I always assumed they only buried IEDs under dirt roads. Nope.

That was freaky…Glad it didn’t have its desired affect…

doriangrey on September 17, 2007 at 11:36 AM

They put these under culverts which run across the road. Obviously underpowered or the road was very well laid.

Egfrow on September 17, 2007 at 11:38 AM

Yeah, that was weird. I can’t picture it would damage the humvee with the blast itself as a lot of it was probably absorbed, but I could see it rolling or throwing one pretty easy.

Bad Candy on September 17, 2007 at 11:39 AM

Look carefully to the far left in video… the ground is disturbed right next to the blast. So apparently they tunneled underneath the road. No patches in the asphalt visible.

Amazing!

Mcguyver on September 17, 2007 at 11:41 AM

People still ripping these videos of liveleak. That thing has been on liveleak for days then someone moves it to another site and it spreads across the web.

That thing was a culvert bomb, way to deep so it made the thing slow. It would of flipped the vehicle but not broken it apart.

Win Win Win on September 17, 2007 at 11:51 AM

Sally Fields, had she been at the wheel, would have driven right into it (with help from James Brolin).

HA!

#1 cause of death to Americans in Iraq.

But with her all-healing Mother Energy, the charge would never have gone off, and flowers would have grown up through the asphalt.

Very freaky.

Am I the only one seeing a problem with the comment section?

amerpundit on September 17, 2007 at 12:11 PM

That would have been one hell of a hit if it had been a dirt road.

amerpundit on September 17, 2007 at 12:11 PM

Looks weird here too.

RushBaby on September 17, 2007 at 12:17 PM

fixed now. That was fast!

RushBaby on September 17, 2007 at 12:17 PM

You’re suffering from Iraqnophobia.

JammieWearingFool on September 17, 2007 at 12:20 PM

Ok, fixed now.

amerpundit on September 17, 2007 at 12:22 PM

To quote the soldier in the video, “Whoa, holy s#!%” indeed! Thank God they missed.

flutejpl on September 17, 2007 at 12:26 PM

Actually, one of the most common methods for planting IEDs under asphault is to use battery acid to liquifiy the surface, scrap or “peel” it off the base and then place the device. Once the surface has been replaced, it will harden back in a few hours. Th only visible sign is a ‘clean’ spot on the road and that is often covered with a handfull of dust.

That one was either an undercharged device or an incompleate explosion.

Tunneling takes too long and culverts are pretty well mapped out.

opusrex on September 17, 2007 at 12:38 PM

Wow. I bet after that the soldiers were shaking a little, not because of fear but because of the “I almost died” adrenaline. For some reason this reminds me of a question I asked my Dad about being in Vietnam. “Dad how did you do it? Go out ever day, plodding through the jungle and knowing you could die at any moment” he said “Son you do what you have to do you can’t be afraid of what may happen, especially not in a war”. But I still marvel at these men and women, day after day waking up possibly wondering is this my last day? God Bless them.

Ravenlike on September 17, 2007 at 12:42 PM

No, you can see that the whole left part of the road heaved up. This bomb was deep under the road. If it was just inches below the surface, it would have popped out and made a fire ball. Instead, it ballooned the whole road from underneath.

jihadwatcher on September 17, 2007 at 12:50 PM

Whatever the reason, it was amazing.

A friend of mine, just home from Iraq, was driving his wife nuts, because he was driving around all the manhole covers on the street. He didn’t even realize he was doing it.

God bless our brave soldiers.

Dr. Gecko on September 17, 2007 at 12:59 PM

This doesn’t look real. Are you sure this isn’t a
special effect looped in to give the appearance of a
actual explosion. . . I don’t know about this one.

Texyank on September 17, 2007 at 1:03 PM

That’s what I was wondering. The whole bubble effect of asphalt; hard to imagine that kind of elasticity.

Jaibones on September 17, 2007 at 2:07 PM

I just spent the weekend on base with some great guys back from Iraq. Outside were aged hippies holding signs complaining against the military with “weed” drawn on them. I guess if you promote your drug use, it makes your point more salient? My wife was screaming at them out the car window.

When you get to compare these guys rolling on Iraq roads next to some of the people they protect, it makes you love ‘em even more. The best Americans are in uniform. God bless everyone of them.

Hening on September 17, 2007 at 2:09 PM

“A friend of mine, just home from Iraq, was driving his wife nuts, because he was driving around all the manhole covers on the street.”

When my son came back from Iraq, the Marines Key Volunteers put on a program for the family members of the unit. Besides the issues of benefits, insurance, and so on, they pointed out that there was a higher than average rate of automobile fatalities in the first several months among Marines returning from Iraq.

They recommended that returning Iraq vets take the time to reacclimate themselves to driving in America.

Easy to say, hard to do with a 21 year old Marine who spent the last 7 months in the desert, with exactly 2 beers issued to celebrate Christmas, little female companionship, and looking for a little “fun” now that he’s back in the World. ;^)

georgej on September 17, 2007 at 3:13 PM

Hope the perps were caught and shot soon after detonation.

(The “WTF” look on their faces would give them away.)

profitsbeard on September 17, 2007 at 3:21 PM

Look carefully to the far left…

Trying not to these days, thanks.

Jaibones on September 17, 2007 at 2:07 PM

Keep in mind how asphalt gets kinda soft in really hot weather…now think about how hot Iraq is. I’m just guessing, I’m sure someone knows better than me, but that’s what I’m thinking.

Bad Candy on September 17, 2007 at 5:30 PM

Yeah, copy that. Still, it has an other-worldly effect on video. I’m skeptical on this one.

Jaibones on September 17, 2007 at 6:21 PM

Wow.

Tanya on September 17, 2007 at 7:24 PM

All those guys now have their “alive” day to celebrate. Hoo-ah.

Mojave Mark on September 17, 2007 at 7:34 PM

Yep, the hollywood liberals are right. That’s just something a normal Iraqi cooked up to defend his country against the Americans who want to steal his oil.

peacenprosperity on September 17, 2007 at 7:54 PM

Totally believable. I’ve worked with DOT for some time and asphalt is the choice material for roads for the exact reason that it gives so much. The standard pavement design for parking lots and secondary roads is 2-4 inches of asphalt over a 6 or 8 inch base of crushed stone. That is exactly what this looks like. The idiot jihadists just dug thier hole too deep. The fact that this was an amature job bodes well for our guys. They are obviously “running out” of experienced bomb makers. Pray for the troops.
