Except, of course, for me getting an iPhone. Thanks to the Influence Peddler for the tip.
Any other Twilight Zone fans think of this instantly after watching the clip?

Hey AP,
You can listen to this radio station and win an iPhone but you would have to listen to Christian music:)

Was this bat inspected for modifications, or is this guy so mediocre that no one cares to play “Gotcha!” with him?
Neo on September 18, 2007 at 6:54 PM
OK. I dont get it???
doriangrey on September 18, 2007 at 6:58 PM
Opp’s finally got it…Had to happed sooner or later…
doriangrey on September 18, 2007 at 6:59 PM
Watch the bat, doriangrey.
Shay on September 18, 2007 at 7:00 PM
It would be more likely to happen if the end of the bat were weighted.
Just sayin….
bbz123 on September 18, 2007 at 7:01 PM
I just saw that specific Twilight Zone episode for the first time about a month ago but c’mon.. we know Endora was behind the whole thing.
GoodBoy on September 18, 2007 at 7:04 PM
Yep, the coin on edge episode.
Unfortunately, one of the worst episodes in the series.
How about a Cookbook instead???
Always Right on September 18, 2007 at 7:05 PM
I’m 50/50 on whether this might be fake. Seems really odd how it stops.
RightWinged on September 18, 2007 at 7:07 PM
What are the odds of that happening again?
Zorro on September 18, 2007 at 7:08 PM
I’d rather see the “Pig People” episode.
GoodBoy on September 18, 2007 at 7:10 PM
And the 9/17 truth movement begins. :D
lorien1973 on September 18, 2007 at 7:11 PM
As far as I know weighting the end of the bat would not have a desirable affect. For awhile corking was semi popular but to my knowledge it has been banned and because it makes the end of the bat lighter instead of heavier the bat wouldn’t stand on end like that.
I’m guess its just a one in a million fluke.
doriangrey on September 18, 2007 at 7:16 PM
The price is too high.
JayHaw Phrenzie on September 18, 2007 at 7:18 PM
fake
Limerick on September 18, 2007 at 7:20 PM
I woulda liked to have seen the batters’ face when the team pointed out the bat to him from the field.
Coronagold on September 18, 2007 at 7:20 PM
Han shot first !
William Amos on September 18, 2007 at 7:21 PM
Lead plug in that bat?
infidel4life on September 18, 2007 at 7:22 PM
The announcers sure make it sound legit. Wasn’t there a game during that series where it rained nearly the whole game and they kept pouring that drying agent all over the dirt areas?
RW_theoriginal on September 18, 2007 at 7:26 PM
I want to see the clip of someone recovering the bat…then I’ll believe.
Limerick on September 18, 2007 at 7:28 PM
Not for nuttin’, but that’s the first time I’ve seen you say you were 50/50 on any issue….haha
Anyway, I watched the game live (the Mets fan that I am) and can say I may have missed it. None of my Mets blogs I frequent mention it, so maybe it is a fake, but I don’t know. Usually there would be something on those blogs, but it’s not there.
Some of the bats have hollowed-out tops (although a hollow bat itself is a no-no). The Bat wasn’t thrown hard, and as strange as it seems, it is possible.
hmmm, this one needs some checking out….
JetBoy on September 18, 2007 at 7:39 PM
The clip is faked. I can tell. It jerks at the moment it stands up. The announcers in real life were commenting on something else.
jihadwatcher on September 18, 2007 at 7:43 PM
The other reason I know it’s fake? It’s a physical impossibility. A bat can not stand up.
jihadwatcher on September 18, 2007 at 7:44 PM
It was trick photography, played in reverse. What actually happened was: Kate Moss was wearing all brown, walked up to home plate and stood there, using her feiminine wiles to talk the runner on 1st to run backwards toward the plate and take her in his arms.
So obvious!
stonemeister on September 18, 2007 at 7:46 PM
Well, I’m 50/50 when necessary… I’ve always been 50/50 on whether UBL is still alive.
Exactly what I was thinking/saying.
Look for Loose Bats 1st Edition, coming to a YouTube near you… and if we get some real money backing us, Pete Rose will narrate when it’s released on the big screen.
RightWinged on September 18, 2007 at 7:47 PM
Everybody knows bats hang upside down…
serenity on September 18, 2007 at 7:49 PM
Yeah, RightWinged, et al…
Nothing on Amazin Avenue (dot) com…My favorite little Mets site, so yes…probably a fake. And none of the few Mets fans I know (they’re all Yankees fans blech) heard about it.
So yeah…probably faked. But if someone were to fake something, why not do something even more amazing…like show the Mets winning the World Series again and again…
But alas, me asks too much even for magic….
JetBoy on September 18, 2007 at 7:58 PM
What are you talking about? A lady just informed me when I clicked on another post I’d just won a free one. I’ve won, like, fifty.
SouthernDem on September 18, 2007 at 7:58 PM
I saw this live on TV when it happened. It’s real, dude, it’s real.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on September 18, 2007 at 7:58 PM
Hmm, I just don’t know. I like to look at little details, like for instance watch the bat as it stands there, it seems to be teetering back and forth just a little, and look at the shadow it’s casting…
doriangrey on September 18, 2007 at 8:04 PM
Looks like the groundwork for this conspiracy was laid early.
RW_theoriginal on September 18, 2007 at 8:05 PM
Reminded me of…… how about the pitch that killed the bird…Randy Johnson I think.
shooter on September 18, 2007 at 8:06 PM
That’s right up there with the pigeon that flew into the path of a pitch (from Randy Johnson, I think) a couple years back. The poor winged rat just about exploded.
flipflop on September 18, 2007 at 8:08 PM
*ack* Shooter beat me to it.
flipflop on September 18, 2007 at 8:08 PM
We have a winner.
F15Mech on September 18, 2007 at 8:08 PM
I was leaning fake thinking it was a photo patch overlay of some type but “I gotta believe” it happened especially in a game with the Amazing Mets.
Oh yeah, and because there is another vid on you-tube of the event via taped/tivo’d replay of the broadcast on someone’s television screen.
Thanks for posting it.
Dusty on September 18, 2007 at 8:10 PM
There are two more You Tube videos of the magic bat here that don’t seem to be copies of the one posted here.
RW_theoriginal on September 18, 2007 at 8:11 PM
Wait a minute. Don’t you believe me when I say I saw it happen live? It’s weird, but it did happen. Seems to me a credible witness ought to end the inquiry.
Attila (Pillage Idiot) on September 18, 2007 at 8:14 PM
Slogan for the 9/17 truth movement
Braves lie dropped bats fly
:D
F15Mech on September 18, 2007 at 8:20 PM
Attila,
The link I posted at 8:05 is a post from a guy saying he saw it happen too and it’s posted at 10:08 on the 12th so I think that backs your eyewitness account pretty well.
Rightwinged,
Our finding evidence that it’s real is no reason for you to abandon the production of Loose Bats. As we all know truth means nothing to true truthers.

wccawa on September 18, 2007 at 8:35 PM
No way this is real; I don’t care how much evidence there is.
frankj on September 18, 2007 at 8:38 PM
Wasn’t there a Twilight Zone about a magic baseball, that always went around the bat when swung at? Or was that a movie?
B26354 on September 18, 2007 at 8:39 PM
You should automatically win the game for doing that.
frankj on September 18, 2007 at 8:44 PM
First time, in the history of the planet, that dirt made wood stand up straight.
Google it!
First time, in the history of the planet, that 2 baseball players on the screen at the same time, neither scratching their nuts. Coincidence? I think not.
Google it!

For what it’s worth, that is indeed the most interesting thing ever to have happened during a baseball game.
Blacklake on September 18, 2007 at 10:33 PM
Is the bat for sale on ebay yet?
TexasDan on September 18, 2007 at 10:36 PM
Lets see if Mythbusters can do it.

jihadwatcher on September 18, 2007 at 7:44 PM
Nonsense. ANYTHING can be balanced if done carefully, but a baseball bat is almost perfectly symmetrical along the axis of its length, which makes it easier.
And best Twighlight Zone episode: “To Serve Man“
DaveS on September 18, 2007 at 11:02 PM
Hmmm… that’s kind of convincing actually… someone was recording their TV with a camera. Still can’t fully buy it though. The way the bat stops just doesn’t make any sense.
RightWinged on September 18, 2007 at 11:03 PM
No, no, no.
The “big” incident came in 1983, courtesy of Dave Winfield.
The irony is ….

The Evil Wizardry of Karl Rove at it again!
Metro on September 19, 2007 at 12:12 AM
He either gets three wishes… or he was using a loaded bat and gets canned.
Come to think of it, I wonder if they did check the bat. I would if I was the Blue.
SilverStar830 on September 19, 2007 at 2:04 AM
The way it landed does look strange. But, strange things do happen. When I was in the Army I flicked a cigarette to the ground (yeah, I know I should have field stripped it, but I was busy), and it bounced up and flipped a few times and then landed standing straight up on top of a rock protrudisng from the dirt.
Helloyawl on September 19, 2007 at 2:07 AM
Nonsense. Try balancing anything non-symmetrical with a high center of gravity. Then try balancing something symmetrical that does not have a flat bottom. You will spend an eternity. If that bat had a convex bottom, it is impossible to stand it up, and that doesn’t address the issue of instantly stopping all that inertia at the theoretical balancing point.
The only way to explain this would be if the bat had a flat bottom, and the bat was weighted at the end. Still a million to one but at least possible. Put 5 cubic inches of depleted uranium at the tip of that bat, and this becomes ever more plausible.
jihadwatcher on September 19, 2007 at 7:20 AM
Check for corking.
MSGTAS on September 19, 2007 at 10:26 AM
If you look at the youtube comments there are a bunch of people who saw this happen live and searched for the video of it online. That makes me think this was real. Its not great evidence but thats enough for me.
Zetterson on September 19, 2007 at 11:07 AM
contra others above: it makes no sense to add weight to a bat. It would only slow down the bat speed. We all remember that the energy imparted to the ball is a linear function of the mass of the bat (and batter) but a square function of the bat speed. So increasing bat speed is hugely more effective than adding weight.
We got too many truthers out there. It’s like everything’s considered fake until proven otherwise by teams of experts from all known fields of study. Actually this post is a fake and everything your physics teacher said about the physics of rotating bodies is part of an elaborate scheme to get Bushitler elected.
jdpaz on September 19, 2007 at 11:13 AM
Corking takes weight out of the tip of the bat and thus allows the bat to be swung more quickly by the hitter while still having a long bat. A corked bat would be less likely to balance like the one in the video.
I’ve seen all sorts of “impossible” things happen. This is actually not that amazing, though it is unlikely that we’ll see it happen again soon. Sort of like a hole-in-one in golf. Note likely to happen, but does happen more than you’d think.
Remember that there is dirt involved here. Anyone seen someone balance an egg on its end by pouring a tiny bit of salt on the table to help stabilize it? Same type of thing here I’m guessing. Maybe even a little divot in the dirt from someone’s cleat.
Snidely Whiplash on September 19, 2007 at 12:58 PM
Dusty, thank you.
Corking a bat has nothing to do with speed of the swing. It makes the bat more “lively,” that is the ball bounces off of it with more speed.
B26354 on September 19, 2007 at 8:43 PM
Have you ever seen a corked bat? The cork is only out in the last few inches of the barrel, not in the contact zone. How does the cork in the end of the bat make the ball come off the contact zone with more speed?
Snidely Whiplash on September 20, 2007 at 1:46 PM
Actually, corking a bat makes it less effective, not more. Players do it because they think it will both make their swing faster and the bat livelier.
B26354 on September 20, 2007 at 2:05 PM
So you are retracting your original statement about a corked bat making it more lively? I don’t really care if a corked bat is more or less effective, I was just making a statement about the way a bat is corked. I do believe a corked bat can be swung faster (due to lower moment of inertia) than a non-corked bat, but that’s about all I have to say. This has gotten way off topic.
