Good news: British intel outfit reports evidence of chemical warheads on Syrian missiles; Update: New deputy chair of UN nuke agency? Syria

Here’s something nice and light for you as the day winds down.
Proof of cooperation between Iran and Syria in the development and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction was brought to light Monday in a Jane’s Magazine report that dozens of Iranian engineers and 15 Syrian officers were killed in a July 23 accident in Syria.
According to the report, cited by Channel 10, the joint Syrian-Iranian team was attempting to mount a chemical warhead on a scud missile when the explosion occurred, spreading lethal chemical agents, including sarin nerve gas and VX gas.
The factory was created specifically for the purposes of altering ballistic missiles to carry chemical payloads, the magazine report claimed.
I’m surprised … that Syrian missiles haven’t already been outfitted with chemical warheads. They’re Baathists, for god’s sake. Chemical warfare is what they do.
Might this have had anything to do with Israel’s mystery raid on Syria two weeks ago? Bret Stephens has a worthy analysis in today’s Opinion Journal of the unprecedented secrecy with which details of the operation are being guarded. The target must have been very, very precious, he concludes, which points towards some sort of nuclear material. Your exit question, per the dot-connectin’ Hashmonean: Assuming it was nuclear and was, per reports, delivered from North Korea in the guise of a cement shipment, why should we believe it was intended for Syria as opposed to Syria’s latest investor in, ahem, “cement factories”?
Update: In fairness, Mohammed ElBaradei is already wholly owned by Iran so this won’t matter much. It’s just the symbolism that’s rancid.

An accident? Either this is the cover story for Israel’s bombing (if it happened at all), or this happened afterward.
If it happened afterward one must ask what could cause such an accident? Were they in a rush? Preparing a retaliation?!
Retaliation – with the means, and the will.
Had they managed to arm the weapons (without Israeli action), liberals would claim they have the right. “See how nice they play they haven’t used them.”
Had they armed them, then used them (without this “accident”), liberals would have justified their retaliation. “Well if you hadn’t bombed them, you wouldn’t have been attacked.”
What remains is the question why Iran didn’t just arm their own missiles. Perhaps they are doing so now. Have they decided to give up on nukes? That Mahdi must be way past due.
Agrippa2k on September 18, 2007 at 10:15 PM
Is Iran preparing to strike back in case Bush actually does bomb them? They know, especially since the London Times keeps telling them, that the US military plans to hit lots and lots of Iranian military sites, not just the nuke stuff. Therefore they have to assume that they would lose any retaliatory capacity in Iran (or see it severely degraded by our strikes). So the logical countermeasure would be to expand their retaliatory capacity outside the country, ie Syria.
From rural Syrian the Iranian “advisers” could hit either US troops in Iraq or even, who knows, US bases in extreme eastern Europe or central Asia. Or of course, Israel. The chemical warheads are the media-bait, the Iranians guarantee that their counter-attack would get maximum coverage and hence generate maximum terror, even if they don’t actually kill any more people than conventional explosives. Images of Israelis fleeing into bomb shelters in gas masks gives Ahmadenijhad a secret woody. He can’t wait.
But don’t worry guys. El Baradai says that Iran isn’t up to anything. All is well.

Gosh, I wonder where Syria got those chemicals agents from.

Anyone who thinks these people are not a threat to Western Civilization is just plain insane.
bbz123 on September 18, 2007 at 10:31 PM
Is Bush including chemical warheads on medium range missiles in his calculations about whether and when to bomb Iranian nuke sites? This seems like a very high-stakes gamble.
Iran, Syria, Hezbullah, Hamas, chemical weapons, add Iranian missiles with proven range and accuracy, then toss in a little NORK nuclear material and that’s quite a recipe. Even if they don’t have a working atomic weapon, a dirty warhead atop an Iranian missile could be the next best thing. Is this something Bush is really willing to risk in his last days in office? Then again, is he really willing to let his predecessor deal with it? Gulp. Interesting times…

If Syria launches one, they will have signed their own death warrant.

I hope the CIA is right for once and we really do know where they are.

Not to mention the death warrants of those near where the missile hits.
Do we have to wait until then?

Two weeks after Israel’s alleged bombing raid in Syria, which some foreign reports said targeted North Korean nuclear material, the UN’s nuclear watchdog elected Syria as deputy chairman of its General Conference on Monday.
The UN has become the enemy.

It’s so much easier once you know how to separate the good guys from the bad guys. The Islamofascists are definitely bad guys if you value life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They seek to destroy

You know the CIA is useless.
How do NORK scientist travel to Syria so easily anyway? And an entire shipment of “something” made it, no problem.
How about taking out some of these scientist en route? Something in their drink, snake under their pillows. Sink a ship from time to time. Aren’t they supposed to be dilapidated? When are we going to use our “weather control weapon”. Is it tied up keeping the temperature in the middle east over 140 degrees?
Agrippa2k on September 18, 2007 at 11:08 PM
Yep, the same “cement factories” where they transported Saddam’s WMD’s in the months leading up to the war in Iraq!
The US and our allies need to wake up to the danger lurking from Iran and its satellite country Syria before we pass the point of no return and these nutjobs let loose with WMD’s on Isreal, Europe, and the US!
We need to take them out now or face the consequences, it’s that simple!
Liberty or Death on September 18, 2007 at 11:21 PM
The world knows full well they would have been assisted.
You got to remember that Israel does not eff around. They will know exactly who is responsible if chemical weapons are used.
I am unsure of Israel’s stance on WMDs, but I think using one WMD allows for retaliation in spades. You gas me? I’ll nuke you.

Look at that picture, Syria’s tryin’ to take Iraq’s place in the Axis of Evil.
And yes, Bad Candy, I think you’re right … Saddam’s WMDs. Read “Saddam’s Secrets” by George Sada.

Just give America a reason. We got a President who doesn’t give a damn about poll numbers and would just love to knock off one more rogue regime before his time is up.
SoulGlo on September 18, 2007 at 11:48 PM
The only purpose of a chemical or biological weapon is terror. We will never use gas/nerve agents again, even if used on us (or Israel). Atomic particles, however, would do just dandy as a response.

I was unaware of the Baathist connection in Syria. So I then did a wikipedia search for Syria, and I
was surprised to learn some new information.
Does this sound very familiar to anything going on in the USA???
I was surprised to read that.
This could partly explain Turkey’s willingness to help Israel.

At the moment it looks like they are more a danger to themselves then to the rest of us. Although, with these tools they could, quite by accident, do a lot of damage.
Still, arrogance, and megalomania can take you only just so far, then you need real skills and talent.
This reminds me of a video clip I saw on the history channel about the Russian ballistic missile program circa mid ’50’s. There was a Russian General who, as a display of confidence, and courage, was sitting in a chair at the base of the missile, as technicians were working a technical problem, or fueling the missile, when the fuel ignited.
The clip clearly shows several men outside the fireball running for their lives. The only one who might have survived was the man nearest the camera who was still running out of the picture even though the back of his leather jacket was smokin’.
Now imagine one of these clowns getting on an passenger jet, at some mega-passenger terminal, in the contagious phase of some deadly disease.

If this news article proves to be true Iran and Syria have pretty much just assured that they are going to be on the receiving end of one very serious a$$ kicking.

Hey, I just went to cnn.com and abcnews.com and there’s nothing on their “world” headlines pages about the chemical weapons deaths (although CNN did have a story about the dangers of fast food to immigrant children’s risk of obesity).
Doesn’t that prove this is just another Bush administration and military-industrial complex (Jane’s Defense Weekly) disinformation story trying to gin up war fervor against more countries?

I have no doubt that this is where Saddam’s WMD ended up.
Josef Bodansky was the Director of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare. His book
The Secret History of the Iraq War, describes a series on incidents that leads credence to the theory that Saddam got his WMD into Syria before his Iraq fell.
Global Security seems to confirm this as well:
More from Bodansky:
Not that Syria didn’t have Chemical weapons before they acquired Saddam’s. There was a report out that Syria had chemical weapons for at least a decade before the Iraq invasion.
So the questions become, if this was chemical and not nuclear warheads they were loading, were they Assad’s or Saddam’s? Were the Scuds Syria’s or the ones Saddam smuggled out?

I believe the policy of the US has been, and still is, that if we or our interests are attacked by WMD of any kind, we will retaliate with the only WMD we have deployed: nuclear warheads. Like Fed-Ex, overnight delivery guaranteed.

This is why I hate right-wing blogs. Stop distracting us from the important issues regarding Syria and Assad. Send Diane Sawyer back in and she’ll find out the latest additions to her good ole pal Bashir’s Ipod collection. Get with the program, Allah, start talking about his hot wife or something, and how she is allowed to walk around uncovered. He is so darn LIKEABLE.
RW Wacko on September 19, 2007 at 9:04 AM
I can’t speak specifically to the NORKs, but the pharmaceutical industry is huge in Syria and they can get a lot of chemicals, scientists, and such into the country by using that as a cover.
Why yes it does! A great source for what happened in Lebanon and it’s larger implications of how shifing demographics can destroy a country is Brigitte Gabriel. The interview with her is fascinating and foreboding. (See “Watch video” at left hand column).
This is a super top secret story, so that may explain it. The Israelis are rightly being very tight-lipped about this. Of course that does not explain CNNs role as a leader of the food police.
Buy Danish on September 19, 2007 at 9:06 AM
Help me out here.
I’m sure that Syria was up to something really fishy, or Israel wouldn’t have gone to the time, trouble, and expense to bomb them. Israel and Syria are saying just as much about this incident, though, i.e. nothing. Syria isn’t even saying that Israel bombed a baby food factory, for crying out loud.
Let’s say that Syria is involved in procurement, manufacture, and proliferation of WMDs. That’s no surprise. It’s not surprising that Syria would want to stay as quiet as possible and not even acknowledge that they were hit, although I am surprised they’re not pulling the baby food factory trick for sympathy from fellow rogue Islamic states.
What does Israel gain from keeping quiet, though? Wouldn’t Israel want the USA and Europe to know excatly what the IAF blew up? Or, do they fear that, the moment they speak up, Iran will respond by attacking Israel in retaliation, starting WWIII in a more official way?
flutejpl on September 19, 2007 at 10:08 AM
You need to put the crack pipe down and back slowly away from it. Crack is not your friend. The fact that cnn.com and abcnews.com are not covering it does not mean that it did not happen, all it means is either they don’t know about it yet, or it doesn’t fit their agenda.

There are several factors in play with Israel’s decision not to divulge information on what they bombed. When Israel bombed the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq back in 1981 with the exception of the United States and maybe Britain and Australia pretty much the entire world condemned them. Plus Israel needs to be very careful not to say anything that might indicate how they came to know of the existence of the target and the targets value.
doriangrey on September 19, 2007 at 10:32 AM
Not good. Unless Israel can hit all these chemical tipped missiles quickly on the ground then the possibility of massive Israeli casualties is extreme. I’m sure they could hit most of them quickly but I imagine just one of those things hitting downtown Tel Aviv during rush hour or something would be devastating.
Yakko77 on September 19, 2007 at 11:15 AM
I wanna know where Syria got their chemical warheads from…
I don’t believe they have access to the tools and resources to make them themselves…

Yea, they got hammered pretty hard by just about everyone press. There were a lot of retards claiming Saddam’s nuclear program was only for civilian energy production and how Israel was way over reacting to something that really wasn’t a threat to them.
