? Isn’t he the head of state of a hostile power at war with us (of course we’re not at war with them)? Can’t someone perform a citizens arrest on him?
If he’s gonna have his photo-op at least get the Paris/OJ press conference crasher there to break it up.

Do yourself a favor, don’t respond to any of my comments. It embarrasses me that someone so stupid tries to understand what I write. If I was writing to you I would start off with…see mitt run, see mitt run from being a man, see mitt help friends, mitt owes friends. Get it?
I was speaking metaphorically, you know, kind of like the secret papers I have of the secret testimony of Mitt regarding his sons that you want to buy.
However PB’s idea is even better than mine. And I do abscribe to it.
As I posted before, it is like showing Hitler General Mills ovens during WWII. Hitler would admire the efficiency of the ovens, just like Imabiggerjerkthanu would admire the efficiency of his friends handywork.
This Jew hater (which to you would means he hates the American Indians also) doesn’t need to be walking around anywhere on earth…alive.
right2bright on September 20, 2007 at 4:38 PM
A madman whose government is currently supplying the means to kill our troops as you read this has never tried to go to Ground Zero. There’s a first time for everything.
Memo to the dipshits at State…no one is talking about blocking his entry to the UN, just the area around Ground Zero.
Then I will…deport him immediately for violating the terms of his visa.

Truthfully, your comments were more like Doriengrey’s who is just so proud of an email he sent Mayor Bloomberg. And if you don’t want people to respond to you, you may want to stop leaving comments at a public blog.
Drew on September 20, 2007 at 5:01 PM
Jeez, you can’t even keep your own argument straight.
First you go after me for noting something that was reported in the NY SUN and was a point of fact, not opinion, namely that the restrictions under the Immigration and Nationality Act have never been applied to a head of state.
Your response? There’s a first time for everything.
But two sentences later you say this:
Memo to the dipshits at State…no one is talking about blocking his entry to the UN, just the area around Ground Zero.
You see, the problem is that the quote from the NY Sun article is about blocking his entry into the country in the first place. That would mean no UN, no Ground Zero, no Columbia, no nothing.
Then you say, deport him immediately for violating the terms of his visa.
But, if you had read the article you would have seen that he is permitted to travel within a 25 mile radius of Columbus Circle. Going to Ground Zero would not be a “visa violation”.
It would be an outrage, and it is not going to happen.
Everyone can stop rioting against the RNC now too.

Bush can say: “Don’t go there”, a phrase he uses quite often
He has to say it do Ahmadinejad, not Bolton, of course
The visa was issued by the US government, not the UN. Visas can be changed or rescinded at any time by the US, not the UN.
Man I like Bolton more and more. He would be my candidate for president. It is not that he has the biggest balls in politics, it may be he possesses the only set of intact originals
I believe Bolton offered a suggestion in his Turtle Bay comment. He spoke more in the parlance of citizen then RNC so perhaps that threw you off
entagor on September 21, 2007 at 1:37 AM
A suggestion way back at the top has it right: let the citizens pack all avenues and peaceably resist any attempt by the authorities to disperse the crowd. Allow no vehicular movement, for the duration of his visit, anywhere near Ground Zero. Stand as One.

Bolton was one of Bush’s most brilliant appointments and it’s a travesty that the Dems would not permit his appointment to stand.
I quoted the NY Sun article to show the facts of the case as they stand now. I do not set the rules.
A lot of people like Bolton and Newt are saying that we should further restrict his travel beyond the usual 25 mile radius rule. I do not know what the law is in that respect as far as visa restrictions, but we can are are using other methods to restrict his travel.
We denied him the right to police protection at Ground Zero for security reasons – the same should apply to his other requests, and these decisions are the responsibility of Mayor Bloomberg and those who serve under him.
My point to Drew was merely that he is incorrect to say that it is a visa violation to go to Ground Zero, and that he contradicted himself in his comments since he first said we shouldn’t have issued a visa at all, and then said something entirely different.
Ahmadinijead’s visit has sparked a furor, and we have responded with appropriate outrage over his request to visit Ground Zero, and the shocking invitation from Columbia University.
Now there is a news scandal – The New York Times Editorial board is going to take him to lunch!
We benefit from this controversy as these are issues we can use to separate ourselves from liberal democrats and I believe that the American people are going to side with us, not them. I can’t wait to hear what Hillary has to say about the invitation to go to lunch with the Times.
This will end up being much better for us than if we had broken with all precedent and denied him access to the U.N. in the first place.

President George W. Bush is single-handedly destroying the Republican Party, and we feed right into his hand.
We are absolutely guaranteed a President Hillary Clinton in 2008. Get used to it. And we’ll be hosting Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Kim Jong Il, Bashar al-Assad, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at Ground Zero as they give a champagne toast to the erecting of a plaque dedicated to bringing “attention to the battles for freedom through the ages” and where the U.S. takes responsibility for all the world’s problems.
Sultry Beauty on September 21, 2007 at 7:30 PM
If Ahmadinejad were dead, he wouldn’t be contemplating a visit. His being left alive was early, continuous warning of the American rulers’ softness or doubtful loyalty.
Kralizec on September 22, 2007 at 4:35 PM
A simple peaceful assembly of law abiding citizens bringing along their guns could cause this visit to cease in a New York minute … though it is an assembly of peaceful law abiding citizens, his safety could not be guaranteed. Dictators, oligarchies, and monarchies don’t like the comman man armed …
heh. ANyway … I get to travel there next week and I will be working right next to ground zero. Being a law abiding citizen, I wouldn’t be able to stand with ya’ll with a firearm in the socialist state of New York, but … if he bends over to place a wreath, or some other POS memorabilia … I will gladly kick him into the hole for ya’ll …
